SURVEY RESULTS RELEASED BY ROAD SAFETY GROUP A CAMPAIGN group set up to fight for greater road safety in Oughtibridge has released the results of a survey of local residents which found villagers were not happy with the plans outlined by Sheffield City Council. The Oughtibridge Road Safety Action Group (ORSAG) delivered a leaflet across the village asking for comments from residents on the council’s plans to make the accident-plagued junction at Orchard Street, Station Lane and Bridge Hill safer. The group has now revealed that leaflets returned show 75% of those that responded came down against the council’s plans, part of which is to close Bridge Hill to through traffic. The leaflet that went out to villagers not only wanted views on the council’s proposals but also outlined ORSAG’s ideas on what should be done, which include imposing reduced speed limits and new road signage.

THE PROBLEM JUNCTION IN OUGHTIBRIDGE

Residents were encouraged to let the action group know what they wanted to see changed to make the village much safer from passing traffic. Group chair Gary Chamberlain said: “At a council consultation regarding its proposal to change the road system in Oughtibridge it was clear that many local residents were in disagreement with the council proposal and ORSAG was formed to come up with a solution that would deal with safety concerns and be considerate to residents and businesses. “We are now looking at what local residents have told us to see if any new ideas can be implemented to ensure our proposal can help eliminate accidents happening at the junction. We would like to thank all that have taken their time in registering a vote and given feedback.” ORSAG recognises that it is not only Oughtibridge residents who use the roads and is still happy to receive comments through oughtibridgeroads@gmail.com.

AUTHOR SPREADS POSITIVE MESSAGE WITH DEBUT NOVEL “The message is a simple one - look after our wild spaces.”

LOCAL author Colleen Eccles has been inspired to write a novel which has a strong and important message within the story.

Colleen was educated at Stocksbridge High School and still lives in the area. She describes her book, The Horse and the Unicorn, as an uplifting story about two young people who are brought together through their love of animals and nature. They both aspire to have careers caring for horses and actually meet for the first time at the Great Yorkshire Show. There are twists and turns throughout the story and not everything is as it seems. “I had great fun writing this book,” Colleen enthuses.

“There are many characters within it which bring to life the spirit, joys and struggles of contemporary, rural life in the Pennines. The message is a simple one - look after our wild spaces. “Each and every one of us has a duty to care to our environment. We need to balance our needs with those of the natural world so we can enjoy and thrive in a healthy and beautiful planet. Species decline speaks for itself. “The figures are astounding and frightening. We all need to take responsibility and can do so very much with small changes.”

The book has been self published and will be printed and ready for sale by August 15. If you think you might like to order a copy, there is

a promotional page on facebook at www.facebook.com/ ColleenEccles.Author/ with a discount offer for pre-order. If you are not on facebook, you can email Colleen.Eccles. Author@gmail,com. Colleen has approached animal welfare charities that she supports to see if they are interested in helping sell the book in order to raise some money for themselves by doing so. Colleen concludes, “For me, it has been a joy to write this story and my only hope is that people will like it too. It would appeal to the young adult market and ages above, as the story explores relationships between people of all ages within the two families. So far I am getting really positive feedback, if this continues I might just be inspired to write a sequel!”

The Last Baden-Powell Challenge Award LAST week, Ranger Guide Esther Pearson, age 14, was given a big surprise when her District Commissioners, Sally Rogers and Alice Denton, turned up at her Brownie’s Leaving Ceremony in Coronation Park, Oughtibridge. They were there to award her with the Baden-Powell Challenge Award. Esther, or Ezzie Owl, as she is known by the 152nd Oughtibridge Brownies where she volunteers as a Young Leader, completed the Award in April after 18 months of hard work. The Baden-Powell Challenge is the highest award a Guide can achieve, and has to be completed before a Guide moves on to Rangers. The Award encourages girls to try new things and push their

boundaries – it’s not easy, but it’s worth it!

Esther said: “I’m really proud of my Baden-Powell Award. I did 10 of the suggested activities which included co-leading a Time Travelling Thinking Day for Brownies and Rainbows, making a recipe booklet, running a Guide games evening and communicating with our sponsored orphan in Uganda. “I also went on an adventure weekend at PGL, which involved climbing, crawling through tunnels and the big swing!” Esther has set herself a new goal of completing the Queen’s Guide Award. Esther is one of the last girls to receive the Award, as it is being replaced by the new Guide Gold Award when the new Guiding programme starts in September.

