ATTEMPTED ROBBERY AT THURGOLAND POST OFFICE TWO men armed with a knife attempted a raid on Thurgoland Post Office on Saturday afternoon.

The postmistress and her husband were in the premises on Roper Lane when two men entered and attempted the robbery at around 4.15pm. The staff were unharmed despite having a knife brandished in their faces. Police and crime scene investigators attended the scene soon after. Witnesses have reported seeing two men acting suspiciously just before the incident and posted their accounts on Facebook. One read: “Just witnessed two lads in black tracksuits, old scruffy looking clothes, with black hats on in Thurgoland sat on the wall outside the Post Office.

“Next thing, while I am driving past, they put balaclavas over their faces and went down the side of the Post Office towards the side door. “As I was working, I didn’t have time to stop but other people were there assisting. Please share and let people know. They were driving a silver Peugeot 208! Aged about middle 20s.” Someone else said: “I saw them hanging about near the Post Office and immediately thought to myself, they look dodgy! Never seen them before. “Ten minutes or so later, my son came home to tell me two lads had just attempted robbing the Post Office. I recall seeing the silver Peugeot too.”

BUTCHER TO CLOSE MANCHESTER ROAD DELI SHOP OWNERS CITE FALLING SALES FIGURES AS REASON FOR CLOSING JOHN Crawshaw Butchers have announced that the deli shop on Manchester Road is to close at the end of this month. The popular local chain has already closed the adjacent shop on Manchester Road and have opened at a new location at Fox Valley. However, the deli shop will now also close on August 31, leaving just the Fox Valley store in Stocksbridge. They also have shops in Chapeltown and at The Barracks in Hillsborough.

In a statement to customers, John Crawshaw has cited falling sales figures as the reason for the closure. The statement reads: “We would like to thank you for your loyalty and custom to John Crawshaw’s over the years. “It is with deep regret and sadness that the deli shop will cease trading on Saturday August 31. “This is due to falling sales figures over a prolonged period of time. You may be aware of the extremely trying times in retail sales, and

falling customer numbers in Stocksbridge and many high streets. “Despite these difficulties, we have tried to maintain business in the shop for both customers and staff. Unfortunately, we can no longer continue trading at a loss. “Our store in Fox Valley will be selling the usual full range of cooked products, in addition to this we are having a unit sited outside the shop producing a range of cooked sandwiches and snacks, providing employment opportunities for our present staff.”

COUNCILLOR CALLS FOR BOXING GYM SUPPORT AN ECCLESFIELD Parish Councillor has called for his elected colleagues to put their support into a pop up community boxing gym. Every Thursday from 4pm to 6pm, St Vincent’s Boxing Club, one of the oldest in Yorkshire, hosts a pop-up session at Thorncliffe Community Sports Bar in High Green. It has proved popular and Cllr David Ogle, who has been vocal in his support for boxing gyms as a way to help lower crime, wants more support for the sessions. Cllr Ogle said: “Thursday at the community pop -up boxing gym, it’s early evening, still warm but not as bad as it’s been. Ten kids training, usually more, but kids are away on holidays. “The enthusiasm in the room is joyous to see, these kids are focused but having fun.

The pop-up gym is in its third year and is thriving with preteen girls and boys. “Parents talk of improved behaviour at school and home. Of amazement at kids insisting on eating healthy food. Greens! And wanting water not a fizzy drink – “Because the boxing trainers Paul, John Booker, Jonny Peat said so”, the mums are telling me. “The pop-up gym is held at Thorncliffe Community Sports Bar in High Green, in the function room. The owners give the room time for free and have done so for almost three years. “Equipment is sparse, as space is limited, but the quality of instruction from the team of three coaches is top quality. “It’s clear to me and should be just as clear to any other local elected councillor, that this pop-up gym needs, and far

more importantly deserves, our full support. “One direct benefit to the community is that boxing gyms reduce crime and

60 years of outreach on the Whitwell Estate ON Sunday July 14, Stocksbridge Christian Centre hosted a special Songs of Praise to celebrate the beginnings of outreach work on the new Whitwell Estate in Stocksbridge. On 11 October, 1959, the Spink Hall Methodist Sunday School met for the first time in the Stocksbridge Secondary Modern School and became the foundation for the modern church located in the centre of the estate between shops, the pub and four schools. The Songs of Praise service consisted of a series of hu-

morous sketches on how the work with young people began and developed. Set as a church council meeting there was considerable adlibbing at the ‘top table’ and many asides made to the audience. The service began with a parade of the Boys’ and Girls’ Brigades with their banners. The sketches were interspersed with prayers, and readings. Following the Songs of Praise, the Brigades led the congregation out to the lawn at the back of the church where the

antisocial behaviour in the communities they serve, this is a clearly established fact.

