HARRY & MEGHAN UNDER FIRE

‘Didn’t take them long to start cashing in’ The Sussexes face backlash for first ‘paid gig’

H

aving made the monumental decision to leave the royal family, we had thought that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle would lie low for a while. But last week, the pair made their first public appearance together since “Megxit”. And it wasn’t just any old ribbon-cutting – the couple accepted an invitation to speak at a summit hosted by leading financial services firm JP Morgan Chase in Miami, Florida. It is thought that the couple may have earned around £400k for the appearance, which took place at South Beach’s glitzy 1 Hotel. Meghan is said to have spoken about her “love for her husband”, before introducing Harry to the stage, where he spoke about mental health and using therapy to deal with the grief of losing his mother. It may be an understatement to say some royal fans were outraged by the notion that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were already making money off

theirnot-so-royal-any-morestatus. PRguruMarkBorkowskisaid,“The worry is, how many of these type of gigs are there going to be? How often can Harry play the card about his mental health? For JP Morgan, it’s an J-Lo and A-Rod extraordinary ‘get’. They had dinner with them clearly have the money to afford them, but Harry and Meghan need to avoid being perceived as tacky.” One online commenter wrote, “Didn’t take long for them to start cashing in on their name”, while another said they were, “commercialising an institution that didn’t belong to them”. And our insider tells us Meghan is already lining up Harry’s next “emotional” speech. “Meghan is really proud

fork out on pricey skincare and weekly facials, we’re told, “He was so pleased with the results, he’s even researching and considering a hair transplant – all with Meghan’s approval and encouragement, of course.” “The Duke insists he’s not trying to make himself something he’s not,” our source explains. “Everything he’s doing is subtle, minimal, and classy. It’s really given his ego a boost. He feels empowered standing next to Meghan now.”

of Harry for being so open about his mental health struggles, and thinks it’s the key to them getting support from the public,” we’re told. “But she’s also excited for them to build a base in Los Angeles, and all the money they are making right now is helping them with those plans.” Prince Harry is rumoured to have discussed working with another finance firm Goldman Sachs in a multi-million pound deal. However, the pair reportedly turned down the chance to present the Best Picture award at the Oscars. “There is definitely a feeling that Meghan needs to be reined-in slightly, with all the plans

that she has for them both in their new celebrity careers. It was Meghan who was pushing for them to appear at theOscars, butHarry’sadvisorsput theirfoot down and said it was much too soon for them to be making an appearance at a televised, celeb event.” Continuing their starry visit to the US, the couple reportedly had dinner with J-Lo and Alex Rodriguez. Jennifer was overheard giving the couple and baby Archie an open invitation to their Miami house. Our insider tells us, “They clicked immediately as a foursome, and have talked and texted plenty of times since. J-Lo’s been a great sounding board about practical matters, as well as emotional issues whenever Meghan’s needed to vent. She’s promised to be available 24/7 to Meghan, like she is for all her friends.” With their earning power said to be “unlimited” and A-listers lining up to be pals, it’s no wonder that our source says, “It’s validated their decision to ditch the monarchy and pursue this exciting new life.” n

If he’s spending time with J-Lo and other Hollywood greats, it seems Harry feels a change is required. We’re told, “Harry feels a need to step things up in terms of personal appearance, now he’s making a new life for himself. He’s determined to look the part alongside Meghan as they rub shoulders with impossibly beautiful people.” Harry is said to have recently visited a prestigious hair-loss clinic in London, undergoing a hair thickening treatment. Last week, series winners Kelvin Fletcher and Oti Mabuse found themselves at the centreof controversy, after being spotted making two late-night visits to two hotels together in as many days. First, Kelvin who’s been busy travelling up and down the country on the Strictly tour over the past month was pictured with Oti at 3.30am, heading into London’s Soho Sanctum hotel, where they joined other Strictly celebs and pro dancers for drinks. They apparently both left alone, but reconvened the following night at the Lincoln Plaza Hotelin London for another drinkingsesh. The story might have stopped there, but Kelvin’s wife Eliza

