MONICA PUTS HER BEST FOOT FORWARD CHAPELTOWN grandma Monica Sharp knows that striding out is the simplest way to keep fit and support the charity that helped her grandson in his darkest hour.

She has walked a total of 100 miles in just one month and raised a fantastic £370 for South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout. Many of her walks - often accompanied by friend Angela Tod - were in the Lodge Moor and Stanage Edge. And she completed her tough four-week challenge with a 17-mile trek around Derbyshire’s Derwent, Howden and Ladybower reservoirs, knowing that every step would help Roundabout to continue its programme of services for young people like her grandson George.

“George had a really tough time when he was younger and I doubt he would have made it without the support of Roundabout,” Monica says. “He was in a really bad place but Roundabout got involved and I have always said they saved his life. “They supported him, they found accommodation for him and gave him some skills at a time when he was struggling and couldn’t engage with his family. “Roundabout help people who are just in the wrong place at the wrong time and that’s why I wanted to do something for them because this year, more than ever before, charities like this need our support.” To find out more about Roundabout and its work with young people in South Yorkshire simply visit roundabouthomeless.org

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe and daughter Alice show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities as their father. They are now helping the successful window company build on the 43 years of trading.

SHEFFIELD VOTES FOR CHANGE CONSERVATIVES WIN IN PENISTONE & STOCKSBRIDGE

Here’s a brief summary of results from north Sheffield wards 2021;

The Conservative Party won the Stocksbridge & Upper Don Ward to make Lewis Chinchen the first Conservative elected to Sheffield City Council in a generation. Lewis said: "I am delighted to be elected as Councillor for Stocksbridge and Upper Don and thank everyone who voted for me. I spoke to hundreds of residents during the campaign about the local issues which were important to them and I look forward to being able to work on those now. I am proud of the positive campaign we ran and I will continue to work closely with residents throughout my term. However you voted, I want to be a strong voice for everyone in the ward and assist residents in any way I can"

West Ecclesfield Ward

The Conservatives also held the Penistone East ward on Barnsley Council with Cllr John Wilson, the Conservative group leader on Barnsley Council winning with a large majority. Miriam Cates MP for Penistone & Stocksbridge said: "I’m looking forward to working with Lewis and John to deliver for our communities in Penistone and Stocksbridge."

LABOUR LOSES CONTROL OF SHEFFIELD COUNCIL The Labour party lost eight seats, meaning the council now goes to no overall control. In the biggest shock, Bob Johnson leader of the Sheffield City Council, lost his Hillsborough ward to the Green Party candidate, Christine Killigan Kubo. The Green Party made significant inroads into the make-up of the council, and now holds 13 seats. In Barnsley, Labour's Nicola Sumner held the Rockingham ward BY A COIN TOSS after tying with Conservative candidate Roy Garratt.

SHEFFIELD VOTES FOR CHANGE IN REFERENDUM Sheffield City Council will also move to a committee model of decision-making after a citizen-led campaign led to 65% of voters calling for a change to the way the Council is run. The successful It’s Our City campaign, which triggered the vote after gaining over 26,000 signatures from local people, was launched after the Council’s handling of the street tree dispute raised questions about accountability and oversight. 140,186 votes were cast, and 89,670 voted to switch to the committee model.

Glowing praise for Belmont

Barnsley crossbow incident: Man, 31, arrested Police officers used shields to protect members of the public after a man was seen wielding a crossbow and threatening people in a town centre.

Staff at Belmont House Care & BelNursing Home in Stocksbridge has received high praise from the family of a resident who have been delighted with the care and support their loved one has received. Ninety-fouryear-old Millicent Darnill has been a resident at Belmont House for two years. Jim explains; “Before the lockdown I spent a lot of time in Belmont with my mother, playing cards and dominoes, singing along with the entertainers, sitting in on the chairobics exercises and encouraging my mother and the others to join in, and even sometimes leading the hymn singing when the vicar from Bolsterstone church visited to hold a service. I'd often take my guitar and sing a couple of songs for everybody to sing along with, and I've played at some of the fairs that have been put on, and dragged other musicians in to join me, all free of charge. So, I soon got to know everybody, staff and residents, and honestly, I think the care that your staff provide really is first rate!

