Stocksbridge Clock Tower and Gardens become Sheffield’s fourth Centenary Field THE historically important Stocksbridge Clock Tower and Gardens, one of more than 800 green open spaces in Sheffield, has been officially dedicated as a Centenary Field protected site.

carried out by F. S. Scott-Smith with Joseph Sheldon, Chairman of the Council. Onlookers included ex-servicemen, members of the Stocksbridge Choral Union, Boy Scouts and school children.

Set in landscaped gardens, with public footpaths running through, the site is a popular destination for walkers, those taking a rest on their way to the town centre, and the children who love to play there. The clock itself still keeps accurate time and the chimes can be heard throughout the area.

After reading the Role of Honour, the last post and reveille were sounded. A service of remembrance takes place each year at Armistice Day, with local residents paying their respects.

The Clock Tower and gardens are one of the most historically important sites in the Stocksbridge and Deepcar area. Overlooking the Stocksbridge Valley, the Clock Tower War Memorial was built to the memory 107 young people, a nurse, sailors and soldiers, who died in the First World War. The laying of the foundation stone took place on 14 July 1923 and was

From sports pitches to children’s playgrounds, bicycle trails to country parks, Fields in Trust protects open spaces across the UK from being developed. Centenary Fields is a national initiative being led by Fields in Trust and the Royal British Legion. The Centenary Fields programme aims to protect at least one green space in every local authority area across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to commemorate the centenary of World War I.

Fields in Trust Chair of Trustees, Tim Phillips, comments: “This programme is a fitting way for us to mark the sacrifices made by so many in World War I whilst looking to the future through a living remembrance. We are delighted that Sheffield City Council is embracing Centenary Fields, commemorating the centenary of World War I for the people of Sheffield in a way they can appreciate forever. We look forward to many more landowners following their lead.” This latest dedication will be the fourth protected Centenary Field in Sheffield, which recognises the Council’s significant commitment to not only the commemoration and remembrance of the city’s sacrifice in World War I and subsequent conflicts, but also the importance of maintaining and retaining good quality green space for the people of Sheffield.

Thousands turn out for food and music festival

THOUSANDS of people turned out for a fantastic weekend of delicious food and great entertainment for the Fox Valley Food and Music Festival. The two-day event was sponsored by NeoMed Mediterranean Restaurant, Live and Learn Consultancy, Stocksbridge Town Council and Henry Boot Construction and saw the crowds turn out for a packed weekend. The event was held on the centre’s third birthday weekend and for the first year the Fox Valley team partnered up with Valley Music Festival who provided a packed line up of musical entertainment, showcasing local artists and performers. On Saturday the main stage hosted a mix of cooking demonstrations from local chefs alongside musical entertainment and on Sunday both the bandstand and the main stage saw a packed line up of musical entertainment. Visitors browsed more than 60 food and drink stalls selling a fabulous line up of yummy sweet and savoury foods – from cheeses to chocolate, olives and delicious cakes and biscuits. Food to go options included The Greedy Greek Deli and Stone Bridge Pizza who were cooking handmade pizza on demand.

Other stalls included Craft Tea, Fruity Tipples, All things Brownie Beautiful, Fula Flavour and Ananda’s Vegan Marshmallows. The main sponsor NeoMed also had a stall with some delicious street food options to go.

The Nook Brewhouse also joined the event with a pop-up bar as well as the Gin Cart who also had a wide selection of different flavoured gins to try. As well as this the Little Badger Cider Company had plenty of ciders to choose from and local beer from Bradfield Brewery. The weekend included children’s rides and entertainment to get involved with a fruit and veg painting stall as well as free face paint. Britain’s Got Talent’s Madame Zucchini also joined the event to entertain young visitors. Fox Valley Event Manager, Kayleigh Marron, said: ‘The turnout we’ve had for our Food and Music Festival this year has been amazing. ‘The feedback from our visitors and traders has been really great and it’s lovely to see such a positive atmosphere around the centre. We just want to say a huge thank you to all our traders and sponsors and to everyone who came to the event and helped make it such a success, we’re already planning for next year.”

