WOMAN ARRESTED FOR DRUG OFFENCES AFTER POLICE CHASE Community information helps put the local police team in the right direction, report SHEFFIELD NORTH WEST NPT On Thursday 18th June, at 4pm, the pictured BMW was spotted by officers from Deepcar Police Station. In previous days duties the officers at the local neighbourhood team had been told that the occupant of the car may be dealing drugs. After attempting to stop the car on Manchester Road, Stocksbridge, the driver of the BMW failed to stop but following a short pursuit it was caused to stop on Carr Road, Deepcar. A search of the car located several bags (pictured) suspected to be a Class A drug, and money was also seized.

HOPES FOR LIFTING LOCKDOWN EARLY IN SHEFFIELD UNLIKELY SAYS HEALTH CHIEF

The city’s public health director says hopes for lifting lockdown earlier than planned in Sheffield are unlikely.

would be brought forward to July 5 or even be July 25, but that would give the city more time to get jabs in arms.

Hopes for lifting lockdown on July 5 rose as Covid jab bookings topped 1 million in two days.

He added: "It is the Prime Minister’s call not mine and it would be foolish of me to advise him although it would make lots of people very happy.

But Greg Fell Director of Public Health Sheffield, said he thought it unlikely Freedom Day

The driver was arrested for drug and driving offences, and the car was seized due to the driver having no insurance. A search of the drivers home address located a larger quantity of a substance (pictured) suspected to be a Class A drug which had been concealed. Following questioning a female has now been released from custody and remains under investigation.

If you know or suspect that someone is dealing or producing drugs in your community let us know. Why should they make a profit from causing pain in your community while you and your loved ones work hard to make an honest living?

UNDER-21S TRAVEL FOR LESS Zoom Beyond Travel Pass lets 18-21-year-olds travel on buses and trams all over South Yorkshire for 80p a single journey. From Monday 21 June all 18 to 21 years old can enjoy cheaper travel in South Yorkshire with a Zoom Beyond 18-21 Travel Pass. Applications are free and the pass is valid for up to a year, until 20 June 2022 or the day before the passholder’s 22nd birthday – whichever is sooner. All 18-year-olds who have a 16-18 Travel Pass which is due to expire are being sent a new Zoom Beyond pass automatically. The extension to the existing travel concession to include over-18s forms part of the Sheffield City Region Mayor Dan Jarvis’s support package to help young people as the region emerges from the Covid-19 pandemic. Dan Jarvis, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region said: “Local leaders and I took the decision to extend this concession to cover everyone aged 21 and under in South Yorkshire because while the past year has been tough on us all, it’s been particularly tough for young people. “I’ve promised to do all I can to help our young people. I hope

this helps to get everyone where they want to be, whether that’s college, work or even just to see each other after a series of lockdowns. “I also hope this will help get people back on the buses and support the system as a whole. As government support is reduced we need to make sure we get passenger numbers back up as quickly as possible so we can maintain the financial viability of the network and head off the associated traffic congestion and air pollution that comes from a dependency on cars.” Zoom Beyond is not attached to any conditions such as being in education or employment and young people can use it to go anywhere within the region. All they need to do is show the pass to the bus driver or tram conductor when paying their fare. The pass is valid on over 175 routes in South Yorkshire, on local services such as those operated by First, Stagecoach, TM Travel, Powells and Supertram. Applications can be made via travelsouthyorkshire.com/ ZoomBeyond.

Gym instructor to run 100km for charity Ultra marathon charity run A 44 Year-old gym instructor from Deepcar is, this weekend, attempting to race the castle in a 100km run from Newcastle to Bamburgh Castle, to raise money for Child Bereavement UK. Rachel Howard, 44, lost her 17 year old nephew earlier this year. She told Look Local “I lost my nephew this February, which was devastating for my Brother’s family, I saw what amazing work the bereavement charity did to help our family come to terms with this tragic event, and wanted to help anyone else who has to go through this.” Rachel, takes boxfit, pilates, zumba classes at Stocksbridge Leisure centre and 1step fitness. The married mother two, started training in April increasing her mileage to 40 plus miles a week. She’s hoping to finish with a time of 12-14 hours. She will be joined on part of her challenge by her husband and two work colleagues.

