Adam Lambert belted out tunes alongside Queen.

Fire Fight raises nearly $10m It’s a beautiful thing when we all get together to do something good. And that’s exactly what happened when Australia rallied at the Fire Fight Australia concert in Sydney on Sunday, February 16, raising a total of $9.85 million for bushfire affected communities. It was hosted by comedian Celeste Barber – who’s raised more than $51 million through her Facebook page – and she thanked volunteer firefighters.“Our volunteers across this entire country, they are the ones who saved us,” Barber told the crowd. “They are the ones who cancel holidays to stay here and look after us, and I will speak now very confidently on behalf of a nation when I say to those volunteers: Thank you.” Almost 5 million tuned into Seven’s coverage of the event, and were treated to performances from Queen + Adam Lambert, k.d. lang, Delta Goodrem, 5 Seconds of Summer, John Farnham,

and Olivia Newton-John, among others. Fire Fight’s profits will be shared between the Red Cross’ disaster relief and recovery fund, rural and regional fire services and the RSPCA’s bushfire appeal. As to where the money from Barber’s enormous personal fundraiser will go, legal experts believe the NSW Supreme Court will need to intervene to enable the donations to be distributed to bushfire victims and first responders. Currently nothing has made its way to those doing it tough because the RFS trust deed prevents donations being spent on purposes other than firefighting equipment and facilities, training and some administrative costs of the brigades.“We have our lawyers working with Celeste’s lawyers to find a way this can be done,” RFS spokesman James Morris told AAP. – TEAM WHO

Speaking out publicly for the first time since his conviction, the 24-yearold declared:“I’m not going to give up on someone, especially my dad.” Karen vanished from Avondale Heights northwest of Melbourne in June 2016. Her body was found eight months later in bushland. For years, Borce Ristevski angrily denied any involvement in her death before entering a shock last-minute guilty plea. “Even though he’s pleaded guilty, I find it hard to comprehend that he is guilty. I think if he were in my position he would support me,” Sarah, who was reportedly paid a six figure sum for the interview, told reporter Liz Hayes. “He’s my father. ictured together for the first time since quitting as senior royals, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle appeared carefree and relaxed as they stepped off of a commercial flight in Victoria, Canada, on Valentine’s Day. Meghan was sustainably stylish, carrying her eco-friendly Prada bag, and wearing flats made by Rothy’s, a San Francisco company that creates shoes out of recycled water bottles. In the weeks since they announced they were ditching ‘The Firm’, the Sussexes have been spending most of their days holed up in a $21 million Vancouver Island mansion, where a source tells WHO they had been “enjoying the quiet life … they are real homebodies who love to chill out with Archie and the dogs”. But, despite all the cooking, yoga and nature walks, things are not as laid back as they seem. Laser-focused on their goal of financial independence, the couple are eagerly carving out plans that could see then rake in hundreds of millions, for themselves as well as the charities they champion. The appearance was widely criticised, with some commentators accusing them of hypocrisy, and ‘cashing in’ on Diana’s death. Royals A previously unseen behind-the-scenes video of Meghan Markle when she was guest editing British Vogue last August has left royal aides “cringing”, according to the Daily Mail. “This just leaves her open to ridicule. It just goes to show where their priorities lie. Likes and clicks,” the outlet quotes a source as saying. Meghan and editor in chief Edward Enninful, who wear party hats and blow party whistles in the clip, wanted to release it earlier, but were advised not to by horrified palace officials who warned it was “too self-congratulatory”, “inane” and “frivolous”. In the video, Enninful talks about when they first met. “I was like, ‘Lovely to meet you, Duchess,’ he recalls. “Then you were like, ‘Call me Meghan!’.” Both laugh at this, before Meghan reveals she initially approached the mag for help on her Smart Works fashion fundraiser initiative before asking if she could guest edit. “I didn’t know if anyone had ever done it before,” the royal mum says. “No – in the history of Vogue, you’re the first,” Enninful replies. “You have an editor’s eye, I mean, I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Meghan, meanwhile, looks set to revive her entertainment career and status as a celebrity. In addition to voiceover work for Disney, the former Suits actress has been actively looking for a manager or for future projects, and it’s certain she’ll have multiple offers to act, host talk shows, give tell-all interviews and deliver speeches for in excess of $100,000 a pop. Media executive Simon Huck told Canadian current affairs show Morning Toast that, even though his PR company is not currently representing her, his agency

was “flooded” with “huge” offers of work for the former actress in the wake of Megxit. “She’s not taking any offers right now, but it was unbelievable,” said Huck, a close friend of the Kardashian clan. “If she did it all, she would make $100 million ... but she won’t. She’s not going to do traditional commercial endorsements; she’s not going to be doing a perfume. She’ll do things with ... Netflix.” Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos was asked about the prospect of working with the couple. “Who wouldn’t be interested?” he responded. “Yes, sure.”

