A 50 year-old man who died in Sheffield last week has been named, as his family pay tribute to him. At 9.21pm on 16 June emergency services were called to reports of cause for concern of a man at a fishing pond off Herries Road in the Shirecliffe area of Sheffield. The man, now named as father of three Kevin Hodkinson from Sheffield was taken to hospital via ambulance but sadly pronounced dead a short time later. Kevin’s family have released a photograph and shared the following tribute to him. They said: “Kevin was a much loved son, dad, grandad, brother, partner, uncle and friend.

“We are devastated to lose him.”
Kevin’s family ask that their privacy is respected at this difficult time and that people are mindful of speculation in comments shared online. Officers are working at pace investigating the circumstances into Kevin’s death and have charged a man with murder in connection to the Kevin’s death. Kieran Hayes, 33, of Oxspring Bank Road in Sheffield is charged with murder and has been remanded into police custody. He appeared before Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on Monday (20 June) morning. Anyone with information that may help officers with their inquiry is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 1014 of 16 June or online through our website.
Sheffield professional golfer Matt Fitzpatrick became a ‘major winner’ when he won the US Open over the weekend. The 27 year old from Sheffield, won by 1 shot from his nearest rival, after he carded a final round of 68. Sheffield TV presenter Dan Walker said of his fellow sheffielder “THAT IS SIMPLY BRILLIANT from Matt Fitzpatrick. Hugging his brother Alex, crying with his Dad Russ and Mum Sue. It couldn’t happen to a nicer family. PURE SHEFFIELD STEEL.”

TOBIAS WELLER: CAMPAIGNS FOR ACCESSIBLE PLAYGROUNDS A young fundraiser has completed a new challenge to raise money to create accessible playgrounds near his home, writes the BBC. Tobias Weller, 11, who has cerebral palsy and autism, has taken part in challenges in his home city of Sheffield, raising more than £158,000. His latest feat saw him use his race walker to complete a 1km (0.62 mile) walk around a Sheffield park. "It's not right that disabled kids can't access their local playgrounds and I want to change that," he said. The Tobias in the Park event saw
dozens of people join him on the walk at Endcliffe Park, with money raised going towards new play equipment accessible for children with disabilities. "Look at how many people have come to show their support," he said. "I want to raise awareness and money for accessible playgrounds." The money raised from his efforts will go towards making two playgrounds, including one at Endcliffe Park, more accessible. He has raised almost £3,000 in his latest challenge.
‘A zeal for the outdoors’ Parents seek to enlist children on outdoor activities Demand to join the Scouts has reached the highest level since World War Two, according to the organisation behind the movement. The Scout Association said nearly 90,000 young people across the UK are on current waiting lists. They said an "increased zeal" for the outdoors post-pandemic is behind the surge. Meanwhile Girlguiding say they are also seeing a spike in demand, with nearly 55,000 people waiting for a place. Simon Carter, national spokesman for the Scout Association, said in the last year membership has grown by 16%. "We have not seen this level of growth since the Second World War," he said. "Lockdown was a grim period for young people. They couldn't go
anywhere. There is now more zeal for the outdoors." Across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire there are currently 4,949 children waiting to join the organisation. Angela Salt OBE, chief executive of Girlguiding, which has 290,000 members across the UK, said membership had grown by 20% in the past year and echoed Mr Carter’s plea for volunteers “It is really great to see the opportunities Girlguiding offers acknowledged through the significant increase in those wanting to join us in the past year,” she said. “With more girls wanting to join, we urgently need the help of more adult volunteers so we can continue to provide girls the space to learn new skills, build confidence and have fun and adventure with a ready made group of friends.”