VEHICLE PARTS THEFT MOREHALL APPEAL Dash cam and witnesses sought in relation to the theft of a vehicle front bumper and grill. Deepcar Neighbourhood Team are appealing for witnesses, dashcam footage and information following the theft of a front bumper and grill from a black, VK Golf R. On Saturday 19 June, between the hours of 1145 and 1245, the vehicle was parked at More Hall Reservoir, close to the water treatment turret. When the owner returned to their vehicle the bumper and grill had been removed. No further damage was caused suggesting that tools were used to remove the parts. If you witnessed anything in relation to this incident or your dash cam picked anything up, please contact us through direct message or report through 101.

Police chase ends in arrest

Rachel is back at work on Monday, taking zumba, chairobics and boxfit classes, so if you’re are in one of her classes make sure you ‘say’ a massive well-done. If you would like to help Rachel www.justgiving. com/fundraising/rachel-howard32?

Man arrested for dangerous driving and drug possession after police chase Witnesses to a police chase in Stocksbridge are being urged to come forward. A police pursuit was mounted when a silver Ford Focus failed

to stop for officers in the Stocksbridge area on Saturday. Officers began pursuing the car at 5.37pm and followed it to Bolsterstone and into Stocksbridge. The pursuit lasted around 13 minutes.

ESSENTIAL ROADWORKS IN HILLSBOROUGH Streets Ahead will shortly begin essential road works in the Hillsborough area, resurfacing Holme Lane and Loxley New Road from Tuesday 29th June to Friday 9th July. The works will take place at night, between 7pm and midnight, when traffic and footfall are reduced. Peter Hancock, Operations Manager at Streets Ahead, says of the work, “The location of this work is not easy and being in a busy residential area such as this means that there will be some disruption. “Unfortunately, there will be some noise, especially in the early stages when we are removing the old road surface. “There will also be road closures in place but only when absolutely necessary to keep our workforce safe, and we urge all motorists to follow the diversions until our work has been completed.” Due to the one-way system and the necessary road closures on Stannington Road that

will divert traffic along Hollins Lane to Rivelin Valley Road, current bus services will be replaced by a shuttle bus enabling residents continued access whilst the work takes place. The temporary shuttle bus service, 981 and 982, will run between Hillsborough Interchange and Stannington every 30 minutes, Monday to Friday, from 29th June until the work has finished. Malin Bridge Park & Ride on Holme Lane will not be accessible during the road closures; vehicle owners should ensure they have removed their vehicle no later than 7pm each evening whilst the work takes place. SYPTE are placing notices in the car park with further information. Supertram services are not affected. Both households and businesses in the area have been notified in writing and advance notice signs have been placed on-site.

Golfers Complete 10 Round Challenge Marathon Two golfers at Stocksbridge Golf Club completed a marathon busting 10 rounds of golf in one day on Friday 18 June. Steven Haigh and Jamie South, pictured with Club Gents and Ladies Captains Alan Revill and Helen Moffett at the end of the event, completed the 180-hole challenge in just under 16 hours. They were raising money for the Captain's chosen charity, the Cardio-Thoracic Unit at the Northern General Hospital's Chesterman Wing. Alan chose this charity to fund raise for during his year of Captaincy because he underwent bypass surgery just over a decade ago. Alan has been so grateful for the care that he received that he even volunteered on the Unit for 7 years. This is not the first time the 10round challenge has been completed. Two years ago, Steven Haigh and Matt Sedgwick managed the feat to raise funds for St Luke's Hospice. Matt would have been repeating the event this time with Steven, but unfortunately his partner was diagnosed with Covid-19 four days before the start. Matt was very frustrated to have to quarantine, but Greenkeeper Jamie South willingly stood in for him at late notice. Matt has been instrumental in getting the challenge set up and getting a lot of the money donated so far from a variety of friends and family. All through

the day he was sending messages of support and encouragement.

Jamie and Steven set off at 4am and completed the challenge by 7.30 pm, running much of the course on every round. That was 2.5 hours quicker than when Matt and Steven undertook the challenge two years ago. The Captain said "if I had not witnessed it, I wouldn't have believed it. Not only did they do it, but Jamie even managed a birdie on the 180th hole." To complete the challenge the pair of them ran over 38 miles and apart from some very short refreshment breaks at the end of each round, they didn't stop for the whole challenge. That is apart from a couple of interviews for BBC Radio Sheffield, when Steven even carried on playing one handed so as not to lose any time. Both players were exhausted at the end of the 10 rounds but were extremely well supported by enthusiastic club members. Alan summed it up perfectly: "Stocksbridge is a small, friendly club and when events like this occur, the members pull together." So far, the event has raised close to £1400. If you would like to add to the sponsorship money raised so far, you can find a Just Giving Page on https://www.justgiving. com/crowdfunding/matthewsedgwick.

