Christmas events - PAGE 8 + 9
A stalwart of community life in a north Sheffield village has sadly passed away.
“It is with great sadness that we have to announce our Chairperson Julia Bryan passed away on Sunday.
Julia Bryan who set up a children’s centre in Oughtibridge and was chairperson of Worrall Community Association, passed away last weekend.
Julia was involved with Worrall Memorial Hall for over 30 years, becoming a director when the charitable company was set up in 2008 and taking on the position of Chair from 2014.
Julia set up Coumes Spring Children’s Centre in Oughtibridge 25 years ago where she continued to work, teaching local children up until very recently. And was involved with Worrall Memorial Hall for over 30 years Worrall Memorial Hall published the following statement
Julia established the Baby and Toddler Group and played a vital role in organising Worrall Gala, the annual folk and ale festival along with the quiz and other events. As Chair she was also responsible for overseeing regular meetings of the di-
rectors and the day to day running of the Hall.
Julia’s immeasurable contribution to Worrall and the surrounding area will not be forgotten. On behalf of Worrall Community Association and the local community we would like to thank her. She will be sorely missed by all of us. We’re going to produce a photo board for the Memorial Hall to remember Julia and all the things she gave to our community. If anyone has any photographs they would like to share, please send them to us.”

AMAZING FRIENDSHIP MAKES CHALLENGE POSSIBLE 50+ year-old ladies run 50 miles Two friends from Chapeltown, ran the distance throughout November in aid of the charity Dementia UK raising nearly £500. Tracey Thompson, 52 and friend Tracey Hague, 51 began running again after joining a local fitness bootcamp. Tracey H, who works for M&S told Look Local “I joined Jackie's bootcamp in August 2020, it was in lockdown and needed to be active. I have met amazing people here, this is where I met Tracey T and decided I would like to run 5k. I mentioned it to Jackie who offered to coach me, Tracey joined us a few weeks later and we now run 3 times a week and we are so proud because we started from nothing” Tracet T, works for the NHS, saw an ad for Jackie’s outdoor bootcamp last year after spending lockdown with very little exercise. She told Look Local “I used to run years ago, but injured foot so had to call it a day… I saw Jackie’s ad and signed up for the outside bootcamp… it’s the best thing
I ever did , not just for exercise, but for my sanity and company and I have made local friends” The pair, whilst out running decided to take up the challenge of running 50 miles in November. Tracey T went on to say “I feel amazing and so proud of myself, both Tracey and Jackie have been great support. Never did I think or believe I would do 50 miles in 26 days! And I have made amazing friends along the way.” Jackie Carlton who runs outside bootcamps said “I want to express how proud I am of both of these ladies. They came to my bootcamps in all weathers not knowing anyone, and made good friends along the way.” “I feel that my classes have not only helped people get fit, but helped with friendship, company, and have a healthy mindset throughout lockdown and beyond.”

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window.

Superfit legal team notch up the miles A team from a Sheffield legal practice has out-ridden fifty other firms from across the UK to become runner up in the hotly contested ‘Tour De Law’ cycling event. The gruelling charity event saw ten staff from Graysons notch up a staggering 2,909 kilometres in the weeklong event – an average of nearly 291 kilometres per employee! The team rode their bikes on the open road; at home or at the gym and raised £1,700 for the Breast Cancer Now charity – smashing their original £1,000 target. Graysons’ team leader Joshua Davies said: “It was probably one of the most physically and mentally demanding challenges of our lives. Cycling nearly 3000 kilometres between ten of

us isn’t the easiest thing to do and you really have to push yourself to keep going. We all gave it everything to raise as much money for the charity as we could – whilst trying to win the distance competition of course! We are very proud of ourselves and that our efforts raised so much more than our target of £1,000 for Breast Cancer Now.” Graysons Solicitors specialise in property, family law, lifetime planning, wills, estates and trusts, elderly client services, personal injury and clinical negligence. The law firm first formed in 1925 and currently employs around 70 staff.