Her mum, Amanda Pearson is Brown Owl of the 152nd Oughtibridge Brownies and was one of the first to complete the Award 30 years ago!

The District Commissioners also gave Amanda a lovely surprise as they awarded her with her ‘10 years’ badge in recognition of 10 years service as a volunteer in Girlguiding. This completed a special evening of Brownie sports and a leaving ceremony for nine Brownies who have become mature, trustworthy, fundraisers and very special Brownies. If you are interested in volunteering with Girlguiding, or would like to join Rainbows, Brownies, Guides or Rangers, please visit www.girlguiding.org.uk.

Sheffield GPs top national average for patient satisfaction RESULTS from a GP Patient Survey published this month show that practices in Sheffield scored higher than the national average for patient satisfaction. Sheffield GPs also ranked highly on specific experiences of care, such as managing long term conditions. The survey was completed by 8,669 patients from across 78 GP practices in the city. It was conducted by independent social research institute Ipsos MORI. The results show that the vast majority of people in Sheffield are satisfied with the care they receive from their GP with eight in 10 patients rating their GP as ‘good’. 90% of Sheffield patients surveyed said the last healthcare professional that they saw at their practice was ‘very good’ or ‘good’ at listening to them and 96% of respondents had confidence and trust in the

healthcare professional they saw or spoke to. Sheffield practices scored above the national average for the majority of questions relating to satisfaction with services from GP practices and for a number of questions, Sheffield practices scores improved from last year. Dr Tim Moorhead, Sheffield GP and Chair of NHS Sheffield CCG said: “The results from this year’s survey are great and it is encouraging to see following extra investment from the CCG and hard work from practices that scores have improved since last year. “We do know however that we have opportunities to improve access to care, making appointments and GP waiting times and we’re working hard to do this. Our 16 neighbourhoods have now developed into 15 primary care networks. Through

these networks we will ensure all practices provide the same high levels of quality and access and will continue sharing information and best practice.” The survey also asked patients about their experiences of NHS services when their GP practice is closed. Patients in Sheffield reported higher levels of satisfaction than nationally, and an improvement in experience since last year with 94% saying they had confidence and trust in staff providing services when GP practice is closed. All GP practices in Sheffield are members of NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), the GP patient survey will help to identify key opportunities and influence the CCG’s decision making around primary care for the future. The team at NHS Sheffield CCG are working to analyse the data and identify next steps.

MINI POLICE SCHEME BEGINS IN HIGH GREEN SOUTH Yorkshire Police’s Mini Police scheme is in full swing in north Sheffield.

PCSO Karen watched on with pride as the new Mini Police at Greengate Lane Academy in High Green delivered their first assembly to the school on internet safety. They have worked hard to put this presentation together all by themselves. In September, the Mini’s will be learning about anti social behaviour and will work together on how they will deliver to the school once again. The scheme, which launched earlier this year, is currently a pilot project and has been rolled out across 12 schools in Sheffield and Doncaster. Mini Police is an innovative scheme for Year Five pupils, nominated by their schools to take part in a series of workshops delivered by PCSOs and Community Safety Project Officers.

Anti-social behaviour is one of the key topics covered by the sessions and aims to encourage children to think about what could cause problems where they live. Jane MacDonald, a Community Safety Project Officer, said: “This week, these children have been learning what classes as anti-social behaviour but they’ve also been looking at more serious crimes and the impact they can have on people. “The sessions are shaped by the children, if they mention something that is worrying them…or something they’ve heard about, then we’ll cover that. “Already, pupils are saying that they have learnt about the impact antisocial behaviour can have on people and what harm it can do. This can only be a good thing as they share that message with other children in the school and beyond.”

Yorkshire Day celebration returns to High Green HIGH Green Health Network Group are looking forward to celebrating their third Yorkshire Day Event. On Saturday July 27 between 10am and 3pm, everyone is invited to celebrate Yorkshire Day with a family event held this year at High Green Miners Welfare Hall. It is hoped

that the High Green community both young and old will come and share the occasion. A wide range of voluntary and community groups have been generous in giving their time and support on the day, in order to make this year’s event a memorable and enjoyable family occasion.

The range of activities will appeal to all age groups with line dancing, Zumba, a boxing display and a family sports day. We guarantee that a good time will be had by all. Admission is free and organisers say they look forward to giving a “Reight good Yorkshire welcome” to all who attend.

