Hinchcliffe breaks eight year old Barnsley Parkrun record SCOTT Hinchcliffe claimed yet another record as he won the Barnsley Parkrun in a time of 15-55. The record has stood for eight years on the undulating three-lap Barnsley course. Many Penistone runners were in action over the weekend with a few racing the National Cross Country championships which were held at Harewood House for the first time in the event’s history.
The event brings together the best cross country athletes across England leading to a high standard. First back for the Senior Men was Daren Nockels who had a strong run to finish the sevenmile course in 46-47. Julia Johnson was first back in the ladies race finishing the five-mile course in 38-36. Brothers Hugh and Ewan Mackie competed well in the junior races.
Elsewhere there was success at the short but challenging Hoppits Hill Race near Mirfield. Penistone claimed both team prizes for the men and women respectively and there were a host of age category winners too. Despite running the national cross countries the day before Hugh Mackie was still able to give the adults a run for their money finishing in fourth overall. Penistone youngsters also performed well in the Hoppits Hill junior races. Results from National Cross Country Championships, Harewood House: Senior Men:

NATHAN KEIGHTLEY was the hat-trick hero as Penistone Church took a fantastic 4-1 win over Goole AFC in front of their home crowd on Saturday. Keightley opened the scoring from the penalty spot five minutes before the break and Andy Ring extended Church’s lead seven minutes after the restart. Keightley added his second and Church’s third on 52 minutes but Carl Stewart pulled one back for Goole on 75 minutes. Keightley topped off a great performance with his third deep into stoppage time to put the icing on the cake. OUGHTIBRIDGE entertained current league champions Stannington Village in the first of a two-week double header. The visitors were in touch and with a game in hand on the top two but they had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Oughtibridge War Memorial. It was a tight and close contest as the scoreline suggests. In the first half the home side had to do the majority of the defending but still had the best chances in the half, first Ross Brown struck a post then Callum Chambers rounded the keeper but managed to shoot at the defender stood on the line. In the second half, despite Oughtibridge getting the better of the game, the deadlock was broken with 20 minutes left when former Penistone Church striker Lewis Dickinson picked up the ball on the edge of the penalty area and crashed home an unstoppable effort to put the visitors in front. Then Oughtibridge’s deserved equaliser came about when a corner wasn’t dealt with by the visiting defence and Chas Tunnard made no mistake. Oughtibridge continued to press and Matt Harrison almost scored with five minutes left but shot over, then man of the match Kurtis Turner looked like he had won it in the last minute but the goal was ruled out for offside. Kurtis was making his War Memorial debut after spending eight weeks injured.