BASKETBALL ACADEMY TEAMS UP FORMER GB CAPTAIN Barnsley Sports Academy has teamed up with professional basketball player, Georgia Gayle, to develop its Basketball Academy. Georgia, who most recently played professionally in Spain, carries a wealth of experience after captaining the Great Britain national team, as well as studying in the USA on a basketball scholarship at The University of Central Florida and Northwest Florida State College. She will provide young basketball players with an excellent opportunity to combine education and basketball. Georgia said: “I have always aspired to become a basketball coach. Playing basketball for the majority of my life has given me so many opportunities and experiences that I realised I wanted to be able to give to others too. Barnsley College is a top college for education, which has always been a priority for me, and the high

calibre of sporting facilities really drew me in. So, when the job became available, I knew that it would be a great fit for me to pass on my knowledge and help to build a top basketball academy in the north of England. “I’m wanting to help develop students both on and off the court, and also to help grow the programme and eventually compete in the top school league. I want to see progression each year, in terms of winning games and increasing numbers at the academy. Another aim is to create a girls’ side to the academy in the coming years to help grow girls’ basketball in the area. My experiences of playing in different countries and for the Great British national team means I can pass on my knowledge to help the players get better every day.” Luke Forgione, Performance and Athlete Development Co-ordinator at the College, added: “We are extremely pleased that

Georgia has agreed to work with us. Her knowledge and expertise, as well as contacts in the UK and overseas, will create opportunities for our students who will be able to gain valuable experience and learn from her knowledge of the professional game, while gaining match day experience and regular support through College games.” Barnsley Sports Academy offers fantastic facilities and a team of expert and specialist coaches supporting talented sports performers in any discipline. Academies include Football, Esports, Rugby, Netball, Basketball, Refereeing and Individual Athlete Academy. For more information on Barnsley Sports Academy visit: www. barnsley.ac.uk/bsa For more information about our full and part-time courses, university-level courses and Apprenticeships in Sport visit: www. barnsley.ac.uk/sport

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Your Letters Fox Valley What is happening to Fox Valley? I was so pleased when the centre opened, to be able to do all my shopping there, and not travel elsewhere. However, I now find that once more I have to travel into Sheffield, to Kilner Way or to Cortonwood to buy reasonably priced clothes for myself and the grandchildren.I have several friends who think the same as me! It would not surprise me if many women start going elsewhere to clothes shop, as the choice is now so limited. That means of course, a trip to a cafe would be elsewhere too. Many women like a choice of clothes shops, they like to browse, and now with Next also moving out we are left with such limited choice. Sandersons and SeaSalt are lovely stores, but many cannot afford the prices. The more reasonably priced oulets in Sandersons, Joules, White Stuff and Petits shoes have also disappeared. Where can we buy shoes ? And clothes for teenagers and children ? It would be interesting to hear what others think. Irene Hope Deepcar

MP explains her decision to vote against the extension of Coronavirus restrictions “Last night, MPs voted to extend the current coronavirus restrictions for a further four weeks. I voted against these regulations, because I don’t believe that there is sufficient evidence to suggest that COVID is still a significant widespread threat to life in the UK. In the Government’s ‘roadmap’, it was anticipated that all restrictions would be lifted on June 21 but sadly this vote means that the current rules will continue until at least July 19. The average number of people who have died