“We are not going to get a copper on every street corner, we can create projects with a proven ability to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour and boxing is one such project.”

Charity riders aim to top £50,000 in Norway challenge A TEAM of hardy cyclists from South Yorkshire property firm Dransfield Properties have completed their tough fundraising challenge through Norway today – cycling 300 miles and tackling climbs the equivalent of Mount Kilimajaro. The Oslo to Stavanger ride is the 12th leg of an epic journey which has spanned 4,800 miles across 15 countries and in the last 12 years has raised almost £500,000 for charity. The annual ride is headed by Managing Director of Dransfield Properties, Mark Dransfield. This year has been a tough and emotional challenge as the team have cycled in memory of Mark’s wife Deborah Holmes who sadly died of cancer earlier this year. They are on target to have raised more than £50,000 this year for three charities – Action Against Cancer, St Luke’s Hospice and The Dransfield Foundation. Mark said: “Its been a really challenging ride this year, we weren’t expecting the climbs to be as punishing as they have been, in the last five days

we have climbed the equivalent of Mount Kilimajaro! “At the beginning of the week the weather was awful and the conditions and the hills have made it really tough for us all. My wife Debs has definitely been the inspiration for us all the keep going and I’d like to say a massive thankyou to every single person who has donated to our fundraising this year. It really means a lot.” This year the riders have climbed almost 6,000m as they’ve taken a tough, steep and remote route across Norway. The annual charity bike ride started in 2007 when the team cycled from London to Paris. Since that first ride the team have raised nearly £500,000 for charity and they have now covered more than 4,800 miles. Over the years they’ve covered punishing routes travelling through Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Portofino, Rome, Dubrovnik, Trieste, Munich, Berlin, Copenhagen, Oslo – and this year’s route which finished in Stavanger.

They aim to be back in London - where the challenge started – by 2021 and are already planning next year’s route which will take the team across the North Sea to Aberdeen where they’ll cycle to Morpeth in Northumberland. This year’s riders are: Mark Dransfield, Andrew Malley, Simon Bland, Paul Dransfield, Steve Wilson, Peter Swift, Johnathan Branton, Philip Prince, Richard Marshall, Robert Neale, Mark Yardley, Lee Newsham. Support drivers: John White and Paul Anderson. Pictures show: The 2019 Team Dransfield riders at their finish point in Stavanger at the Three Swords monument. To arrange an interview please contact Amanda Holmes on 07747 621902. WILD AT HEART

WILD at Heart – a community project run by Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust - came away with a gold award in the ‘Beautiful Borders’ competition at BBC Gardeners’ World Live after impressing the judges with their colourful display. The competition entry was designed to inspire people to try out simple wildlife gardening ideas in their own gardens or community spaces, connecting up communities and providing the resources wildlife needs to thrive. Wild at Heart participants were involved in creating the border, sowing seeds, growing plants and making items for the garden. Wild at Heart is an innovative project supported by the National Lottery Community Fund. It works specifically with adults aged 50 years and over to improve their wellbeing through seasonal nature-based activities. Over the last five years, more than 4,000 people in Sheffield and Rotherham, with an average age of 70, have taken part in Wild at Heart through more than 700 nature-based activity sessions. More than two thirds of these took part for over six months and over 1,700 reported being more active as a result. Wild at Heart worked with small local business Baldwin’s Gardening Solutions to create a wildlife gardening-inspired border similar to the Trust’s own community wildlife garden on Stafford Road, near Norfolk Heritage Park in Sheffield, while Stoneface Creative, another local enterprise donated an imposing sculpture made of local stone especially for the event. The judges told the team they were influenced in their decision to award gold after seeing the amount of interaction between visitors to the show and the Wild at Heart entry. People surrounded the display and talked about it with the team, with many saying they were inspired to give it a go at home after seeing how much could be done in such a small space.

with a gold award for our entry. It’s a great reward for everyone, especially the Wild at Heart participants who got really involved with the preparations and planting. “Over the last five years our project has proven that connecting with nature creates opportunities for people to spark joy, start conversations which strengthen communities, and can be really beneficial for local wildlife.

