Local MP Miriam Cates has called for urgent improve ments to a new bus ser vice that has recently been launched between Stocks bridge and Sheffield.

The new 57 'Stocksbridge Flyer' was launched by Stage coach on the 2nd October to connect Stocksbridge and the Upper Don Valley with Hills borough and the city centre, replacing the previous 57 and the SupertramLink buses.

Since then Miriam Cates, the MP for Penistone and Stocks bridge, has been inundated with dozens of reports from constituents who have been left stranded when buses haven’t turned up, or have witnessed buses failing to stop because the vehicle is already full.

Calling for action to address the problems with the new route, Mrs Cates said: "The recent changes to the Stage coach bus services in Stocks bridge and the Upper Don Valley have resulted in severe disruption for passengers. When I met with Stagecoach recently they assured me that the new 57 ‘Stocksbridge Flyer’ would be more reliable than the previous service, but this is clearly not the case.

"Local residents rely on this service to get to work, school, hospital appointments etc. and without these buses our communities are cut off. I know there are also problems with other local services, in cluding the withdrawal of the 135 service connecting resi dents in Chapeltown, High Green and Grenoside.”

"I will continue to do every thing I can to put pressure on those who run and fund our bus services. In recent days I have contacted both Stage coach and the Mayor Oliver Coppard to feed back the problems that constituents have shared with me and ask for urgent action to address them. I will also be meeting with the Secretary of State for Transport to raise these is sues and ask for more help for South Yorkshire to improve its Bus Services Improvement Plan.”

SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES AFFECTED BY SUICIDE

Children and young people who’ve lost loved ones to suicide help develop support for other families

Children, young people and families from South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw who have been bereaved by suicide have developed a new toolkit to support families like their own in the aftermath of losing someone to suicide.

South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw has a higher suicide rate than the England average, and the impact of suicide is complex and the ef fects are profound; not only on the family

and friends of the person who has died but also on the wider community. In recogni tion of the importance that those who are bereaved from or affected by suicide receive the support they need, partners across the health and social care system are working together to develop a consistent approach which is informed by the experiences of those living in South Yorkshire and Basset law.

The toolkit is available on the Chilypep web site here: chilypep.org.uk. Copies of it will be given to children, young people and families following a bereavement by suicide.

Funding will be used to deliver new and upgrade existing walking paths and mountain bike trails, extending the area of the site which can be ac cessed and making the whole site more accessible to people of all ages and abilities. With a new visitor cen tre and bike hub, plus information boards, event space and improved boundaries, Parkwood Springs will be strengthened as a destination in its own right.

The bids are currently being as sessed by the Department for Lev elling Up, Housing and Communi ties and a decision is expected to be reached in the coming months.

Neill Schofield, Joint Chair of the Friends of Parkwood Springs, said:

“We think the City Council's bid is coherent, and a really well-consid ered plan. Parts of the site need sub stantial work to remove the legacy of previous uses and to make them safe. There needs to be very sub stantial improvements to access, and a range of other improvements to the site. Taken together these ac tions will make Parkwood Springs an attractive destination for people from near and far."

A first ever Menopause festi val – ‘Meno Fest 22’ – has been launched to support health and care staff and encourage work places to become menopause friendly.

Nearly 34,000 health and care staff across South Yorkshire are going through the Menopause and often additional support and awareness could make a differ ence to those colleagues.

The festival, held on Saturday 8 October at Bramall Lane Confer ence Centre Sheffield, is part of NHS South Yorkshire’s commit ment to increase the awareness

of Menopause and highlight the support available for the NHS and Social Care workforce across the region. With support from trained menopause advocates by Henpicked ‘Menopause in the workplace’ programme, the day will have a range of speakers from menopause advocates and other specialists and will host a variety of stalls from local businesses.

On Monday night a man slept in the graveyard at Christ Church Stocksbridge. His name is Tim Renshaw and he is the head of the Archer Project under the Cathedral in Sheffield. He is sleeping out in 16 churchyards in Sheffield, through October, sometimes with homeless friends, to raise awareness of the problem of homelessness.

Rev Ian Lucraft, minister at Christ Church, said; “The people who shared this event went away very moved by the stories of Tim’s friends and colleagues. We are fearful that homelessness may increase in coming months, and it is important that we support those who work among home less people and speak up for the needs of people who are affected.”