with COVID each day this month is just 7 per day. Whilst every death is a sadness, it is normal for around 1500 people to die in the UK every day, and COVID is now responsible for a tiny proportion of deaths. It’s true that - as expected cases of COVID are rising across the country, but thanks to the vaccine programme, the numbers of people who are currently in hospital with the virus is very very small – there are currently only 1 177 COVID patients in hospital (compared with 37 000 people at the peak in January). The latest data suggests that there are fewer than 60 people in hospital with coronavirus in the whole of Yorkshire and the Humber. The vaccine has also been highly effective. If you catch the Delta variant, one dose of the Astra Zeneca vaccine will reduce your risk of hospitalisation by 71% (two doses 92%) and one dose of Pfizer reduces the risk by 94% (two doses 96%). With all those who are vulnerable to the disease having already been offered the vaccine, the risks of serious illness or death from COVID are now very low indeed. And yet the restrictions on our lives remain serious and are having a damaging impact especially on our young, people in insecure jobs and those waiting for important and sometimes life-saving hospital treatment. And I know from talking to local pub and restaurant owners that it’s almost impossible to operate at a profit under the current restrictions, putting jobs and livelihoods at risk. So I believe that the harms caused by the restrictions now outweigh any potential benefits, which is why I voted against the measures. The Government has advised that the purpose of the delay is to deliver more second doses of the vaccine, so if you’re eligible for your second dose and have not yet booked in, please do. We have had excellent uptake of the vaccination here across the Penistone and Stocksbridge constituency and again I want to offer my thanks to all our Primary Care teams who continue to work so hard to get jabs in arms.” Miriam Cates MP

THEY’RE OFF! BEAT THE STREET OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES IN SHEFFIELD!

The Beat the Street Sheffield campaign is off to an amazing start with 30,500 people signing up to take part on its first day. Beat the Street challenges the whole community, including schools, workplaces and community groups to see how far they can walk, run, scoot, wheel or cycle in return for points and prizes. So far participants have clocked up 15,000 miles with the total mileage increasing rapidly. Beat the Street also aims to encourage people to explore

their local community and discover routes and areas they may not know. It’s free to take part in Beat the Street and is open to anyone in the community, of any age, who would like to get more active or would like to get to know the town better.

all to play for and there are community, workplace and charity leaderboards, so everyone has a chance of winning! Participants can also donate their points to Sheffield Children’s Hospital to help them win a cash donation.

There are 450 Beat Boxes placed on lampposts around Sheffield for the duration of the game. Simply hover your fob (for children, distributed via their primary school) or card (for adults) near the Beat Box to score points for your team. You must hover your card over one Beat Box to start your journey, and then tap another within an hour to score 10 points. The further you travel, the more points you’ll score for your team. The teams that travel the furthest can win hundreds of pounds worth of vouchers for sports or fitness equipment or books.

Beat the Street Sheffield is brought to you by Move More and Sheffield City Council. It is delivered by Intelligent Health, with funding from the National Lottery and Sport England, and local partners.

Currently, Marlcliffe Primary School tops the total points leaderboard and SK Estate Agents are at the top of the average points leaderboard. However, it’s still

Each week of the competition has a different theme, so keep an eye on the weekly newsletters and on social media for news on what’s happening and how to score bonus points. Next week will be ‘Go Explore’, encouraging players to get to know parts of Sheffield they may not be familiar with. THE LAZY DAYS OF SUMMER dead heading and trimming you will need to do – but it’s definitely worth it.

A great idea for patios is a small water feature - and if you’re short on time or space then a container pond is quick and easy to make. You can create a different dimension to any small space, bringing the cool, calming presence of still water to the garden, attracting lots of wildlife and giving you the chance to grow a whole new range of interesting aquatic plants. Choosing the right pot – for your garden and for a successful water feature – is essential. You can use large sized terracotta pots, old Belfast basins and water troughs or half wooden barrels. Several types of aquatic plants can be grown in one container, but aquatic plants can be fast growers so may need thinning out from time to time.

July is the month of high summer and the garden comes alive during hot lazy afternoons to the sound of bees buzzing, gathering pollen from all the plants that you have lovingly nurtured and cared for that are now in full flower.

It’s the time of year that gardens or patios become an extension of our day-to-day living space as we use them for entertaining and relaxing in. When it comes to patios, the real plus side to them is that they are ideal for masses of pots of colourful summer flowers. These pots can

then be extended through the Winter and into Spring with bulbs and Winter bedding to give your patio a longer lasting all-year-round appeal. Do remember though that the more containers you have, the more watering you will have to do during hot periods and the more