Students launch their own business Barnsley College Horticulture students, Jonathan Carter and Finlay Green, have turned their gardening hobby into a career with the support of iTrust, the College’s business start-up programme designed exclusively for students. Jonathan and Finlay have always had a keen interest in the gardening and landscaping industry and decided to study Level 2 Horticulture at College to further their knowledge and skills within the sector. Whilst doing the course, they decided to take their love for gardening even further and launch their own business, All Seasons. After four months, their blooming business has 13 customers and they have recently signed an agreement with a private nursery and two estate agents that they will visit monthly for general garden maintenance and perform
duties including: grass cutting; flower, shrub and small tree planting; turfing; and lawn care. As part of the programme, Jonathan and Finlay are due to receive a grant of up to £250 each. This will allow them to purchase full personal protective equipment, business insurance and new gardening equipment so they can grow their business and offer a wider range of landscaping works.
It’s not too late to study at Barnsley College! It offers a range of study programmes including full and part-time vocational courses, apprenticeships, T Levels and university-level courses. The College can also create a bespoke study programme tailored to your needs. To find out more visit www.barnsley. ac.uk, email omlreception@barnsley. ac.uk or call 01226 216 150.

Bus strikes to continue
Further bus driver strikes to take place in Sheffield as pay talks fail Another week of bus driver strike action will take place in Sheffield this month as pay talks failed following last week’s strike, writes the Sheffield Telegraph.
offered employees an increase to the hourly pay rate of 6% with a further 3% in the next 6 months, a total offer of 9% on the current pay rate within 6 months.
Stagecoach bus drivers are set to strike in Sheffield, from Sunday 12 December until Saturday 18 December – all supertram services will not be affected and will run a normal service.
"We feel that this is more than fair and that Unite union is now being unreasonable by not taking this offer back to members to vote upon. Strike action is in no-body's interests.
Strike action will also take place in Barnsley, Rotherham, Dearne Valley and West Yorkshire from Saturday 11 December until Friday 17 December.
“We remain open to continuing discussions with the union and would urge them to call off this unnecessary action which will cause untold inconvenience to local communities and will hit the pockets of our employees and their families.”
Phil Medlicott, Managing Director for Stagecoach Yorkshire, said: “We know that our employees deserve a good pay rise and have
Record numbers ‘flock’ to shopping centre for taste of Christmas cheer
Organisers claim more than 10,000 people flocked to Fox Valley, breaking previous footfall records and giving rise to high hopes for a cracking Christmas at the Sheffield shopping centre. The Coca-Cola Christmas Truck was the main attraction, with people queuing up to two hours to try their hand at a codecracking quest and have their photograph taken with the iconic red truck. Meanwhile food stalls, market traders and shops and eateries all reported a bumper day. Car parks at Fox Valley Way, Liberty Steel, Fox Valley Offices and Stocksbridge Park Steels were all full to capacity, with many more people taking the advice of Fox Valley’s pre-event publicity to find alternative ways to reach the event. Centre Manager at Fox Valley, Claire Reynolds said: “The Coca-Cola Truck is always massively popular – we had one family who travelled from Hull to see it. Added to that were 35 Christmas market and food stalls and our regular retailers who all stayed open late, creating a brilliant festive atmosphere. “After two years of Covid people are ready for a proper Christmas, which for many
means shopping, eating out, music and lights, enjoyed with family and friends. We have a packed schedule of events at Fox Valley between now and Christmas Eve. Based on the crowds we saw yesterday we’re looking forward to a bumper season!” Deepcar family Tony, Debbie and Ethan Wrigley, joined by their dog Buddy, said they’d had a brilliant time at the event. Debbie said: “We’ve had a great time. It was so lovely just to be out and about again and to see people having fun together. It does make you feel like Christmas is here.” Christmas Markets are at Fox Valley’s Market Emporium this weekend, 3rd to 5th December 10am to 4pm, and Santa will be in residence in his grotto with his helpers from Wortley Rotary Club on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th December from 12.30-3pm, helping to raise money for local charities. Changes to GP practices NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning (CCG), in partnership with local GP practices has launched a public information campaign to keep patients informed of the current changes to how they receive care. As GP practices across the city face unprecedented demand, that will only increase as they enter the traditionally busy winter months, the new campaign will reassure patients that they can request a face-to-face appointment or be asked by a clinician to come into the surgery. However, practices will continue to offer remote consultations, either over the phone, online or by video. Posters will be displayed in surgery waiting rooms and social media messages shared by the CCG and practices. Videos have been produced by GP staff to explain what they do to meet patient needs. Dr Terry Hudsen, a GP and Chair of NHS Sheffield CCG, said: “Since the lockdown restrictions were lifted in the summer many people have asked why their GP

