FUND SET UP FOR FLOOD VICTIMS

SOUTH Yorkshire Community Foundation has launched an emergency appeal to support those affected by the flooding across South Yorkshire. Thousands of people have been evacuated, with hundreds of homes flooded in the worst hit areas. Whilst the true extent of the damage of the floods is still being realised, disruption continues to schools, business, roads and public transport. Local charity, South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation (SYCF) has launched the emergency appeal to raise funding to provide urgent support to those affected by the severe flooding and continued disruption. This is the second flood appeal set up by SYCF. The last one was in 2007 in response to the devastating floods that affected the region at that time. The appeal has already achieved its target of raising £50,000 to support flood victims and a new target of £100,000 has now been set. SYCF is asking for urgent donations so they can provide financial aid to those worst affected and in need of immediate support. You can donate at https://www.justgiving.com/ campaign/syfloods. ECCLESFIELD Sheffield Wednesday fan is once again gearing up to take on an epic challenge for charity. Shay O’Grady is back with his second challenge in under a year. Nine-year-old Shay, dubbed ‘Super Shay’ by Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, walked from Bluebell Wood to Hillsborough ahead of the Steel City derby earlier this year, raising ÂŁ10,000 for the hospice, with

a fantastic boost from Sheffield Wednesday FC chairman, Dejphon Chansiri. Shay is currently seven weeks into the first part of his new challenge – swimming the distance from Bramall Lane to Hillsborough, which is 6,000 metres. February 8 2020 will see the end of his challenge, when he’ll walk from Hillsborough to Barnsley’s Town FC’s ground ahead of the South

VINTAGE CAR SHOW RAISES THOUSANDS FOR CHARITY THE Rotary Club of Wortley welcomed Lucy Rathbone from Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity to their club meeting on October 21. She was there to receive a cheque for £3,000 from the proceeds raised at the Vintage and Classic Car Rally held at Wortley Hall in July. This represents around 50% of the proceeds. The remaining funds from the event will be distributed to other local charities over the next few months. Lucy thanked the club on behalf of the charity for the donation and advised that the club has now given the charity more than £40,000 over the years from this and other events. The organisers wish to give thanks to all those who attended this and previous events.

LOCAL FOOTBALL TEAM DONATES SHIRTS A WRITER who is in Venezuela researching a book on football and life in the country has donated football shirts from a local team. Junior Fox FC donated around 30 kits to Jordan Florit who is currently working on his book, Red Wine and Arepas.

He asked for kits to be donated via his Twitter, and Junior Fox responded, with the kits going to some of the poorest areas and teams. The book asks the question, ‘Why is a country with a population of over 30 million people yet to qualify for a World Cup, especially one in the football-rich continent of South America?’

Uruguay, two-time winners of football’s biggest tournament, has a population of under four million, yet regularly reach the final stages of the competition. They’re also the most successful team in Copa América history with 15 titles. Is there any way Venezuela, a neighbour ten times as populous, can become international football’s next big thing?

‘Red Wine and Arepas: How Football is Becoming Venezuela’s Religion’ will examine and explore contemporary Venezuelan society through the lens of football, answering questions on the relationship between the sport and politics, culture, and society. Written with the cooperation of the executive president of the Venezuelan Football League, Rubén Villavi-

cencio, Red Wine and Arepas will feature exclusive interviews with players past and present, such as the 34-times capped midfielder Stalin Rivas, Copa América 2011 player Franklin Lucena, New York Red Bulls midfielder Cristian Cásseres Jr, and Manchester City player Yangel Herrera. “Every penny will be spent on our 760 Members in the local area. We are an award-winning group and do not pay staff, we are all volunteers. Santa makes sleigh announcement EACH year the elves of the Penistone Round Table get together with Santa to bring a magical sleigh to the streets of Penistone and the surrounding areas and 2019 is no different. Supported by the Penistone Ladies Circle, Penistone 41 Club, Penistone Tangent and Penistone Scouts, the Round Table will be bringing the Santa Sleigh out for 14 nights and two Christmas light switch-ons. The various events raise a significant amount of money for charity. In 2018 around £10,000 was raised for charity and was distributed to local individuals and organisations including: - Springvale Gardens to support improvements to the entrance;

- A contribution to Hoylandswaine to help acquire and install a defibrillator;

stone, Thurgoland, Cubley, Dodworth, Gilroyd and Ingbirchworth.