“We wanted to show that you can provide food, shelter and water for wildlife at the same time as creating ‘beautiful borders’; gardening for wildlife doesn’t have to mean beJenny King, Wild at Heart Project Leader, ing untidy! said: “We’re thrilled to have been presented

Monday September 30 30 Millhouse Green Male Voice Choirs next practice at 7.30pm. The practice will be at Millhouse Green Institute. All welcome, no musical experience necessary.

“The Trust’s own wildlife garden has been pivotal to the success of the project as we are able to use it for sessions throughout the year. We offer active gardening sessions where participants can share knowledge, plants and seeds and showcase simple ways that people can turn their garden into a haven for wildlife.” Wild at Heart sessions are open to anyone over 50, with groups ranging from nature walks and photography to wildlife gardening. How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Your Letters Angram Park Residents to decide how new Council cash for Angram Bank Park should be spent Readers may be pleased to know that Sheffield City Council is to invest £15,000 in Angram Bank Park. As part of this I have asked the Council to ensure that local residents determine how this money should be spent.

Fairlawns Middlewood pharmacy Dear Editor, Having just collected a repeat prescription from the pharmacy at the Middlewood surgery, I would like to respond to the letter from Alistair Nicholl in the letters page of August 1. I have had no problem at all the last few months in collecting my prescription - the medication has been ready for me to collect, the staff have been polite, and this morning every effort was being made to acknowledge that customers were waiting - although that wait was not for very long whilst I was there.

Dear Editor, I wonder if you would print the enclosed copy letter my husband and I received today. I have contributed to your letters page before as I know that your newspaper is widely read in our area. We have reported this to the Police, obviously. However as the sender, presumably a neighbour or former neighbour, wasn’t brave enough to sign the letter, I would very much appreciate the right to reply in your newspaper as I know they receive it every week as do we.

Please take this email as permission to share with whomever you feel would be able to share this appalling hate mail as I’m sure with the level of bile directed against our family, some other families may be receiving the same hate mail and feeling There have clearly been issues at the pharmacy, but that they too are being targeted and feel alone and the manager and her staff seem to me to be doing upset also. their very best to address them. The Council will be consulting over the summer - speaking with local groups and residents, both in person and online – and I have been given assurances that the comments will directly affect False prophet? how this additional money is spent in the park. Dear Editor I am determined to help deliver the park that In the February 2 2006 edition of The Telegraph, Angram Bank residents want and I look forward the classically educated Boris Johnson having to hearing all views over the summer. We need to read Lovelock consequently referred to him as ensure a strong local voice is heard by Sheffield a “sacerdotal figure” and concluded with the City Council and as a local councillor I promise to observation that “like all the best religions, fear do exactly that. of climate change satisfies our need for guilt, I’m glad the Council is providing this additional and self-disgust, and that eternal human sense money to improve the park, but this is a tiny that technological progress must be punished fraction of the amount I want to see coming into by the gods. And the fear of climate change is our green spaces. I know that Tory and Lib Dem like a religion in this vital sense, that it is veiled cuts have meant 50% less cash for local services in mystery, and you can never tell whether your which makes it harder to do – but this also means acts of propitiation or atonement have been in any it is even more important that every pound is spent way successful”. Councillor Adam Hurst, Labour Councillor for West Ecclesfield Though for someone who appears wedded to worshipping at the alter of the god of the free market which will provide by means of the magical influence of the invisible hand of market forces, that will in turn serve to propitiate the god of Oxley Park economic growth to the benefit of all, smacks of the proverbial pot calling the kettle black when it Those who use Oxley Park may be pleased to comes to sacerdotal figures preaching religion of know that a friends of the park group has recently dubious nature does it not? been set up. In the three years we had the car it was apparent to everyone except a very sad and horrible, hateful person that we used the mobility car correctly. I have always been a stay at home mom as quite frankly, looking after such a severely disabled child is a full time job in itself. We were blessed with a second son in 1997 and all was well until he developed the worst refractory medical condition anyone could have at aged three and a half. Needless to say, we thought 1 severely disabled son was hard work but two took it up to another level. In all this time my husband worked full time, never claiming anything. He used to say it was easier going to work than stay at home as a carer. As for being a benefit cheat let me say that I could only ever claim one carers allowance even though I cared full time for both of our boys. Carers allowance currently stands at £66.15 per week. How is that being a benefit cheat? As for keeping my son in, anyone who knows him understands that he does what he wants, when he wants so that charge is ridiculous. As Social Services and his consultants and his service provider are aware, actively involved in his care and fully aware of his daily circumstances that charge too is ridiculous. I do not intend to divulge details of my son’s complex medical conditions as they have a right like all of us to privacy and dignity. Suffice to say they have both been awarded highest rate of care and mobility indefinitely. I’m sure you will agree that DWP do not give out these awards to anyone who would not qualify. My husband has always been employed and in work until the last couple of years when he retired after being attacked on Hartley Brook Road by a man wielding an axe when he was at work as a collector for a loan company. He retired thereafter as now at 70 he feels unable to hold down a full time job. Is this hateful person saying that retired people cannot go on holiday or buy a hot tub?