The chair, Eldon Hanson, when reflecting on the last three years, said: “When it began, the first event was a success but each year the event has got bigger and bigger with ever increasing number of residents in the High Green community sharing their skills and knowledge with each other. It is marvellous because

it is a day that brings our community together. “We are hoping the High Green community will come and support us again this year, so we can celebrate not just being from Yorkshire but being proud of living in High Green. We look forward to seeing thee on July 27.”

Tom loses four stone to win Man of the Year title focus would be on ‘diet’ food. However, he decided to give it a try after his wife Debra had decided to join and he thought he would go along with her.

After walking through the doors, Tom was pleasantly surprised to find that the support provided by the group was practical and encouraging. He also enjoyed following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, which is based on the science of satiety and energy density, enabling him to enjoy generous portions of healthy food to satisfy his appetite, so he didn’t have to go hungry. Tom says: “It was the little things like not being able to tie my own shoes or cut my toe nails I’d lived with High Blood Pressure for years and so I knew I seriously had to do something about my weight.”

A SUPER slimmer from Chapeltown has scooped the title of High Green’s Man of the Year 2019 after losing an incredible four stone.

“Asking for help takes strength of character and getting support to make changes has been the best thing about it. Now I look forward to going to my Slimming World group every Wednesday. There is lots of banter and laughter and I get some really good ideas too, from new recipe suggestions to ideas to boost my activity Tom Barlow has achieved this weight loss since levels. he joined in January this year, proving that Slim“I didn’t know what my mates would ming World works for men as well as women. think about me attending Slimming World Like many men, Tom thought that slimming but they’ve been right behind it. Once they clubs were aimed at women and assumed the realised I could still have a beer they start-

ed to take an interest and when they see me eating things like steak and homemade chips, chicken curry or a roast dinner they always ask how it’s possible to eat like that and still lose weight. What really had them sitting up and paying attention though was how well I was losing weight.” Lindsay Gillott, who runs the High Green Slimming World group says she’s incredibly proud of Tom: “He has done brilliantly and we’re all amazed by his transformation so far within four weeks of Tom starting he had come off his medication for blood pressure. He is a real inspiration to the group, Tom gets more excited about food than anyone I know! I have no doubt because of his passion and dedication he will be at his chosen Personal Achievement Target weight this year. We know that many men assume slimming clubs won’t be right for them, but Tom shows that once they come through the doors they do so well. Like Tom I would advise anyone who would like to lose weight to find the courage to take that first step.” The High Green Slimming World group is held every Wednesday at St Saviours Church Hall, Mortomley Lane at 9.30am, 11.30am, 5pm or 7pm. Anyone interested in joining the group can pop along or for more information they can call Lindsay on 0114 2845866.

Eileen to retire from school after 31 years A POPULAR supervisory assistant is retiring from her role at Deepcar St John’s Primary School after 31 years in the job. Eileen Peall, 71, supervises the children as they play at break time and says that it’s helped to keep her young. Her 44-year-old son, Stephen, was a pupil at the school when she started and she says it was a handy job to have at the time. A Year Six teacher, Matt Horner, was also a pupil at the school when she began.

Eileen told Look Local: “I’ll miss the children but I think it’s time to call it a day. I’ve been doing this job during the tenure of four different headteachers so I’ve seen a lot of staff and children come and go. “I want to stay active when I retire, I enjoy gardening so I’m going to do a few little gardening jobs once in a while. I’d like to do some voluntary work too.” Eileen is originally from Wimbledon but moved to Deepcar 36 years ago when her husband, Robert, took a job in the area.

The Nags Head at Loxley – the original Bradfield Brewery Tap since 2008. The pub has recently undergone works to extend the premises and refurbish the internal areas. Being of modest size and capacity, the extension has allowed for increased internal seating and a more spacious area for casual gatherings. Homemade food is served Tuesday to Sunday and the menu offers traditional pub food including their signature dish of Home-made Pies, offered with a free pint of one of the Farmers Ales, from just £6.50. A spacious outdoor seating area offers the ideal setting for the warmer days, and with popular walking destination the Dam flask a stones throw away, it provides the ideal stop off after a leisurely summer stroll. The pub is family friendly and dogs are very much welcome too. The King & Miller in Deepcar re-opened its doors to customers in October 2018 after an extensive refurbishment. With Farmers Ales on the bar at £2.50 a pint, a snooker table and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, the pub has been greatly received. Family friendly and dog friendly too, the