Renewed appeal following Chapeltown stabbing DETECTIVES investigating a stabbing in Chapeltown on New Year’s Eve last year have launched a fresh appeal for witnesses. At around 8.25pm on New Year’s Eve, December 31 2018, a 27-yearold man was seriously injured near to the Wagon and Horses Pub following a reported assault. Enquiries are ongoing to ascertain exactly what happened that evening.

Four men have been arrested as part of the investigation so far. Two 19-year-old men have been released on bail pending further enquiries. A 20-year-old man and a 17-yearold man have been released under investigation. Detective Constable Victoria Kenny, investigating, said: “We are continuing to carry out extensive enquiries

about what happened on New Year’s Eve, but I still need witnesses to come forward. “This happened right in the centre of Chapeltown close to busy pubs and bars, if you can remember anything from that night that might help, please contact us on 101 using the incident number 718 of 31 December 2018. You can also speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”

OPEN DAY Tues 25th June 9am to 7pm Located in North Sheffield on the Hydra Business Park, Chapeltown Academy was opened in 2014 and since then has grown from strength to strength. It is a small, personalised, A level Academy which serves north Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and surrounding areas. The Academy has recently achieved a ‘Good’ OFSTED inspection on the back of our best ever A level results, which are now consistently above the national average.

Chapeltown students have also gained 35% Russell Group University entry two years running, one of the regions highest figures. These universities which include Cambridge, Oxford, Durham, Edinburgh, Leeds, Sheffield etc. are the main focus of applications from the Academy. We are incredibly proud of not only these students but also the ones who arrived with lower aspirations than others but are now fighting for those top university places.

One of our students said: “Attending a Russell Group University, getting to study what I love, and ultimately being one step closer to achieving my dreams was something that during my GCSE years seemed unattainable, and I never could have imagined that I would be here today. Coming to Chapeltown Academy changed that, it really gave me hope that there was a future for me, and a chance to really get somewhere.” Our ethos is simple. Work hard, play hard, inspire

yourself, inspire others and we will provide everything you need to achieve your goal through our strong, caring, pastoral system. OFSTED recently said; “Students work very well together in a harmonious and closeknit learning community. They are confident and approach their learning with enthusiasm and commitment so that they can achieve their best.” We do hope that you will join us for our last 2019 open and induction day on 25th June.

RE-OPENED OCTOBER AFTER EXTENSIVE REFURB! The King & Miller in Deepcar was acquired by Bradfield Brewery in April 2018 and re-opened its doors to customers in October 2018 after an extensive refurbishment. With Farmers Ales on the bar at £2.50 a pint, a snooker table and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, the pub has been greatly received. Family friendly and dog friendly too, the pub has a great ambience where everyone is welcome. being added to the current layout, allowing for a larger dining area as well as being able to cater for larger groups and parties. This work is due to start late summer 2019 with completion hoped for before Christmas.

On the expansion of the Brewery’s portfolio and continued success for the King & Miller, Director John Gill commented, “Our aim when first starting out as a brewery was to produce traditional real ales that would stand the test of

time and I believe we have succeeded in doing so with our range of Farmers Ales that are increasingly enjoyed by many. One of the things we consider important to the brewery industry in general is that the traditional pub establishments remain in our society. We have therefore endeavoured to ensure that our pubs continue to offer the traditional pub environment, with contemporary additions to cater for the changing modern society.”

Gold mark for school

DEEPCAR St John’s Junior School has achieved the School Games Mark Gold award.

OFFICERS from South Yorkshire Police’s Operations Support Unit are reminding people that they have a zero tolerance approach to people abusing staff and that robust action will be taken, after a safety camera enforcement officer was threatened in Sheffield.

The Mark recognised the school’s commitment to and development of competition, school sport, physical education and physical activity.

At 11:33am on Tuesday June 11, officers were called to reports of threatening behaviour on Chapletown Road in Sheffield.

Miss Jones, headteacher, commented: “The staff at Deepcar have worked extremely hard to provide high quality physical activity opportunities. “It is really challenging to meet all of the Gold criteria so I am absolutely delighted.” The criteria required Deepcar to provide all pupils with two hours of timetabled P.E. per week, engage 50%+ of pupils in extracurricular physical activity every week, 15% of the pupils leading and officiating in physical activities as well as several other aspects.

