LEISURE CENTRE RECEIVES £166,000 FUNDING BOOST PENISTONE Leisure Centre has been successful in an application for £166,000 of funding from East Peak Innovation Partnership (EPIP is European funding) towards Phase one of their refurbishment project. Along with £60,000 of money from BMBC Section 106 fund, money which housing developers set aside to improve local amenities, the funding means that work will be able to start on the improvements.

The space now

Rachel Gibbons, chair of the board of trustees, told Look Local: “This is fantastic news! We can now start to make huge changes to improve the centre for the whole community.” A spokesperson for the centre said: “Phase one of our project refers to internal reorganisation of Penistone Leisure Centre to maximise the potential of the building and to make the inside accessible to everyone in our community.

Artist’s impression of how it could look

“The current layout limits its use, meaning people have to walk through the main hall during classes to access

the gym rooms, party room, kitchen and storage. Our new layout will mean that there is a new gym room with large windows with views down the fields, a new skate store and workshop, a large cafe with windows looking into the hall so that you can watch activities whilst enjoying a snack/drink, a bigger second room for classes, improved toilet facilities, a fully accessible changing space and a meeting room. “We anticipate the whole of phase one costing just under £300k. For us to complete the project, there is a lot of work still to do and more money to raise. If anyone can help in any way, with either time or money, we’d be very grateful. “We are going to need a small army of volunteers to help with the project - from researching what equipment we need to buy, to mucking in with labour, to helping with fundraising or becoming a trustee to help lead this exciting project. “We’d love to hear from anyone with skills to share. Penistone Leisure Centre has been run by the community, for the

community since it was taken over from BMBC in 2012, and thanks to the support of our fantastic trustees, volunteers and the community we’re going from strength to strength, but there’s always more to do.” The money secured from EPIP means work can start in the near future and will be complete by this time next year. The EPIP funding, along with the section 106 money, covers the bare bones of the work and further grant applications are in progress, along with more fundraising to do, in order to find enough money to cover cosmetic works such as plastering, decorating and furnishing the spaces. There are further plans for the future of Penistone Leisure Centre in phase two to landscape the grounds to install accessible ramps to the centre and improve parking - some funding is already secured for this but there more to find. Phase three will be to build an extension to the centre to provide another room for classes and more toilets and showers.

Inspiring art and photography from the Sheffield Lakelands

A GROUP of Pennine artists, including local painter Jacquie Prachek, have come together to celebrate in different mediums the beauty of the Sheffield Lakelands this autumn. Catchment art exhibition runs from Saturday October 19 until Saturday October 26 at 35 Chapel Walk in Sheffield city centre from 11am to 4pm everyday with a late opening on Tuesday until 6pm.

Jacquie Prachek of Deepcar is a long standing member of Pennine Artists. She said: “This area of Sheffield is much loved and valued by different people for different reasons, especially its scenery. We thought that

there was no better way to celebrate that than by portraying it using our artistic skills. We hope that the people coming to view the exhibition will also go and re-discover this lovely countryside or perhaps even go to see and explore it for the first time.” To complement the art exhibition, the Sheffield Landscape Partnership are working with local photographer, Russell Hague, to document this special area in a photo census. Jacquie continued, “We know people love this area and there are many old photographs hidden away in people’s attics that could tell us interesting lost stories about the area. The

large masts used in Bradfield area to defend the dams from enemy attack are one of these historic landscape features that are unique to the story of Bradfield in WW2.” Throughout this four-year Heritage Fund project, which is made possible by National Lottery players, themes of art in the landscape and the digital landscape will be covered. For more information about the photo census contact Sarah Poulter at the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership: s.poulter@wildsheffield.com