Indeed, Harry is already collaborating with Oprah Winfrey for an upcoming Apple TV+ mental-health project. The couple were last week labelled callous after they laid off 15 loyal members of their London staff, fuelling rumours they are leaving the UK permanently. Some had worked for the couple for years and were said to be “shocked” and “devastated”. Meanwhile, many Canadians are lukewarm at the prospect of having to stump up for security costs. In a poll, 73 per cent said they shouldn’t have to pay, with only 3 per cent were happy to do so. One political leader told the Montreal Gazette: “I don’t see any reason why Quebecers’ taxes should be used for Meghan and Harry, any more than they should be used to finance the Simpsons.” Ahead of that, they have been ordered back to the UK by the Queen for the Commonwealth Service on March 9. An emotional confrontation with Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton looms large. “They didn’t leave on good terms by any means, but they are both relieved it’s over,” a family friend tells WHO. “The brothers have been talking as little more in recent weeks leading some to hope they can gradually repair their fractured relationship.” The Sussexes refused an invitation to embattled Prince Andrew’s 60th birthday party this week, citing “previous engagements” – though royal watchers suspect they don’t want to be associated with the prince after the Epstein scandal. Although the Queen has publicly said she is “entirely supportive” of her grandson’s move, privately she is hurt and bewildered by Harry’s choices, and is still hopeful he may one day return to the fold.

I was really sick … It was through hyperemesis that I really realised the power of the mind over the body because I really had to try everything and everything to try and help me through it.” Kate said she immediately connected with hypnobirthing, which involves various relaxation and self-hypnosis techniques to help relax the body. “There’s levels of it,” added Kate. “I’m not going to say that William was standing there sort of chanting sweet nothings at me. He definitely wasn’t! I didn’t even ask him about it, but it was just something I wanted to do for myself.” She was candid about debuting her babies on the steps of the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital after their births. “Yeah, slightly terrifying, slightly terrifying, I’m not going to lie!” Kate said of showing George to the world in 2013. “Everyone had been so supportive, and both William and I were really conscious that this was something that everyone was excited about … But equally, it was coupled with a newborn baby, and inexperienced parents, and the uncertainty of what that held, so there were all sorts of mixed emotions,” she said. “I totally underestimated the impact and the change it had on our lives from that moment really, and I think, unless you’ve got children, you don’t realise. T

he British tabloids and cancel culture are once again being called out following the shocking death of popular Love Island UK host Caroline Flack. The 40-year-old took her own life in her London home, less than 24 hours after an ambulance visited the property. According to The Sun, Flack “refused to go to hospital” insisting she was “fine”. Last Saturday, Flack’s family confirmed the sad news with a statement to the press. “We can confirm that our Caroline passed away today, the 15th of February,” the family’s statement read. “We would ask that the press respect the privacy of the family at this difficult time and we would ask they make no attempt to contact us and/or photograph us.” The accomplished presenter was openly struggling following an incident which saw her charged with assault against her boyfriend late last year. LAND’S CAROLINE FLACK

AGIC A DEATH popular dating reality series which airs on ITV2 in the UK – Flack fell under intense scrutiny from the British media ahead of her trial which was due to take place next month. In December, police were called to her London home in the early hours after she allegedly assaulted her boyfriend Lewis Burton after reading messages on his phone. Despite Burton refusing to press charges, the Crown Prosecution Service made the decision to go ahead with a trial. “Been advised not to go on social media,” she posted on Instagram on Christmas Day. “This kind of scrutiny and speculation is a lot to take on for one person to take on their own ... I’m taking some time out to get feeling better and learn some lessons from situations I’ve got myself into to.” The day before she passed away, Valentine’s Day, Flack posted a series of photos of herself with her dog Ruby, captioning the post with a simple love heart emoji. Flack’s ex-fiancé, Andrew Brady, has lashed out at the star’s management, claiming they are to blame for her premature death. “Her managers Francis and Louise you knew she was depressed,” he wrote on Instagram. “And you PR w***ers who did nothing to protect her. I hope that 20 per cent kills you. You c---s! You make me sick. You knew she needed help and you did f--- all.’ Brady called police in November 2018 after believing Flack was on the brink of taking her own life. The broadcaster was a fixture of the British tabloids thanks to the success of Love Island and a string of high-profile relationships which were believed to include Prince Harry and Harry Styles. Hundreds of celebrities and members of the public expressed their sadness at Flack’s passing including Boy George, Natalie Imbruglia, Kelly Osbourne and former Love Island winners Amber Gill, Dani Dyer and Amber Davies. ITV2 pulled Saturday night’s episode of Love Island from the air and on its return on Sunday, voiceover artist Iain Stirling opened the show with a tribute. “We are all absolutely devastated by the tragic news,” he said. “Like

he’s been trying to build a connection with her TV groom Mikey, but Sydney businesswoman Natasha can’t help but be distracted by all the gossip circulating about her private life. The 26-year-old, who applied for Married at First Sight after a broken engagement to a much older man, even had to involve police in a revenge porn case last week after an alleged sex tape appeared on social media – another struggle in what was meant to be just a different way of finding love. “It’s literally been one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do – and I’m pretty damn resilient,” Natasha tells WHO of the reality show bubble.

