SHOOT FOR THE EDIT Peter Eastway explains how to approach image editing as a process that begins when you’re still out in the field any people believe that if you don’t capture a good image with your camera, you can fix it later in Lightroom or Photoshop. However, while there’s no doubt that we can do amazing things in post-production, there are many, many reasons why shooting images correctly for the edit makes good sense. Try to think of photography as a chain of events, from searching for a subject and taking the picture, to processing the raw file and

M

finessing the subject in post-production. The final image is only as good as the weakest link in the chain – and this is why we can’t overlook the importance of shooting for the edit. Someone who’s much more erudite than me suggested that a camera is simply a pixel-gathering device, and that we should always aim to capture the best-quality pixels possible. So, whether you’re capturing separate images to merge together

in post-production, or just a single exposure for optimum quality, there are some essential techniques that begin with our camera craft in the field. Don’t just read this article in the context of creating composite images. Shooting for the edit is just as important for all your single-exposure images – despite the power of our raw processing and editing software, you’ll still get the best results by capturing the optimal starting image.

WATCH THE HISTOGRAM t might sound obvious to more REPEATING ELEMENTS experienced photographers, but the This was originally a horizontal most important thing you can do is frame – the cows on top of the keep an eye on your camera’s histogram. While framing, focus and light are important, perhaps the most important technical skill is not overexposing WORTH THE your highlights. EFFORT? In photography, Focus stacking can take time, we are generally so if you’re only going to show unappreciative of ±ĹƤĜĵ±čå ŅĹ ƼŅƚų ƵåÆŸĜƋåØ ƼŅƚ pure whites – snow might get away with just using or a white wall, for ŅĹåƤüų±ĵå ±ĹÚ ±ÚÚĜĹč ĜĹ ± ĬĜƋƋĬå example, are expected extra sharpening. However, if to have some texture you then need to make an and tonality. If you exhibition print, you’ll have to process again! overexpose the highlights, your pixels are recorded as pure white and, while you can darken them down to the required tonality in post-production, you can’t recover the texture – and texture is a quality that’s important for a satisfying image. So, my first step when capturing an image with my camera is to ensure the highlights are not ‘clipped’, meaning the edge of the histogram graph is not touching the right-hand side. The only exception is when the sun or a specular highlight is within the frame – in which case it will clip, and a little white is acceptable. What about the blacks? There will be many times when as a result of not overexposing the whites we are underexposing the blacks. However, our eyes are more forgiving of detail-less shadows, so this is usually an acceptable compromise. For subjects like landscapes, though, it’s often possible to take a second exposure for the shadows, and more if necessary, using exposure bracketing, thus capturing better-quality pixels. One of the reasons I use a tripod when I can is so that the two, three or more exposures are all correctly aligned, saving me time in post-production. For many of us, assuming the camera focused on the subject correctly, the job is finished; but for some disciplines, such as landscapes, we now have to ask, how sharp ±ųåƤŅƚų ŞĜƻåĬŸ ƋĘųŅƚčĘŅƚƋ ƋĘå Ĝĵ±čåũ Sometimes it’s not possible to keep everything in the scene in focus using depth of field, even with a small aperture, so my solution is to focus-stack the scene, with an exposure bracket on the last frame if required.

PROJECT 1: THE BOAB TREE uring winter in northern Australia, you’ll see thousands of tiny fires dotting the landscape. Some are from lightning strikes, but most are planned ‘burns’ to manage the land. We were plain lucky to have the fire in the background, but it got me thinking about how amazing the photo could have been with fires burning all around. A few nights previously, we photographed a couple of fire fronts close to the road, and so the idea for the composite image was hatched. What makes this a relatively simple composite is that it’s shot at night, and so merging one dark area into another is relatively straightforward. Nevertheless, you might be surprised at just how precise the masks needed to be in order to make the final image believable. 4

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN THE FIELD xperience will soon tell you that it’s not always possible to composite images together for a seamless result. For instance, if the light is coming from above in one element, but from the side in another, when the two images are merged the result can look unnatural. Successful composites are created when the image qualities of all the elements are similar or visually compatible – such as lighting, focus, colour balance, ISO setting and file resolution. Many photographers try to shoot their elements in flat light, enabling them to add in the key light in post-production. Many successful composites are made from elements shot specifically to create the final result. When shooting, think about the edges – how are you going to cut them out? Photos with shallow depth of field where the subject has blurred edges can be difficult to cut out and merge, so ensure that your elements are in sharp focus around the edges. And remember that subjects photographed against a plain background are easier to cut out. Elements can be merged with hard edges, which requires precise masking and selection work, or with soft edges. For instance, to drop a tree into a landscape is challenging because of all the fine detail, but to add in a sky might be easy if you merge it with the existing sky using a broad, soft-edged mask.

