KNIFE CRIME HORRORS STOCKSBRIDGE MAN ASSUALTED IN ALLEY SUSPECT NAMED
A 29-year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection to an incident last week in which a man suffered a stab wound to his arm. At around 3.10pm on Thursday 18 April, emergency services were called to an alley close to Newton Grange, Stocksbridge where a 37-year-old man had suffered a minor injury to his arm, caused by a knife.
INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED FOLLOWING ROUNDABOUT INCIDENT
DETECTIVES are investigating following a stabbing in Chapeltown in which two men were injured.

Have your say on Hillsborough Park
PLANS to revive Hillsborough Park’s listed former Coach House as a dementia-friendly older people’s centre and cafĂŠ will be on show at two consultation events this month. Age UK Sheffield, which has been awarded ÂŁ50,0000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to develop the proposals, are inviting people to two events in Hillsborough to see the plans and give feedback. Steve Chu, chief executive of Age UK Sheffield, said: “We are very excited about these plans and the huge difference they could make, not only to people with dementia and their families, but to the wider Hillsborough community.
“We are looking at improving local facilities with new toilets, space for community groups and a new cafĂŠ, whilst the possiblility of hosting evenings, clubs and even weddings is also being discussed. A survey can also be filled in online by visiting https:// www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ M3QWV7F. And if people want to fill in a paper version of the feedback form, they can go to Hillsborough Leisure Centre, Hillsborough Library or Fairlawns Medical Centre. In December, Heritage Lottery Fund confirmed an initial ÂŁ50,000 bid to Age UK Sheffield.
It means the abandoned coach house, last used as a munitions store during the Second World War, could be open for use by the whole community by the end of 2020. Age UK Sheffield says the development funding of £49,700 announced today will enable the charity to progress plans and apply for a full National Lottery Grant later this year. A fundraising campaign is already under way. The centre, behind Hillsborough Library and adjoining the Park’s attractive walled garden, could host dementiafriendly group activities such as singing and dancing, as well as classroom-based activities and educational classes such as digital drop-ins.
CITY COUNCIL ELECTIONS - Thursday 2nd May CITY COUNCIL ELECTIONS - Thursday 2nd
BETRAYED NATIONALLY, DON’T BE BETRAYED LOCALLY ELECT
This is a local election about local issues. However, whether you voted Leave or Remain, most people agree that democracy is being dangerously undermined by our MPs. A vote for your local UKIP candidate can achieve two things: -
DAVE BOOKER East Ecclesfield
RE-ELECT
ELECT
JOHN BOOKER GRAEME WADDICAR West Ecclesfield Stocksbridge & Upper Don
Gaining another hard-working councillor standing up for your issues in Sheffield Town Hall alongside our existing councillors Jack Clarkson and John Booker. Sending a message to the establishment parties that you are not happy with their performance.
The report below which appeared in The Star on 6th March 2019 gives you a flavour of the stance UKIP takes in council on local and national issues: UKIP councillors Jack Clarkson and John Booker said their budget attempted to be a “force of good in the community: They would have a night cafe where homeless people could find help and stay warm. A fund would be established for community murals to be painted around the city where graffiti is a problem. They would tackle fly-tipping with extra enforcement officers, CCTV in hot spots and “bring out your rubbish days with community skips. Pop-up gyms would be set up to encourage young people to get fit and healthy, be active members of the community and stay safe from crime.
UKIP is fielding 22 candidates for Sheffield Council – imagine what a difference we could make if instead of 2 we were 22!
In an entertaining speech at full council, Cllr John Booker said: “We have a Conservative Party that doesn’t conserve and we have a Labour Party that doesn’t work. The Lib Dems are neither liberal nor democratic. The Green Party are like watermelons, they’re Green on the outside but Labour red on the inside. And the only thing The Independent Group is independent from is reality. Then there is UKIP – over four million people voted for us nationally.â€? He concluded with an impression of Winston Churchill and said: “Never in the field of modern politics have so many been represented by so few. There has to be a better wayâ€?. STOCKSBRIDGE AUTHOR FOLLOWS UP BEST SELLER MORE inept, more clueless and more exhausted than ever, the man behind the blogging phenomenon Man vs Baby is back with the latest instalment in his - and his son Charlie’s - journey through the chaos and comedy of parenting. In the follow-up to the critically acclaimed Sunday Times bestseller Man vs. Toddler – Matt describes it as, “the story of what happens when your little one is transformed from an innocent bundle of joy into a creature that walks, talks... and craps in a plastic bucket in the middle of your living room.” Man vs Toddler exposes the lie that, that when it comes to parenting ‘it gets easier’. But it is just as honest, foul-mouthed and heart-warming as Matt’s first book, and will have you laughing and crying with recognition as he shares his observations and advice on ev-
erything from tantrums to the horrors of soft-play.
didn’t think it could be that bad – but I was wrong!.
Matt is 44 and originally from Stocksbridge, although he now lives in Barnsley. In September 2015, Matt’s life was turned upside down by the arrival of his son Charlie. After three months of fatherhood, he logged on to Facebook and wrote about his experience of having to live with ‘a furious, sleep-murdering, unstable and incontinent, breasts-obsessed midget lodger’.
“It’s been very different writing this book, I still can’t believe I wrote the first one and I can’t remember anything about writing it now. I was surviving on just a few hours of sleep a night. I think this one was more fun to write – toddlers have more of a personality.
The post became a viral sensation and was shared all over the world. Following this, Matt created his popular blog Man vs, Baby, which now has over 200,000 followers, and subsequently wrote a Sunday Timesbestselling book based on his first year of parental triumphs and disasters entitled Dummy. Matt says: “Everyone told me about the ‘terrible twos’ and I
“I’m not sure if I’ll do another book about Charlie – maybe it would be fun to do one when he’s a teenager. He could write one page and then me the next. But I think I will continue to write about parenting and there is talk of a TV series!” The book, published by Wildfire, is available in hardback, Ebook and Audiobook. Vote Julie Grocutt your Labour Candidate on May 2nd I live locally and work hard for this area on issues that matter to you. As a retired police officer I have the skills and experience to be a strong voice standing up for Stocksbridge and Upper Don. • As a Town Councillor I worked with the police to get Deepcar police station back open again. I will continue to work hard to improve community safety. • Tory school cuts mean that a school in our area is losing out on over £500 per pupil. I know how important local schools are, my family go to schools in our area. I will continue to campaign against Tory school cuts and fight for fair funding. • As a local resident I know how important all our local services are. I will stand up for our area to make sure they’re protected. • As a local who enjoys our beautiful scenery I will campaign to protect our green spaces, like I am doing already at Hollin Busk. • As a member of the local health forum I will continue to work hard to protect our local health services and our NHS from Tory privatisations. • As the chair of the Stocksbridge Transport Users Group I will continue to call for better transport links for our area and press the council for safer roads. The Medal Centre have been asked to return to a number of local venues due to the huge response to the event held at this venue last time that they visited. One local resident was absolutely thrilled to accept a four figure sum for her small tin box containing her late Uncle’s medals for bravery during WW1 along with his campaign medals for service in the Boer War and WW1 and a small selection of gold and silver coins along with a small amount of broken gold jewellery. The lady said that not only was she astounded to discover how much her items were worth but the money could not have come at a better time due to the current financial situation and on top of all that she was delighted to be able to help local ex-servicemen and women.

