SMART Scooter rider 17 MOTORWAYS IN 17 DAYS caught UPDATE M A R AT H O N S
Update on investigation following smart motorway fatalities in South Yorkshire
T/Assistant Chief Constable Sarah Poolman said: "I would like to express my heartfelt sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives on the smart motorway in South Yorkshire. Families and campaigners are fighting with dignity and admirable determination in their search for answers and action following these tragedies. "Following concerns expressed by senior coroner Nicola Mundy at the pre-inquest review into the death of Mrs Nargis Begum, the force launched a 'scoping exercise' to ascertain whether there is a reasonable suspicion that Highways England may have committed the criminal offence of corporate manslaughter. Within our terms of reference, we also included the incident which led to the deaths of Mr Jason Mercer and Mr Alexandru Murgeanu. "As part of our work, we sought specialist advice from the Crown
Prosecution Service (CPS). Having considered the CPS advice, we have concluded that in the circumstances, Highways England cannot be held liable for the offence of corporate manslaughter. This is because, in legal terms, the organisation did not owe road users a 'relevant duty of care' under the terms set out in the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007. For this reason, I have brought the police investigation into this offence to an end. "I regret that South Yorkshire Police is unable to provide all the answers that families and campaigners are looking for. However, I can assure them that a thorough and comprehensive report comprising our findings and all of the materials we have gathered during our scoping exercise is now being completed. This report will be provided to Ms Mundy before Mrs Begum's inquest is resumed. It can also be made available to the government and Highways England, with a view that its contents may help inform further enquiries into smart motorways via other avenues in the future."
Louis Alexander, 22, will be attempting to run 17 marathons in 17 days in memory of the 17 years his grandfather lived with dementia. He is also hoping to raise £17,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UK through this incredible challenge.
The first marathon will take place on 16th February and Louis will be kicking off the challenge in Sheffield. Louis’ grandfather lived at Chatsworth Grange Care home, Sheffield, in his later years, which is where Louis will commence his first marathon. Despite not being local to Sheffield himself, this area holds a place in his heart because of his grandfather. He will also be visiting our local research lab at the University of Sheffield on the day to meet some of our scientists and chat about the groundbreaking work they are doing to find treatments for dementia

The rider of this scooter thought he could evade PCSO’s when he ducked off the road and round the back of some flats. However, he did not consider the eagle eyed PCSO’s as they located the offender hiding in a stair well. When checks were carried out it was found that he was not insured to ride the moped. The vehicle was swiftly seized under the Road Traffic Act and the rider will be dealt

To prepare for the Peaking for Paces event, and raise as much money as possible in the next 21 months, the team plus their friends and family are holding a series of fundraising activities to support the children, adults and families supported by the charity. The first of these has concluded this week with a virtual John O’Groats to Lands End cycle ride. Collectively, 1,000 miles has been cycled by the team during January – the
distance between the UK’s most extreme locations. In the coming months, supporters will be taking part in the Sheffield Half Marathon, skydiving, enduring Tough Mudder and trekking the Yorkshire Three Peaks and Snowdon as part of the efforts to bring in tens of thousands of pounds. All the events are on the special website www. peakingforpaces.co.uk. The Peaking for Paces challenge is now being formally launched by Paces pupil and fundraising superstar, 11-year-old ‘Captain’ Tobias Weller BEM. In a special video message, he said: “I'm excited to be able to introduce to you a really big challenge, which an amazing group of people are taking on to support me, my classmates, and everyone at Paces. “Next November, they will take on the challenge of trekking to Mount Everest Base Camp. Yes, Mount Everest
Base Camp! Between now and then there'll be fundraising every month and some brilliant events, which I'm super-excited to hear about. “I am chuffed to bits that they are supporting Paces and I hope that you are supporting too.” Dominic Ryles, one of those who came up with the Peaking for Paces challenges, and who will be part of the Everest Base Camp team next year, said: “Seeing the amazing work which the Paces charity do has really empowered me to do more to support them and I wanted to do that by being taken out of my comfort zone - travelling to Nepal and trekking to Everest Base Camp is certainly that! “I am so excited for everything that is planned between now and November 2023 and inspired by the young people of Paces, like Captain Tobias, who go above and beyond every day.