- Money to help a local family make their home more accessible for their child;

As is tradition, Santa will be supporting the Mayor at the Penistone Christmas Light switch on –November 30 – and Santa is working with some local friends to travel on a new mode of transport and raise money especially for Tiny Hearts Appeal – a charity close to many people.

- Woodhead Mountain Rescue to fund new radio equipment; and - Penistone Knitting Club to buy wool to help the support and clothing they provide newborns. All these donations would not be possible without the great support received from the local community. The sleigh will be launching on November 29 in Hoylandswaine and everyone is welcome to come and give it the send-off it deserves. Following this there will be visits to Silkstone, Silkstone Common, Penistone, Springvale, Oxspring, Green Moor, Millhouse Green, Thurl-

Santa will also be helping the Millhouse Green Light switch on, on December 1 and joining the fun and festivities in Dodworth on December 8. So when you hear Santa arrive in your street, whether you have kids or not, please pop out and say hello and drop a few pounds in their collection bucket and help continue the great work Penistone Round Table do in the community.

To find out more or register for this event visit: www.sheffield.ac.uk/rediscover call: 0114 222 7000 email: dlloutreach@sheffield.ac.uk For more information on any of our courses for mature students visit: www.sheffield.ac.uk/mature

The University of Sheffield offers a wide range of courses for mature students, and we welcome applicants without traditional entry qualifications.

Mackies fare well at Burley Moor

Local Sport Motor Services

Thorncliffe Garage Thorncliffe Lane, Chapeltown • Established 1984

FOR ALL GENERAL REPAIRS MOT TESTING SERVICING FATHER and son Penistone runners Richard and Hugh Mackie tackled the Burley Moor fell race, an 11 kilometre race which runs over steep and uneven footpaths in the Yorkshire Dales. The course goes from Scalebor Park up to the high point of Burley Moor near the Great Skirtful of Stones and then returns to Scalebor. The race now in its 10th year involves over 800 feet of climbing. Hugh was first Mackie back, managing to

get in the top 20 in 18th place in a time of 49-55. Dad Richard was also well placed in 44th place in a time of 55-20.

185 runners took part so the Mackies certainly performed well on the fells. Not too far away from Burley Moor, Penistone runner Bryan Harrod took part in the Post Hill five kilometre trail race which takes in the infamous Post Hill twice. Bryan worked his way through the field to finish in a creditable time of 25-28.

A LATE strike from Danny Howes rescued a point for Penistone Church as they drew 1-1 at AFC Mansfield on Saturday.

• Automated gate entry.

• Fenced level hardstanding with lighting.

Ross Duggan gave Mansfield the lead but captain Howes put his chance away on 88 minutes to level the scores. Church manager Ian Richards summed up after the game, “Danny Howes has got himself two goals in two games by being in the right place at the right time and credit to him as captain for doing that. “We’ll take the positives from it - there was two or three good individual performances on a tough surface in tough conditions and we’ve fought back to get a point which continues our undefeated run in the league.”

STEELS FIGHT BACK FOR A POINT Stocksbridge Park Steels 2 Worksop Town 2

STOCKSBRIDGE returned to the Look Local Stadium for a league game for the first time since mid September. However, the game against Worksop Town got off to the worst start possible, falling a goal behind straight from the kick off when a cross from the left was allowed to travel to the back post for the unmarked forward to gratefully convert. The goal rocked Steels and it took them a while to get into the game, but the half finally settled down and they started to put a few passes together without really threatening former Steels keeper Reay in the away goal. The start of the second half was much better for Steels and they started to test the away defence. Josh Nodder equalised for Steels when his dangerous ball into the box went

in off the far post. By now the game could have gone either way, with both sides going close. But when Worksop regained the lead on 81 minutes, it looked like Steels might miss out on any points. But this season, Steels have got stronger as the games have gone on and their never say die attitude kicked in. They were rewarded for their pressure when Reece Fielding converted a corner in the last minute to gain a point. Overall a fair result and the draw keeps Steels in touch with the clubs in the top three. On Saturday they travel to take on second placed Ilkeston, followed the week after with a home game against top club Carlton FC. The winner of Steels 500 draw for October was Mr C. Lowry.