BLURRING It’s best to capture blurs in-camera, rather than blurring in post-production. However, you can capture several frames with ÚĜýåųåĹƋ ÆĬƚųŸ ±ĹÚ ÏŅĵŞŅŸĜƋå ƋĘå best ones together

E

REPLACE THE SKY This is a good starting point if you’re new to compositing

Cloudscapes without breaks in them (blue sky) work best for landscapes that were originally photographed in overcast conditions. These clouds were remarkable because of how they were juxtaposed to the horizon.

å ϱųåüƚĬ ƵĜƋĘ ŸƚĹųĜŸåxŸƚĹŸåƋ ÏĬŅƚÚŸ üŅų ƋƵŅ ų屟ŅĹŸ× the angle of the light in the clouds should match the landscape, and the colour can look odd if the landscape below is photographed in the middle of the day.

One of the most common composites includes a dropped-in sky, often to make a bland blue sky more emotive, or a dull grey sky more interesting. However, you won’t always be able to walk ŅƚƋŸĜÚå ±ĹÚ ĀĹÚ ±Ĺ interesting sky when ƼŅƚƤĹååÚ ŅĹåØ ŸŅ ĵ±ĹƼ photographers build up ±ƤĬĜÆų±ųƼ Ņü ĜĹƋåųåŸƋĜĹč skies that can be pressed into service when they’re required. COMMITMENT

Think carefully before you decide to create a composite, because you’re probably committing yourself to many hours of work, especially if it requires precise masks. It’s amazing how much time can be chewed up, but if you enjoy the process, it’s very satisfying when you end up with a good result

PROJECT 2: THE EMERGING LAMA omposites can help us to recreate an experience that our cameras just couldn’t quite capture. In Bhutan, lamas and monks officiate at many ceremonies. As they chant and read prayers, bells are rung, bushes are burnt and clouds of smoke envelop the scene. There is something quite ethereal about the experience. I positioned myself to fill the frame with smoke, and waited for it to clear in front of the lama’s face. However, despite me taking fifty or

C

so exposures, not one shot had quite the right combination of smoke and lama. Either the smoke was beautifully shaped, but the lama obscured, or if the lama was clear to view, the smoke did not look voluminous enough. However, within my fifty or so shots, I had the necessary elements for a composite and, because they were all shot under the same lighting conditions and with the same camera, ƋĘåųå Ƶ±Ÿ ± ųåĬ±ƋĜƴåĬƼ ŸĜĵŞĬå ŸŅĬƚƋĜŅĹ× merge two images together to create

OBSCURED BY SMOKE The base image has all the elements in the correct place – the only disappointment is the amount of smoke covering the lama’s face. The seated gentleman on the right of the scene is also a distraction

a perfect version of the scene. Once the two images were composited together, I used Photoshop adjustment layers to enhance the tonality and give the impression of the lama emerging from the clouds. My base exposure was mindful of the bright light on the lama’s head, which resulted in deep shadows on his face and body, but there is just enough information in the file to bring out the detail using a series of Curves adjustment layers.

SMOKE-FREE AND EMOTIONLESS By taking a few steps forward, I could be sure of capturing the lama without any smoke in the way. The backlighting remains interesting, but the ambience is lost without the pillows of smoke in the foreground

HIGHLIGHT DETAIL Detail is retained in the lama’s head, with the exception of a small specular highlight from the sun LIGHTEN THE FACE Careful masking with a series of Curves adjustment layers was needed to lighten the face

SHADOWY FIGURES One shadowy observer is retained, while a second is removed. Was this necessary?

BACKLIGHTING Backlighting creates great atmosphere and enhances the softness of the smoky surroundings

By removing the gentleman on the right with the Healing Brush, the composition is possibly strengthened. However, the shadowy gentleman on the left was retained. Should he have been removed too, or both left in? There’s no correct answer – it’s up to your discretion.

This is the mask that was used to blend in the smoke-free lama. The ĆľÄ˜ÄœĆ‹ĂĽ ¹ųü¹ ųüƴü¹ďŸ Ć‹Ä˜ĂĽ ľŅĚĊ ¹Ƌ ĹŽÇˆÇˆŢ Ĺ…ĹžÂąĂ?ÄœĆ‹ĆźĂ˜ ĆľÄ˜ÄœÄŹĂĽ Ć‹Ä˜ĂĽ Ä?ųüƟ ŸĆšųųŅƚĚÚŸ ĜĚ the mask help to merge the backgrounds together seamlessly. A large, soft brush was used on the mask.

LIGHTEN LAMA’S FACE

STRENGTHEN THE COLOUR

The photo of the lama without smoke obscuring his face is opened, copied and dropped into the base image. It has been processed so that the tones in the background are identical to the base image, and then re-sized to match the original scene.