Armed officers were sent to Peel Street in Barnsley at about 01:30 BST on Sunday, South Yorkshire Police said. A 31-year-old man from the town was subsequently arrested on suspicion of public order affray and he remains in custody, the force said. Supt Paul McCurry said it was a "serious and distressing incident". "Unarmed officers on routine public order duty approached the man using their shields to protect members of the public," he said.

"Their actions resulted in the man dropping the weapon, which was safely recovered."

New leadership for Sheffield Labour

The man then ran from officers, climbing onto the bridge on West Way, Supt McCurry said. "Due to the skills of officers at the scene, he was swiftly detained and brought to safety." Officers responded "very quickly with limited protection to safely resolve the incident", he added. No-one was injured during the incident, according to South Yorkshire Police. Anyone with footage of the incident or with information which could help police is being asked to get in touch with the South Yorkshire force.

The Steel Valley Project, a Stocksbridge based environmental charity, has launched its Keep Stocksbridge Tidy project, working with the local community and landowners to improve green spaces, removing litter and fly tipping in the Stocksbridge area. Developed in response to an increase in the number of people using green spaces as a result of the Covid-19 restrictions, the project will involve volunteers in helping to tidy up parks, woodlands and other outdoor places to make them safe and attractive for people and wildlife. The project has been made possible with funding from National Lottery players through the Community Fund and the Joseph Sheldon Trust. Tom Newman, Steel Valley Project General Manager said “The Covid-19 restrictions have brought huge changes to how green spaces are used and it’s great to see more people enjoying the outdoors. Unfortunately, this has also brought increased anti-social behaviour and

water is also an invaluable life skill. With access to facilities limited due to the pandemic, we expect that there will be some regression amongst children’s swimming ability. “With summer upon us, I fear for children’s safety in the water and would strongly recommend parents and guardians to be proactive in making up for the lost time. “I hope that through regular swimming lessons and more pool time, we will be able to avoid ‘a lost generation’ of children and young people who cannot swim and keep themselves safe in the water.” Leon Taylor, Olympic medallist and dad to tenmonth old Ziggy, is keen to start Ziggy’s water journey soon. “Swimming has become such a huge part of my life again in recent years and I swim in the sea almost everyday – even in the winter,” said Leon, who won a silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games in the 10m Synchro alongside Peter Waterfield. “However, the last year has meant that Ziggy (born June 2020) has never even been to swimming pool so his only water-based experiences are in the bath. “We can't wait to start him in swimming lessons to teach him such a vital life skill." One parent, Amy McCarthy, a mum of two from Littlehampton, was confident her two children aged five and seven would be able to make up for lost time now indoor pools had reopened. She said: “We absolutely love going swimming as a family and think it’s so important that the children are able to swim and have fun in the water. “The last year has brought about so many challenges, including trying to keep the kids active and moving. “It has been wonderful seeing them back in their swimming lessons. I have definitely noticed both my son and daughter’s swimming ability has deteriorated but I’m confident that we’ll be able to make up for lost time.” Find swimming lessons near you at swimming. org/loveswimming.

After 17 May, only paper questionnaires will be available. Organisations If people refuse to take part, they could be taken to court and issued with a £1,000 fine and criminal record. The census non-compliance operation will begin on May 25.

Extensive community engagement is continuing to make sure all groups of the population are represented in the census. Students, for example, need to make sure they have completed a questionnaire for their term-time address to help get the services they need in their university town now and in the future. Students should complete a form even if they were included on their family form at home.

Community Fund grants aim to help voluntary, community and self-help groups who want to make a difference in their neighbourhood. Previously successful bids include a community tool bank, greenhouse project, People with second addresses also need to fill out street art, gardening clubs, a short form for their properties whether it is a art classes, chairobic sessions caravan, holiday home or commuter flat. and wildlife schemes. From May 4, a sample of households will receive a card through the post asking them to take part in the CCS. After that, an interviewer, following the government’s COVID-19 guidelines, will visit the address and fill in the questionnaire with you on your doorstep. The interviewer will be able to show an ID badge on a Census 2021 branded lanyard.

that work with council tenants can now apply for a pot of money to get their community projects off the ground.