Also the ‘decoys’ in our car are actually my eldest son and his carer which makes a mockery of us ‘not taking him out’. As for having our dog put down and ‘less barking’. Who but only the lowest of the low would even include that in a letter like this? Our much loved lovely boy in fact was diagnosed with liver cancer on a Friday and had to fall asleep the following Monday as there was nothing could be done for him. Someone is evil beyond imagining. Obviously they hate us so much even our dog is abused and vilified. My youngest son who lives in residential care is even brought into this hateful letter. Shame on them. There’s much in the news these days about ‘invisible disabilities’ but to be honest I cannot understand anyone who has seen, met or engaged in conversation with my son can be so utterly stupid to not understand the level and depth of his severe disabilities. He cannot function at all without one-to-one support and his speech is so unclear he cannot even hold down a proper conversation with anyone unused to his speech pattern as our neighbours would surely know for themselves. We have also alerted my sons consultants to this hate filled diatribe and also reported to Social Services as this is a safeguarding issue also. I hope whoever has written this vile letter does not become ill themselves as they must be so full of evil, nastiness and unpleasantness that it is eating them away. I genuinely feel sorry for you and hope that your loved ones don’t have to endure the same as our boys as quite frankly, I wouldn’t wish their severe needs on my worst enemy. I hope you can print this but if you are unable to I thank you for reading. Mrs L Smith

Chapeltown charity reveals financial impact of rare disease A CHAPELTOWN charity has revealed the results of its research into the financial impact of pulmonary hypertension. The Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA UK) has found people living with the rare disease are suffering financial distress and an unfair battle for benefits. The life-limiting condition affects the heart and lungs and the charity’s research shows that on average, patients in full time work at the time of diagnosis lose a third of their income. Over 80 per cent of those who have applied for benefits found the process difficult or ‘extremely difficult’. Over half were turned down upon first application, but 78 per cent of those who appealed had their application approved in the end. PH affects just 7,000 people in the UK. There is no cure and if patients don’t respond to treatment, they may undergo a lung and / or heart transplant. The results of the research show over half of people with PH say they now have more difficulty paying bills, and 84 per cent say life or travel insurance quotes are now more expensive. The PHA UK, the national charity for people affected by pulmonary hypertension, will use the results of its financial impact survey to campaign for change.

Iain Armstrong, chair of the PHA UK, lives in Stocksbridge. He said: “Pulmonary hypertension is a disease which robs people of their financial stability, through no fault of their own. This research shows just how serious the problem is and we now have strong evidence that the unfair benefits system is simply adding to the financial distress facing PH patients and their families. “It’s abhorrent that patients are having to go through appeals and tribunals simply to get what they are entitled to, battling ignorance along the way. These people are being let down by the very system set up to support them.” Symptoms of PH typically involve breathlessness, fatigue, black-outs and swelling around the ankles, arms and stomach. The disease affects the ability to carry out basic tasks and to get around and it can affect anyone, of any age. The Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield houses one of only seven specialist PH treatment centres across England, Scotland and Wales. The PHA UK is the only charity in the UK dedicated to supporting the PH community; made up of patients, their family and carers, and NHS professionals. The full results of the PHA UK’s financial impact survey can be accessed here.