Chapeltown motorist charged after threatening behaviour

At the scene, officers detained a 31-year-old man who is reported to have verbally threatened the camera van operative and caused damage by violently shaking the van. It is believed that the man attacked the van after he had become angry about the lack of signage, advertising that there would be a speed camera ahead.

Mr Priest added: “We have had a really successful year with sport. We have entered lots of competitions and we have been successful

in lots of these tournaments. It was great seeing the boys football team winning the cup at Hillsborough.

“Whilst I have many highlights I would say that being nominated in the ‘Active Girls Award’ category at the Sheffield School Active

Awards Evening is something that is really special.” The awards place in July.

take

Together with South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership safety camera vans are placed across our areas following concerns raised from communities. All safety camera van locations are advertised prior to the date via the safety camera website- https://www.safetycamera.org/. The camera van on Chapletown Road had been placed close to

the local school after the public expressed their worry that drivers were exceeding the 30mph speed limit. Safety Camera Manager Scott Dernie explains how the law does not require drivers to be warned about the presence of speed cameras. He said: “Drivers sometimes think that a speeding offence is not valid if the route does not have any safety camera warning signs, or if they do not see the enforcement vehicle or officer. This is not the case. “The only requirement in law, for a speeding offence to be valid is that the speed limit of the road must be properly signed.” A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempting to cause criminal damage and a public order offence. The man has been released under investigation and the Road Policing Group officers are supporting the victim. Officers are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident. If you can help with their investigation please call 101 quoting incident number 262 of 11 June.

PLANS SUBMITTED FOR A NEW DISCOUNT FOOD STORE IN CHAPELTOWN A PLANNING application has been submitted to Sheffield City Council for a mixed-use scheme including a discount food store and new houses in Chapeltown. Morbaine, working together with Sheffield-based property company Ackroyd & Abbott, is proposing a new discount food store and eight new houses on vacant land at the corner of Lane End and Thorncliffe Lane in Chapeltown. They say that the new food store will improve the shopping choice and convenience for people in the area and will regenerate a longstanding vacant site, which was once home to Council Trading Standards. It will be easily accessible by foot or public transport from local neighbourhoods. Before submitting the planning application, Morbaine and Ackroyd & Abbott invited local people to view the proposals and provide their feedback at a consultation session which took place in early April.

Adrian Crossdale, Director at Morbaine, said: “To ensure that this development is sensitive to the local area, we have carefully considered the site’s surroundings in our design and listened to the feedback from local people. “The eight new houses will line Thorncliffe View and complement this quiet residential street, with the new food store sitting behind this. Landscape planting will be provided on all sides of the site to act as a physical buffer and enhance the attractiveness of the site. “We have also made changes to the site layout following the public consultation to help overcome issued expressed by adjoining residents. “We are pleased to have reached this milestone and are confident this scheme will make a positive spaces will also be provided within contribution to the local area.” the development, including disabled Vehicular access to the new food and parent & child spaces, to ensure store will be provided from Lane End. Around 115 car parking

that shoppers do not need to park on surrounding residential streets. A new pedestrian crossing is also proposed on Lane End which also

responds to feedback received at the public consultation and will enhance pedestrian access in the wider area.

Organised by the mums, dads and carers of children at the school, the event promises to be a fun day out for all the family, as well as raising lots of money for the school. This year it will be officially opened at 11am by The Lord Mayor, Cllr Tony Downing. cy castles, glitter tattoos, face painting, raffle, bric-a-brac and the emergency services. pletree Childcare, Foresteers Forest School, Grenoside playgroups and St Mark’s Church children’s groups. CONCERN GROWS FOR MISSING MAN MINOD Monger from Sheffield has been away from home for seven days, have you seen him? Chief Inspector Helen Lewis, the officer leading the team who are searching for missing Sheffield man Minod Monger has tonight renewed her appeal for help to bring him home. Minod was last seen in the Ecclesfield area of Sheffield at around 5.30pm on Monday June 10. He is described as being Asian with dark black hair and is around 5ft 4ins tall. He was last seen wearing a white jacket, grey joggers and black Crocs. CI Inspector Lewis said: “Minod spends most of his time at home with

his family, it’s very out of character for him to be away from them for this long and we need your help to find out where he is and make sure he’s OK. “Minod is a very physically fit man and it’s possible that he could have walked a long way from home, become disorientated and is now not able to find his way back. “Please keep a look out for Minod his white jacket is very distinctive, his footwear isn’t what you’d expect somebody to be wearing in the awful weather conditions we’ve had in the last week.