There has never been a better time to sell your inherited collectable items as, due to The Medal Centre’s vast client base, they are able to offer the best possible prices and The Medal Centre’s proprietor Mr Andrew Jukes was recently quoted as saying, “We are now able to pay exceptionally high prices for all medals from a single item to a complete collection”. Prices for this type of item are at an all time high and people are often surprised how much some of the associated items such as cloth and metal badges or items of uniform, paperwork and photographs can enhance the value of a group of medals.

Even items such as Military Pay-books or old Military Photographs will always be of interest to a genuine collector. Mr Jukes also commented that at the moment good quality English and Scottish banknotes are in very high demand and he is paying very high prices for such items. He also made a point of saying how pleased he is that he now has a new in house expert on philately and stamps and he would now welcome the offer of mint condition British stamps including presentation packs and stamp collections. It is also a good way to help your local community as The Medal Centre will be giving a donation to local ex-service charities for every item they are able to purchase on the day. However if you cannot attend on the day, one of the experts from The Medal Centre will be happy to call and see you at your convenience and they can be contacted on 01434 609 794 or 07950 421 704.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Police dog helps catch suspect in High Green
Being Leader of the Council is a full time job. However long the European Parliament must have British MEPs none of them should be able to hold down other jobs as councillors. How can they truly represent their council area when they will spend most of their time in Brussels? The Lib Dems are A Police dog called Tyrion (pictured) attended treating us with contempt!

fender had left, but that didn't stop a determined Tyrion. Tyrion searched through the streets until he caught up with a male matching the description.

A safe place for the night With the current increase of rough sleeping in Sheffield, your article, ‘A safe place for the night’, was a welcome read. Such initiatives of assessing a homeless person’s needs quickly and drawing up a plan so they can move on with their lives is something the Government would do well to take note of on a national level. The union of Sheffield City Council and the Archer Project gives the homeless hope. Homelessness now is a complicated problem. One which could face anyone due to the pressures of money, family breakdowns etc in 2019.