and working hard towards achieving them, you can bring them into your life. So, what is manifestation? Well, manifestation is the idea and practice that you can bring something real into your life through attraction and belief, i.e. if you think it, and it will come. It is making your dreams a reality through your thoughts, actions, beliefs, and emotions. So, how can you manifest everything you want into your life? Well firstly you need to decide on what goals and dreams you want to achieve. Write them down somewhere and get really specific about them. It is not good enough to just say, ‘I want to be rich’. You need to be super specific. So instead say ‘I want to make £100,000 in 2021 and I will achieve it by doing XYZ’. Now from here you need to truly believe in your goals like you have already achieved them. You need to let your emotions, thoughts and actions all align towards achieving it. It is not good enough to just say it and believe it (if only it was that easy), you have to work hard towards it too. So, you might say ‘to achieve this I need to do XYZ’ and then set about getting busy. It is not an easy thing to master but it definitely works for some people. In its shortest form it is the practice of positive think-

ing and creating goals and dreams – of which both have benefits for our wellbeing and mental health. If this article has got you wondering how to practice manifestation successfully then I would say that the book The Secret is a great place to start. It has sold millions of copies and has been extremely popular for the last few years. The book is all about manifesting everything you want into your life – whether that be money, happiness, love, success, or anything else. It is used by celebrities, athletes, musicians, millionaires and everyday people like you and me. Whatever you do for the rest of the month I hope you enjoy it. Enjoy the sunshine, enjoy the good times, keep well, stay healthy and for those football fans out there – it’s coming home!

With everything in full bloom, it may now be possible to cut flowers from your garden to have in the home and Dahlias are a popular choice with gardeners for this. Their warm vibrant colours mean that they are often grown specifically as cut flowers and they regularly feature at local horticultural society shows due to their summer flowering. Originally from Mexico, Dahlias flower from July through to the

first frosts in the Autumn and range from dwarf bedding varieties to the popular giant flower heads that adorn gardens around the country. They can be used as bedding plants and border plants and can be added to a mixed border alongside herbaceous perennials like Phlox, Aster and Sedum. Dahlias thrive in any well drained soil and like plenty of sunlight but will need Winter protection in most parts of the UK. The key to success for July is maintenance and good, effective watering. Top tips for this month from the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society)… • Check climbers are secure and pest free • Care for houseplants if away for a few days • Water containers and new plants if dry but be water-wise • Deadhead bedding plants to ensure continuous flowering • Clear algae and weed from ponds and keep topped up • Give the lawn a quick-acting summer feed • Harvest soft fruits • Don’t forget to weed

Wellbeing Corner

Hello! I hope you are well. This month’s article was going to look at celebrities and mental health (which I will save for next month). However, after watching the England game yesterday I decided to change it because of something that happened. England’s goal scorer who won the game for the team was our number 10, Raheem Sterling. Following the game images were circulated of a tattoo Raheem Sterling has on his arm. It is a tattoo of young Raheem with a number 10 on his shirt looking at the Wembley arches. By playing and then scoring in the number 10 shirt, in a European competition at England’s national stadium, his dreams and hopes as shown in his tattoo had become a reality. It reminded me of something called manifestation, which is something we can all apply to our lives. Now, I am not suggesting you should go and get a tattoo (unless you want to), and I am not suggesting you need to watch the football. However, what Sterling showed us through these actions is that by having dreams and goals

The Stocksbridge Golf Club lost their first league match of the season, breaking a run of 5 consecutive wins. Team Captain Liam O'Sullivan, who was unable to play because of work commitments in the match away to Doncaster Town Moor, said it was "a defeat that could easily have been a win." Andrew Finney (0), after a very strong start to the season, lost 3 and 2, whilst Danny Costello (3) won his game by 1 hole. Peter Finney (3) halved his match and was one up with one to play, his opponent birdying the last hole to square the game. Joe Sedgwick (5), in his first outing for the team this season, lost a closely fought game 2 and 1. The team are still very well placed for a promotion spot half way through the season. Back at the Club it has been a busy week of golf despite the cooler and wetter weather conditions towards the end of the week. The Dragons Section competed for the June Medal on 16 June and Noel Weaver (19) won convincingly with a net 61. Noel played very consistent golf for the whole round and even managed a birdie on the par 5 8th. Sandy Murphy (13) was second with a net 64, with Alfred Pearson (27) third with a net 66. The competition counted towards the Dragons Summer Cup league, which currently is being led by Ian Batty with 32 points, with Noel Weaver in second place and Mick Bellamy in third. The Gents Section competed for the Fox Trophy on Saturday 19 June and it was a very closely fought competition. Only three shots, in the stroke play format, separated the top 10 players. The top four players all finished with net 63s, but it was Chris Walker (21) who won the competition on countback. Andrew Finney (0) finished in second place and given he is playing off scratch, he unsurprisingly the lowest gross score of the day. Andrew's round included 5 birdies and only 2