Is Mikey the kind of guy you’d go for in real life? Mikey and I have a tonne of mutual

friends, so we were quite surprised that we hadn’t met before! Andrew, my ex and best mate, who was at our wedding, doesn’t know Mikey that well, but he knows Mikey’s brother. Mikey grew on me, I’m not gonna lie, so who knows … I probably would go on a date with him in real life. You mentioned one ex, but you also dated Love Island’s Eden Dally. What’s the story there? We’ve been friends for years and years, like way before he was on Love Island. We crossed paths and then he was my trainer at F45 and we had a fling. And now, he really has been a bit of a support through this whole process. We’re mates; he’s so excited to be a dad and I just really wish him and Cyrell [Paule] the best. And what about talk of a romance with Sophie Monk’s ex, Stu Laundy? Isn’t it the funniest thing ever? I’ve never even met Stu Laundy! We have a mutual friend, and I said to him

yesterday, “can you please ask Stu why he’s confirmed this and if he’d like to do a meet and greet one day so we can actually meet each other.” It must be strange reading these things about yourself… It’s so bizarre. I laugh now, but it took me a little while. You know, “Natasha seen with three men”, and it’s like, “Congratulations Natasha on keeping a functional relationship with exes!” I guess the only stuff that really hurts is the private stuff that’s obviously come from friends or exes. Have you developed a pretty thick skin since being on TV? My skin is like a plate of armour. There’s obviously some stuff that has come up at the moment that definitely pierced through that armour … so definitely as the days go by this week, I’m getting stronger because I have to be. How did you deal with those sex tape rumours? I’m not going to make a comment, unfortunately. So your beauty regime got a lot of interest on the show! Would you know

how much you spend on your upkeep? What I talked about happens in a quarter, so maybe $1500-$2000? So that looked like a bit of an extreme list. I was like, “Good Lord, am I that high maintenance?!” And how often are you getting cosmetic procedures? I think I get Botox every four months, and filler, probably twice a year. Not every week – which is how it sounds on the TV show! But I pay for all my own beauty products and that’s the important part. Coming out and starting a business now, I’ve definitely had weeks where I can’t afford things and that’s just real life. You have been outspoken against bullying online. What toll has being on reality TV had on your mental health? It’s definitely hard. I am so close to a lot of my castmates, and watching a single mum like Stacey go through the torture she’s going through … I don’t think anyone should have to be as resilient as we’re meant to be. Tash and Amanda may be the first lesbian couple to marry on the show, but mum-of-two Mishel tells WHO that she is also open to finding love with a woman.“I’m very fluid with sexuality, I really don’t care,” Mishel says.“I don’t like using terminology like, you’re gay, or you’re lesbian, or you’re bi, or you’re pan, I hate that. You are who you are, and I fall in love with a soul or energy.” The 49-year-old is currently“married”to Steve, and has made no secret of the fact that she’s had trouble trusting in relationships after being cheated on by seven out of eight partners in the past.

Aleks and Ivan have been slowly getting to kn ow each other on MAFS.

‘Ivan has two personalities’

She hasn’t been married for long, but Aleksandra has already had a makeover since becoming Ivan’s wife. “I feel like I definitely have lost a bit of weight, changed the hair colour – that was maybe a little camouflage to not be so recognised,” the newly-blonde real estate agent says. Aleks, 27, and Ivan, 30, have been getting along so far this season, but the bride tells WHO she’s been struggling with her partner’s two personalities. “When it was just us two alone, he was amazing – I couldn’t fault him, he treated me like a princess,” she says. “But in social settings, especially around other women, I felt quite degraded, like I wasn’t enough for him. I’ve told him multiple times but a leopard doesn’t change its spots.” Aleks also hints at drama with another groom. “I’m pretty amicable with everyone but there’s one person there I wouldn’t ever talk to again or have any respect for, and that’s Michael,” she says. “I don’t hate anyone but one person I never want to speak to for the rest of my life is Michael.”

T

hings just keep going from bad to worse for George Calombaris. Not only has the 41-year-old former MasterChef judge, who was charged with assault in 2017, seemingly lost everything, but he has been slammed online since news broke that the hospitality empire he founded, MAdE Establishment, has been placed into voluntary administration. The news of the collapse of MAdE comes just months after the company admitted to underpaying $7.83 million in wages to 515 of its current and former employees. Many blamed Calombaris personally for