Three Parishes woodland events FIND out about the history, evolution and future of our woodlands with the Three Parishes events. The events throughout September celebrate the woodland vision of the three parishes of Stocksbridge, Ecclesfield and Bradfield who are working together at a landscape scale to put forward an idea about the future for woodlands in the area. The events cover key themes of heritage, archaeology, woodland management, wildlife conservation and supporting species. The talks and walks are bookable so that organisers can plan for numbers and have your contact details should arrangements change due to bad weather. In Stocksbridge, on Saturday September 7 at the Inman Pavilion and Oxley Park there is a nature walk from 10.30am to 11.30am and a talk by Richard Godley entitled Lumberjills from 11.30am to 12.30pm.

In Ecclesfield, on Saturday September 14 at Grenoside Woods and at the Reading Rooms, there are children’s activities 10am to 2pm and a talk by Melvyn Jones from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. Finally, in Bradfield on Saturday September 21 at High Bradfield St Nicolas’s Church, there is a talk by Julie Riley, community ecologist, from 5.30pm to 6.30pm and then a walk by Robert Bell of South Yorkshire Bat Group, from 7pm to 8.30pm. The Ecclesfield and Bradfield events are in the Heritage Open Days Programme at https://www.heritageopendays. org.uk/ For more information about any of the events, including whether events are accessible for those with limited mobility, please contact the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership Team at s.poulter@wildsheffield.com or on 0114 2634 335.

SPEEDWAY STARS OUT OF LUCK SHEFFIELD boss Simon Stead felt his side were unlucky to be on the end of a 53-37 scoreline at Leicester.

“One rider in particular in TK (Todd Kurtz) had more bad luck in one meeting than some riders have all season.

Tigers were just four points down with nine races gone, but the hosts reeled off four straight heat advantages to ensure they maintained their unbeaten home record with two races to spare.

“Obviously we’re disappointed, we don’t go anywhere to lose, but we were a bit rusty early on having not raced for a while and we didn’t get off to the start we’d have liked.

It was another frustrating afternoon on the road for the Owlerton outfit who were restricted to five race winners and just three heat advantages against a strong Leicester side - but boss Stead says the stats aren’t a reflection of his side’s efforts. “We didn’t have the rub of the green and we’ve had serious amounts of bad luck,” Stead said.

“When you go through it all, we probably threw four, six points even away. “So whether it would’ve changed the final outcome or not I’m not too sure, but the scoreline would’ve looked quite different had we had a bit more luck on our side. “While we weren’t good enough to win on the night, there are still some positives we can take from this. “A big shout out to the fans who were here to cheer the boys on today; we appreciate the

support as ever and we hope we can get back to winning ways very soon for them.” Danny King was the only Sheffield rider to reach double figures while captain Kyle Howarth was in the thick of the action. Todd Kurtz and Justin Sedgmen both managed a race win in their first meeting since signing for the Tigers whilst Josh MacDonald also took the chequered flag in Heat Two. Drew Kemp found three third places from his four outings while reserve Zaine Kennedy endured one of the tougher fixtures of his maiden British Speedway campaign. Tigers head to Edinburgh on Friday before hosting the Monarchs at Owlerton on Sunday (5.30).

Stocksbridge go back to the summit of Division One Stocksbridge 1st XI 243-8 (Jack Newton 125, Ozzie Warren 47, Chris Pickford 27) Sheffield Centrailians 1st XI 104 all out (Joe Hibbert 4-22, Jack Newton 3-8, Andy Hibbert 2-22) DESPITE the wet weather throughout the previous week, the sun was shining down over Bracken Moor as Stocksbridge first XI welcomed Sheffield Centrailians. It was the visitors who won the toss and elected to field first. The Stocksbridge innings got off to a slow start with the opening bowlers keeping it tight and make it difficult to score runs easily. Just as the Centrailians thought they were on top, Jack Newton began to change the tide as he started to find the boundaries and the run rate quickly increased. The opening partnership passed 50 before Matt Price fell for a gritty 10. Chris Pickford joined Newton and the pair seemed to score freely. The change bowlers were having little success with Newton and Pickford finding the boundaries at regular intervals. Pickford was the next man to go, top edging the ball back to the bowler for a well made 27. This brought Ozzie Warren to the crease and him and Newton scored quickly as Stocksbridge accelerated and looked set for a formidable total. Newton was now well set and was dispatching the bowling to all parts, Newton reached his century for the second time this season and didn’t look like he was finished yet. Both Warren and Newton fell at similar times but had both made excellent contributions, Warren added 47 before Newton was finally removed for a wonderful 125.