dropped shots. Steve Hill (13) was third and Doug Needham (22) was fourth. The Ladies Section competed for the Strathdene Trophy on Sunday 20 June. The format for the competition was stroke play and Kath Busfield (26) won with a net 69. Kath played the back 9 very well with 3 pars in the last 6 holes. The Moffetts, Terri (34) and Helen (27) along with Liana O'Sullivan (6), all scored net 71s, but it was Terri who took second place on countback. Helen took third and Liana fourth, but she did have the consolation of the lowest gross score. There were three smaller competitions through the week - Elaine Guest (15) winning the Ladies Front 9 on Friday 18 June with 18 points. There was a mid-week Pro's prize on 17 June won by Alec Cowling (23) with 41 points, beating Joe Sedgwick (7) into second place. Joe had the same score as Alec but lost on countback. Lastly the Gents played another Pro's Prize on 20 June, with Nick Rattigan (14) winning with a great stableford score of 42 points. Nick's round included 10 pars and a birdie on the third hole. Ian Hulbert (17) was second with 41 points. Jay Whittaker (18) and Chris Walker (21) both scored 40 points but Jay took third place on countback.

Stocksbridge cricket report Stocksbridge 1st XI - 224-8 (L Grayson 64, A Hirst 50, J Hibbert 25) Hathersage 1st XI - 64 all out (A Hibbert 3-9, J Hibbert 3-9, J Vickers 3-30) man of the match performance from the all rounder. Hathersage we’re all out for a disappointing 64. Another complete all round performance from the ‘green army’ who cement their place at the top of league with six wins from six. They entertain Sheffield Super Strikers at Bracken Moor in the quarter final of the Brian Winston Premier Cup. Stocksbridge 2nd XI 203-7 (J Firth 69, E Freeman 36) Richmond 1st XI 207-6 (Thwaites 3-31)

Photo is Liam Grayson who hit a brilliant 65

The 1st XI entertained Hathersage at Bracken Moor and looked to make it six consecutive wins. Skipper Andy Hibbert won the toss and elected to bat first. The run machine Jack Newton got off to a flyer smashing the Hathersage quickie for 18 runs off the 4th over of the innings. However, Newton was to depart for 18 the next over after missing out on a positive start. His opening partner Price stuck around and frustrated the Hathersage openers but he was removed in the 11th over for 17. Dave Smith was in and out and were Stocksbridge found themselves on 75-3 and needing a partnership to rebuild the innings. Liam Grayson joined Andrew Hirst to the crease and the pair of them started to build and tick it along nicely. The pair of them batted sensibly and complemented each other well, with good balls been turned into 1s and the bad balls being dispatched to the boundary. Hirst brought up his 50, but was removed shortly after. A brilliant 90 run stand with Grayson took the score to 165 with 10 overs to go. Grayson continued to kick on and he was joined at the crease by Joe Hibbert. Grayson brought us a well made 50. Hibbert begin to play a great little cameo before being removed

for 25. The score 214-7. Grayson was removed shortly after for a superb 65, while hitting one of the biggest sixes seen at Bracken Moor in the process. Steve Perry hit a little cameo of 13 to take the score to 224-8 after 40 overs. A commanding total and a brilliant first innings performance. Jake Vickers removed both Hathersage openers, in a great start defending 224 Liam Grayson with a brilliant low catch at first slip with the score 8-1. Vickers struck again in the 8th over to leave the score 27-2. Not to be out done by his bowling partner skipper Hibbert struck twice, to leave the score 40-4. From here on out it was always going to be an uphill struggle for Hathersage. With the home team well and truly on top. Hibbert and Vickers picked up three wickets each, the pair of them continuing their fantastic form with the new ball over the last few weeks. Hathersage were 41-6 and the game was all but over for them. Joe Hibbert replaced Vickers, after a superb opening spell, and picked up a wicket with his second ball. Hibbert junior went on to pick up three wickets to finish the innings off. Liam Grayson couldn’t keep out of the game and picked up a wicket himself, a brilliant

