RESIDENT GROUP UNHAPPY WITH PROPOSED TRAFFIC CHANGES

PROPOSALS have been made to close Bridge Hill to cars in Oughtibridge, using a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO).

There is an ongoing injury accident problem involving people using motorcycles and bicycles on Orchard Street being hit by people driving out of Bridge Hill into Station Lane without giving way. Sheffield City Council held an informal consultation with Oughtibridge residents in March 2019 about our proposal to close Bridge Hill to solve this problem. Susie Pryor, Senior Transport Planner, said: “Since then we have looked at the suggestions residents and the Oughtibridge Road Safety Action Group made, considered parking and how vehicles could access Bridge Hill to make deliveries. In consultation with Local Councillors and the Cabinet Member for Transport we concluded that the only practical way to reduce accidents at the junction is to close Bridge Hill. “In summary we are now proposing to close Bridge Hill to motor vehicles at its junction with Langsett Road North, people on bicycles and walking would be able to go through the closure, put one disabled badge holder parking space on Langsett Road South outside the shops and introduce time restricted parking, double/single yellow lines and prohibition of footway parking on Bridge Hill and double yellow lines on parts of Langsett Road North.

“We are also proposing to move the 30mph speed limit on the north side of Oughtibridge 95m further back further towards Stocksbridge.”

But a campaign group set up to fight for better road safety in Oughtibridge has accused Sheffield City Council of ignoring the views of local residents as it pushes plans to re-organise traffic flow in the village. The Oughtibridge Road Safety Action Group (ORSAG) claims officers and local councillors have decided not to take on board the results of two consultations in the village – one of them done by Sheffield CC itself – both of which produced a firm thumbs-down to the council’s traffic plan, which would see the closure of Bridge Hill to through traffic but leave the bottom of Bridge Hill open to two-way traffic. ORSAG believes this is not properly addressing the issue of accidents at the scene.

were revealed. He then claimed the views of residents were his top priority, saying: “I will not sign-off a traffic regulation order against the wishes of residents.” ORSAG say they want to hold him to this. As part of the legal process associated with a TRO you are invited to make comment or object to this proposal. These must be submitted in writing, details given below, with a deadline for responses of December 14 2019. Any requests for clarification or further information should also be made in by e-mailing traffic.regs@sheffield.gov.uk or writing to Tom Finnegan-Smith, Head of Strategic Transport, Sustainability and Infrastructure, City Growth Department, Howden House, 1 Union Street, Sheffield, S1 2SH.

The council admits that earlier this year it asked local residents for their views on what it could do to make the roads in Oughtibridge safer but says this was “informal”. It now states that its plan has been given the go-ahead not following consultation with residents and their action group but with local councillors and the city council’s cabinet member for transport, Cllr Bob Johnson. Now ORSAG is appealing to Cllr Johnson to stand by what he said when plans for a TRO in his own ward of Hillsborough

SERVICES ASSEMBLE FOR LANGSETT RESCUE WO ODH E A D Mountain Rescue Team were called out at 5pm on Saturday November 9 to an area above Little Don River, Langsett.

Also in attendance at the incident were South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, Yorkshire Ambulance Service and South Yorkshire Police.

A father, son and their dog were returning after a walk and found themselves getting into difficulty on some fairly steep ground.

A spokesperson for Team said: “A special thank you also to Neil the gamekeeper who was on scene and was able to help and reassure the casualties.

The casualties were unable to make any progress in any direction, and by now, darkness had set in and the decision was made to call for help. Team members quickly located the father and son and with a little reassurance and support, they were walked out of their uncomfortable situation to safety. Other than a little shook up and cold, both father, son and their four legged friend were fine.

“A good result in what was quickly turning into a very cold and wet night.” Atlas Court dispatchers successfully used the location technology What3Words to pinpoint their exact location, deploying officers and Woodhead Mountain Rescue. Earlier this year all Atlas Court staff were trained to use the location technology What3Words, which provides our staff with an extra tool to locate those in need of emergency assistance.