pub has a great ambience where everyone is welcome. Work on new kitchens on the premises has now been completed and food is now being served, and the chefs are now working hard serving up a menu of traditional, homemade pub grub. The area to the rear of the pub has now been transformed into a spacious family friendly beer garden and there will be a free bouncy castle 7 days a week throughout the school holidays. Further work is planned for the internal area of the property, with a further seating area being added to the current layout, allowing for a larger dining area as well as being able to cater for larger groups and parties. This work is due to start late summer 2019 with completion hoped for before Christmas. On the expansion of the Brewery’s portfolio and continued success for both outlets, John Gill commented: “Our aim when first starting out as a brewery was to produce traditional real ales that would stand the test of time and I believe we have succeeded in doing so with our range of Farmers Ales that are increasingly enjoyed by many. “One of the things we consider important to the brewery industry in general is that the traditional pub establishments remain in our society. We have therefore endeavoured to ensure that our pubs continue to offer the traditional pub environment, with contemporary additions to cater for the changing modern society.”

SPENNYMOOR TOO STRONG Stocksbridge PS 0-5 Spennymoor Town

By James Grayson (www.nonleagueyorkshire.com) Photo: Ian Revitt CHRIS Hilton was not “disheartened” as Stocksbridge Park Steels went down 5-0 to National North giants Spennymoor Town at Look Local stadium. The Steels actually flew out of the traps brilliantly and probably should have taken the lead in the opening gambits against a team two league higher. But a bizarre own goal and four James Roberts goals eased the North East outfit to victory. “I thought we started really well in the first ten minutes and we could have got our noses in front, but it is pre-season and it is not about results,” Hilton told Non League Yorkshire. “It is about the performance and I thought we were sloppy in the first half. Don’t get me wrong I thought Spennymoor were excellent. “Their front three and the centre-midfielder were different class. They punished us for being sloppy and giving the ball away. We didn’t do the basics and didn’t work hard enough. “We changed shape and worked a lot of harder in the second half. That’s what these games are for – Sheffield Wednesday and Spenny-

moor. It is about giving us tests against very good opposition. “I’m not too disheartened because there were a lot of good performances out there. We looked a different formations in the first and second halves. There were also a lot of trialists who played and it was a chance to look at them.” Luke Mangham should given Stocksbridge inside three minutes. He pounced on a badlytimed back-pass and went round Spennymoor goalkeeper Gould. The angle was tight, but his shot was rushed and the visitors were able to clear. New signing Josh Nodder then rattled the crossbar with a superb volley. It looked like the Steels were going to give their visitors a game. That was until a trialist’s harmless back-pass was completely missed by Steels goalkeeper Tom Crosby and rolled into the net. Stocksbridge never recovered. Roberts, a constant menace, constantly caused carnage got three before half-time. A tap-in six minutes into the second half was his fourth. Steels face Sheffield United on Friday 2nd August, K.O 7.45pm at Look Local Stadium. Tickets £5 Adults under 12s £2.

Briscoe breaks 34 minutes at Grimsby 10km GARY Briscoe’s rapid improvement continued as he ran an impressive 33-40 at the Grimsby 10k to finish in 10th place. Teammate Gareth Cooke also competed and placed seventh in a rapid time of 32-54. Penistone runners are continuing to be very successful at the Huddersfield 5km series, Jacqueline Howsham was first in the over-50 woman’s category in a time of 25-24. Other age group winners in the third running of the series were Rachael Mayston (first over-45 woman in 22-21), Julia Johnson

(first over-55 woman in 22-55), Sue Hall (first over-60 woman in 27-22), James Fryers (first under16 boy in 22-06), Kelvin Bowskill (first over-65 man in 22-45) and Bill Phillips (first over-70 man in 23-04). Bill’s effort was yet another club record. Mark Riordan took part in the Yorkshire Wolds Half Marathon. He placed 14th in a time of 1-3305. Ian Charlesworth took on the 2.6 mile Cracoe fell race which involves 900 feet of climbing. Ian

described the course as having a steady start, then a jump over a trailer and dry stone wall before a challenging climb up to the obelisk. Ian placed 30th in a time of 30-45. Results: Bamford Fell race: 30, Damian Kilpin 35-40; 57, Ian Charlesworth 38-47; 60, Shaun Walker 39-02; 103, Sarah Walch 42-36; 131, Brent Lindsay 45-37; 147, Susan Charlesworth 47-34; 176, Dawn Godley 52-40; 181, Myfanwy Cross 53-36.