Organisations that work with council tenants or in and around council housing estates in Sheffield can apply for the grant, with funding available for each ward. Janet Sharpe, Director of Housing and Neighbourhood Services said: “Some really exciting and innovative projects have come out of the Community Fund in previous years and I don’t think this year will be any different.

“Over the last 12 months people have had to put their plans on hold so we’re hoping this is a great opportunity for many organisations to jump start their future projects and bring people together again.” The deadline for this round of funding is Sunday 27th June 2021.

Spring into Summer May is a great gardening month and probably the last month you can plan for your summer colour in the garden. For those with limited space, bedding plants will give you maximum effect and can really make a statement. If you are taking a long-term view then a garden full of reliable flowering shrubs is also an option Whatever garden you have, watering and weeding are the key watchwords for May. It’s essential to water newly planted fruit trees, roses and shrubs regularly to help their root systems get established. It’s also the time of year when many plants’ demand for water increases as they start their major growth period. Top watering tips include – every time you plant something water it in well, make a moat of soil round newly planted plants so that water doesn’t run off and goes to the roots, water pots and containers so that water appears right to the top of the pot and get a water butt. If you have a drainpipe you have a natural water supply so a simple garden solution for May is to ensure that you have adequate water storage. If you buy and fit a water butt it will provide you with water for the garden in an environmentally friendly way and on a regular basis. Annual weeds will be popping up now, so weeding borders once a week to pre-

Keeping on top of garden maintenance is crucial in May. The garden is coming alive so there is plenty to keep you busy. Here are some jobs you should be thinking about this month from the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society)... • Plant out seedlings and young plants • Watering and weeding • Start spraying roses to stop black spot and mildew vent weed seedlings establishing is a good idea. The problem with the most common weeds such as nettles, dandelions and bindweed is that they are very, very tough. They can continue to grow in conditions that make most garden plants simply fade away – and they do that, in part, by using the moisture, nutrients and light of the plants around them. A great plant to get you into the summer gardening spirit is the pretty Petunia.– perfect for containers and hanging baskets and a great choice for instant

colour. It can flower all summer long, providing you deadhead regularly, and comes in a variety of colours to suit any garden palette. Petunias are also available in different blooms including single, double, ruffled or smooth petals. They can be striped, veined or solid in colour and most sold today are hybrids developed for specific design purposes such as fragrance. They need full sun and can’t tolerate frost but can grow in a wide range of soils and thrive in multipurpose compost when planted in containers.

Wellbeing Corner By Ged Jenkins-Omar, Best Selling Author of ‘Help with Anxiety’ and ‘An Anxiety Book for Teens’ available on Amazon.

Hello! I hope you are well. This week we celebrate that great news that from May 17th restrictions will be relaxed even further. This is music to all our ears and sees another step in the right direction. This week is also important as it is Mental Health Awareness Week. With 1 in 4 people suffering from mental health problems every year (and likely more over the last year), the purpose behind this week is to get everyone talking about mental health and further breaking down any stigmas attached to it. For this Mental Health Awareness Week I thought I would go over my top five tips for managing your mental health. Top of the pops at number 1 is to talk about your feelings and thoughts. Talking plays a key role in helping to improve and manage your mental health. Talk to your family, friends, colleagues or anyone else you trust. Not only will it be a relief to get it off your chest but the people you speak to will be able to support you. Re-

member, a problem shared can often be a problem halved. That brings me on to number 2 - seek help. If you are struggling with your mental health then seek professional help and support. This could be through your doctor, a counsellor, an organisation like Mind, The Samaritans, YoungMinds or something similar. These people and organisations will be able to help you in your hour of need and support you moving forward. Moving on to number 3 we have exercise. Exercise can play a significant role in helping to regulate your mental health and what’s more it can be totally free. So, whether you like running, walking, swimming, going to the gym or something else, make sure to exercise regularly. Exercise produces endorphins in the body that act as a natural pain killer, stimulating anti-anxiety effects and improving our ability to sleep. It can also help to boost your self-esteem and confidence. The role exercise plays in having positive mental health should not be underestimated. At number 4 we have food and drink. As the old saying goes, you are what you eat and the same goes

