GUARAFLEX R WATERPROOFING SYSTEMS GUARAFLEX R TANKING SYSTEM PRODUCT SCOPE AND SUMMARY OF CERTIFICATE This Certificate relates to Guaraflex R Tanking System, based on a polymer-modified mastic asphalt. The system is for use in internal and external waterproofing and damp-proof applications. KEY FACTORS ASSESSED Weathertightness — the system will resist the passage of moisture into the building (see section 5). Resistance to mechanical damage — the system will accept the limited foot traffic and loads associated with the installation and maintenance of the system and the effects of thermal or other minor movement likely to occur in practice without damage (see section 6). Durability — under normal service conditions the system will provide an effective barrier to the transmission of liquid water and water vapour for the design life of the structure in which it is incorporated (see section 8).

Zurich Building Guarantee Technical Manual 2007 In the opinion of the BBA, Guaraflex R Tanking System, when installed and used in accordance with this Certificate, satisfies the requirements of the Zurich Building Guarantee Technical Manual, Section 3, Substructure, Sub-section Basements.
General This Certificate relates to Guaraflex R Tanking System comprising Guaraflex PR polymer-modified mastic asphalt waterproofing. The system is for use in internal and external waterproofing and damp-proof applications. The product is laid using the traditional techniques for mastic asphalt described in the relevant Clauses of BS 8218 : 1998 and the Certificate holder’s instructions. Guaraflex PR is manufactured in the UK and marketed by the Certificate holder, and may be delivered to site in either hot charge or block form. Page 2 of 12
Technical Specification 1 Description 1.1 Guaraflex PR is a waterproofing grade polymer-modified mastic asphalt manufactured by blending bitumen, graded aggregates, filler and polymer using conventional techniques. 1.2 Other products used with Guaraflex PR include: • Guarafelt CP — 2 mm thick, polymer-modified glassfibre mat reinforced bitumen membrane • Guarafelt CP Super — 4 mm thick, polymer-modified glassfibre mat reinforced bitumen membrane. 1.3 Typical Guaraflex R Tanking specifications, descriptions and uses are detailed in Figure 1. Quality control 1.4 Quality control checks are performed on incoming raw materials, during production and on the finished material.
2 Delivery and site handling 2.1 Guaraflex PR is supplied in hot charge (molten) form, delivered to site in purpose-built transporters. The product information is supplied on the relevant delivery notes with each consignment. The manufacturer’s material safety data sheet should be consulted prior to discharging and handling the molten product. 2.2 Alternatively, the product may be supplied in block form (similar to traditional mastic asphalt) with labels bearing the product type and name. Each block weighs approximately 16 kg and should be stored in the same manner as traditional mastic asphalt. 2.3 The bitumen primer is supplied in 5 litre and 25 litre drums. The product is classified under The Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply) Regulations 2002 (CHIP3) and bears the appropriate hazard warning label. The flashpoint and hazard classification are given in Table 1. 2.4 Guaraflash and Guarafelt membranes are supplied in rolls and should be stored on end on a clean, level surface away from heat and protected from inclement weather.

Assessment and Technical Investigations The following is a summary of the technical investigations carried out on the Guaraflex R Tanking System.
Design Considerations 3 Use 3.1 Guaraflex R Tanking System is satisfactory for use as below ground waterproofing on substrates of; concrete, brickwork, blockwork or masonry constructions, or as a damp-proof membrane for solid floors (see Figure 1). 3.2 The membrane is compatible with the substrate listed in section 3.1 and is resistant to those chemicals likely to occur in normal practice. If doubt arises on the compatibility with other materials, the advice of the manufacturer should be sought.