practice is still working differently and often when is this going back to normal. “We can’t see that happening now, as we are still in a pandemic and now dealing with the uncertainties of a new variant, Omicron. “I think it’s important for people to understand that waiting rooms are not like other public places, in that the people visiting them are more likely to be ill, elderly and vulnerable which means they are at higher risk of getting COVID19. For these reasons we need to continue with restrictions, to keep everyone safe. “GP practices have done a fantastic job in keeping their surgeries open and vaccinating patients and I’d like to thank them for their work.” The latest NHS figures for September 2021 show that there were 286,179 GP appointments in Sheffield. The majority were face-toface, 176,127 compared to 125,168 by phone.

Oughtibridge’s recently formed Women’s indoor soft ball cricket team recorded their first win in the Winter league at the weekend. With 2 teams in the league, it was the first outing for most of the squad. Playing against an experienced Super Kings team in their firstmatch, Oughtibridge reached 285 runs, only to be pipped at the post
at their opponents won in the last over, reaching 293. Buoyed with a bit of confidence, and learning from the experience all the time, the Oughtibridge Ladies made 282 in their next match against a strong Wickersley side, and this proved to be enough as some great bowling & fielding restricted them to 252, Oughtibridge winning by 30 runs.
The team was made up of Liz Harris, Samantha Coventry, Jayne Everitt, Kerry Bower, Sian Hoyland & Sarah Hoyland all looking pleased with their win, pictured above. Look out for SANTA STOP near you
After extensive lobbying the Rotary Club of Wortley, have received confirmation from Santa to join the Christmas Eve tour throughout the areas of North Sheffield, starting at 3pm from Wortley Post Office. Santa has also agreed to attend the ‘Northern Lights Santa run’ through Stocksbridge, Deepcar, Wharncliffe Side, Oughtibridge and Worral on the 16th December. Starting from the Fox Valley shopping centre 4.30pm. The Club will attend at the designated stops in these areas for children to come along to meet Santa.
We are hopeful, that hundreds of people with their children turn up on both occasions, where due to the current Covid-19 situation,
Christmas Eve signs highlighting the event, will be placed at the usual “Santa Stop” lamp post locations. Installation of the signs will commence on the 5th December 2021. Donations kindly made by the general public on these evenings, which are most welcome, will be subsequently distributed to local and needy causes, such as the Sheffield Children’s Hospital. We would like to pass on the best wishes from Santa and the Rotary Club of Wortley and look forward to seeing everyone returning this year.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