for your mental health. Eating healthy grains, fruits and vegetables will all help to boost your wellbeing, while eating processed and sugary foods can result in you feeling more anxious or depressed. Furthermore, fizzy drinks with sugar in and alcohol should be avoided or limited if you are prone to suffering with poor mental health. Finally at number 5 we have - be kind. Be kind to yourself and go easy on yourself. Understand you are going to have bad days, but you are also going to have good days too. Understand that it is okay not to be okay and that help, and support is out there. Similarly, remember to be kind to others as you might not know what they are going through in their life. As Christopher Robin said to Winnie-the-Pooh, “You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” Please note: This article is for educational purposes only and should not replace proper medical advice. If you are experiencing anxiety or any other mental health illness, then please speak to your doctor.

boost for grassroots football Stocksbridge Park Steels is proud to be one of ten grassroots clubs supporting Papa John’s UK with their #getonthepitch campaign, a £100k fund for community clubs in the UK.

improvements to their local club. From goalposts that need replacing to clubhouses that require a lick of paint, Papa John’s community fund is looking to lend a hand to nearly 12 million people in the UK that are involved in the grassroots football game.

As Papa John’s launches its sixfigure community fund to support grassroots football, a group of clubs and coaches have come together to highlight the important role of grassroots clubs within the football pyramid.

Stocksbridge PS, where Jamie Vardy spent six and a half years before becoming the first NonLeague player to be transferred for over £1 million, are joined by 2 other locally based clubs. Penistone Church and Handsworth Boys , where England internationals, John Stones played briefly as a young boy and Dominic Calvert-Lewin played for as a youngster, respectively.

The Papa John’s ‘Get on the Pitch’ fund, fronted by ex-Premier League footballer and TV personality Jimmy Bullard, will see local clubs all over the UK able to apply online for a chunk of the £100k on offer to make

Speedway star gearing up for comeback

Former British Under-21 Champion Bates has moved back to his local club Sheffield for their first season back in the top flight and will double-up with reigning champions Leicester in the Second Division. Apart from one appearance in the British Final last October, Bates hasn’t raced competitively since July

2019 when his season ended with a crash riding for Peterborough.

But he’s back and feeling fit ahead of his return with several practice sessions planned. He said: “I’m really excited about it, I have missed it so badly, it’s like riding speedway is in my blood.

“On the first day back on a bike at Leicester I had excited butterflies all day leading up to it but after my first lap or two it felt like I’d never been off the bike.

“It’s great to be back and I’m confident of doing a job for my clubs. I personally feel this is a big season for me but I’m not going to put myself under any pressure, I’m going out there to enjoy it.”

And Bates insists he’s banished any thoughts of quitting the sport. “I’ve had those thoughts when I’ve been injured but not a chance now,” he said. “I’ve had some bad moments dealing with injury, but my mind is clear and I feel a lot more mature and I know the time away from the sport last year made me realise just how much I miss it.

“I’ll keep working hard in preparation and see what I can do in the season. Everyone knows I’ll be giving it my all as I always have done. “I want to thank everyone who has continued to support me during the tough times, family members, friends, sponsors, fans, it means a lot and I can’t wait to see fans back trackside.”

Golf Club League teams get off to a flying start

With the summer season in full flow Stocksbridge Golf Club League team began their competitive season and with a clear aim of seeking promotion from Division 5. The 2018 and 2019 seasons were difficult times for the team with two successive relegations. There was no opportunity in 2020 to bounce back, with the League season being scrapped because of the pandemic.

On a chilly evening on the 5 May the team began its campaign against Lees Hall GC and won the first round convincingly by 6 points to 2. The format is match play with 4 players per team, two points for a win, one for a half and none for a loss. Team Captain Liam O'Sullivan (2) selected himself, Danny Costello (3) and the Finney brothers

Andrew (1) and Peter (3). Peter was the only one to lose his match, 5 and 4, but the other three all won convincingly - Liam and Danny both by 3 and 2. But it was Andrew, continuing an excellent season of form who won by the handsome margin of 7 and 5.