PENISTONE CYCLISTS MAKE MOST OF FINE WEATHER DAVE Maddocks of Penistone Cycling Club took part in the circular route of the Yorkshire Wolds cycle challenge Sportive, a scenic 140 mile, two-day ride, with camping overnight. Dave was lucky with the weather and completed the route through beautiful countryside and undulating hills. Club members enjoyed an away day this weekend, in North Yorkshire. They covered a 53 mile circular route from Stamford bridge, which included 2,500 feet of climbing. The club members will meet as usual at Cycle Penistone on Sunday at 8.30am for a 9am start. All abilities welcome.

Both Stocksbridge sides secure places in the cup finals Sheffield University Staff 1st XI 42 all out (Jake Vickers 5-6, Joe Hibbert 3-13) Stocksbridge 1st XI 44-1 DESPITE heavy rain in the lead up to this game, the weather was holding off and the stage was set as Stocksbridge’s first XI welcomed Sheffield University Staff to Bracken Moor for the semi final of the Brian Winston Premier Cup. Captain Andy Hibbert lost the toss but much to his surprise, the visitors decided to bat first despite what seemed like testing conditions. The innings couldn’t have started any better for Stocksbridge as Joe Hibbert picked up a wicket with the first ball of the match, this was closely followed by the second wicket just two balls later. With the score 0-2 after the first over, Stocksbridge were now well on top. Joe Hibbert continued to bowl well and soon added a third wicket to his tally for the day. Andy Hibbert ensured it didn’t get any easier for the batsmen and he soon helped himself to his first wicket of the day. After excellent opening spells from the father-son combination of Andy and Joe Hibbert, it was now time for the change bowlers to take the game to the Uni Staff batsmen. Jake Vickers was the first to join the action as he quickly removed the resilient opener after forcing him to play a rash shot.

Jake Vickers 5-6

Vickers wasn’t done there though as he continued to take the game away from Uni Staff. Vickers was backed up well in the field, excellent catches from Steve Perry and Liam Grayson saw Vickers take his tally to three.

Les Harris then came into the attack and claimed the eighth wicket.

each for Harry Hurst and Jack Murfin leaving Stocksbridge on top at 105-7.

Vickers then wrapped up the innings with the final two wickets to claim his five-wicket haul and ending with career best figures of 7.4-1-6-5.

A late flourish got home team up to 146 before Will Cavanagh returned to the attack and took the three final wickets with great catches from Jon Pickford and Chris Ogley.

Stocksbridge knew that they now required just 43 runs to secure a place in the cup final. Openers Matt Price and Jack Newton seemed in no mood to hang around as both found boundaries easy to come by.

The Stocksbridge reply took an early blow with loss of opener Harry Hurst then Ant Siddall hit a useful 30 to get up to 70-4 before the drama of the game unfolded. The middle order fell quickly and cheaply apart from some positive batting from Jack Reeves leaving Stocksbridge on the edge at 93-9.

Jack Newton was the only wicket to fall, caught at slip for 17. Price was now joined by Chris Pickford and the pair quickly put the game to bed. Pickford hit a huge six over mid wicket to take the score to 44 and secure the victory for the first XI. Price ended unbeaten on 17 with Pickford unbeaten on eight. Ridgeway CC 1st XI 146 all out (Will Cooper 52, Chris Thwaites 3-22, Will Cavanagh 3-18, Jack Murfin 2-25, Harry Hurst 2-38) Stockbridge CC 2nd XI 147-9 (Chris Thwaites 37*, Ant Siddall 30) Stocksbridge CC second team travelled to Ridgeway CC first team for the semi-final of the Phil Denniff Intermediate Cup and won the toss with captain Chris Ogley electing to bowl first with some damp weather still around. Chris Thwaites made an early break through leaving the home team 5-2 then took a third wicket in an excellent opening spell with Ridgeway at 30-3. Batsman Will Cooper rebuilt the innings with 52 before two wickets

With the home team discussing where they would like the final to be Chris Thwaites and Paul Hargreaves came to the wicket with 10 overs left and 54 runs still needed. They calmly picked off singles and put bad balls away for boundaries leaving away team needing 13 off three overs and Ridgeway needing one wicket for a place in the final. It became 12 off two overs then Chris Thwaites nailed the last ball of the for six putting the score at 144-9 with one over left. Paul Hargreaves hit two runs to level the scores before a wide delivery gave Stocksbridge the incredible win and a place in the final. The celebrations began and great credit to Thwaites and Hargreaves who kept their nerve to take the team home. Both sides will now look forward their respective cup finals on September 14, however will now shift there attentions back on to the league. Next week sees the first XI travel to Totley Bent and the second XI host Richmond at Bracken Moor.