GRANT
APPLICATIONS February 2022 If you are involved in a community based group and wish to apply/reapply for a small grant then ask for an application form at the above shop at 25 Button Row, Stocksbridge, S36 1GL We consider grants from each group once every 12 months. Closing date Friday February 21 2020
Good news from Bridge Community Shop
There has been an independent Health Forum in Stocksbridge since the demise of the Community Health Councils in 2003. It has met monthly since that time until the last 2 years when it has been on hold because of the pandemic. It’s purpose was to be informed about the health needs of the community and consult on strategy documents and changes to local health services. It was open to anyone in the area to attend, though attendance during the last few years has been limited to about 10 or 12 enthusiasts. In 2015, in association with Sheffield University, the group initiated the production of a Health Strategy and a compilation of a comprehensive list of local groups. This eventually helped Stocksbridge achieve People Keeping Well (PKW) status, and access to Sheffield City Council funding. This helped the development of local dementia services, a bereavement help line and a Diabetes activity day. Being part of PKW means we continue to be in communication with the City Council and this has helped us access other funding, contributing to the developments at the Leisure Centre as well as providing a platform for attracting other money into Stocksbridge and Upper Don over the next few years. However, we now feel that the aims of the group can be met in other ways - the patient groups based at each surgery, PKW, the Save Our NHS Sheffield Group (ssonhs-organize@googlegroups.com )and other groups in the town. We therefore feel it is time to disband the group in its current form. The small amount of money in the account will be given to the Stocksbridge Care Group for their continuing work of neighbourhood visiting, the Friday drop in for older people and the Bereavement and Dementia services.
We, the trustees of The Bridge Community Shop would like to thank the local community for their support over the past months. We are now in a position to consider grant applications from community groups. Application forms are available from the shop at 25 Button Row, Stocksbridge. The legacy of the group will continue through its contribution to the Town Fund Project, in the form of providing a scoping document, in association with Sheffield Hallam University, that should ensure an update of the Health Strategy is carried out. This will be produced, together with the development of a framework of principles, relating to: employment, pollution, education and training and so on, against which the main construction work can be assessed, in terms of its contribution to the overall health and well being of the area. The PKW steering group will be able to use the information from this work to help inform its future programs. Watch this space !

Local MP I’m sorry, look local asked for letters concerning our Penistone & Stocksbridge MP should be forwarded to her directly which I have done. The standard letter I received said she was getting a tremendous amount of mail and couldn’t say that I would receive a reply, hence my letter today. This to me proves she must have a vast amount of disgruntled constituents and Looklocal readers so expect a bulging post bag. Ms Cates voting record is detrimental to her constituents. I would like to highlight just 4 votes:-
1. Voted to cover up the Paterson corruption charge John Cornell which was then pulled due to the vast majority of Chair and on behalf of the Health Forum the public dissatisfaction of the government.
SVB Christmas Show cancelled
2. HS2 east coast line was scrapped which was the main area of levelling up the country for investment and jobs in Yorkshire.
3. Social care plan which takes from the poor to help the rich. They again broke their promise they were elected on that nobody would have to sell May we use this medium to let all those hoping to their home to pay for care. Ultimately a sell off attend the Christmas Show staged by Steel Valley of the NHS will come only benefiting the share Beacon at the Rugby Club that, in view of current holders. restrictions, the show will be postponed until Covid guidelines are changed. Tickets already 4. Voted to allow sewage outfall into our rivers. purchased can be saved for the postponed show or So hell bound in supporting the PM and his cronies money reimbursed by phoning 0114 4389521. I wonder if she would follow him off a cliff. Dear Look Local,
During lockdown, ‘The Beacon’ collected stories from local people about past events in the valley and from these, with the support of our Town Council, wrote scripts and then recorded a number of ‘radio plays’ that are available to view on the internet by using the link https://tinyurl.com/yckvfnf9.
She’s happy for the press to take pictures when the news looks good, all this work is on the backs of our excellent hard working councillor Julie Grocutt whose been fighting for the redevelopment of Stocksbridge and the rail extension for years.
Ms Cates must accept her actions will cause harm The plan is to extend this project and anyone who to many of her constituents. She’s got to live with would like a story to be remembered in this way is her actions but does she care. invited to contact Mandy (who wrote the previous Chris Dearns scripts) on manyja@hotmail.co.uk . Oughtibridge Many thanks Maureen Aitken