“If you’re out walking your dog, having a run or travelling on foot please keep Minod in mind. If you have outbuildings or sheds in your garden or on your property, check to see if he’s there. Do you have CCTV? Please review it and let us know if you see anything that will help our investigation. “If you see Minod please do not approach him. He has vulnerabilities that mean he might find it distressing if he was approached by someone he doesn’t know.” If you have any information that you believe could help investigating officers, please call 101 quoting incident number 715 of 10 June.

Angela Smith MP Dear Editor, I am replying to comments made in this weeks paper regarding MP Angela Smith.

The Hollin Bustup

I know because my son is one of those young people. I asked my sons own MP to help in this endeavour but despite being high profile, he did not want to help. He had loads of ‘political clout’ as another contributor put it but wasn’t willing to give any support or help at all.

Anger as Hollin Busk decision delayed yet again, what cheek, how do the folk born and bred here feel? We have been staring up at a pit head, most of our lives! Now livid at townies now trying to tell us what to do and how we should live our lives! Most of us love animals as much as folks, there was one young pony in particular who resembled the film actress Veronica Lake. I wonder if she had been hurried into an unwelcoming short coming! If townies are wanting to keep living here, they should accept we country folk. Which reminds me, that the pit head could have been there to remind us that the fields around Busk-Lane have been undermined - now it’s our minds that are now getting tapped

This is just one example of how Angela Smith has helped her community. I have so many more I could share with your readers.

I hope Angela remains our MP for as long as possible. Give me an MP who goes above and beyond quietly and without fanfare any day of the week against those who care more about what being an MP can do for them rather than those they serve. ps. incidentally my ancestors lived and worked on the farm, their names Joseph & Mary Hattersley.

Grooming part two

Dear Residents, I ended last weeks letter with ‘This needs to end’. Here is how we could begin that process. We look at intervention projects that work in communities 67 houses planned for Wiggan Farm, Towngate Road Documents have been submitted to the similar to our own and copy them. council requesting planning permission for No point reinventing the wheel. Gardening Feature

Gardening Grow your own in a pot If you have ever thought about growing vegetables in pots, now is the time to give it a go! There is a huge variety of vegetables that can be grown in containers or smaller spaces to make ‘growing your own’ accessible to everyone. Some of the best veg to grow are Beetroot, Broad beans, Carrots, Dwarf French beans, Herbs, Peas, Potatoes, Radishes, Rocket, Runner beans, Chillies & Peppers,

Salad leaves, Salad onions, test if you’ve got it right is to Salad turnips and Tomatoes. put a finger in the compost It’s just a question of right – if it’s slightly moist just veg, right sized pot. Choose below the surface it’s spot on. large deep pots to grow root vegetables such as potatoes and carrots, and shallower ones for beetroots and onions. Vigorous growing veg such as courgettes, tomatoes and beans need large pots filled with good compost to accommodate their roots. Lettuce and herbs can be grown in window boxes. Containers can dry out very quickly so need frequent watering. Beware of over watering as well. The way to

Use compost specially designed for containers as it will hold onto water better and have extra nutrients added to get your plants off to a good start. Things to look out for when choosing the right one are soil and loam-based composts, extra nutrients, plant food and water-retaining granules. Most multi-purpose

composts are fine or a soil-based compost such as John Innes No3. For the greates choice of plants, grow from seed, but if you don’t mind too much about the variety, buy ready grown plants or plug plants from garden centres or mail-order suppliers. If growing from seed, check the instructions on the packet. Seed sowing time may vary depending on the crop but the main growing season for vegetables is from early spring to autumn. Don’t forget to feed your crops on a regular basis. Pot grown veg run out of nutrients due to the limited amount of soil they have to grow in, so a feed of general-purpose liquid fertiliser should be applied every couple of weeks.

your outside space then here are some gardening tips for this month from the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) … • Sow vegetable seeds and plant potatoes • Protect new spring shoots from slugs • Plant summer-flowering bulbs • Feed containers with fresh compost • Mow the lawn on dry days (if needed) • Cut back winter shrubs • Keep your eyes peeled for weeds starting to come through • Start conserving water • Re-pot houseplants • Prune bush and climbing roses

Finally, make sure you position your pots so they are in the best location for their growing needs. Most vegetable plants like lots of sun, so it’s important to site your containers where they will receive a good few hours of direct light a day. South or west facing locations are the best. Climbers such as beans or peas can’t cope with windy or exposed spaces so a sheltered spot suits them best against walls or fences.