the accounting mishap, with punters also pinning last week’s news of the immediate closure of 12 venues and loss of more than 400 jobs on the celebrity chef. “That’s what happens when you rip people off,” one Facebook user commented shortly after the announcement. As the very public face of the business, Calombaris unsurprisingly copped the brunt of the blame for the fall of the 12 venues, and it seems he and wife Natalie Tricarico will also take a personal financial hit after they listed their Toorak home and Safety Beach holiday property for sale. no longer, things couldn’t look much worse for Calombaris’ future. But insolvency expert Jeremy Nipps, a liquidator and partner of Cor Cordis, suggests this won’t be the end of the Melbourne restaurateur’s career. “He can go and open up another restaurant if he wanted to, there’s no preventing him,” Nipps explains exclusively to WHO. “There’s no stopping a director of a company from recommencing a business. He would be able to do that. The law allows that. There’s no stopping that.” Unlike personal bankruptcy, MAdE Establishment going into voluntary administration will not affect Calombaris’ personal ability to start again. According to Nipps, the reason why the father of two is selling personal assets is that they are likely tied to loans associated with the business. “I don’t know what the structuring of the company is but generally what we see a lot of the time in the director’s personal financial position is inextricably linked to the business itself,” he says. “Generally, personal assets have been pledged to support funding or whatever else the bank has helped fund in the form of a loan. There are very often situations where a director’s house has been used as security to allow the business to be funded. “That could be one of the reasons why he’s selling. He needs to unlock any equity to pay down bank debt.”

ver since Joel Jackson burst onto our screens as Peter Allen in Seven’s 2015 biographical miniseries, there has been speculation that he is set to become the next big thing in Hollywood. The 28-yearold Australian star has spent cking up appearances in film and TV projects both here and overseas, and it appears that all his hard work is about to pay off. The WA born and raised performer posted a topless photo (see right) along with a cryptic message on his Instagram account last month hinting at a huge role he would be filming later this year. “With a big shoot mid-year and a tonne of travel in the next two months, I want to be ready for what’s coming and also primed for opportunities,” he wrote. And when it came to locking in an interview with WHO to discuss his role in Australian film H is for Happiness (which will have it’s home entertainment release later this year) and beyond, Jackson was hard to pin down. “It’s been an absolute whirlwind,” he said, when speaking with WHO. Whisked away with little notice last week after being signed to a new film, there’s no doubt about it – Jackson is in high demand. The star – who is also a singer-songwriter – plays Rich

Can you tell us about the big project you’ve got coming up mid-2020? I can’t at the moment, other than the fact that it is quite big. It’s going to be really incredible and every time I get to do something like this it’s special. It’s going to be a big adventure. What can you tell us about? Not a lot, which is a bummer. People will think I’m making this all up! I can’t say much, apart from the fact that it’s really awesome, a lot of hard work and, like anything, if you really love what you do, and take the risks to be on the front foot then, you either get it or you don’t. It’s a challenge to keep going after it. This year is the tip of the cap, going, “Yeah buddy, you did the right thing.” I’m very happy. Well you’re looking shredded on your Instagram! Can we assume that has something to do with the top-secret role? That’s the thing about those Insta things, putting it out there! No, mostly I was letting other people know that healthy feels good. I think it’s that thing – all of us – this year has shown us that we can’t really control much else. If you can have a sense of security or make time for yourself and your body and your mind, then whatever happens, you’ve

got you. You are your greatest tool. Where are you based at the moment? Coogee in Sydney, but I’m on the road for a while now. I’d been intending to move to London and then I had three days there and I had to come home to film this. It’s always good, keeps you on your toes. You pack light! Is it disconcerting to not know where you’re going to be living and working? I’ve been at it for seven years this year and it’s amazing. It used to be a point of worry or stress and now it’s just part of the grand adventure. I’ve come to love it. It never ceases to surprise me or to challenge me. Why did you sign onto H is for Happiness?

“It’s a challenge … [But] I’m happy”

BIG TIME THIS YEAR!

I was given an audition scene and then as soon as I read it, I understood what was happening in the relationship between the uncle and Candice. I chased and chased it until I got my hands on the script and loved it, and then I found out it was filming in Albany and that’s where I was born, so I had to be in it. So, I kept chasing, I kept fighting tooth and nail and luckily [director] John [Sheedy] and I saw eye to eye on the character, and he let me be part of his beautifully wacky and imaginary world. What was it like filming at home? I took my grandparents to set because my whole family lives in Albany, so that they could see what I do … There were moments, where Uncle Brian’s yacht is at a little jetty down the road from where I grew up and I used to fish on it. His house is the house my sister got married in. The primary school where they filmed is where three of my aunts and uncles teach. It’s awesome. ■ By Holly Richards

FRAN DRESCHER

king Back My Life F AFTER YEARS OF BURYING HER PAIN, THE ‘NANNY’ STAR TELLS WHO SHE’S FOUND INNER PEACE

ran Drescher isn’t easily ruffled. Take, for instance, her approach to notoriously horrific LA traffic. Curled up in the plush master bedroom of her beach-side Malibu home to talk to WHO, the actress and comedian remains philosophical. “You could get road rage and think, ‘Oh God, I’ve got to get to where I’m going!’ Or you can think as Buddhists do: Look around, take that in, and maybe see something that will surprise you,” she says. “It helps you to accept life as it presents itself and be grateful for it.” Yet finding calm amid chaos certainly didn’t come easily for Drescher, whose unmistakable laugh and thick New York accent have brought joy to fans for decades. Reflecting on her darkest moments – including a terrifying rape in 1985; a very public divorce from her husband of 21 years, Peter Marc Jacobson, in 1999 (after which he publicly revealed he is gay); and a uterine cancer diagnosis in 2000 – Drescher, 62, says comedy was her way of masking her pain and insecurities. But now Drescher, who is starring on new comedy series Indebted and developing a stage musical adaptation of her hit ’90s sitcom The Nanny for Broadway, says she’s taking her life back one day at a time.