SNOW BUS OF 57 FIASCO THIS WINTER AND OAP PASSES OBSELETE

No buses or reduced buses for anyone needing to go and see a doctor here in Deepcar Surgery, or for people who rely on the bus which has a bus stop right outside Deepcar Medical Centre.

“On the buses” - bring back Reg Varney and Olive because they could run a better bus service than the lemons who have caused this bus service fiasco and get rid of all bus contracts and re-nationalise, so that there will be no handing back bus contracts then once its re-nationalised, which has part caused this bus fiasco. Bad management for not recruiting more bus drivers in the first place, but why are they short of bus drivers anyway? Have bus drivers left because of poor pay, for one or bad management? (for bus driver shortage fiasco). So if its the latter, the first lot to go and lose their jobs is management ans start again by re-nationalising and a clean slate and not those who have got our bus service into this mess. Putting it mildly - this bus fiasco - what do you think Reg Varney would have said on the

Over the years, when it snows, the first bus out of Sheffield gets cancelled without warning, thats our 57 bus service!

Due in Winter when it snows, it only takes 1 inch of snow to stop buses going up the hill at Carr Road and Armitage Road to Stubbin. What does our local Councillors and our MP Miriam Cates think? For so long we have been told by government of all colours about global warming and air pollution and to get out of our cars and use public transport? What does our MP Miriam Cates make of this bus fiasco?

The planning application pass for Hollin Busk said it had a good service? Sheffield Council should note Carr Road and school was already congested with cars? Like Wood Royd Road.

People on council committees planning should note no houses should be built around this area of Deepcar because it will increase air pollution, increase more cars if you pass any future planning for houses to be built here. Politicians like Miriam Cates will tell we are in a mess and we need to get our economy growing by building more houses but in our area here we do not have the infrastructure, ie Roads, ie Wood Royd Road, Armitage Road and Carr Road all congested.

Before this bus fiasco, this place had SL1 service, now a reduced half hour bus service and the forgotten railway line. No wonder our roads of North Sheffield are Chock a Block.

We must have one of the worst public transport services in the country here.

WHOLLY UNACCEPTABLE TIMETABLE AND RUNNING OF A NOW NEAR VANISHED SERVICE TO STOCKSBRIDGE/DEEPCAR

Dear David Rich (Commercial Manager, Stagecoach Yorkshire) [cc Miriam Cates MP, LookLocal newspaper editor & staff]

Stagecoach’s new massively reduced ‘service’ to Stocksbridge/Deepcar is wholly unacceptable in both timetable and running.

Anything but the “Stocksbridge Flyer”, half of the buses have suddenly been re-badged 57A to go a hugely time-wasting, giant dogleg uphill through narrow, car-parked-blocked roads from Oughtibridge to Worrall, the traffic-calmed Wisewood estate and down Dykes Hall Road. Most of this route is unsuitable for bus traffic.

We need THREE BUSES PER HOUR ALONG THE VALLEY FLOOR, not one! If the 57A is to be permanent -- and not a stop-gap until the forthcoming 59 service from Hillsborough to Worrall and the top of Oughtibridge is established -this needs to be ADDITIONAL to the two per hour 57s, not a substitute for one of them. We previously had SIX BUSES PER HOUR: 3 SL1s, 2 SL1As and a 57 -- before you cut one each of the SL1s and SL1As. That was still four per hour; double what you ‘provide’ now.

Still worse, you are totally failing even to deliver your appalling new timetable. At the Stocksbridge Library down stop yesterday, I met a teacher at Stocksbridge Junior School trying to get home from work. She had WAITED FOR OVER TWO HOURS FOR ANY BUS TOWARDS SHEFFIELD!!! When, after 7pm at long last a bus came, it was badged ‘000 not in service’ and missed out all of the route from Nanny Hill, leaving people through Deepcar still longer stranded.

Earlier, at an up stop on Carr Road, Deepcar, I had waited 45 minutes for any bus, until the 57A came together with the 57 -- just as had occurred the previous day in the afternoon (Sunday: the first day of your new ‘service’).

Your drivers complain they cannot do the route in the time allotted, so you are going to need an additional bus for this route anyway.

They also complain of zero communication from/ to managers, which is why they have been leaving to join other bus companies -- not least to Globe.