Foodie Fun Enjoyed by All at Fox Valley Food Festival

Shops selling knives to ‘kids’ Officers from Rotherham Safer Neighbourhood Services and representatives from the Trading Standards department of Rotherham Council were out this week undertaking a test purchase operation targeting shops across the town. As part of the operation, South Yorkshire Police cadets, aged 16, went into the shops with the aim of trying to buy a knife. Two out of the eleven retailers that were visited failed the test purchase.
Thousands of people enjoyed a packed weekend of fabulous food and entertainment at Fox Valley’s two-day Food Festival. The event was staged to celebrate the centre’s sixth birthday and a full two-day programme of musical entertainment and more than 50 food and drink stalls across the centre attracted the crowds on both days. Visitors were treated to a great line up of live music from the centre’s entertainment tipi by talented, local performers including Tom Masters and Alexandra Carlos.
Families were spoilt for choice with tastes from around the globe on offer from Greek to Indian, a wood fired pizza oven and Turkish street food.
The Fox Valley team are now working hard preparing for the Christmas lights switch on event which will be taking place on Friday 18 November.
Centre Manager at Fox Valley, Claire Reynolds, said: “It’s been a fantastic weekend and the feedback has been great from our visitors during the festival as well as from the traders who have joined us.
To keep up to date with events at Fox Valley go to www.foxvalleysheffield.co.uk
“It’s great to have large-scale event’s back in the calendar and we’re making plans on how to make the festival bigger and better for next year.”
OUTDOOR EATING: A busy scene from the Fox Valley Food Festival.
The test purchase operation is in an attempt to reduce under age sales of knives and ensure knives do not fall into the hands of young people. PC Steve Nile from the Rotherham Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “Test purchasing operations like this are incredibly important in our bid to stop the sale of knives to children as we have a duty to keep people safe. “We're working with our partner Trading Standards teams and the businesses themselves to make sure this doesn't happen again. It is a criminal offence to sell knives and bladed articles to children and this operation is a stark reminder to businesses and their staff that they need to take the sale of all age-restricted products seriously otherwise they could find themselves being prosecuted. “My message to retailers is, always check a young person’s ID and question why they would want a knife. If in doubt don’t sell them one. Your actions could save serious harm being caused to that person or another.”

School gets GOOD Ofsted report Students and staff at Stocksbridge High School are celebrating the outcome of an Ofsted inspection that has rated the school as good in all areas. This is the first inspection of the school since it converted to an academy with Minerva Learning Trust in 2017. A team of inspectors spent two days in the school in May and met with leaders, staff and many students. They looked at the curriculum and support the school offers and visited many lessons as well as examining student workbooks. The views of parents and families were also considered through surveys and telephone conversations. At the end of the process Stocksbridge High School was declared to be a good school. The Headteacher Andy Ireland said: “This is a brilliant outcome for
the school community and is a true reflection of all that has been done over the last five years to improve staff and students' hard work, dedication and resilience of staff and the students' hard work and dedication to the school.
at school and remarked how Leaders make sure that there is equal opportunity for all pupils to participate. The ambition of the curriculum was identified as a strength as was how teachers challenge their pupils to achieve their best.
It is a testament to the hard work, dedication and resilience of staff and students. My aims as Headteacher are to provide an ambitious and supportive education that ensures our community has a school in which they feel rightly proud.”
Inspectors also praised the school’s approach to safeguarding stating “Governors and leaders place safeguarding as a priority for all. There is an effective culture of safeguarding in the school.” Inspectors found that bullying was not tolerated and that pupils are encouraged to report their concerns.
Andy Ireland continued “we are absolutely delighted and would like to acknowledge the partnership and collaboration across Minerva Learning Trust in both reaching this outcome and the future success of the school.” In the report, inspectors praised the wide range of activities for pupils to take part in
The full inspection report is available on the school and Ofsted websites. As in all schools, there remains areas for further improvement, but the inspection team were satisfied that the plans and the capacity are in place to address these further.

AWARD FOR FUN CC INTERIORS RUN ORGANISER A FUN run event that was held in Penistone last weekend in memory of two young boys who were killed in a house fire - and their brave domestic abuse campaigning mother picked up a surprise award. Claire Throssell MBE has campaigned for the past five years to overturn the presumptive contact rule which allows both parents in a separating couple access to their children, regardless of whether one has a history of domestic abuse.