Liam was delighted with the win and was full of praise for the greens staff at the club setting the course up for a real challenge. Liam said: "the greens in particular were unreal, playing lightning fast." The next match for the team is at home to Tinsley Park on the 19 May. The Dragons Society of the Club began their League season as well on the 5 May, playing away at Silkstone. For this League each team fields six pairs and the format is a better ball stableford. Each team

then adds up their cumulative stableford score to determine the overall result. The Stocksbridge pairings all scored highly in their matches Dave Stringer and Kab Meegan (47 points); Ian Batty and Pete Hodkin (46 points); Martyn Bradwell and Dave Broadhurst (34 points); Les Wright and John Moss (39 points): Mick Siddall and Noel Weaver (42 points); and Sandy Murphy and Mick Mosforth (42 points), giving an aggregate score of 250 points. Every pairing won their individual matches and in total Silkstone were a distant 32 points behind, a thumping victory for the Stocksbridge Dragons. Their next match is away to Hillsborough on the 4 June. On the very same day the remaining Dragons Section competed at the Club in the latest round of the

Dragons Summer Cup. John Sawdon (21) won this round with 34 points. Bill Boucher (29) was second with 33 points, pipping Alf Pearson (26) into third place with 31 points.

The Gents Section competed for the May Monthly Midweek Medal on 6 May with Shaun Stapleton (16) the overall winner with a net 66. Andrew Finney (1), fresh from the success of the League Team a day earlier, was second with a net 67 and the overall lowest gross score of 68. Andrew's round included an amazing three consecutive birdies from the third hole. Joe Sedgwick (7) was third overall with a net 68. The Ladies Section competed for the Front Nine on the 7 May and Kath Busfield (13) won with a modest 11 points. Margaret Pearson (14) was

second with 9 points, beating Sue Clegg (24) into third place with the same score, but winning on countback.

Saturday 8 May should have seen the Gents section competing for the May Medal, but the horrendous rain that fell all day resulted in the competition being cancelled and reset for later in the month. On Sunday 9 may, the Ladies Section played for the Ping Qualifier, a pairs better ball stableford competition. Hilja and Liana O'Sullivan triumphed convincingly with 45 points. Bev Sykes and Ann Whitfield were a distant second with 36 points. Margaret Pearson and Sue Hill were third with 34 points.

Kenyon hat-trick inspires win

Chapeltown RBL 3-1 FC Inter Chapeltown RBL made it 3 wins from 3 for new boss Adam Todd with a 3-1 victory against Division One side FC Inter, following an impeccably observed minutes silence in memory of Mick Forbes, the founder of Shakey FC. After an even start to the game it was Legion who struck first after great work down the right hand side by speedster Joe Moorehouse, whose pinpoint cross was met by the head of Curtis Dennison. The lead was doubled 5 minutes later with a wonderful team goal starting from a goal kick as the ball was passed out from goalkeeper Mark Newbould. After patient build up Moorehouse again found Dennison, who laid off to the in form Mitch Savage to score his 5th goal in 3 games, this time with his left foot. RBL were quick out of the blocks in the second half and Joe Moorehouse dispossessed the Inter goalkeeper before firing in to an empty goal.

In the end of season East Midlands Regional League Cup Oughtibridge progressed to the quarter finals with a comfortable win at home to Leicester. Laura Cain (pictured) buried a header in the 1st minute quickly followed by Millie Kenyon making it 2-0. Youngster Emily Fowler netted again and Kenyon completed her hat-trick by half time. Leicester re grouped at the interval to make a real fight of it in the 2nd half although the hosts did miss plenty of chances to add to their tally.

Inter were given a lifeline after Tom Duty was The final 30 minutes became a battle which deemed to have nudged his striker, and the re- RBL stood up well to and kept out an avasulting penalty was dispatched by Sam Read. lanche of attacks from their opponents.