Another big problem is the last bus back from Sheffield is now a ridiculously early 22.50pm, with no late bus back from Middlewood, leaving tram passengers stranded. Previously, there was the 23.50pm SL1 from the tram terminus, which also picked up passengers of the 23.15pm 57 that terminated at Oughtibridge. The upshot is that nights out in town are now mostly impossible, given a taxi back costs £30.

Then there’s the near vanished ‘service’ on Sundays and evenings of a ridiculous one per hour. This is a further full halving of ‘service’ levels for Sundays, and with the timings it means I can no longer go to see and feed my mum at her care home on Sundays.

‘justify’ axing the whole tramlink (ha! -- they rarely ‘linked’) concept. This has forced many passengers to car share, or to make more use of or buy a second car for their household.

Stocksbridge/Deepcar residents have had it with Stagecoach, which needs either to to make significant amends or get out of ‘serving’ our area altogether.

SYSTEMATIC NON-RUNNING OF THE 57 FROM STOCKSBRIDGE, AND LATE-RUNNING 57As.

The 17.52pm 57 from Stocksbridge did not run, and the 19.58 57A from Sheffield was 35 minutes late at Carr Road Deepcar on the admission of the driver. This bus came back as a 57A whereas the 57 did not run (as confirmed by passengers waiting at Stocksbridge and who later got on the 57A, who had been waiting for the 57).

This is a now established pattern. It’s far more often the 57A that you see than the 57. So Stagecoach is not providing its Stocksbridge Flyer, never mind at two an hour. It is often running one Stocksbridge Crawler once a hour and that’s it. The service Stagecoach hails the Stocksbridge Flyer is largely a mirage. Stagecoach cares only about Worrall -- that is, getting their fares -- and could not give an (expletive deleted) about Stocksbridge/Deepcar.

What is even more appalling here is that Stagecoach has received lots of Government COVID money up to March 2023, so this money is not using this to maintain services but to cream off the taxpayer.

Now, according to the SY Mayoral Authority, buses out here would not be subsidised unless it were uneconomic to provide even just two buses an hour, so it appears Stagecoach has pruned to this bare bone so that come next March it will try to make out that even this somehow is not commercially viable so as to apply for funding.

Stagecoach need to be told where to get off or stripped of permission to run a service out to Stocksbridge/ Deepcar.

Bus reliability unacceptable

The severe reliability issues we have seen on the new 57/57a (Stocksbridge-Sheffield) bus route are completely unacceptable. I have been in regular contact with Stagecoach at both Managing Director level and with those managing operations at the North Sheffield depot over the last few weeks and months. Much of this communication has been focused on pressing Stagecoach to deal with cancellations and delays.

The incompetence of Stagecoach in routing knows few bounds. Just as I warned you, your absurd proposed Langsett Avenue dogleg is impossible, owing to its 1 in 3 gradient in its lower portion. Sure enough, your drivers say the buses bottom out (scrape) at the foot of this hill as it hits the level ground of the main road at Middlewood, and hence you had to axe this routing -- pointless as it was anyway, and an insult to passengers.

If, as it appears Stagecoach is by deception cynically pitching, there has to be subsidy to run more than two buses an hour, then let’s have this out in the open. If the 57 route needs subsidy to be commercially viable, let’s see Stagecoach make a case for this. Stagecoach owes a big apology for running the ‘service’ into the ground with relentless cuts and then systematically cancelling a third to twothirds of all remaining SL1/SL1a buses so as to force commuters in particular onto the 57 and thereby

It is clear that reliability has remained unacceptable since the timetable change and that is why I intend to meet with the Managing Director of Stagecoach Yorkshire as soon as possible. This will also be an opportunity to raise specific concerns given to me by local residents about the new timetable and route.

I have also written to the South Yorkshire Mayor to ask that he uses the Bus Recovery Grant funding to support critical services like the 57. The geographical isolation of Stocksbridge, Deepcar, Oughtibridge and Wharncliffe Side make this support even more important.

To increase the sustainability of the route in the longterm, we need to get more people using buses – but this is only possible if the current service is reliable and frequent. I will continue to challenge Stagecoach as the current situation simply cannot continue.