She began her campaign two years after the death of her two children, Jack and Paul, nine and 12 respectively, who died in a house fire started by her estranged husband in Penistone.
HUGE SELECTION OF SUITES
Claire hopes she can prevent children from being forced to have contact with a parent if they have a history of domestic violence and believes that children’s voices are not heard during divorce proceedings. On Sunday in Penistone the latest fun run - coming back after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid pandemic - saw more than 200 runners and even more supporters turn up in memory of the two youngsters. On the same day Claire said she was ‘surprised’ and ‘caught off guard’ as she received a Penistone Hero Community Award - an accolade she says means so much to her. She’s also continuing to campaign for the ‘unsafe’ presumptive contact bill - which assumes when a couple splits that both parents will want and be able to see their children without taking into account a history of domestic abuse - to change.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Got something to say?
23rd June 2022
Issue 1223
I read with interest the article in your edition of 9 June and to be honest was surprised at the views reported by Dr Allen, Clinical Care Director at NHS Sheffield CCG. During the recent Local Election Campaign I, along with the Labour Candidate Matt Wilson spoke to several hundred electors accross Burncross, Grenoside and High Green. A common issue raised was difficulty in accessing local GP services. The assertion that most Patients like On Line and Telephone appointments was certainly not reflected in the conversations we had with voters. Many in fact were concerned that for older people and those living in areas with Poor internet access was a real barrier for people seeking Health Care. Furthermore the vast majority of people complained about waiting in a telephone queue for up to an hour, being cut off before the phone was answered and people being told that a doctor would “phone sometime between 2:00 and 6:00. For people who work this is not a convenient service. During the campaign, me and Matt collected numerous signatures on a petition reflecting the above concerns. Miriam Cates did agree to see Matt to discuss these issues in May but has had to re arrange and we are awaiting further communication from her office. In the meantime me and Matt would like to assure all those who voiced concerns to us that we will continue to follow this matter up. If you want to contact us about this matter please feel free to contact me or Matt. Our e mail addresses are adam.hurst153@btinternet. com or mattbewilson@outlook.com

Miriam Cates reply Peter Morton calls for Miriam Cates to do something about sending refugees to Rwanda ( letters 16th June). Perhaps first he should look at her voting record to realise that she is a puppet and will do what ever the whips tell her and no doubt even voted for the policy to forcibly remove refugees.