K, so it’s technically all about who wins a small, shiny bloke named Oscar, but really, everyone knows who the real winners are on the night: the best-dressed stars. And despite LA’s unusually soggy weather, this year’s A-listers delivered all the goods as they strutted down the red carpet at the Dolby Theatre in West Hollywood. Nominees Florence Pugh, Scarlett Johansson and Margot Robbie all proved you don’t need to actually score a trophy to make an impression. TV faves Mindy Kaling and Sandra Oh also pulled out all the stops – the latter

dazzling us with her Big Bird-goesglam super-frock. Best Actress winner Renée Zellweger played it cool and classic in off-the-shoulder white, while Saoirse Ronan and Gal Gadot clearly couldn’t decide what to wear so combined two dresses between them. Then, there was Emily Ratajkowski, who couldn’t tear herself away from the beach in time, so apparently came in her bikini and sarong. Yes, overall, it was another vintage year for the Academy Awards fash pack. And just like that, an army of stressed-out stylists get to keep their jobs for another 12 months. ■

Arg: hasn’t even proposed

with a runaway groom on the big day. “Arg hasn’t even proposed, and he feels that all of Gem’s planning has gotten way out of hand,” says an insider close to The GC. “He wants to be in a good space before he can even talk about marriage, but Gem feels as though time is against them and they need to hurryup. Arg tends to run away fromlife in times of panic – wheneverhe and Gem are in a bad place,he goes AWOL. At this point, his friends are worried that he’llbolt.” Gemma and Arg’s famously volatile relationship was seriously tested late last year, when Gem, 39, was forced to call emergency services amid fears that Arg,32, had overdosed. While Gem’s now reportedly supportingher

beau during his rehab stay, they’re not exactly on stable ground and, despite Gemma’s best intentions, we’re told her gung-ho approach to wedding planning could be the thing to end their romance for good. As heat reported last month, Gemma has even been thinking about booking the ceremony where Arg is staying in Thailand. “She’s like a woman possessed,”

says our source. “She’s asked her dad to set aside a budget for the big day, and isn’t expecting Arg to chip in as much as she is. It’s tradition for the father of the bride to foot most of the bill, so Arg has nothing to worry about. She’s said that all he needs to do is turn up and she’ll sort the rest. But that’s exactly the problem – Arg can’t guarantee that.” Better warn the caterers, Gem. ■ CHARLOTTE OLIVER

He’s still her chaperone and on the payroll, but that’s where it ends for now.” The singer has a history of dating younger men, including dancers Brahim Zalibat, then 23, and Timor Steffens, then 26, and model Kevin Sampaio, then 31. QUEEN’S GRANDSON TO DIVORCE It’s been a turbulent time for our beloved sovereign over the last year or so, what with Megxit and the Prince Andrew scandal. And the Queen was dealt another blow last week, after it was revealed that Peter and Autumn Phillips will divorce. Peter who is the son of Princess Anne and her first husband, Mark Phillips will have shared care of their two daughters, Savannah, nine, and Isla, seven. A statement released on their behalf read, “The decision to divorce and share custody came about after many months of discussions and, Not a annu horr

although sad, is an amicable one.” Peter, 42, and Autumn, 41, met in 2003, and married in 2008. Canadian native Autumn moved to the UK and gave up her Catholic faith to marry Peter, so that he could retain his right to the throne. Rumours had been circulating that Autumn was planning to relocate back to Canada, but the official statement stated firmly, “Both Peter and Autumn have remained in Gloucestershire to bring up their two children, where they have been settled for a number of years.” ■