Mum wants to help other families affected by childhood sight loss
“If it wasn’t for all the support that we’ve received we might still be in a very deep and dark place,” says mum Sharn.
“Our Family Practitioner told me: ‘if you ever need somebody to talk to, we’re here for you’,” explains Sharn.
She says the day she received the diagnosis about her daughter Maya’s condition was the worst day of her life.
“Since then, they’ve provided a safe space where I can explore my feelings. She suggests play ideas and resources, and signposts me to useful services.”
“‘Your daughter is blind’ were four words that changed my life forever. I heard them when Maya was just nine weeks old – it felt like someone had crushed me.”
“She’s shown me that there are no limits for Maya – just adaptations that can help her to achieve all the usual milestones any child would expect to achieve.”
“I woke up as one person and went to bed as another.”
“I hope she’ll believe in herself enough to make her own choices, have a career and maybe one day have a family of her own. I hope she’ll show the world just how much you can achieve when you’re blind.”
But Sharn says two-year-old Maya and her family, who live in Shropshire, can face the future with hope and optimism because of the support of the Royal Society for Blind Children (RSBC). The charity’s Families First service has provided emotional and practical support since Sharn met their local Family Practitioner in a hospital waiting room, just days after she found out Maya couldn’t see.
It’s all meant so much to Sharn and Maya that they’re telling their story in the RSBC Christmas Appeal to help the charity raise money and spread the word, so other families are able to receive the same muchneeded support.
“I know that every blind child and their family deserves someone at their side to navigate what can be some really painful and challenging times,” says Sharn. “RSBC has provided us with a newfound vision for the future – a realisation that, although there will be hurdles, we can overcome them.” “Without RSBC, we wouldn’t be as stable as a family or looking ahead to a bright and exciting future.” “Now I watch Maya every single day in complete and utter wonder. She is incredible and I truly have to pinch myself that she’s mine.” If you would like to help more families like Maya’s to get the support of an RSBC Family Practitioner, you can donate to the charity’s Christmas Appeal at www.rsbc.org.uk/donate To find out more about RSBC’s life changing work please visit their website at www.rsbc.org.uk

Speedway XMAS Tigers announce signings PARCELS A message from Churches Together in Stocksbridge and District Churches Together in Stocksbridge and District (CTSD) regrettably have to say that they are unable to distribute their Christmas parcels to the over 80-yearold in our town this year. The limitations arising as a result of Covid and their effects on isolation and communications has made it very difficult to update the list of people who have become 80 or have passed away during the past year and consequently CTSD decided not do parcels this year. We hope to be able to offers parcels next year as we feel that they send a message which says the churches have you all in mind at this special time of Christmas. We wish you all, whether 80 or not, a very happy Christmas and a better new year than 2021. Christmas Services are open in all our churches and a list of these is shown elsewhere in Look Local.
SHEFFIELD have pulled off two sparkling signings as they prepare for their second season of Premiership racing.
Polish star Tobiasz Musielak, a title winner with Swindon in 2019, is returning to British Speedway with the Owlerton club. And he will be joined by former Grand Prix and World Cup star Craig Cook in a powerful side. Jack Holder, Adam Ellis and Kyle Howarth are back from last season’s side along with Stefan Nielsen at reserve and Connor Mountain returns after a spell with the club in 2018 when he made 16 appearances. Fans have welcomed the signings with open arms but there is some disappointment about them being unable to use Josh Pickering because his average is too high for the points limit. Boss Simon Stead is back for another season after his world title triumph with Great Britain in October and teenage ace Dan Thompson will gain some valuable experience as the club’s number eight rider. Club co-owner Damien Bates said: “I’m extremely pleased with the way the team has come together and I think the fans will be delighted with it. “It was always important for us to keep Jack Holder and Adam Ellis because they
Chap hit six
settled in brilliantly last season and they were both keen to come back to us. “In Tobiasz and Craig we welcome new signings. I saw the footage of Tobiasz winning the Grand Prix qualifier at Glasgow and he was amazing that night. “He has plenty of experience on British tracks too which is important and won the league in his last season here. I’m sure he will enjoy it at Sheffield. “We’ve seen Craig have some fantastic meetings around Sheffield and the nice thing about him is there’s no pressure on him. He’s not our number one or two riders, we have no set targets or expectations on him we just want him to enjoy his racing in Sheffield colours. “Kyle Howarth was one of the first names on the team sheet and we’re thrilled to have him back. “We felt Stefan Nielsen deserved another chance with us and we’re pleased to hand him that, plus Connor Mountain is a good rider for us to have as our Rising Star. “It’s nice to include young Dan Thompson in the group, we’re sure he will only gain experience by being around the club. “I like the balance within the team and we’re really looking forward to next season.”
Chapeltown RBL 6-2 Sheaf House
Denham Saxton continued his impressive scoring form by hitting a hat trick to make it 6 goals in his last 4 games. Saxton opened the scoring after a Jacob Walkland cross, sliding under the oncoming goalkeeper. Ben Stringer then picked out Saxton, who volleyed superbly from the edge of the area. Debutant Jed Phillips made it 3-0 just after the break when he was found in the area by Mitch Savage. Sheaf House pulled it back to 3-1 following a defensive mix up, but
it was soon 4-1 as Harley Wilson found Saxton to complete his hat trick with a composed finish. Ben Stringer hit the bar with a header, and then won a penalty which Morgan Cowell despatched. Sheaf House scored again to make it 5-2, and the scoring was complete as Walkland crossed again, this time for Adam Simpson to guide the ball home first time. Photo by Ciara Fitzmaurice