Stocksbridge ended the 2021/22 season as Champions of Divi sion 4 of the Sheffield & District Squash League. The new sea

cock playing at number 3, win ning his match 3-1 but Mark Wingfield losing 3-0. The next matches saw Ed Walker at 1 and Alex Timmins-Jones at 2. Ed showed his class by beating their number 1 player 3-0. This meant that Alex needed to get at least 2 games to secure the victory but unfortunately went down 3-1. This meant that the tie was drawn, with the games at 7-7. Therefore the rules state that the winner is the team with the highest aggregate points over the fixture. Further disap pointment was to be had when the count came in at 177-174 in favour of Hallamshire to secure the 4 bonus points.

Despite the close loss, it was against one of the league favou rites which shows that Stocks bridge will be very competitive in Division 3.

League Points System

There are 4 matches which are each best of 5 games. The play ers are seeded and will play the matching seed from the op ponents team. 15 points are needed to win each game (or by 2 clear points, if the scores are level at 15 all) with a league point awarded for each game won. The winning team is the one with the most games (or if a tie, the most aggregated points), with 4 bonus points for the win ning team. For example, we won the match against Fulwood 12 games to 1. Therefore, we re ceive 16 points to their 1.

We hold an open night on Thurs day 7pm to 9pm at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre and new players are always welcome. It’s £3.50 for members and £4.50 for non-members.

Julia Johnson put in an excellent performance to claim first place in the ladies over55 age category at the Morley 10k. Julia’s time for the dis tance was 45-12. At the Manchester Half Marathon Matthew Robinson grabbed third place in the men’s over55 category in 1-23-05. Martin Ball was fifth in the men’s over50 cat egory in 1-21-59 and Andrew Hep penstall had a great run to finish in 1-19-39. Gareth Irvine was first over40 man at the Run for Wildlife 5k. There was more success for Penistone at the Rother Valley 10k where Johnathan Bentley was 5th overall and first in the men’s over50 age category in 3846. Junior club member Flynn Rog ers took part in the Sheffield Fun Run and placed first in his age category in a time of 10-49 for the 2.5k run. On the fells two Penistone runners competed in the Langdale Fell race up in the lake district. First back was Damian Kilpin in 2-41-50 closely followed by Phil Montgomery who finished in 2-45-53. On the Parkrun scene David Needham achieved the

milestone of 300 Parkruns whilst taking part in the Barnsley event.

George Parr was the first man back at the Penistone Parkrun, at the Wan stead Flats Parkrun Malcolm Rose broke the men’s over65 course record in 19-46. Lee Nash had a good run to place second at the Goole Parkrun in 18-21. Monty Hallam was second at the Barnsley junior Parkrun in 9-30 and Lauren Lees was second female at the Dukeries junior Parkrun in 9-30 also.

stoCkbridge golfers suCCess

Gol F e RS from Stocks bridge Golf Club tast ed success with the J H Aitchison Trophy played at Pheonix Golf Club on 2 october. The competition is or ganised by the Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs and to get to the final, pairs of golfers must succeed in qualifying rounds at their own club. 25 Clubs from the area were represented at the final.

The two pairs that quali fied to represent Stocks bridge were Peter Bark er/ Glyn Stainforth and Jonathan Bradley/ Pete Westhead. The format for the final was a bet ter ball Stableford and the Stocksbridge golf ers managed an impres sive aggregate score of 85 points. Not only did the Stocksbridge golf ers win the main team trophy, Peter Barker and Glyn Stainforth also won the best individual pairs score with 44 points.

At the end of a long summer season of Med al competitions, Mick Shouler won the Medal Final at Stocksbridge Golf Club. To qualify for the final required members to have won a Saturday or Mid-Week Monthly Medal in either of the handicap divisions played through the sum mer. 28 Gents played in the final on 8 October and Mick, from Division 1 playing off a handicap of 10, won with a net 66, 2 shots clear of the field. The conditions were dry, but very windy, which made Mick's score all the more impressive.

Paul Blake (8) was the Division 1 runner-up with a net 68, with John Slodyczak (11) in third place with a net 71. The leading scorer in Divi sion 2 came from Nick Broomhead (14) with a net 68. Andrew Taylor (17) was second with a net 70 and Josh Shelley (17) was third with a net 71.