Ahlamalik Williams has been part of Madonna’s tour since 2015, and they took their relationship to the next level last year. But now an insider tells us the backing dancer has had enough of “an increasingly off-the-rails” Madonna. “He’s told her they can still be friends and she’s still his boss, but it’s not working for him,” our source reveals. “She’s furious and was totally blindsided, because she’s used to being surrounded by people who do exactly what she tells them to.” The mum of six who performed in London last week after cancelling several shows due to an injury was pictured with Ahlamalik and her kids on holiday in December, but it seems things were short-lived for the couple. LIAM PAYNE

It’s safe to say that the 26 year old has been on a crazy journey since his One Direction days. Back then, he was – by his own admission – the responsible grandpa of the group. But he’s worked hard to change his look and vibe. See those tats? They scream, “I’m well hard,” while the abs say, “I have a gym membership, and I’m not afraid to use it.” Good effort, lad.

SPLASH NEWS; SHUTTERSTOCK

Last year, the dad of one landed his first underwear campaign – for Hugo Boss – and posed for some photos that were very raunchy indeed. He said at the time that he’d “worked [his] ass off” to get in tip-top shape, and he’s clearly still flaunting the results. No Payne, no gain, eh?

#37

He first found fame when he was very young – he was just 14 when he first auditioned for The X Factor. But if Cheryl was willing to overlook that, then so are we. Sure, Liam Payne was barely on the precipice of puberty when we first met, but these days, he’s all grown up. Seriously, check out that designer stubble – what a man.

JAMES BLUNT:

The singer will make you blub with his songs

J

and then pull you a pint, as Kay Ribeiro finds out

ames Blunt is a seriously busy man. Having just flown in from LA, he’s soon off to Manchester to do BBC Breakfast. It’s all part of a mind-boggling three-year cycle that sees him writing and recording for a year, promoting for six months, and then embarking on a 18 month tour – before repeating it all over again.

Not only that, but in the gaps, he’s making film cameos, pulling pints (yep, he’s a pub landlord now), taking down Twitter trolls in a hilariously dry fashion, and spending precious downtime with his wife Sofia and their two children. See? B-u-s-y. Fortunately, the 45 year old has still got time to chat to us about life, love and Once Upon A Mind, his most personal album to date. Where his previous hits You’re Beautiful and Goodbye My Lover provided a soundtrack for

the breaking-up and making-up of lovebirds the world over, his beautiful, gut-wrenching new track Monsters will resonate with anyone who’s lost a parent or loved one. In it, he addresses the impending loss of his father, who has stage-4 chronic kidney disease, and is saying goodbye to him. If you haven’t seen the video, which features Mr Blunt Sr, you should do so immediately. But make sure you’re wearing heavy-duty waterproof mascara. You have been warned…

And we also have Fox & Pheasant we brew our own which is our biggest seller, and it’s fantastic. And then I move onto red wine, then I move on to vodka. And then I’d probably move on to Jägerbombs.

Well, the premise of the movie isaboutcelebritiesdoinganything for money. And so they called me up and offered me money. And so I said, “Sure!” Did you already know Steve? I had met him a coupleoftimes before. And I knewtherewas a hotel bedroom scenewith me, Steve and Isla [Fisher]. I thought, “Now you’retalking!”

be. So, yeah, the relationship between my wife and Svetlana isn’t good. What kind of music do you play in there? Any music except James Blunt! It’s the same rule in the pub, as well. Any music goes, apart from mine. But we do play You’re Beautiful at five to midnight… When everyone is beautiful?

That sounds like the ultimate hotel bedroom scene. If I’d written it, I’d have written almost exactly that, because I like to watch. But what I didn’t realise is that they would be in the hotel room, and I would be outside their window, looking up and serenading them with my guitar. Are there any more film roles in the pipeline? I think having seen my performance, probably not! The phone hasn’t been off the hook. There have been a lot of biopics recently. Who would play you? Well, it’s strange you bring it up now, because the person who would probably play me is Alan Partridge. That’s who I’d like to play me in my biopic, which is obviously going to be produced shortly. You’re the master of taking down Twitter trolls. What’s the funniest diss you’ve had? I don’t know, because there have been so many. When you’re face-to-face with people, they’re normally quite polite. When I do reply, I try and make sure it’s with humour and kindness.