Jack Newton

Andy and Joe Hibbert took early wickets to damped any hopes that Centrailians had of winning the game. Joe was the first into action picking up the opening three wickets of the innings with some hostile bowling. Andy, who never likes to be outdone by his son, replied with two wickets of his own and all of a sudden Centrailians were five down.

The middle order came and went looking to Jake Vickers was then brought into the action score quick runs and Stocksbridge posted and he quickly claimed a wicket to reduce 243 from their allotted overs. Centrailians to six now. The game was now This meant that Sheffield Centrailians re- just meandering as there was only to be one quired 244 to win with Stocksbridge well winner. A slight rally for the seventh wicket in the driving seat at the half way stage. In saw Centrailians up to 100. Joe Hibbert was truth the innings never really got going for brought back into the attack to break the Centrailians, the father-son combination of partnership and claim his fourth of the day.

Fittingly the hero with that bat also finishing the game with the ball. Newton came into the attack and quickly picked up the last three wickets of the innings for just eight runs. This secured a 139 run victory and more importantly a vital 25 points for Stocksbridge which now takes them back to the top of the Division One table. Stocksbridge 2nd XI 97 all out (Elliot Freeman 24, Harry Hurst 22) Sheffield Centrailians 2nd XI 98-2 (Paul Hargreaves 2-24) Next week sees the first XI welcome Sheffield Medics to Bracken Moor and the second XI make the journey to Ridgeway.

PIONEERING WHEELER RECOGNISED IN 1967, Christine Minto, Birdwell Wheelers club president, competed in the very first 24-hour cycle time trial that was open to women. The event was held on roads in Cheshire, North Wales and Shropshire being organised by the Mersey Roads Club and the Merseyside Ladies Cycling Association. Christine was the fastest of the three riders covering 409.16 miles. This mileage established a National Competition Record. In the following two years, Christine upped the record to 420.05 miles and then 427.86 miles which was unbeaten for 14 years. Every year since competing Christine has supported the Mersey 24-hour race helping in numerous ways. At this year’s event she was presented with a plaque in appreciation of over half a century as a rider and helper by Ruth Williams, the President of the Merseyside Ladies, who was second in that inaugural 24-hour women’s event with 403.70 miles.

Last Sunday members of Birdwell Wheelers were out in the morning with threatening weather forecast for later in the day.

Dave Hudson, Chris Jenkins and Phil Adams set off at 8am to ride a 60 mile loop to Bank Café at Langsett via Holmfirth. Trevor Mayne and Paul Heggie set off from Birdwell obelisk at 9am and rode a 35 mile loop also to Langsett via The Strines. Club President Christine Minto rode a solo 50 mile loop from Wombwell through north Nottinghamshire whilst Dave Scargill headed out east on a 110 mile loop via Goole. This coming Tuesday the club is running the first of two hill climbs, this being up America Lane at Hoober. The next day the club’s postponed 10 mile time trial Championship will take place on the Park Springs course during the Barnsley RC organised event. Both events start at 7pm and visitors are welcome. This Sunday’s club ride is to Snaith leaving at 9am from Brewers Fayre roundabout at Wombwell. Again visitors are welcome. More details on this and all the above can be found on the club’s website at http://www.birdwellwheelerscyclingclub.co.uk

WALKING FOOTBALL UP AND RUNNING

THEY say that from acorns grow mighty oak trees, well similar is happening at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre Walking Football.

The class started in 2016 with just enough each week for five or six aside. Sometimes only three a side. Out of the original group that started, four still play every week but there are now about 18 who turn up regularly, on average 14 making up seven a side. The youngest is 59 the eldest nearly 72. Besides the football the session has created friendships, camaraderie, laughs and fitness. A spokesperson for the club said: “Who would ever believe that we would be playing football at our time of life experiencing the craic, laughs, competiveness and smell of liniment that we experienced 30 or 40 years ago? It’s brilliant. “Now walking football has taken off both locally, nationally and internationally and Stocksbridge now enter tournaments all over Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. We have also been and played in an international tournament in Holland and just booked for a tournament in Portugal next April. “Our fist experience of Tournament football was in 2016 at memorial tournament in Rotherham held in memory of a player who played for the Millers over 60s. We got to the fi-

nal! But got narrowly beaten. The exact same happened in 2017 and 2018 so this September we are aiming to win and confident we can enter two strong sides. “Earlier this year we did in fact win our first tournament in Doncaster. A fantastic performance by those who played.