“In order for me to be well-rounded, I have to sometimes make it about me,” she says. Having grown up in Queens with a father, Morty, who was a naval technician, and a mother, Sylvia, who worked behind the cosmetics counter at a local pharmacy, she says her “joyful” home shifted the moment her older sister Nadine fell ill (she declined to elaborate on the nature of the illness). “That pivoted the family’s focus and balance onto [my sister],” says Drescher, who didn’t want to be “an additional burden” to her parents. “At a very early age I got the message to feel bad if something was about me. And that’s probably why I’m an actress, because at the end of the day, nobody becomes an actor if they don’t on some level want to say, ‘Look at me, Ma’.” Determined to find purpose and a sense of self, Drescher chose to follow in the footsteps of TV icons such as I Love Lucy’s Lucille Ball and I Dream of Jeannie’s Barbara Eden and started landing minor film roles, including her first major break, in Saturday Night Fever alongside John Travolta. “I decided I should try and make my living out of something that comes easily to me and doesn’t feel like work,” says Drescher, who was once told by a teacher she’d have to change her highpitched, nasal voice if she ever wanted to be successful. But in 1993,

Interview Drescher (along with Jacobson) created The Nanny, which she wrote, produced, directed and starred in as Fran Fine; the show wound up running for six years. “That definitely changed me significantly,” she says. “I wanted to do it all, and I did. It was a very fertile time creatively.” Despite the success, Drescher was dealing with a secret, unimaginable pain. In 1985, at age 28, the actress and a friend were raped at gunpoint, while Jacobson, then already Drescher’s husband of seven years, was forced to watch. “After the rape, my friends knew, but I couldn’t even call my parents and tell them. I had my sister tell them,” she recalls. “I never wanted to be any additional stress for my parents, having seen how traumatised they were from when my sister was young and having health issues. So I’d go into my room and be by myself and quiet for hours. I didn’t want to ever have to tell them something was wrong with me.” From there Drescher and Jacobson’s marriage spiralled downward over the course of the next 14 years. “I wasn’t feeling as happy as I thought I’d feel with money and fame and creative control,” she says. “Peter started to have control issues that I found somewhat suffocating, and only in hindsight do we now understand that he was working so hard to control his authentic self, his true orientation.” Two years after the marriage ended, Jacobson told Drescher he was gay, but their love for one another never faded. “I now lovingly refer to Peter as my gay ex-husband,” she says.

She compares leaving the relationship to “walking through fire”. “I had never done anything for myself that was against the will of somebody else that I cared about,” she says. “And that was part of my problem. I kind of had a back seat in my own life. I was making everybody else happy but not really myself.” One year after her divorce, she was diagnosed with uterine cancer, and had an immediate radical hysterectomy. Her habit of not asking for help “became like a real mental block, and I had to break through it. Getting cancer was my opportunity, because I couldn’t do it alone. It opened me up to realising that supporting and advising other people gives you a false sense that you have your s--t together.” Drescher says she was able to “gain a lot of clarity” in therapy: “I was in such crisis and feeling feelings that I never really allowed myself and saying out loud things that I felt guilty about just thinking, for my growth as a human being. Now I’m not really obsessed with being the best, most need-less, caregiver. Now relying on her faith in Buddhism and the lessons she’s learned has helped conquer more than gridlock: Drescher says she has a new-found love for the woman she’s become. “Getting really connected to myself has been a great journey,” she says. “Now I don’t feel like I have to be in a relationship, as I’m in a relationship with myself, and it’s going quite well!” ■ By Christina Dugan

hey were inseparable from the moment they were born, but, even as toddlers, identical twins Michelle Lauren Anderson and Katherine Anderson-Hill had their own ichelle was spunky and stubborn,” says their mum, Linda. “Katherine was quieter; Michelle would run and Katherine would follow. They were different, but loved doing everything together.” That inimitable bond between them changed forever on May 19, 1996. The twins, just 2 at the time, were visiting their father and his wife (their parents divorced in 1994) for the weekend when a fire broke out in their bedroom around midnight. Katherine was able to escape without major injury, but Michelle’s bed was ablaze. “I remember seeing the flames coming up on me,” says Michelle, whose father managed to pull her out – but not before more than 90 per cent of her body had been badly burned. (An investigation suggested the cause of the fire was a wayward cigarette, but it was never officially confirmed. The twins have had no contact with their father or his wife since.) “She’d been wearing a wet diaper, so that part of her wasn’t burned, and she had a pacifier in her mouth, so her lips were saved. Her eyes were open, so her eyelids weren’t burned off. I believe she was