MUSIC, MEMORIES AND CELEBRATION THIRTY years of volunteer work was celebrated on Saturday October 12 at St Saviour’s Church in High Green. The Alzheimers Thursday Club was formed in 1989 to assist local people suffering from early stages of Dementia/Alzheimers. On Saturday, historic St Saviours Church rang with the heart-warming sound of people sharing memories, afternoon tea, and unforgettable songs. As a celebratory tea was served by volunteers, vocalist Susan St Nicholas entertained members and their carers, with songs from yesteryear. To mark the importance of this voluntary work, a very willing and supportive special guest was, Tony Downing, The Lord Mayor

of Sheffield, who said: “The Thursday Club performs an outstanding service in the High Green community.” The club was started by Dorothy Wood and a group of volunteers as a social and activities group to engage and stimulate members, both physically and mentally; also, giving their carers some much needed respite time. Each week, the members have the opportunity to make new friends, participate in games and crafts, and get treated to a home cooked lunch. Funds raising events are organized throughout the year to finance the club. Volunteers or sponsors are always needed to ensure this valuable work continues. For further information, telephone Dorothy Wood on 0114 2846100.

JOIN IN WITH THE SHEFFIELD HERITAGE FORUM THE autumn 2019 Sheffield Heritage Forum will take place on Saturday November 9 at Bolsterstone Village Hall with a fantastic morning lined up with lots of great content – and it’s free to attend. This autumn forum will include a rare screening of recently restored and digitalised vintage film of life in Hillsborough from 1930 to 1950. ‘Hillsborough Retale’ features maypole dancing, Sunday school

queens, Whit walks, camping, brass bands, the Star Walk, weddings and day trips to Cleethorpes - fascinating glimpses of life in a simpler age. There will also be updates and presentations from the Bolsterstone Archaeology and Heritage Group, Wardsend Cemetery, and the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership.

Complimentary tea and coffee will be provided - plus an optional free guided walk around this historic village after the forum ends at 1pm. A spokesperson said: “Join us in Bolsterstone for a forum with a north Sheffield flavour, find out what’s going on in and around Sheffield and network with other likeminded people.” The Sheffield Heritage Forum begins with registration at 9.45am,

starts promptly at 10am and finishes at 1pm. Places are free but must be booked online - please register at Eventbrite so numbers can be managed – https://www.eventbrite. co.uk/e/sheffield-heritage-forumtickets-77279004583. These biannual forums are organised by Joined Up Heritage Sheffield. This is a broad range of organisations and individuals representing Sheffield’s very diverse

heritage sector, who have come together to explore ways to develop a better resourced, better connected and better communicated heritage offer for a wide range of audiences. They aim to provide networking opportunities in a relaxed environment, and a way to share news and good practice for heritage professionals and anyone interested in the history and heritage of the Sheffield area.

CAN YOU SPARE SOME TIME TO HELP ON THE MEADOW? CARR House Meadows Nature Reserve is a series of unimproved grasslands and traditional hay meadows in Ewden Valley. The whole of Ewden Valley was requisitioned to build the reservoirs and since that time Sheffield City Council have owned the land and rented the fields out to local farmers to manage. For the last 20 years the fields have been managed as a Nature Reserve by Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust. In the summer time they have brilliant displays of wildflowers and in the autumn a wide array of Fungus. Because they are not intensively managed they provide a lot of habitat for mammals and birds on site in the hedgerows and dry stone walls.

In recent years, Wild Sheffield have been noticing an increase in the amounts of scrub and bramble on site and so over the winter period we are running a series of volunteer work days on the third Monday of every month to help open up the lower fields. The group will meet on Carr House Lane in the reserve car park at 10am and will be working in the fields opposite Carr House Farm but there is no parking there. If you would like to join in please wear old, outdoor clothing and stout footwear. Bring some dinner and a drink if you would like to stay all day. Gloves, tools and biscuits provided. It’s not too late to make a Will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local Estate Planning Consultant of 13 years experience. I am an expert in helping people arrange their Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Pre-paid Funeral Plans. Along with my colleague Haworth Ward-Drummond we specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional advice, but with a personal touch. We offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic Will • Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney • Protecting your home for future generations • Pre-paid Funeral Plans We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.

A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the

highest standards of conduct at all times. All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

I wish to reply to the Barnsley octogenarian LL/1083. I have no problem nailing my colours to the mast, I voted Brexit and would do so again even though I may be subject to vitriol from remainers who are potentially as much as a threat as Brexiteers.