Actor becomes ambassador for Peak district
Actor Kelvin Fletcher has taken on a new role close to his heart – as ambassador for the Peak District National Park Foundation. The former Emmerdale actor and Strictly Come Dancing winner, who now runs his own Peak District farm, will champion the conservation and engagement work of the Foundation and help to share its vision of a National Park enjoyed and conserved by everyone. Kelvin, who grew up in Oldham, swapped urban life for the countryside when, post-lockdown, he and wife Liz bought their 120-acre farm, which they share with their daughter Marnie, son Milo and newborn twin boys. The couple’s farming experiences were charted in the BBC1 reality series Kelvin’s Big Farming Adventure. “I’ve always had a great affection for the outdoors and have spent a lot of time walking, not only in the Peak District but throughout the country,” says Kelvin. “The Peak District, for me, represents the north – and I’m a very, very proud northerner. For us, it’s the best of both worlds – beautiful countryside surrounded by some great towns and cities. I think it’s the perfect place. “The Peak District Foundation is a cause that’s close to my heart - and my ambassador role is a genuine connection. I live in the Peak District, with a young growing family and, for a long time, I was an urban visitor, a walker in the National Park.
“Hopefully I’m in a position where I can help to raise the profile of the Foundation and share its messages. The countryside is for everybody – and we all have a responsibility to look after it, ensuring it’s there for future generations.”
“We need to provide constant care – we are just the current custodians of the National Park, looking after it for future generations. We’ve all got a responsibility, not just as landowners but as visitors and participants.”
Kelvin is currently commuting from his farm to London’s National Theatre, where he is in rehearsals for the comedy Jack Absolute Flies Again. The production runs from July to September.
The Foundation’s fundraising development manager Sarah Slowther said: “We’re delighted to welcome Kelvin as our new ambassador. He really shares our enthusiasm for the Peak District.
He adds: “Life on the farm is busy and challenging, but this is one of the quieter times, when maintenance and field work happens.
“Kelvin has a genuine interest in our conservation projects and our work restoring nature and improving biodiversity. And, like us, he’s passionate about connecting people to nature and providing opportunities for communities surrounding the Peak District to improve their wellbeing by enjoying the National Park.
“My understanding of farming and the countryside has increased a hundredfold over the last 12 to 18 months. I have a very enthusiastic and inquisitive nature – and once you get an understanding of something, an appreciation follows. “The Peak District wouldn’t look as beautiful as it does if it wasn’t for farmers. It changes with the seasons – with new colours and textures throughout the year. “Land has to be managed with balance. We need to welcome people and also be respectful of livestock and agriculture. Some of my land is a public footpath and if someone is not shutting gates or they’re dropping litter, there are consequences. “I see it from both sides. I’m now a landowner but I have also been a visitor, so I know how important it is to find that balance.
“His Peak District farm has given Kelvin a great understanding of the challenges facing the National Park and the balance between farming, conservation and access. Kelvin and his family are great role models and ambassadors for the Peak District and we’re looking forward to working with him to raise the profile of our charity and raise vital funds for our Connect Recover Thrive campaign.” The Connect Recover Thrive campaign reflects the Foundation’s ambitions for people to experience the joy of nature in the Peak District while connecting habitats, restoring nature, creating thriving landscapes and supporting an environment which contributes to the fight against climate change.