Trio jailed for Fox Hill shooting

Pictured L-R: Benjamin Zvekare, Henry Besong, Yakeef Murphy

THREE men are now serving over 30 years behind bars for their part in a shooting, which left a man requiring reconstructive surgery. Just after 11pm on Tuesday February 26, Benjamin Zvekare, Henry Besong, and Yakeef Murphy, all 21, travelled to Fox Hill Road, Sheffield, with a view to executing a planned, targeted attack against a man at his home address. The victim, a 54-year-old man, was at home with his partner at the time, when he answered the door to Zvekare and Besong. Besong was carrying a sawn-off shotgun, which had he been hiding in his clothing. He pointed the gun at the victim,

firing toward him at close range, leaving him with a shotgun wound to his right arm. The two men then fled, leaving in a car parked nearby, with Murphy as the driver. The victim was taken to hospital where he underwent reconstructive surgery and it still remains unclear as to where he will ever regain full use of his arm. An investigation was immediately launched, which ultimately led to the three suspects being identified and a firearm and large quantities of drugs being removed from the streets of Sheffield.

Detective Inspector Lee Nesbeth, investigating, said: “Within just two days we had identified the three men as suspects and put plans in place to arrest them. “On Friday March 1, firearms officers executed a warrant at a house in the Broom area of Rotherham, in connection to the incident, and where we believed the three offenders would be. “Zvekare, Besong and Murphy were all arrested after they tried to flee the premises. A search of the house saw officers recover a bloodied sawn-off shotgun, ammunition and a quanitiy of Class A and B drugs valued at over £35,000.”

The three men appeared before Sheffield Crown Court on Friday 8 November where pleaded guilty to the following offences, and jailed. Besong, of Cromarty Close, Sinfin, Derby, was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment for possession of a firearm and causing grevious bodily harm. Zvekare, of St John’s Road, Edlington, Doncaster, was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for possession with intent to supply cocaine, heroin and cannabis. Murphy, of Cockayne Street, Derby, was sentenced to 6 years for posses-

sion of a firearm and possession with intent to supply cannabis. DI Nesbeth added: “I personally welcome the custodial sentence given to all three offenders by the judge and I hope that through this result, local communities can be rest assured that South Yorkshire Police will relentlessly pursue those criminals who arm themselves to commit offences. “The investigation also resulted in a firearm and ammunition, as well as a large quantity of Class A drugs being taken off the streets, a hugely positive outcome for the investigative team and the public of Sheffield.”

DIG UNCOVERS VILLAGE’S HIDDEN HERITAGE AN archaeological dig at Elsecar this summer has uncovered a forgotten and major part of the Elsecar New Colliery and its Newcomen Engine, the world’s oldest surviving steam engine in its original location.

The globally significant engine was built by the Earl Fitzwilliam of Wentworth Woodhouse in the 1790s, to pump water out of the Elsecar New Colliery, Elsecar’s first deep coal mine. The community dig, which took place in July as part of the Festival of British Archaeology, aimed to find anything that might be left of the engine’s former power house, thought to have been demolished in the 1930s. The results are astounding.

An early Victorian boilerhouse was discovered hidden underground, and a deep stoking hole where generations of villagers shovelled coal, day and night. Forty local volunteers and 125 students from local schools worked to make the exciting discovery over two weeks, with the support of professional archaeologists from ArcHeritage and staff from Barnsley Museums. The dig was carried out as part of the Elsecar Heritage Action Zone and the Wentworth & Elsecar Great Place project. Special permission for the dig was needed from Historic England, as the Elsecar Newcomen Engine is a scheduled ancient monument.

A public event is being held at the Elsecar Heritage Centre on Thursday November 21, between 6pm and 8pm, to reveal much more about what was found during the dig, as well as showcasing new art work created during the excavation. The event is free, but tickets need to be booked in advance via Eventbrite. Lynn Dunning, Head of Barnsley Museums, said: “We’re so pleased that so many local people have been involved in these exciting new discoveries, which have transformed how we understand Elsecar’s Great Engine, not just as a feat of engineering, but also in terms of what it was like for the people who worked here.”

BIRCH BASHING VOLUNTEERING

AUTUMN on Wharncliffe Heathland Local Nature Reserve can only mean one thing – birch bashing. The next event is on Saturday November 23. Birch bashing involves cutting off young birch trees at ground level in order to maintain the open habitat required for heathland fauna and flora to flourish.

In the absence of birch bashing and the resident sheep, the reserve would soon become a woodland and rare species such as the nightjar would be lost from the area. This bash is a joint project between the Wharncliffe Heathlands Trust and Sheffield University Conservation Volunteers. The Trust will provide all the necessary tools and instruc-

tions. Would-be participants should wear stout walking boots and come prepared for cold and wet weather. Bring your own refreshments. All children and young adults under 19 must be accompanied by a parent or carer. The event starts at 11am and ends around 4pm. Meet at Lowoods Club, Station Road, Deepcar, S36 2SQ, next to the River Don bridge.