BIRDWELL WHEELERS RUN AUDAX

Local Sport

WEATHER HITS GOLF WET weather made a serious dent in the weekday competitions for Stocksbridge Golf Club. The Dragons matches and the Club League fixture were cancelled, along with the midweek Stableford. The weekend two day Brian Langley competition was the only competition to survive the bad weather and even here the intermittent rain made a big impact. D. Buxton (8) won the stroke play format with a nett 135. G. Siddons (10) was second with a nett 136 and C. Walker (18) with a nett 137 was third.

Friendship club celebrates 100 years

THE Friendship Bowling Club in Stocksbridge is celebrating its centenary with an open day. It will take place on Sunday June 23, weather permitting, between 11am and 4pm, with free admission.

Riders at the start of the Audax ©John Woodhouse

LAST Sunday saw the sixth running of Birdwell Wheeler’s Audax event. The 65 mile route took in climbs of Holme Moss, the Snake pass and Jawbone Hill at Oughtibridge, a climb which featured

when the Tour de France started in Yorkshire. 47 riders set of from Birdwell Community Centre in the sunshine. Wheelers Trevor Mayne, Rob Parkes, Austin Watson, Marc Peasgood, Chris Jenkins,

Steve Myatt and Phil Adams were joined by riders from as far afield as Lincoln and Tamworth. The first rider back in 4 hours 20 mins was Mark Hudson from Sheffield and all riders returned by 4pm - well within the cut off time of 5:55pm.

More details on this and all the above can be found on the club’s website at http://www.birdwellwheelerscyclingclub.co.uk

FOOTBALL CLUB REMEMBER MANAGER WITH FAMILY FUN DAY ON June 22, Thorncliffe Football Club will be hosting a fun day charitable event in memory of Christopher Ledwood. Christopher was a 34-year-old football manager running his own daughter’s under-10 girls team.

There will be stalls, food, target bowling a brass band and much more - all with an Edwardian feel.

Sadly, and unexpectedly, he passed away on March 7 this year. This is a tragic loss, and is also less than 12 months since the family lost their 17year-old son Carter to cancer.

The Friendship is just as it sounds, a very friendly club welcoming people of all ages interested in Crown Green Bowling.

As a community and personal friends, the club are wanting to pull together to help raise funds for Christopher’s wid-

ow Becki and their daughter Matilda. As you can imagine this as had a huge impact on them both. In light of this, the club is hosting the family fun day at the St. Georges Football Club and then onto the Thorncliffe Pavilion Club. There will be a bouncy castle, football from 10am to 3pm, live music, kid’s ride, food van, disco, face painting, cake stall, ice cream van, raffle and a charity auction with prizes such as corporate VIP Newcastle United tickets, signed shirts and a £200 microwave. Everyone is welcome to attend this event for a great cause.

Stocksbridge see victory snatched away due to weather Sheffield Uni Staff 1st XI 129-7 from 40 overs (Les Harris 3-25, Jake Vickers 2-33) Stocksbridge 1st XI 103-4 from 21 overs (Jack Newton 59) Match abandoned due to weather FOLLOWING last week’s washout, Stocksbridge were back in action as they welcomed second place Sheffield University Staff to Bracken Moor for a top of the table clash. With rain in the air and a suspect forecast, both captains agreed to a reduced 40 over match in an attempt to get a result.

Stocksbridge got off to a good start as Captain Andy Hibbert won the toss and elected to field. However Stocksbridge soon found that they weren’t going to have everything in there favour today as Uni Staff started well and were proving to be a stern test.

The opening father-son duo of Andy and Joe Hibbert who had been so reliable this season struggled to make a break through and Uni Staff soon surpassed 50 for the lose of no wickets. This meant that is was now time for the change bowlers to step up and look to wrestle the game back in Stocksbridge’s favour. The tide soon turned when Jake Vickers picked up the opening wicket of the game as the opener edged the ball to Steve Perry at gully who took a good catch.