Student swims into international waters Barnsley College Public Services student, Emily Crossley, has been chosen to represent Great Britain’s U19s water polo women at this summer’s European Championships in Netanya, Israel.
The 17-year-old took up water polo from a very young age after following in her sister and uncle’s footsteps and joining the Rotherham Metro Water Polo Club. Emily will compete against some of the best water polo players on the international circuit. To prepare for the competition she has a gruelling training camp in Slovakia. Emily’s focus for the tournament is to improve on her previous placing at LEN U17s Women’s European Junior Water Polo Championships in Croatia, being competitive in all matches whilst gaining invaluable tournament play to help towards the transition to senior ladies’ water polo. Emily is part of the Barnsley Sports Academy within College and works on her strength with the coaching staff. This has enabled her to access an Elite Sports Performance Bursary to
fund aspects of her competition such as equipment and travel.
Emily, who studies Level 3 Uniformed Protective Services, said: “I’m looking forward to competing in a prestigious international event and gaining experience from it. I’m currently performing at an elite level for my age so this will be a great test of my abilities. My aim is to compete in future Commonwealth and Olympic games.
TAKING IT EASY IN THE GARDEN July is the month for you to get out and enjoy your garden whether it’s an open area in the country or a more compact urban space. The lazy, hazy days of summer are best spent enjoying the plants that you have lovingly nurtured and cared for over the past months that are now in full flower. You can also relax a little … the grass may grow slightly too long, plants may not be regularly deadheaded and the odd weed may show its head – but you will still love being outside in the garden and so will the wildlife. If you keep it simple and make your garden low maintenance but still looking beautiful you can spend longer relaxing in it.
“The College understands the demands to compete at a higher level and the support I have received has really helped me to pursue my goals in water polo.”
Key to a low maintenance garden is good plant planning. Use shrubs to add texture and create focal points. They offer all year round structure and require minimal care. You can also cover the ground with plants. Ensure that bare areas in your borders are filled with easy perennials so you don’t have to spend hours weeding. Also, plant some bulbs. They extend the garden’s season of interest with hardly any attention needed, coming up year after year. And, of course, plant the right plant in the right place. Always ensure that you choose plants that are suited to your garden’s soil type, location and size.
Barnsley Sports Academy offers fantastic facilities and a team of expert and specialist coaches supporting talented sports performers in any discipline. Academies include Football, Rugby, Netball, Basketball, Esports, Cricket, Refereeing and an Individual Athlete Academy. Detective agency
Today, Katie Landsborough has attended the closing ceremony of Police Now’s National Detective Programme academy, as she has completed her initial training to become a Detective Constable. The 14-week training academy, which began in March, equipped participants with the core policing and leadership skills required in modern investigative work. Participants will now be permanently deployed into their respective police forces to continue the two-year programme, where they will further develop their leadership and investigative skills to play an integral role in solving crimes. Katie, who joins South Yorkshire Police via the programme, has been sharing her ongoing experience of Police Now’s academy over the last 14 weeks.
If you have a lawn then hang on to it – for wildlife benefits, the fun of a picnic and simply the feel of it, but you could consider reducing the overall size of it by keeping a small area of short grass in the most formal area of the garden but letting other areas grow long. You can also experiment with different frequencies of cut, maybe just once a fortnight, while some ‘wilder’ areas could be left un-mown between March and September. You can even add interest with wildflower plug plants. If you are growing your own veg then plant out runner beans that you sowed in pots or trays last month. Runner beans are one of the easiest crops to grow, bearing masses of long, sweet-tasting beans all summer long. Push strong tall supports – bamboo canes or hazel – into the ground sloping inwards so they can be tied at the top. Plant one plant per cane about 15cm apart and tie each one loosely to the support. Water well and pinch out the tops once they outgrow the canes. ‘Scarlet Emperor’ has bright red flowers and a heavy crop and is a favourite heritage variety that has been grown in Britain for centuries; ‘White Lady’ has pure white flowers and is a reliable heavy cropper with stringless, tender pods with white seeds; and ‘Painted Lady’ is a Victorian variety that is grown for its pretty bicoloured red and white flowers and its large crop of tender, flavoursome beans. Summer is progressing and as the RHS says … this is often one of the hottest months of the year and a great time to sit out and enjoy your garden. Keep plants looking good by regularly dead-heading, and you'll enjoy a longer display of blooms. Make sure you keep new plants well watered, using grey water where possible, and hoe off weeds, which thrive in the sunshine. Top three jobs this month – dead head bedding plants and repeat flowering perennials to ensure continuous flowering; care for houseplants whilst on holiday; and water tubs and new plants if dry but be water wise.

Despite a dark sky, a damp pitch and following an evening of team member hen night celebrations the Oughtibridge Women again showed energy and enthusiasm in their latest home game. Fielding first, wickets by Captain Tania, Hayley and Sian, a maiden over for VP and some tight fielding kept Hallam’s score within reach. Oughtibridge then went on to show some solid batting and a commitment to racking up those singles, producing a comfortable win against a fabulous team from Hallam. Job Vacancies

SHEFFIELD'S Adam Ellis admits he was "over the moon" to book his place in the 2022 Speedway European Championship Series. The reigning British Champion was called up to Saturday's Challenge qualifier in Krsko, Slovenia - and secured the top five finish required. He finished on nine points with two wins and three thirds - leaving him one single point ahead of five other riders on eight. It means Ellis will now take place in the Four Round Series and he's looking forward to the challenge that lies ahead. He said: "It was kind of one of my goals for this season to be honest.