Real Lives standing in the corner, trapped,” says Linda, 51, who married Edward Anderson in 2000. “Every day after that was a battle. We knew it was going to be challenging forever – for all of us.” In the 24 years since that fateful night, Michelle and Katherine, 26, have forged an even stronger connection – one that has grown through a lifetime of physical and emotional challenges. While Michelle has fought mightily to overcome the pain and ordeal caused by her injuries (she’s had more than 80 surgeries so far), Katherine has had to come to terms with her own remorse and frustration. “There were times when I felt a lot of guilt seeing my sister in pain and knowing there was nothing I could do,” she says. “But we’re as close as sisters can be.” Adds Michelle: “Katherine was my constant support system. But having someone who looks exactly like you – but doesn’t have scars – is always a reminder of what my life would have been. She’s the life and the face I could have had.” In the weeks following the fire, Michelle’s prognosis was dire. “They told me that if she survived, she would have no hands and feet, maybe no arms and legs, and if she got off the ventilator, she’d be on oxygen and possibly be blind,” says Linda, a registered nurse who works in a care unit. Two weeks in, Michelle developed sepsis, and doctors urgently began a series of temporary dressings and skin grafts, mostly from donated tissue, to cover her burns and avoid further infection. “They did her face first,” says Linda. “Then every two weeks, they’d take skin from her back, head or her butt and replace another part of her.” Michelle underwent 25 surgeries before she finally went home on November 1, 1996. “That’s when the recovery really began,”

says Linda. “Katherine was too young to understand, but Michelle had lost everything.” Initially Michelle, who also suffered serious damage to her lungs and oesophagus from smoke inhalation, remained on a feeding tube; dressing her wounds could take hours. She had to learn how to walk and talk again and she suffered from vivid nightmares about the fire for more than a year.

“Every night around midnight, about the same time as the fire, it would start all over again. I would rock her, saying, ‘You’re safe, you’re safe,’” says Linda, who took two years off to care for her daughter. Her skin grafts and reconstructions continued weekly – often leading to infections and other complications. “Michelle had surgeries throughout our childhood,” says Katherine,

Why wasn’t it me?’ It just didn’t seem fair.” In 1997 the sisters started school parttime, and in some ways, both struggled to fit in. “Michelle was excluded from more things than I think she realised – and Katherine too, because they knew who her sister was,” says Linda, who would visit their class at the beginning of each school year to explain to the kids what had happened. “There were always the questions and stares,” says Michelle, who remembers being called a monster in preschool. “That was my first realisation that ‘Wait, I’m not just a normal kid’.” Adds Katherine: “I would tell them about her scars and her limitations and defend her.” But, by the time the twins turned 14, tensions between them had begun to surface. Katherine had become a competitive synchronised swimmer and cello player, and she found herself struggling to balance being there for Michelle and carving out her own future. “It was sometimes hard to be continually supportive,” she says, “and also be a kid and have my own life.” Meanwhile, Michelle’s constant surgeries were taking a new toll. Due to the painful recovery process, she was finding it harder to maintain her grades. She was also having difficulty matching her sister’s pace. “We were really competitive already,” says Michelle. “I wanted to do everything, but my body wouldn’t keep up.” Adds Linda: od “Finding something Michelle could be good at was important, because everything she wanted to do, her twin could do better.” That summer Michelle went away to a camp for burn survivors in Colorado, wherre she discovered her passion for horseback riding. “I just was drawn to horses,” says Michelle, who became an equestrian competitor and now gives therapeutic riding lessons near her home in St Paul. “Finding our own identities is what saved our friendship,” she adds. “If we’d done thee same activities, it would have destroyed me. m I would never have felt good enough, because I’d have always been comparing myself to her.” Since then the sisters’ differences have brought them even closer. “We talk every other day on the phone,” says Katherine, who married Matt Hill, 25, a research technologist, in 2017. “I don’t know what I would do without her. She’s much more than just my twin.” Michelle still copes with myriad physicall issues– more than 70 per cent of her body is unable to sweat, and she has pain and

BIGG DIVO FOR THESE WARRING COUPLES, A FAIRYTALE LOVE STORY ENDED IN RECRIMINATIONS ... AND SOME ENORMOUS PAYOUTS

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

The Hollywood mega-couple’s $715 million split in September 2016 was sudden, and shocked most of the known universe. Jolie asked for full custody of their six children while Pitt was being investigated over allegations he got ‘verbally abusive’ and ‘physical’ with Maddox on the pair’s private plane the day before Jolie filed for divorce. The case was dismissed, but a flurry of ugly accusations followed, and their clashes over the kids wound up surfacing in public court documents. A judge ruled that Jolie could lose custody if she didn’t allow them each to form a ‘healthy and strong relationship’ with their dad. She claimed he hadn’t paid her any meaningful child support, but Pitt’s lawyer hit back the next day, accusing her of manipulating media coverage to make her look like the better parent. Even now, Jolie is furious that he turned their lives upside down, and refuses to clear the air. She has reportedly told friends she had never wanted to marry him in the first place.