Planning application I live in Deepcar and the developers DLP have put in another planning application to build on farm land off Wood Royd Road. It’s the same developer that is trying for Hollin Busk. We have the added annoyance that a historical farm house and buildings will be knocked down to make way for a road. Also, there are bats in the barn, which will also be knocked down. Countless other wildlife will lose their habitat too. We also need as many people in the area to be aware of this as objections need to be sent in to the council before November 25. You can view and comment on the application on Sheffield City Council’s planning portal, using the reference 19/03890/out A concerned resident.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Christmas is coming

Crowds brave rain for Fox Valley Christmas light switch on THE team at Fox Valley hosted their annual Christmas lights switch on event on Thursday, with an impressive turn out for the event – despite the rainy November weather.

High winds and rain meant the planned Christmas Market and Fireworks had to be cancelled but a great line up of festive entertainment still went ahead hosted by Dearne FM’s Matt Foister in the centre’s piazza area. Graham Lindley was the first to perform with Alice B following on afterwards. Ariana Grande tribute act Hariana also performed the popular singers’ top hits during the event in the run up to the big Switch On at 6pm. The crowds gathered to see Santa and the Fox Valley competition winner Mariella Batty, aged four, switch on the lights along with the Mayor of Stocksbridge Cllr Catherine Ward and Mark Dransfield from Fox Valley’s owners, Dransfield Properties. Anna and Elsa from Disney movie Frozen also made an appearance at the event with a special meet

and greet at Zorro Lounge. There was also a visit from Children in Need mascot Pudsey Bear. After the switch on the No Identity Choir sang Christmas songs and the event was closed with the Deepcar Brass Band. Store at the centre also stayed open until 8pm – launching the latenight Christmas shopping at Fox Valley which will take place every Thursday throughout November and December. The Festive event was also sponsored by Eric Stead Motors. Fox Valley Events Manger Kayleigh Marron said: “We were delighted with the turn out for the Christmas lights switch on and so pleased that the community really came out to enjoy this very special evening with us despite the weather.” The Fox Valley team will also hosted a silent Christmas light switch on to accommodate people who struggle with large crowds and loud noises. Getting together again this Christmas DO you know someone who will be eating Christmas dinner alone? Perhaps it’s you? In Stocksbridge you do not have to.

Following the success of last year’s event, some of the volunteers at The Meeting Place at Christ Church are planning a gathering once again for local people in the valley who are otherwise going to be alone on Christmas Day. There is already such an event in town for older people, so this event is aimed particularly at people of any age including lone parents and their children. The event will be held on Christmas Day between 11.30am and 4pm in the hall behind Christ Church on Manchester Road, Stocksbridge. Guests will get to sit together and share a full turkey dinner (with vegetarian option) and dessert, be provided with snacks and drinks (non-alcoholic) throughout the day and can participate in the games and activities being organised if they choose to. A spokesperson told Look Local: “We appreciate there

STOCKSBRIDGE KEEP CLEAN SHEET DESPITE MUDDY CONDITIONS

STOCKSBRIDGE rugby travelled to Hessle at the weekend, beating them 17-0 on the road. The lads worked hard and played well in what were very tough weather conditions. Stocksbridge kept the ball alive and didn’t let the heavy Hessle pack have much room to

play. Great work in defence and the attacking structure seems to be coming along nicely. Adam Frith and Ricky Rowett scored the tries and man of the match went to Sam Whitaker, sponsored by S&M Pipework. Next week, Stocksbridge hosts Sheffield Oaks at home with a 2.15pm kick off.

Cross country success

Local Sport DESPITE the possible threat of cancellation the third South Yorkshire cross country meeting went ahead on an adjusted course at Kiveton Park on Sunday. Flooding during the week in the park had meant that organisers had to re-route the course to avoid flooded sections. Despite some extremely tough and muddy conditions Penistone had an excellent turnout of 23 runners covering both seniors and juniors. Graihagh Turner had an excellent run in the under 11 girls race to

finish in second place in a time of 6-56. Anya Holy and Onnee Turner both put in strong performances in the same race. Flynn Rogers placed 10th in the boys under 11 race in a time of 7-53. In the ladies senior race Becky Timms was the first last lady back for Penistone in 20th place in a time of 34-30. Hugh Mackie and James Fryers both had strong runs to be both in the top 10 in the Under 17 men’s race. In a high quality men’s field Penistone runner Scott Hinchcliffe