Stocksbridge Rugby Union Football Club are delighted to announce the appointment of Senior Men’s Head Coach Andrew Lawrence. He will succeed the recently retired Andy Tyers in the role. very impressive 41 points, that included two birdies in his round. Brian Dobb (16) and Harrison McHale (8) both finished with 38 points, but Brian took second place on countback. The Golf Club's League Team played at home to Lees Hall. The match finished 4-4, which keeps the team on track for promotion to Division 4. There seems to be a lot of appetite within the club to push forward as one club. We have new captains, vice captains, team managers and great coaching staff in place. With quite a number of last season's Colts coming through which is an exciting prospect for the Club.” Andy’s selection follows the appointments of Adam Firth 1st Team Captain, Sam Whittaker, 1st Team Vice, Dawn Woodcock, 1st Team Manager, Chris Legget 2nd Team Captain, Jonathan Gill 2nd Team Vice, Craig Loxley 2nd Team Manager. Stocksbridge will play in Yorkshire 4 and South Yorkshire Merit Table for the 2022/23 season which is the 60th Anniversary of the Club. Low-scoring games with mixed results Handsworth 1st XI 66 all out (J Newton 3-7, L Grayson 2-9, R Marsden 2-14, A Hibbert 2-24) Stocksbridge 1st XI 68-1 (B Cherry 34*, A Hirst 22*)
Stocksbridge 1st XI travelled to Handsworth looking to make it seven wins from seven. Handsworth won the toss and elected to field first, after scoring a mammoth 398 the weekend before. The 1st knew they had to have a good start as Handsworth came into the game full of confidence. However, the 1st were the team to beat at the moment and got into their work straight away. Joe Hibbert produced a run out in the opening overs to start proceedings. Opening pair Andy Hibbert and Rich Marsden bowled superbly well for the opening spell and gave nothing away. The Handsworth innings never got going due to this with the pair using the new ball effectively well. Hibbert and Marsden picked up two wickets each in the process. Liam Grayson and Jack Newton kept up the pressure and both back each other well from either end. Newton picked up three wickets and Grayson two, to complete the misery for Handsworth in their first innings. The home side were bowled out for 66. A brilliant first innings performance from the 1st XI in the field and with the bowl.

Openers Ben Cherry and Matt Price took to the crease and the pair got into their work and began to chase down the score. Price was unfortunately removed for 9 after a decent ball. Andy Hirst joined Cherry and the pair ticked the score along really well and put any bad ball away to the boundary. Cherry looked in great touch and carried on his form from the week before after scoring 96. Hirst was brillIant from the other end and both saw the 1st XI over the line within 12 overs. Cherry finishing on 34 and Hirst 22 to complete a brilliant nine wicket victory to keep the 1st XI 2nd in the table. They entertain Barnsley Woolley Miners on Saturday at Bracken Moor. Stocksbridge 2nd XI 83 all out v Houghton Main 2nd XI 100 all out Stocksbridge 2nds looked to continue their superb form and title challenge, with Houghton Main the visitors this weekend. Stocksbridge fielded the first, looking to restrict the visitors to a low total. Captain Thwaites and newcomer Chris Lowe opened the bowling and both started well. It was Thwaites who made the breakthrough, bowling opener Shahid for 0. Thwaites continued to tear through the top order, picking up 3 early wickets and leaving Houghton Main floundering at 2-3. Mohammad As-
gher provided some well needed resistance for Houghton Main, playing a number of aggressive strokes on his way to 45. Stocksbridge continued to bowl well and looked well on top. James Hague picked up wickets at regular intervals throughout the middle overs and Chris Lowe eventually picked up 2 wickets, which he more than deserved. Jack Murfin also picked up a late wicket as Houghton Main were bowled out for a total of just 100. James Hague picked up figures of 4-44, Chris Thwaites with 3-21. Stocksbridge were looking to climb to the top of the table and were firmly in the driving seat with only 100 to chase down. However, the reply with the bat was very disappointing, with wickets falling all too regularly. Hussain claimed 4 early wickets for the visitors, leaving Stocksbridge struggling at 26-4. Ant Siddall provided some much needed resistance, before eventually holing out for 28. Unfortunately, Siddall was one of only 2 batsmen to reach double figures and Stocksbridge crumbled to a dismal 83 all out. A very disappointing defeat after being in such a strong position. The 2nds will look to bounce back positively with a double weekend of action next week, including a cup quarter final on Sunday.