LOVE ISLAND END–OF–TERM

“I will haunt your dreams forever”

SIANNISE BECOMES A MEME QUEEN

#44

Every year, it happens: the Islanders are happily settled, and then a bombshell comes in to rock the boat. And this time, it was Rebecca making her entrance in a Grecian goddess-meets-Playboy ensemble and treating all the boys to a cheeky lap dance. But it was Siânnise’s reaction that proved most memorable. The beauty consultant’s not-so-poker face sparked a thousand memes. Chilling.

And, since then, we’ve seen it all. Betrayal, seduction, deception, and more “Can I pull you for a chat?” preludes than we could possibly count. Here’s our best of the best…■

SHAUGHNA’S EPIC COMEBACK

So, the guy you’ve been snogging for three weeks has jilted you for another girl, and the pair of them are standing in front of you – with the nation watching. You’ve got two choices: break down in a wreck of tears and snot, or stare them down and utter something iconic. Thankfully, Shaughna chose the latter. We’ve already ordered our “Congrats… hun” T-shirt.

4

FINN POPS THE QUESTION It’s no secret that emotions and PDAs are heightened in the villa, but Finn really surpassed all our expectations when he proposed to Paige… that she be his girlfriend. Guys, we may be cynical, but even we had a little tear in our eye as he listed what he loved about her, while his fellow Islanders cheered him on. Paige was wearing white, too, of course.

Sure, they go in to find love, but who says it needs to be the sexy kind? In fact, Love Island prides itself on its bromances: Chris and Kem, Tommy and Curtis, and now Luke T and Luke M. Our hearts truly melted as we watched them continuously turn to each other in times of good and bad.

JESS GETS AN EYEFUL

Beware the green(Skittle) eyed monster

You know what it’s like: you’re trying your best to effortlessly flirt with your crush, and think you’ll impress him with a little party trick. Jess was every woman as she threw a Skittle in the air and tried to seductively catch it in her mouth… only to get it caught in her false eyelashes. Relatable.

6

SOPHIE’S CHOICE

We’ve never seen anyone as relentlessly smiley as Sophie. But her perma-grin was seriously tested when partner Connor got dumped, prompting her to break down and question whether she should stay or leave with him. But intense analysis by online fans concluded there were no tears. Curious.

THE BOYS PLAY IT (NOT SO) COOL IN CASA AMOR

They were already on one freebie holiday, but the boys almost cracked ribs with excitement when they found out they were moving to Casa Amor – screaming, jumping on top of each other and dropping down for some lastminute push-ups before meeting six new girls. Sorry, lads, was one luxury villa not good enough for you?

DEMI FAILS TO BLEND IN

They may spend the majority of their busy days tanning, but some Islanders go the extra mile to get the glow. Enter Demi, who had the internet in hysterics when she was caught mid-blending and bronzing. Watch this space – you could be looking at Pantone’s new spokesperson.

LEANNE’S ICK AND TIRED

Initially, they were the most loved-up couple in there. But things quickly turned sour between Mike and Leanne, with the latter revealing she wasn’t feeling it after all. I think that’s why she’s so relatable – like most women, even though we’re cautious, we’re still vulnerable. In her heart of hearts, she still wants to believe this one is the right one. So, she’d never close herself off. But like she says, she should take note of their actions – as opposed to what they’re saying – more. Was it frustrating to see her doubt herself? Absolutely, but I think that’s where her heart has been dented in the past – she still has Callum attempts self-doubt. But in every other to explain himself walk of life, she’s confident,

