Mackie crowned South Yorkshire Schools Cross champ

FIVE juniors from Penistone Footpath Runners represented Barnsley at the South Yorkshire schools cross country championship at a very windy Campsall near Doncaster.

Hugh Mackie claimed first place in the Year 10 and 11 Boys race and in the process gained selection to represent South Yorkshire in the English Schools cross country championships. A great achievement by Hugh.

In the same race, James Fryers placed 19th. Other runners competing were Rosie Sparks (32nd Year Seven girls), Oliver France and Ewan Mackie (20th and 21st Year Eight/Nine boys).

A large contingent of Penistone Footpath Runners made the short journey to Dewsbury to take part in the Dewsbury 10k which is a fast course and ideal for those looking for a personal best.

First back for the club out of a field of 2,000 was Gary Briscoe (33-00) in 14th place. Gary came in neck and neck with clubmate Gareth Cooke (33-00) who actually achieved the same time as Gary.

First lady back for Penistone was Sam Shaw (39-04) who broke the 40-minute barrier for the first time. Sam was 19th lady overall. Three Penistone runners managed to claim top three places in their respective age groups.

Julia Johnson (43-11) was second in the ladies over-55 category and Matt Robinson (36-51) was also second in the over-50 men’s category. Andrew Pearson (36-05) broke his own club record and also claimed third place in a very competitive over-55 men’s category.

On the fells Penistone was well represented at the tough Mickledon Straddle fell race which is a 14.5 mile race that starts at Langsett and

heads out towards Howden reservoir before turning back via the tough Howden Clough climb.

Two Penistone runners, Becky Timms (over-40 lady) and Daren Nockels (over-50 man) claimed first place in their respective age categories. Lesley Parker also claimed a top three finish in her age group placing second in the over-40 ladies.