It was another 16-1 victory over a team that was sitting above them. Mark Wingfield remains unbeaten this year at number 4 and again made light work of his match with a 3-0 win.
Alex Timmins-Jones and Ed Walker completed the victory, both winning 3-0.

This was the third game running that Stocksbridge have claimed maximum points and repeated a 16-1 score line. This week’s excellent victory was even more telling as it came over a team who started the match above them in the table. The 16 points gained will move Stocksbridge up to 2nd place in the table with a game in hand over Abbeydale, who sit above them. Stocksbridge travel to the undefeated Abbeydale in a crunch match this week. Stocksbridge Squash hold an open night on Thursday 7pm to 9pm at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre and new players are always welcome. It’s £3 for members and £4 for non-members.

rugby: Stocksbridge triumph in tricky weather Cold, wet, dark & generally horrible weather conditions greeted Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby along with opponents Sheffield Oaks & Stanley Rodillians as they prepared for their 10 a-side mini tournament at the weekend. With an opportunity to give the wider squad players some valuable game time, Stocksbridge welcomed back Ben Tyers along with new face Ashley Statham & veteran rampaging forward Brendan ‘bull’ Rowett. Tyers, was to open the scoring in the first game against Oaks with a scintillating 60 yard dash to the line, further tries from Reese ‘diesel’ Aspin, plus a conversion from Scotty Bowskill gave Stocksbridge a 17pts to 5 pts half time lead. Oaks mounted a come back in the 2nd half but tries from the influential Bowskill, & Ricky Rowett, sealed a win for the hosts. Bowskill & Spencer formed a useful pairing at half back, whilst the Senior Rowett took the Man of the Match award.
The unfortunate Matt Wilson had to be replaced at half time suffering from early signs of hypothermia as playing conditions faded.
In the next game Oaks were edging Rods before the official decided the conditions had deteriorated too much for the game to continue. This meant by virtue of the number of tries scored that Stocksbridge Rugby were awarded the trophy for the tournament & old timer Brendan ‘bull’ Rowett was declared as the Charlesworth Landscapes player of the tournament, looking in better condition than the other Rowett !! Stocksbridge Rugby return to league action this weekend with a difficult clash away at league leaders Rotherham Phoenix with Director of Rugby, Andy Tyers saying ‘if we focus on ourselves & doing the basics right, then we’ll be a handful for any team,’ adding ‘the boys are training well, & we’re ready for action’. The Piggy’s then complete 2021 with a home ‘Christmas Jumper’ fixture against Hessle
Rugby at Coal Pit Lane on 18th Dec, kick off 2.15pm, all are welcome. Meanwhile in the Clubhouse on Manchester Road, Sunday 12th December sees the popular Deepcar Brass Band playing carols & seasonal music from 3pm till 6pm, this too is a ‘Christmas Jumper’ event, so ‘get them ready’ said host Lucie.