Not only do we now have the spectre of European elections which no one wants, but that Leader of Sheffield Liberal Democrats Shaffaq Mohammed is standing in these elections.

LOCAL Chris Pollard is one many artists opening up their studio or gallery as part of the Open Up event. The artist will be inviting the public to visit his studio at 2 Station Road, Deepcar, where they can see his portraits in oil. Chris has recently painted a portrait of the man with a pram, John Burkhill, which has been acquired by Museums Sheffield as part of their social history collection based in Weston Park Museum. His studio will be open on May 5, 6, 11 and 12. More information can be found on Chris’ website at www.artiman.co.uk. You can contact Chris on 07974 499 429 or email info@ artiman.co.uk
It’s an opportunity to clear out unwanted presents, de-clutter your cupboards and find yourself a bargain. Donations of good quality items will be very welcome and could include clothes, toiletries, crockery, books, crafts, pictures, cakes and jams.

European Election and political gravy train
IN a new venture, Worrall Community Association are planning a bring and buy sale on Saturday April 27 from 11am until 2pm at the Memorial Hall, Towngate Road, Worrall, and they need the local community to lend a hand.
You can bring them on the day, drop them off at Worrall Post Office or at 286 Haggstones Road. Local groups who meet at the Memorial Hall are supporting the event and appropriately the toddler group are running the toy stall. Refreshments will be available and it’s a great opportunity to meet friends and neighbours. It’s all for a good cause too as the proceeds will be split between the Children’s Hospital and supporting the Worrall Gala in July. Please come along and give it your support.

JOE Pinguey is to be given Freedom of the Town due to his services to Penistone and he has recently celebrated the fact that local shoppers have voted a cause he put forward as one to support. Mr Pinguey is raising funds for an RAF Centenary Bench project with the aid of the Tesco Bags of Help in the Penistone store. The scheme received the most votes out of the three projects between the beginning of January and the end of February. The funds are secure and work will start on the sculpture bench with Steve Tarr of SJ Logging, who only use a chainsaw. The bench, when complete, will be located and dedicated in the grounds of Penistone Grammar School in the area of their own war memorial. Joe has been involved in various military events and anniversaries since 2010, involving Penistone and local communities. He says the Freedom of the Won award came as a great surprise.

Steels enjoy home win Steels with their league safety guaranteed after a recent upturn in form recorded an excellent 3-0 victory over Lincoln United on Saturday in sweltering conditions at the look local stadium.
After being asked to bat, signs were ominous as Oughtibridge lost their first two wickets for just two runs. But a good recovery from newcomers Ashkay Gupta and Ben Ladd Gibbon took the score to 73 before Darfield again made further inroads, taking a further three quick wickets. Oughtibridge could easily have wilted under the Darfield pressure, but instead they dug in and as the innings drew to a close began to flourish. This was largely down to a superb 67 from Hedar Rasool and a wonderful cameo from Connor Snelgrove, who cracked 47 off 40 balls to give Oughtibridge a competitive, though not insurmountable score of 229 from their 50 overs.

In response Oughtibridge managed to maintain pressure on the Darfield batting line up from the very first over. Resistance was provided from Luke Aitken who smacked six fours and four sixes in a brutal 62, the game could easily have gone away from the home team. It took a stunning one handed catch from Hamza Ilyas to finally end Aitken’s assault and Oughtibridge closed out the game, finally bowling Darfield out for 176, with Matt Scholey ending with figures of 6-63.

The Stocksbridge openers got them off to an excellent start, before the dangerous Jack Newton was removed for 27. Matt Price (36) continued to go about his work with the help of Dave Smith (25) as the top order laid the foundations for what would hopefully be a respectable total. Price and Smith both fell at similar times leaving Stocksbridge at 95-4. This brought Liam Grayson and Joe Hibbert to the crease who put together a excellent partnership of 80 to help see Stocksbridge set an above par total. Grayson fell for 34 looking to increase the run rate and the lower order came and went in an attempt to score quick runs. Joe Hibbert top scored however was bowled last ball of the innings for a well made 40 leaving Stocksbridge 189-8 off 40 overs meaning De La Salle required 190 to win. In reply the De La Salle innings never really got going, Joe Hibbert bowled with pace and aggression and picked up two quick wickets, including the dangerous Cull who inflicted pain on the Stocksbridge bowlers last season. At the other end Jake Vickers kept it tight before taking his first wicket thanks to CONTINUED ON PAGE 19