The composition and framing are in place, but the most important aspect of the photo – the lama’s face – is too dark. Three Curves adjustment layers with soft-edged masks were used to lighten the face and add in a little contrast, while keeping the result believable.

Given so much of the image is light tones of grey, the reds of the lama’s clothes and the blues in the background can be enhanced with a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to take the viewer’s eye more ÄœľľüĂšÄœÂąĆ‹ĂĽÄŹĆź Ć‹Ĺ… Ć‹Ä˜ĂĽ ŸĆšĂ†ÄŁĂĽĂ?Ć‹ĹŁ e ƾ¹ųľ Ć‹Ĺ…Ěü ƾ¹Ÿ ¹ÚÚüÚ ßŅų Ć‹Ä˜ĂĽ Ä€Ě¹ď Äœľ¹Ä?ĂĽĹŁ

CRASH COURSE ESSENTIAL PHOTO SKILLS MADE EASY

FOC AL LENGTH EXPL A INED Mike Harris explains how focal length is calculated, and shows you how different focal lengths affect your photos Focal length is something you might be familiar with, but be honest: do you MINS actually know what it is and how it’s measured? Focal length is used to determine a lens’s angle of view, which is what you see when you look through your camera’s viewfinder. It’s measured from the point where rays of light converge within a lens (the ŞŅĜĹƋ ŅüƤÏŅĹƴåųčåĹÏåš ƋŅ ƋĘå ϱĵåų±űŸ ŸåĹŸŅų ŠŅų üĜĬĵšØ ±ĹÚ ĜŸ ϱĬÏƚĬ±ƋåÚ ƵĘĜĬå the focus is set to infinity. Lenses with fixed focal lengths are known as prime lenses, and lenses

30

with variable focal lengths are zoom lenses. Understanding the angle of view is crucial when identifying ƵĘĜÏĘ ĬåĹŸ ƋŅ ƚŸåØ ±ĹÚ ĜƋűŸƤŸŅĵåƋĘĜĹč that seasoned photographers do on instinct. The smaller the focal length, the wider the field of view and more ‘wide-angle’ the lens. The larger the focal length, the narrower the field of view and more ‘telephoto’ the lens. Focal lengths are often split into six categories. On the next page you’ll find a breakdown of each category, and the genres of photography they’re often associated with. It’s worth noting that

these parameters can shift slightly, depending on where you look or who you ask – we’d suggest that you treat them as guidelines that will help you get used to choosing the right focal length for the job. Ultimately, the best focal length will always be the one that helps to convey your creative vision. We’ve referred to focal lengths in ƐĂĵĵ ŠŅų üƚĬĬěüų±ĵåš ƋåųĵŸ ĘåųåØ ŸŅ Ĝü you use an APS-C or cropped-sensor camera, refer to the ‘Quick Tip’ box to find out why APS-C focal lengths differ, and how you can calculate them quickly and easily.

1 ULTRA-WIDE-ANGLE

Focal lengths below 24mm are referred to as ultra-wideangle. Such focal lengths provide extremely wide angles of view, and are often used to cram large buildings or sweeping landscapes into the frame. Fisheye lenses use ultra-wide-angle focal lengths too, but feature even wider angles of view due to their specialist construction.

2 WIDE-ANGLE

Wide-angle focal lengths offer wide angles of view that aren’t as extreme as their ultra-wide counterparts. 4 SHORT TELEPHOTO

Focal lengths of 70mm to 300mm are sometimes all referred to as telephoto, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. It’s worth making distinctions within this category, ±ĹÚƤƋĘå ŸĘŅųƋ ŠŅų ĵåÚĜƚĵš ƋåĬåŞĘŅƋŅ ϱƋåčŅųƼØ ƵĘĜÏĘ čåĹåų±ĬĬƼ čŅåŸ ƚŞ ƋŅ ŎƐĂĵĵØ ĜŸ ޱųƋĜÏƚĬ±ųĬƼ ŸƚĜƋ±ÆĬå üŅų portraits and close-up photography.

6 SUPER-TELEPHOTO

Go beyond 300mm and you’re into super-telephoto territory. These focal lengths offer the narrowest angles of view and furthest reach, and are used for extremely distant subjects, making them ideal for wildlife, aviation events, and for picking out individual sportspeople from the sidelines.

QUICK TIP APS-C sensors are smaller than fullframe sensors, so only a portion of the image is projected onto them, meaning the same lens on an APS-C

sensor effectively has a narrower angle of view than on a full-frame sensor. To work out the ‘effective focal ĬåĹčƋĘű ŅüƤ± ĬåĹŸ ŅĹ ±Ĺ ÏųŅŞěŸåĹŸŅų