Golfers Brave the Wet Weather Stocksbridge Golf Club members are a hardy bunch and after last week's snow had finally cleared, they were out battling rain and heavy winds. Competitive golf finally got underway on Thursday, with some very wet conditions underfoot, rain and strong winds. The Gents section competed for the Midweek Pro's Stableford Prize, with a small field taking part. Stuart Marsh (20) came
out on top with 37 points and a strong finish with three pars. It was a family dominated leader board with Joe Marsh (21) coming second on 35 points. Pete Westhead (9) came in third with 34 points.
In very wet and windy conditions on Saturday 4 December, round 8 of the Gents Winter Cup took place. Malcolm Ingles (18) saw it through to win with 32 points, a pretty good score considering
how tough the playing conditions were. Eddie Smith (22) was second with 31 points and Phil Smith (26) was third with 29 points. The Ladies Section had slightly better weather on Sunday 5 December, though it was still very windy. They compete for the Ladies Winter Trophy and sensibly kept this round to 9 holes. Ann Whitfield (13) won by a clear margin with 12 points. Margaret
Pearson (15) and Kath Busfield (13), both scored 9 points, but Margaret took second place on countback. Finally, on the same day, the Gents also competed for a Pro's Prize Sunday Stableford. Craig Batty (5) won with 33 points, in a very steady round with 10 pars. Andy Taylor (17) was second with 32 points, the same score as Mick Hulbert (11) but with a better back 9 score.

Keightley at the double Athersley Recreation 2-4 Penistone Church FC A report by Martin Webb Athersley hosted this match with only a single draw saving them from six straight defeats. Church arrived with four wins from five matches, but having lost 1-0 to Athersley in Penistone there was no guarantee of which way the result would go. A rather dank day meant the pitch was soft on top, and Church fell behind after only 17 minutes. Church did not control the ball in midfield, a crisp pass out to the right opened up Church's defence and a good header at the near post whistled past Chris Snaith. Church responded by moving the ball nicely from left to right. A sharp pass into Eddie Newsome found Nathan Keightley who again hit the right post.
Oughtibridge find themselves top of the East Midlands Regional Premier League following an impressive 7-1 win on the road. Skipper Kathryn Mudge buried an early penalty before a superb move saw Millie Kenyon cross for Laura Cain (pictured) to smash home.
Church were level after 27 minutes when a deep cross from the right looped over the Athersley defenders and Brett Lovell levelled the score with a crisp shot.
Lucy Ridley poached the 3rd before Kenyon finished before half time to make it 4. At the other end Molly Hutchinson made some great saves to keep the students out in a much more even game than the score suggests.
The away side were soon in front. A good move down the left resulted in a free kick 25 yards out. Nathan Keightley's blasted shot found the bottom right corner.
In the 2nd half Kenyon scored another 3 while the students deserved their consolation. Next up is a massive game down at the War Memorial on Sunday 12th against 2nd place Mansfield Town Ladies, KO 2pm

Shortly before half-time Church edged furter ahead with another Nathan Keightley free-kick, this time his curling effort squeezed past the wall and just inside the right post. Half time Athersley 1 PCFC 3 Goal 60 minutes, Church put the game beyond doubt on the hour. They won a throw-in and a great turn on the right opened up the Athersley defence. The ball was cut back across goal by Jordan Coduri and the stranded keeper could only watch as the ball nestled in the bottom right of the goal. The home-side did pull a goal back towards the end but Church had dominated long sections of this match and deservedly won. This gives Church 5 wins out of 6. “A great win tonight winning four-two away at Athersley. All in all we deserved the victory, it’s a great reaction from when we played them at home and lost one-nil, it was about putting that right. We’ve played two games in four days and getting six points is massive for us