SIMPLY BE Style ed Laura on why the brand has got you covered

C

ommitted to design, fit and shape, Simply Be’s S/S20 collection doesn’t disappoint. Ticking all the trend boxes – from fun prints and florals, to denim and slogan tops – the collections are available up to UK size 32, with footwear in both standard and wide widths. Plus, all styles are the same price no matter what the size, which is often not the case on the high street. What’s more, the brand offers a maternity collection, including fashion, lingerie, nightwear and swimwear, in sizes 12-26 and cup sizes C-F. And not only do Simply Be offer on-trend fashion in sizes 10-32, the brand constantly strives to inspire confidence and encourage women

to express themselves. Their mantra? Style shouldn’t come with a dress size – something I am totally on board with! The brand continues to encourage women to feel confident in their own skin, and their recent model search attracted over 3,000 applicants, all inspired to make a difference and help change the face of fashion. The winner, 25-year-old Elena Forrest – pictured below with two of the judges, model and campaigner Felicity Hayward, and owner of Milk Model Management, Anna Shillinglaw – was chosen for her body-positive attitude, and will star in their S/S20 campaign. Following on from last year’s New Icons campaign, Simply Be continue their commitment to diversifying fashion – something we like to see!

HANDS

#64

Dry, cracked hands can be really uncomfortable. So, reclaim your hand-model credentials with some fab products that’ll leave your mitts looking and feeling magic. This exfoliator is a great place to start – wet hands, apply a pea-sized dollop and gently massage into fingers and palms to remove dead cells. Pay extra attention to knuckles, as they often become rough. After drying, apply a rich hand cream – we love Lanolips Coconutter, which not only smells divine but mimics skin oils to restore moisture. And treat yourself before bed by applying an oil rich in essential fatty acids. Bonus points if you invest in a boujee set of bed gloves. Yep, that’s a thing.

CUTICLES

If you’re guilty of neglecting your cuticles, now’s the tim to get on board with a little self-care. Cuticles can often grow over the nail bed, making them look shorter, so gently push back the skin with a manicure stick, helpi to keep nails healthy and make polish last longer. If you suffer with splits in the skin, a lemon butter crème massaged into the cuticle will repair and replenish. Finally, indulge in a cuticlefriendly sheet mask. Bursting with ingredients such as vitamin E, it will hydrate dry cuticles and keep hands looking princess-worthy. Royal waves at the ready.

It might seem odd that an Italian eaterie is stealing all the headlines in this capital of cuisine, but Noto (Noto-paris.com) attracts a superglam clientele, including Rochelle Humes, who dined there while on a girly trip to the city last year. During her visit to the super-hip restaurant, she dined on tomato spaghetti and a couscous and pomegranate salad.

With its sweeping views of the Paris skyline, and balconies offering perfect selfie opps in front of the Eiffel Tower, the iconic Four Seasons George V Hotel has been the number one place to rest your A-list head since 1928. Its doors have welcomed the Kardashians, Gigi Hadid and Rita Ora into its Art Deco rooms, and it boasts a spa, swimming pool and the kind of suites plush enough to receive the Anna Wintour seal of approval. No wonder you’ll need at least £800 a night to stay there.

The

waytheCoopers create a storyline revolving round a letter sent by Slugs from beyond the grave is both gloriously funny and a beautifully apt way of saying goodbye to such a key member of the show’s cast, who had never acted before until Daisy and Charlie decided to incorporate their real friends and family into the fabric of the series. Kerry’s storyline, meanwhile, takes her to the local recycling centre, where she’s got a new job. She obviously screws it up almost instantly, but quite how and why makes for deliriously entertaining viewing. And next week’s episode brings the well-meaning local vicar (Paul Chahidi) to the fore, in deeply hilarious and moving scenes taking place almost entirely within his car. This Country may soon be leaving us, but, like Slugs, it will be truly cherished and never forgotten.