4 Practicability of installation The product can be installed readily by operatives experienced with this type of product.
5 Weathertightness 5.1 Test data confirm that the system will adequately resist the passage of water and water vapour to the inside of the building and so enable a structure to comply with the relevant requirements of the national Building Regulations. 5.2 When used in the systems described, it will provide a weathertight layer capable of accepting minor structural movements without leakage.
6 Resistance to mechanical damage 6.1 Tests indicate that the system can accommodate, without damage, the thermal movement likely to occur in practice and the limited foot traffic and light concentrated loads associated with installation and maintenance operations. 6.2 Reasonable care is required, however, to avoid prolonged loading by sharp objects, (see the Technical Investigations section Table for Performance tests).
7 Maintenance As the product is confined within a structure and has suitable durability, maintenance is not required.
8 Durability Guaraflex R, when fully protected and subjected to normal service conditions, will provide an effective barrier to the transmission of liquid water and water vapour for the design life of the structure in which it is incorporated.
Installation 9.1 Surfaces must be dry, clean, and free from sharp projections and concrete nibs. 9.2 Guaraflex R Tanking System must be installed in accordance with the relevant requirements of CP 102 : 1973, Section 2, BS 8102 : 1990 and the manufacturer’s instructions. 9.3 Concrete substrates must be wood float or shutter finish and free from large voids and sharp projections such as concrete nibs. Any abrupt irregularities greater than 3 mm must be removed or filled prior to application. 9.4 New concrete should be well compacted and finished, preferably by power floating and power trowelling, without excessive laitance, to a dense, smooth finish free from defects. Concrete toppings/screeds should be properly formulated, applied and compacted. They should be bonded to the substrate and have a wood-floated finish with minimum laitance. 9.5 A minimum curing period of 28 days is normally allowed before installing the product on new concrete substrates. 9.6 Substrates should be free from physical defects such as cracks. Small surface defects can be filled with a proprietary mortar. 9.7 The surface must be dry, clean and free from loose particles, paint, grease and oil, or other contaminants which may affect the application of the product. 9.8 When application is made to an old substrate the advice of the Certificate holder must be sought. 9.9 Installation of the waterproofing layer should be carried out using the techniques for laying mastic asphalt described in the relevant Clauses of BS 8218 : 1998. Where not controlled by hot charge delivery, advice on the laying temperature should be obtained from the Certificate holder. 9.10 If required, Guaraflex PR waterproofing, can be applied over Guaraflex CP or Guaraflex CP Super felt isolating membranes. 9.11 Gauges should be used to ensure the correct thickness of Guaraflex PR and to provide a bonding edge between adjacent bays of asphalt. 9.12 The membrane should be protected against damage from construction activities as soon as possible after application. The vertical membrane can be protected with a brick or block wall. Pipe detailing [see Figure 1(7.b)] 9.13 Pipes manufactured from coated or uncoated cast-iron mild steel or pitch fibre pipes are cleaned and brushed prior to painting with a primer coat. The primed pipe is sleeved with two coats of Guaraflex PR tanking. 9.14 The Guaraflex PR sleeve portion of the pipe to be built into the structure must project 75 mm before further Guaraflex PR is applied.

9.15 Guaraflex PR Tanking is then applied up to the Guaraflex PR sleeve which is warmed and cleaned to ensure a sound joint. Additional coats are applied as a collar over the Guaraflex PR and pipe (clipped if necessary) and finished with an application of a two-coat angle fillet. 9.16 A protecting wall is constructed if the tanking is external or a loading wall or slab if the tanking is internal.
10 Repair Any damage to the system must be repaired as soon as possible and before the application of the surface protection. The system may be repaired by removing the damaged area and reinstating the system to the original specification. The advice of the Certificate holder should be sought.
Technical Investigations 11 Tests The BBA obtained samples of the Guaraflex PR asphaltic cement and Guaraflex PR for testing. The results of tests on the asphaltic cement and tests for the general physical properties and service performance on Guaraflex PR are given in Tables 2, 3 and 4 respectively.

12 Investigations 12.1 Factory visits were performed to examine the manufacturing and quality control procedures at the production location. 12.2 A user survey was carried out to assess the product’s performance in service.