GEST ORCES Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman

The A-listers met and fell in love on the set of the 1990 movie Days of Thunder. “He basically swept me off my feet,” Kidman told Vanity Fair. “I fell madly, passionately in love.” They adopted two children, but in 2001, Cruise abruptly filed for divorce, less than two months after they’d renewed their vows on their 10-year anniversary. According to reports in the New York Post at the time, when people asked why they were getting divorced, Cruise would say, “Ask Nicole. She knows”. The $544 million divorce was finalised on August 8, 2001, with many speculating that his devotion to Scientology and her refusal to follow suit caused the split. He continued to raise their children as Scientologists.

A day after the Amazon CEO and his wife announced their decision to split after 25 years of marriage in January last year, the National Enquirer published salacious details of Jeff’s new relationship with TV anchor Lauren Sánchez. Bezos’ lawyer accused the tabloid of trying to extort him by threatening to publish nude photos he’d sent to her. MacKenzie walked away with $55 billion (leaving him with $164 billion, and still the richest person on earth) and she plans to donate half of her settlement to good causes.

Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger

After nine tumultuous years of marriage, the film actors split in 2001 and became embroiled in an acrimonious years-long custody battle over their only daughter, Ireland, which cost more than $5 million in legal fees. In seemingly endless court files, affidavits and motions, 9½ Weeks star Basinger depicted Baldwin as having a dangerous temper, and he in turn characterised her as manipulative in turning his daughter against him. Things intensified in 2007 when TMZ posted Baldwin’s threatening voicemail in which he berated 11-year-old Ireland as a “rude little pig” and threatened to straighten her out. He blamed Basinger for the leak, and apologised through gritted teeth, saying he was “driven to the edge” by years of “parental alienation”. A court ordered him to take anger management and parenting courses.

Lionel Richie and Diane Alexander

The ‘All Night Long’ crooner got together with the former dancer in 1986 when he was still married to first wife Brenda. Two years into the affair, Brenda discovered them together in a hotel room bed after she’d yelled “Room service!” through the door. He married Alexander after the divorce from Brenda (they are adoptive parents to reality TV star Nicole), but after seven years and two kids together, Diane filed for divorce. In her alimony petition she claimed a monthly clothing allowance of $23,000, money for five luxury holidays a year, a full-time staff – including two nannies and someone to comb the dog – as well as a plastic surgery budget of $30,000 a year. Richie eventually coughed up $30 million.

Rupert and Anna Murdoch

After 32 years of marriage, the media mogul called it quits with his wife in 1999. Seventeen days later, the then 68-year-old married 30-year-old Wendi Deng in a secret ceremony on his yacht in New York. “I think that Rupert’s affair with Wendi Deng – it’s not an original plot – was the end of the marriage,” Anna told the Australian Women’s Weekly in 2001. “His determination to continue with that. I thought we had a wonderful, happy marriage. Obviously, we didn’t.” Of the $2.5 billion in assets that Anna scored in her settlement, $160 million was in cash.

Costly Splits Harrison Ford and Melissa Mathison

The pair met on the set of Apocalypse Now in 1976 and married in a 15-minute ceremony at a Santa Monica courthouse in 1983. They had two children during 21 years of marriage before they divorced after numerous fights about his workload. She wanted him to do only one film a year and spend more time with the family, but he refused. Ford was ordered to pay out a whopping $171 million, with the settlement decreeing his ex was entitled to a percentage of royalties from all the blockbuster films he made during their marriage, including the Indiana Jones and Star Wars movies. Mathison, who wrote the screenplay of ET, died of cancer in 2015.

The actors married in June 2005 and announced their separation a decade later as reports surfaced that he’d had an affair with their nanny – claims he has denied. “We had been separated for months before I ever heard about the nanny,” Jennifer told Vanity Fair. “She had nothing to do with our decision to divorce. Bad judgment? Yes.” The parents-of-three divorced in 2018, two months after Garner drove Ben for a stint in rehab. He has since struggled with alcohol, including being pictured drunk on Halloween last year. “What [Garner] ultimately cares about is his sobriety,” a source told WHO at the time. “And whether she can rely on him to co-parent.”

Sandra Bullock and Jesse James

Days after 2010 best actress winner Sandra Bullock walked the red carpet at the Oscars with husband of five years, bike mechanic and gun manufacturer Jesse James, the couple’s marriage imploded. A tabloid revealed James had cheated with a stripper and several other women. At the time, the couple were in the process of secretly adopting a baby boy called Louis. The Blind Side actress finalised the adoption alone. “I messed up really bad on a global scale and everybody knows it,” James later said.

Mel Gibson and Robyn Moore The Braveheart star and the former dental nurse married in 1980 and had seven children together before separating in 2006 following his infamous arrest in Malibu for drink driving. Moore finally filed divorce papers in 2009 after devout Catholic Gibson’s relationship with thenpregnant Russian pianist Oksana Grigorieva was made public, shortly before she gave birth to his baby. “When all’s said and done, I did a pretty good hatchet job on my marriage,” he admitted. He was ordered to give half his $618 million fortune to Moore.