In reply the Stocksbridge openers Matt Price and Jack Newton got off to a good start before Price fell edging behind despite playing some lovely shots prior. Liam Grayson then joined Vickers bowled in unison with the experiNewton and the pair batted well, regularly enced Les Harris as the pair started to pick finding the boundaries and putting Stocksup wickets regularly and squeeze the runs. bridge into an excellent position for victory. The returning Chris Pickford and Joe Hibbert were at the crease as the pair looked to be ticking the scoreboard along to take Stocksbridge to victory. Pickford then hit a lovely six down the ground take Stocksbridge past 100, however with victory in sight, the heavens opened. Unfortunately for Stocksbridge this wasn’t just a quick shower, the rain continued to come down heavily and in turn the game was abandoned and the points were shared.

Mon - Fri 8.30 am - 5.00pm Sat 8.30 am - 12.00 noon Sheffield Uni Staff 2nd XI 130-8 from 35 overs (Ant Siddall 3-22, Chris Thwaites 2-36) Stocksbridge 95-7 from 31.3 overs (Harry Hurst 32) Match abandoned due to weather Next week sees a double header with Hathersage. The first XI make the trip to Derbyshire and the second XI will play host at Bracken Moor.

Hawks beaten but unbowed Sheffield Hawks 20-28 Dewsbury Celtic

DESPITE dominating for large parts of the match, Sheffield Hawks were very narrowly beaten by a well organised, if slightly fortunate, Dewsbury side. This young, new Sheffield side took the game to Dewsbury for much of the match and may well be perplexed that Dewsbury won. The first score of the match was from Dewsbury. Their backs, nippy and uick thinking throughout, realised that Hawks weren’t properly set up on the right wing and took full advantage, scoring in the corner. For the next 10 minutes Dewsbury pressure was weathered by the resilient Hawks and the oneway traffic was revered when Will Burns battered his was over.

Two quick tries by Dewsbury, taking advantage of errors from Hawks put the score to 14-4. At this point Hawks raised their game and Alex Coates scored another try at another crucial point. The Hawks ended the half 14-8 down, but dominant. Coates, Callan Drewery and, in a welcome return, Saul Hinchliffe started to dominate the Dewsbury forwards David Sedgewick carried strongly and the second half was there to win. Spencer Poppleton and Callan Drewery both scored tries after fantastic lines were run by Joe Littlewood, the returning Tom Griffiths and the ever-reliable Joe Littlewood. Whenever Hawks went in to the Dewsbury half they scored, or threatened to score.

Two tries were disallowed, one in the first half and one in the second, for reasons that few on the pitch or off could understand. However, as with

the last game against the Celtics two last gasp lucky scores won the game. As a team Hawks have raised their tempo and are completing their sets

and scoring with ease when they go forward. Eliminating errors at crucial times, even if under pressure, will be the next target for the team.

LOOK LOCAL STADIUM TO HOST OWLS UNDER-23 GAMES SHEFFIELD Wednesday’s under-23 side will play the lion’s share of their home games at the stadium of local side Stocksbridge Park Steels next season, subject to Premier League approval. A select number of fixtures remain at Hillsborough but the bulk of the home outings will take place at Bracken Moor. The move extends the long-standing association between Wednesday and Stocksbridge, which this summer sees an Owls XI take the short hop to face the Steels in a friendly encounter on Saturday July 13. SWFC academy manager Steven Haslam told swfc.co.uk: “We are really pleased to confirm this new arrangement with Stocksbridge Park Steels. “They have long been friends of our club so we

are looking forward to taking the under-23s to Bracken Moor.

“It is very much a mutually beneficial arrangement. From our perspective, it’s important that the younger lads play in more of a proper matchday environment on a regular basis. “The under-23s will still play a small number of games at Hillsborough so the step up will smooth the pathway, rather than playing games at Middlewood Road, where they train day in, day out. “For Stocksbridge, Wednesday playing at Bracken Moor will help raise some much-needed funds whilst hosting a Championship club along the way. The full fixture list for Neil Thompson’s side will be released in the coming weeks.