CHURCH WIN AND ANNOUNCE NEW SIGNING

PENISTONE Church saw their game away to Barton Town postponed on Saturday, but still had plenty to celebrate with a 2-1 win midweek and a new signing to announce. Church welcome Cameron Rigby to the club – a 22-year-old attacker who has had previous experience at NCEL Premier Division level with Maltby and Handsworth. He is quick, direct and will excite the Church fans. On Wednesday, Church beat Hall Road Rangers 2-1 with first half goals from Kieran Ryan and Brad Kemp putting them into a 2-0 lead at the break. Although Charlie Birley pulled one back for the home side, Church saw the game out.

performed well to take fifth place. Gareth Cooke was next in for Penistone just outside the top 10 in 11th place. Rob Davies had an excellent run at the Tadcaster 10 mile race and placed second in his age category (over-55 man) with a time of 67-31. Running the same distance at Preston David Napier gained a personal best time of 70-18. Four Penistone runners ventured to Chesterfield to take part in the Wingerworth Hobble. Due to the muddy conditions competitors

were hosed down before being allowed back into race HQ! Junior runner John Halstead was first back for Penistone in a superb sixth place. Other Penistone finishers were Jill Carlton, Rachael Mayston and Sarah Halstead. Hannah Butcher took part in the Blackburn 10k and completed the course in 44-33. On the fells Steve Sanders competed in the Wadsworth Half Trog, a fifteen kilometre fell race. Steve finished in a creditable 30th place in a time of 1-34-06. Elsewhere on the fells two Penistone runners, Ju-

lie Darigala and Brent Lindsay had a weekend of fell running in the Lake District. On Saturday they competed in the Two Riggs fell race near Keswick which was 5.6 miles long with 984 feet of ascent. Julie finished in 58th place in a time of 52-51 and claimed first over-50 lady and set a new course record for her age category. Brent was in 154th place in 01-0914. On Sunday they raced Arnside Knott fell race which was 6.2 miles long with 1,083 feet of ascent. Julie came in 31st place and second lady in 46-52 and Brent was 119th in a time of 1-01-13.

KYLE HOWARTH FOLLOWS SPEEDWAY TIGERS TO PREMIERSHIP KYLE Howarth is the first name on Sheffield’s Tigers’ Premiership speedway team sheet for next season. Howarth, 25, has agreed a deal to go up with the Owlerton side following their promotion which was confirmed at the sport’s AGM last week. Boss Simon Stead is pleased to keep some continuity in the camp with a host of new signings set to be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Tigers boss Simon Stead said: “Keeping Kyle at the club is the logical thing to do and it gives us some continuity. “There will be a lot of new faces in the team so it’s nice for us to keep Kyle. “He’s got plenty of experience at this level and he can do a good job for the team. We are pleased he’s staying with us and I’m sure the fans will be. “Hopefully he can be injury free throughout the season and play his part in a successful season.”

CoCn sTitV e ILKESTON TOWN 2-5 STOCKSBRIDGE PARK STEELS STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels travelled to Ilkeston Town, who sat in third place and four points above Steels who were in sixth. However, Stocksbridge didn’t show any sign of nerves as they attacked their opponents from the start. Scott Ruthven opened the scoring with a well-placed header from a superb cross by Luke Mangham and the second came along not long after when a Josh Nodder strike from the edge of the box was allowed to drop in the goal by the keeper – Nodder’s second goal in as many weeks.

Good pressure from the Steels midfield allowed Ruthven to rob the ball on the edge of the box and his quick feet created enough space to curl the ball into the corner of the goal for his second. By now Ilkeston were reeling and Steels were playing some excellent football, getting the ball into wide areas and causing problems with their crosses into the box. Whitham missed a good chance to make it four after good work from Mangham but it wasn’t long before they extended their lead even further. Ruthven completed his hat-trick and they went in at half time 4-0 up.

Although Ilkeston showed much more passion second half, Steels made it five with a fine passing move from their own half which was converted by hotshot Ruthven. Even with a big lead, Ed Hall in the Steels goal still had to be at his best to produce three very good saves to maintain the gap. Ilkeston scored two late goals to make it respectable but Steels never looked in danger of losing the points. The win makes this Saturday’s game a cracker with top of the table Carlton FC coming to the Look Local Stadium with only three points separating the teams.