ome to Croatia,” they said. “It’s all sunshine and beaches,” they said. What they didn’t say is that we’d be swerving those beaches in favour of standing beneath a concrete underpass on a concrete housing estate while smoking-hot shell casings literally rained on us from above. But we should have known – this is Strike Back, after all. Yes, our favourite save-the-world heroes are back, but it’s a bittersweet experience,

as this is the final series. In a show where characters are bumped off with gleeful regularity, we’re nervous – and the cast are doing nothing to make us feel better. “Oh yeah, expect something that will hit hard and rip the team apart – emotionally at least,” laughs Alin Sumarwata, who plays the absolute queen of kick ass, Cpl. Gracie Novin. And in true SB tradition, no one is safe. “We got told, even before we stepped on set for the first season, that

everyone has a bullet with their name on it,” says Dan Macpherson (Sgt. Samuel Wyatt). “We’ve all been expecting it, so who knows?” But, in a show where the stunts rival a Hollywood action movie, there’s a feeling that if they are going out, they are going out hard. “Going into a final season, we can be bolder,” says Warren Brown (Sgt. ‘Mac’ McAllister). “We want to go out with a bang – whether that’s the biggest stunts we’ve ever done or the most

explosive set pieces – and the writers don’t have to hold back.”

HUMAN TOUCH

But it’s not all about the action. “All that stuff is bigger, but it’s also going to emotionally involve the audience more,” says Varada Sethu, who plays comms geek and fledgling bad ass Manisha Chetri. “This season is a lot more human, and people will connect with it. Although, I do also get to play with guns a lot more!”

Varada: ready for action

Sky One/NOW TV, Tuesday 25 February, 9pm

If you’ve been a fan from day one, you’ll know SB likes a reboot. The first series saw thesps Richard Armitage and Andrew Lincoln helm a show that was good, but not great. For series two, the Brits were out and in came Philip Winchester (hot, uptight) and Sullivan Stapleton (hot, shagged anything). It was an inspired move and SB became required viewing for action fans. When they rebooted again for season six, we were nervous. But the show pivoted perfectly: keeping a hot/hot double act in Macpherson and Brown, and introducing women who led from the front. #85 Alin’s seeing (stunt) double

Jamie Bamber gets attended to

We can also expect something… unexpected. Warren – who turned his hand to a spot of directing this series – tells us, “There have always been story threads where we delve into a character more. But, this time, we give the audience something that isn’t always a conventional SB episode. And fans won’t be saying, ‘What the f**k is this?’. Hopefully, they are invested in what happens to all these characters, so don’t mind if

we go off piste.” And Section 20 boss Jamie Bamber promises it will be special stuff. “There is one episode that is the best thing I have read in a long time,” he says. “I didn’t expect to say that about Strike Back – not for snobbish reasons, just that it isn’t trying to win those awards. It delivers a buddy movie with adrenaline and heart, and does it well. But this is something else.” Whatever it is, it was enough to

turn three of the hardest folk on TV into wrecks. Dan admits, “Me, Warren and Alin read the scripts together and one of us had their head under a towel crying. OK, we were all crying. The writing is spectacular – it’s a great chance to reward all the work we have put in over the past few years.”

LAST HURRAH

The cast may be sad to say goodbye, but before they take their final bow, there’s still some

ass kicking to be done, and they are taking it as seriously as ever. “There’s one scene where my hands are tied behind my back and I’ve got a bag on my head,” says Alin. “We weren’t getting it, and I said, ‘OK, you have to let me do this for real. The bag has to be airless’. Everyone was nervous, and I was like, ‘Let’s just do this!’ Afterwards, I was like, ‘Shit, I was just choking for real…’ But we all do what it takes to get the shot.” Oh, how we’ll miss them. n