I did not vote leave because Turkey may at some time join, I voted leave because at this exact time any person from any part of the E.U., be they good or bad, can walk into this country and start claiming from our generous benefits system which often pays more than they could earn in their native lands. The benefits in their native lands are not a draw to our claimants as they are so low hence why none go. We are ruled by Brussels. I now have a vacuum cleaner with a low power motor as a result of E.U. regulations, fishmongers that sell packaged fish must state on the packaging “may contain fish due to E.U. regulations.

Dear readers,

A council where every elected councillor has the ability to allocate funds, not just the eight plus that form a majority.

Once the centre reopened, and normality was quickly restored, my focus has been on ensuring that such a situation is not allowed to happen again. I made enquiries about suitable working solutions to the relevant points of access on the car park – including greater use of barriers – and over the next couple of weeks work will be undertaken.

The Wilson Cup, a two round stroke play competition normally played over one weekend, has been completed but over two separate weekends. Dave King (17) was the overall winner with a net score of 126 shots and with both rounds under par is a deserved champion.

IT’S been a couple of busy weeks for Valley Hill Runners. Over the weekend of October 12 and 13, two mixed teams from the club took part in the Round Rotherham Relay with an additional four VHR members completing the full course of 50 miles. These were Pete Taylor, who achieved a personal best, Neil White, Jonnie Fenton and Judith Kippax, who came third in her age group. Over the same weekend, Richard Bowles came 10th in the Hardmoors HM and Kevin Gibson completed his personal challenge of finishing the A-Z of half marathons in Zagreb. Last weekend saw John Power complete the Amsterdam Marathon and Rebecca Sanders The Yorkshire Marathon, which was her first. In addition to all this expended energy Louise Harrop and Richard Bowles did the Sherwood Pines 10k and Paul Martin the Holmfirth 10k. Anyone interested in joining the club, please see our Facebook page, Valley Hill Runners Sheffield, or the website www.valleyhillrunners. com

Gareth finished strongly to place fourth overall in a high quality field as the race doubled up as the English Marathon championships. Gareth’s time of 2-2502 broke his own club record and is the fastest marathon time by a Barnsley club based runner for over two decades. Gary Briscoe was the second Penistone runner home in a very impressive 2-35-28 which was a new personal best and the third fastest time ever by a Penistone runner. Faye Williams topped off a great day for Penistone with a time of 3-25-31 which was a club record in the

This year the event took place locally at Fairholmes, with 250 teams, including the top fell runners from across the UK taking part. All three teams ran well on a beautiful autumn day in the Peak District. The routes for each leg were challenging but the good weather made them more enjoyable. Stocksbridge U15 66-19 Barnsley U15 THE junior Pigs redeemed themselves after an unusual below par performance last week against a strong Doncaster side. It was a near perfect display of how rugby should be played as they swept aside Barnsley 66-19. The forwards put in magnificent effort and created the space for the backs to play out wide to score. It was a first start for the new tight head prop Harvey Dawson-Hopkin and he anchored the rampant scrum with Sam Miles, Ollie Porter, Arun Booth, George Pollard and Aaron Kaye providing barn storming runs and hitting rucks like raging bulls.

The perfect developing partnership of pace, power and vision between fly half Jack Leary and Harry Ryan released the marauding backs loose into space. The ever-improving Mason Fletcher and returning to form Harry Brownrigg showed their footwork and skill. Full back Logan Hannah steadied the ship from behind with deadly counter runs and outside centre Aaron Knowles fed the passes or hit the gap with ease. Winger Ross Evans took his turn for the rotation to be one of the impacts from the sideline and he not disappoint with a variety of finishes from sheer pace, poise to power to run in five tries. Two came from Harry Ryan and Harry Brownrigg

also bagged a brace. Ollie Porter and George Pollard also crashed over. Everyone played there part and contributing to the scrum were Joe Martin, Ty Coombs and Evan Tabner. The two scrum halves, Josh Gregory and Harrison Clamp, provided excellent service.
