The results have now been released from the surveys from the public, businesses and taxi drivers.

The public also believe that better public transport, more walking and cycling routes are the best ways to clean air. However, local small businesses are concerned about the

Taxi drivers are also revealed their unease with 95% likely having to upgrade their vehicles to avoid paying the proposed pollution charge. Councillor Bob Johnson, Cabinet Member for Transport and Sustainability said: “The survey results show that people want to see action taken – but if we’re going to be successful in reducing pollution we need to help taxi drivers and local small businesses move to cleaner vehicles. It’s vital that we get investment from Central Government to assist local businesses

and taxis to upgrade their fleets.

the fastest possible a vehicle than outside. time.

“The survey results show that the zone is not the only way to reduce pollution. It is essential that we look to improve public transport, especially bus journeys. We also need to change our streets to promote walking and cycling. Such changes will take time but our recent Transforming Cities bid is a major step in securing funding to deliver the infrastructure Sheffield needs to enable people to travel in a safe, healthy and sustainable way.”

Greg Fell, Director of Public Health for Sheffield said: “On days of poor air pollution, we see more people having asthma attacks, heart attacks and strokes. Poor air quality is being linked with other diseases, including dementia - it’s something we can’t ignore.”

Sheffield and Rotherham Council have been jointly mandated by Central Government’s Joint Air Quality Unit (JAQU) to reduce Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) in

The consultation shows that people believe that the solution is cleaner vehicles and better alternatives than cars, including public transport, walking and cycling. These bring benefits of not only reduced emissions, but extra physical activity and reduced exposure to air pollution –which is often worse inside

CRACKING EASTER FUND-RAISER

TEAM Safer Roads South Yorkshire is encouraging people from across the county to join them for this year’s official Easter Egg Run which promises to be a ‘cracking’ event. Hosted and organised by Sheffield’s Children’s Hospital and Charity, the Egg Run will take place on Sunday April 12 (Easter Sunday) and will be led by two-time World Superbike Champion James Toseland. Members of the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partner-

ship (SYSRP) will host an information stall at the event as well as handing out powered-two-wheeler (P2W) resources in return for a small charity donation. Joanne Wehrle, manager of SYSRP, said: “This is such an important cause and we are proud to be a part of it on the day. “Our team will be on hand to chat about all things road safety as well as giving out useful resources including neck warmers, vests, zip-

pulls, rucksack covers, visor wipes and reflective stickers. “We hope you will join us on the day and help us to raise much-needed funds for a local cause close to all our hearts.” To join the Egg Run Facebook group and be the first to hear about Egg Run events please visit: www.facebook.com/ groups/192543874461582/ You can also donate to the cause via www.justgiving. com/fundraising/theos-eggrun