I

t’s season five of the brilliant prequel spin-off from all-time great US drama series Breaking Bad. And the story is inexorably drawing closer to the time when central character Saul Goodman, played by Bob Odenkirk (known as Jimmy McGill for the previous four seasons), finally meets and then legally represents Breaking Bad’s legendry drug kingpin anti-hero Walter White. At the end of the previous run, McGill changed his professional name to Saul Goodman as he got his law licence back, and is now clearly heading down the route of the dodgy, tacky and immoral law practitioner we all know and love – kind of. While TV ratings generally decline for most long-running shows on what we used to call the main “terrestrial” TV channels, most of Ant & Dec’s projects defy that trend – none more so than Saturday Night Takeaway, whose most recent and 15th series in 2018 was its most watched yet. Now it’s back after a two-year break, and we’re promised more stunts, pranks, games, prizes, celeb guests and a weekly slot from that Stephen Mulhern, with the first guests inculding The Pussycat Dolls and Camila Cabello. Perhaps the most authentically Ant & Dec of all their TV vehicles, Saturday Night Takeaway is a guaranteed good time. HHHHH Boyd Hilton

T

his instantly enthralling four-part drama created and written by Sarah Williams (The Long Song, Case Sensitive), explores family conflict, resentment and complicated inter-relationships as it flirts with the crime thriller genre. It all kicks off when three adult siblings – Helen (Claudie

Blakley), Jake (Russell Tovey) and Natalie (Lydia Leonard) – suddenly have to deal with the revelation that their recently widowed mother Vivien (Francesca Annis) is in love with a new man, Mark (Stephen Rea). If that sounds a bit like BBC1’s recent Gold Digger, there is a slight similarity of subject

matter, although this series feels less over the top and more realist in tone. The performances are all totally authentic and the whole thing is also enlivened no end by the great Imelda Staunton, as the family’s longtime neighbour, who takes great delight in observing their business. I Am Not Okay With This Netflix, Wed 26 February

Made by the impressive combo of the director of The End Of The F***ing World and the producers of Stranger Things, I Am Not Okay With This is based on the Charles Forsman graphic novel of the same name. The story follows Sydney (It ’s Sophia Lillis), a teenage girl who’s dealing with various issues, such as high school, family and developing mysterious superpowers. You know, the usual. Expect supersnarky dialogue, social awkwardness and lots of blood. The cast also includes Wyatt Oleff (It), Sofia Bryant ( The Good Wife) and Kathleen Rose Perkins (Gone Girl). It’s three-and-a-half years since the last episodes of Last Tango, and five years since the last full series. Now, it’s back for a very welcome new run, and creator Sally Wainwright’s (Happy Valley) dialogue and observational skills are as superb as ever. As we rejoin the great Alan (Derek Jacobi) and Celia (Anne Reid), they’ve been married for seven years and live in an idyllic bungalow. TV Comedies Like a sketch show, but with hecklers

Is this the real life? Is this just comedy?

The Stand Up Sketch Show

Meet The Richardsons

Here’s series two of the bold hybrid of – as the title suggests – stand-up comedy and sketch show. Series one featured the likes of Joel Dommett, Seann Walsh, Russell Kane, Suzi Ruffell and more telling stories to an audience, before the comedians take part in sketch-y recreations of what allegedly occurred in those tales. It kind of, almost, more or less works. ★★★ Boyd Hilton

This faux-documentary comedy about the lives of real-life husbandand-wife comedians Jon Richardson and Lucy Beaumont is a curious beast. The pair play exaggerated versions of themselves, surrounded by friends and family, some of whom are real (adorable young daughter Elsie), while others (Jon’s agent) clearly are not. ere’s an interesting one: the classic sci-fi anthology TV show, which influenced the likes of Black Mirror, comes back from the dead thanks to Jordan Peele, the director of Get Out and last year’s Us. The opening episode is a new version of the classic 1963 Twilight Zone tale Nightmare At 20,000 Feet, which has already been updated once, even if it was 37 years ago in Twilight Zone: The Movie. Renamed Nightmare At 30,000 Feet, perhaps to literally up the stakes, this version sees Adam Scott (Parks & Recreation) star as journalist Justin Sanderson, who’s flying on a commercial plane when he finds a true-crime podcast that seems to describe how the flight he’s on is about to disappear.