“In May, a squad of eight entered a tournament in Holland at Leidenshendam – we were successful in winning our group stages but unlucky only to finish third in the finals but we were up against strong teams which included the Sheffield United squad who actually won the tournament without conceding a goal – but it did have three players from the current England over 60s team. “The football was followed by a great evening of drinking, eating and dancing at an event put on by our hosts. “On July 28, we were invited to enter a team into the Steel City Cup. In fact we entered two teams. This is a very difficult tournament and is for all the teams who play in the Over 60s Northern Premier League - teams from Blackburn, Leeds, Middlesbrough, Manchester, Grimsby, Redcar, Matlock, Harrogate, Sleaford and Sheffield – who play against each other every month. “Our two teams were not overawed by this and gave great account of themselves. Both teams finished in third

or fourth place in their qualifying group and then went into the Plate Trophy. “One Stocksbridge team was controversially eliminated in the quarter final with a dodgy pen-

alty. The other team managed to get to the final but were narrowly beaten 4-3 by Grimsby – who are currently the Northern Premier League leaders.

“Next year we have entered a competition in Portugal – for the EuroCopa over 60s Tournament. Two full days of football followed by a presentation dinner. Looking forward to making memories again!”

Local Sport ERNEST THORPE Halifax Road, Thurgoland 0114 2882152

Penistone Church 1-2 Silsden PENISTONE Church made a losing start to their Toolstation NCEL Premier Division campaign, going down 2-1 at home to Silsden. Khurram Shazad opened the scoring for the visitors on 22 minutes and with five minutes remaining, Aidan Kirby all but sealed the win with their second. But big Brett Lovell had the final say, pulling a goal back for Church in the final minute of the contest. As expected, Silsden provided excellent opposition which was reflected in the score line

in a game played out in front of a crowd of ”We have a practice game this week so that over 200 people. will give those people on the fringe for an opportunity to impress and then we’ll prepare Church manager Ian Richards shared his for the FA Cup game which is a difficult long thoughts after the game. Pic: Ian Revitt “Today I think the better team won, I think that Silsden are a good addition to this league, they try and play football in the right manner, they’re very effective going forward, they have a clear way of playing and in the first half they did it very well.

Coutts (10) was second with a net 65 and Eddie Steele (13) was third with a net 67. Saturday August 3 saw the gents play the Monthly Med-

On Sunday August 4 the ladies competed for the Glen Trophy, a stroke play competition. The competition was won by Helen Moffett (30), the Ladies Section Vice-Captain, with a net 69. The competition is open to all and details can be obtained from the club on 0114 288 2003.

Chris Hilton continues to build his squad One such counter attack resulted in United ready for the start of the season on August taking the lead with a good break down the 17. left side of the pitch providing a cross into the box the Steels defence couldn’t deal with. The score was 1-0 at half time.

Play in the second half followed a similar pattern with Steels going forward but failing to convert their chances. In the last half hour both sides made changes and this disrupted the momentum for Steels and United increased their lead with two quick goals, the full time squad’s fitness was now showing through and they finished the game strongly to run out 5-0 winners. This was another good test for the Steels squad and there was a lot of positives to take from the game. With two more friendlies to play away from home before the first League game, the preparations are coming together.

PENISTONE Footpath Runner Jon Waller took on the challenge of the Tromsø Skyrace in Norway. Described as big, bad and beautiful, the race attracted an international field of top skyrunners, with a record-breaking 52 nationalities putting their legs and lungs to the ultimate test. It features three torturous climbs, exposed ridges, scrambling sections over technical terrain, boulder fields and ice-cold river crossings. On top of that, runners were up against the unforgiving Nordic weather: wet, wild and windy. The race was 57 kilometres in distance and included 4,800 metres of climbing. Jon did incredibly well to be comfortably inside the first 100 finishers placing 75th out of a field of 888. Junior Graihagh Turner broke the club’s girls under-11 800 metre record with a very rapid time of 2-51. Serial record breaker Scott Hinchcliffe broke the club’s senior male 30,00m track record in a time of 8-58. Gary Briscoe continued his fine run of form by finishing 6th at the York 10k out of a field of 6,000. Gary just missed out on setting a personal best by three seconds in a time of 33-43.