Stocksbridge 2nd XI travelled to Dronfield Woodhouse this weekend to take on high-flying and hard-hitting Richmond. Captain Thwaites won the toss and elected to bat on an interesting looking track. Firth and Ogley again opened the innings, looking to form another strong foundation for the Stocksbridge innings. Ogley fell for 11 and Bob Newton fell for just 5 shortly after. Jack Firth looked in good touch and kept the scoreboard moving with a number of boundaries. Jack Reeves came and went for just 7, leaving Stocksbridge teetering at 50-3. Jack Murfin joined Jack Firth in the middle and the pair put together an important 54 run partnership before Murfin was dismissed for 12. Matt Hague was then clean bowled 2nd ball without troubling the scorers and Richmond sensed an opportunity to wrap up the Stocksbridge innings. Young Jack Firth brought up his 2nd 50 of the season with another crushing boundary. Firth was eventually dismissed for a superb 69, including 9 fours and a 6. The returning Elliot Freeman and Malc Perry were now in the middle for Stocksbridge, with the total at 116-6 but with plenty of overs still to play. Freeman showed no sign of rust, as he and Perry raced into the 20s, forging a vital partnership for Stocksbridge. Freeman raced to 36 including 6 fours, before eventually being bowled by Shabir. Malc Perry continued to propel the innings forward, finishing 27 not out and helping Stocksbridge post an excellent total of 203-7 from their 40 overs. Jack Firth was the star of the show with his 69, his highest score of his career so far. Special mention also to Freeman and Perry for registering an 82-run

partnership at a crucial time for Stocksbridge. Stocksbridge’s reply in the field got off to an excellent start, with Chris Thwaites removing both openers for single figures, leaving Richmond struggling at 14-2. This brought Moneeb Azam and captain Samani to the middle for Richmond. The pair attacked from the off, hitting 6s and 4s galore off both Harris and Murfin. Harris’ 3rd over went for 14, including 2 huge 6s, however the veteran seamer responded superbly, dismissing danger man Samani for 35. Richmond were well up with the run rate, with a number of dangerous and aggressive batsmen still to come. Les Harris claimed another scalp, removing the dangerous Azam for 41, bringing unknown quantity Naveed Rashid to the middle. Rashid and Shabir Ali looked in complete control, firing Richmond quickly to 163-4 and moving them ever closer to their target of 204. Captain Thwaites rang the changes, bringing himself back into the attack in desperate search of a wicket. Thwaites did just that, removing Shabir’s leg stump and giving Stocksbridge a glimmer of hope of claiming the victory. When young opener Rowan Brearley dismissed number 7 batsman Nalin Kumar for a duck, Stocksbridge had more than a fighting chance. However, some incredible hitting from Rashid gave Stocksbridge no real chance, as he saw home the victory for Richmond with a brutal 72 not out in very little time. Thwaites finished with good figures of 3-41 from his 10 overs. Some huge positives for the away side to take away from defeat. Stocksbridge can be more than happy with their total posted with the bat, including young Jack Firth registering a new career best total. Furthermore, Stocksbridge also produced a very good effort in the field and continued to battle in the face of some destructive batting, however unfortunately they were just outgunned by a very strong Richmond outfit. Stocksbridge will look to enact some revenge next week as they return to Dronfield Woodhouse to battle out against Richmond again, this time in the cup quarter finals.

Stocksbridge Park Steels reported back for training at the weekend, announcing the signing of more players for the upcoming season. Prolific goalscorer Joe Lumsden has become the latest player to sign. He currently sits in 5th position on the all-time goalscorers list for Steels and also holds record for most goals in a season with 34. Lumsden returned to the club for his second stint last summer and was able to show the fans what they were missing while he was at Pontefract Collieries. The striker scored three goals during the shortened season despite carrying and injury that required surgery that got delayed due to COVID and fans will be delighted that he will be returning to the Eco Power Environmental Stadium for another season. As well as facing Pontefract this season, Lumsden will also get a chance to face another one of his former clubs in the shape of Tadcaster Albion. Manager Chris Hilton has also revealed that Sam Finlaw has signed on the dotted line for 21/22. Sam Finlaw was very unlucky with Stocksbridge last year having only signed for the club just before the second lockdown pretty much killed any chance of the season being finished. He is actually yet to kick a ball in anger at the Eco Power Environmental Stadium, meaning this will be like a new signing for many Steels fans. The midfielder was a fan favourite at former club Staveley Miners Welfare where he was club captain and made over 100 appearances.