The final Mid-Week qual ifier for the Medal Final was played on 6 Octo ber, with Phil Jepson (8) winning Division 1 with a net 68. Jason Kenyon (4) was second with a net 70 and Eric Wilkin son (8) third with a net 72. Division 2 was led by Eddie Smith (21) with a net 68. Brian Dobb (14) was second with a net 72 and Joe Marsh (22) third with a net 72 as well, though with a worse back 9 score.

The Ladies Section at the Club also had a final to compete in on 9 Oc tober. This time it was the Ladies Stableford Fi nal. Liana O'Sullivan (4) was the winner with 26 points. Terri Moffett (26) and Hilja O'Sullivan (19) both scored 24 points, but Terri took second place on countback.

The Stocksbridge Bandits completed their 8th and final competition of the summer. Stuart Marsh (18) not only enjoyed

victory in the competi tion with 37 points, he scored a hole-in-one on the short par three 13th. Naz Hassan (16) was second with 36 points and Nick Broomhead (14) was third with 35 points. Nick's score was the same as Wayne Hirst (25), but he had a better back 9.

The Bandits competi tions are all part of a summer league table, with the players best 4 Stableford scores count ing. 38 players competed in the Bandits competi tions through the season and the overall winner was Brian Dobb with an aggregate score of 150 points. Stuart Marsh finished a close second with 149 points and Paul Ryan was third with 146 points.

Goole had made a very slow start to their season with 5 points from their 8 games and scoring a total of 4 goals.

Church arrived with tremendous away form, but they had just lost 2-5 at home to Emley.

Church returned to winning ways with a rather laboured win on the road. Goole had little of the ball and when they did, they did little in front of goal. Church on the other hand will be pleased with a 2-goal win and a clean sheet.

“It was a great reac tion from Wednes day night’s defeat, travelling to Goole and getting a two-nil victory.

Our keeper Harry Ambler (pictured) made a vital oneon-one save with ten minutes remaining in the first half, he took a good clatter ing but it was a class save and he’s kept us in it at one-nil.

Goole’s a hard place to go to, where they are in the table’s mis leading, they deserve to be a lot higher.

The biggest thing to day was making sure we got three points and making sure that

there was a reaction from Wednesday night.”

STEELS CRUSH SORRY OWLS

SHEFFIELD trail by 12 points at the halfway stage of the 2022 Premiership Grand Final.

The Tru Plant Tigers were beaten 51-39 by Belle Vue in the first leg at the National Speedway Stadium on Mon day.

Three of the opening four races ended with a 3-3 but the hosts were able to open up a ten point lead with four advantages between Heats Five and Ten.

Tobiasz Musielak and Justin Sedgmen combined for 4-2s in both Heats Six and Nine though to limit further dam age.

Robert Lambert got the bet ter of Jack Holder in a stun ning Heat 11 battle before Adam Ellis picked up his first race win in a 4-2 with Sedg men in Heat 12.

With the visitors reduced to five men with Jye Etheridge and Charles Wright crashing out, Sheffield took full advan tage of having an extra rider in Heat 14 with their only 5-1 of the night.

But Lambert and Brady Kurtz pulled off maximums of their own in Heats 13 and 15 to es tablish that 12 point first leg advantage.

Stocksbridge PS 3-0 Cleethorpes Town

Stocksbridge bounced back from their FA Cup exit with their best performance of the season against league high flyers Cleethorpes Town. Two goals in the first half put Steels firmly in con trol and in the second half the team blunted the Owls hopes of a comeback with an excellent solid team per formance and then Lewis Macaskill’s first goal of the

club in stoppage time put ting icing on the cake.

Steels manager made one change from the team from midweek, with new signing Leigh Whelan going straight in the side. Steels were still without the injured Elliot Murray (3 weeks at least), Cody Prior (6 – 8 weeks) Jordan Lemon (10 days), Ross Goodwin is hoping to be back for Lincoln United and to comply our missing players Zack Reynolds was missing due to illness, so Baker made his home debut as well. On the bench was our other recent signing Keegan Townrow.

To a man this was our best performance all season and the trick now is to keep the same standard every game. If we can then we are go ing to be very hard to play against. The result was our first home win of the sea son and only our 2nd of the season. We move up to 15th but besides Worksop Town we have at least 2 games in hand on every team above us. A 10 day break now will hopefully see at least 2 play ers return from injury/ill ness.