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard

Heard filed for divorce in 2016 after 15 months of marriage. Four days later she walked into a Los Angeles courthouse with a black eye and filed for a restraining order, claiming Depp had been “verbally and physically abusive” throughout their relationship, allegations he denied. But even after the divorce was settled, and she agreed to accept $10 million (which she donated to charity), the drama continued. She wrote an article for The Washington Post, describing being a victim of domestic violence. She never named Depp, but he launched a $73 million lawsuit. In response, Heard filed court documents stating he repeatedly hit her, ripped out her hair and choked her. “Johnny often would not remember his delusional and violent conduct after he came out of his drunk or medicated states,” she said. Depp’s lawyers were quick to dismiss the claims as a “hoax” and accused her of abuse. The case is ongoing.

Kevin Costner and Cindy Silva

The pair met at California State University in 1975 and married two years later. “She was beautiful, she was sweet, she was smarter than me,” Costner told WHO in 1989. “She represented everything about women that I like.” Rocky times followed due to his workload and rumours of womanising. Silva filed for divorce in 1994, days after stories swirled that Costner was having an on-location affair with a married hula dancer while filming the box office bomb Waterworld in Hawaii. Silva finally walked away with $116 million.

Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren

On Thanksgiving weekend 2009, golf legend Woods crashed his Cadillac outside his Florida mansion. His wife of six years told police she’d used two golf clubs to shatter the rear windows of the car to help rescue an incoherent Woods. But there was widespread speculation that she had broken the windows after an argument. The accident occurred just days after a report in the National Enquirer claimed he was having an affair. Within days, several more women came forward with stories that he’d been playing around with them too. “I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated,” he declared in a televised statement. “I stopped living by the core values that I was taught to believe in.” But Nordegren rebuked his attempts to make up. “I’ve been through hell,” the Swedish-born former model and nanny told WHO, admitting she was ‘blindsided’ by her husband’s infidelity. “I felt stupid as more things were revealed – how could I not have known anything? The word ‘betrayal’ isn’t strong enough. I felt embarrassed for having been so deceived.” For her trouble, she is said to have walked away with close to $145 million in the settlement, one-sixth of his net worth at the time.

Bernie Ecclestone and Slavica Radić

Diminutive Formula One billionaire Bernie Ecclestone divorced Croatian model Slavica Radić, who is 27 years younger than him, in 2009, after a 23-year marriage. Friends joked at the time that they were the same height … if he was standing on his wallet. The settlement was estimated at $1.7 billion. Soon afterwards, he announced his engagement to then 35-year-old Fabiana Flosi, a Brazilian marketing exec 47 years his junior.

Paul McCartney and Heather Mills

The former Beatle and modelturned-activist Mills were married in a lavish wedding in 2002, on the private grounds of a remote castle in Glaslough, Ireland, and went on to have a daughter, Beatrice, together. Their 2008 divorce, however, was more public, and extremely acrimonious. The mudslinging began when he alleged in documents that she was argumentative and rude to his staff, and accused her of bugging his phone. Mills, who in 1993 lost a leg after being struck by a police motorbike, accused him of physical and emotional abuse as well as doing drugs during their marriage. In court, she requested $364 million; he offered $44 million and she received a lump sum of $48 million, $22 million in real estate and $102,000 a year to support Beatrice, now 16, for whom they had joint custody. Mills angrily threw a glass of water over his lawyer in court after the judge questioned her honesty.

Amy Irving and Steven Spielberg

The up-and-coming actress and the Jaws director’s four-year marriage ended in 1989 after he fell in love with the female lead in the second Indiana Jones film, Kate Capshaw, who is still his wife today. A judge invalidated a prenuptial agreement written on a cocktail napkin, and Irving was awarded $145 million dollars, half of his fortune.

Ivana Zelníčková and Donald Trump The business mogul turned president does everything big, and his sensational headline-hogging divorce was no exception. Trump and model Zelníčková were married in 1977 and had three children together – Ivanka, Donald Jr, and Eric. They split in 1989 after he had an affair with model and actress, Marla Maples (who later became his second ex-wife). Famously, Maples confronted the then Mrs Trump in Aspen and said, “I’m Marla and I love your husband. Do you?” The reply was: “You bitch, leave my husband alone.” Divorce followed and after a contentious back-and-forth, a judge ordered she receive $20 million plus a 45-room mansion in Connecticut, an apartment in the Trump Plaza and roughly $950,000 annually to support their kids.

Michael and Juanita Jordan

The former Chicago Bulls basketball star and his model wife had one of the most expensive divorces in history when they settled in 2002, after 13 years of marriage. Despite both of them signing a prenup agreement, she walked away with $244 million and their massive Chicago estate. When Michael Jordan got engaged again in 2013, he made sure his prenup was a little more watertight, and protected his $800 million fortune by saying his fiancée would only be entitled to $1 million for every year they were married.

Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards

Former Bond girl Richards was six months pregnant with her second child by Sheen when she filed for divorce, alleging he abused prescription medication, had violent mood swings, was a compulsive gambler and had threatened to kill her. In 2015 Sheen wrote an open letter calling Richards “the worst mom alive” and an “evil terrorist sack of landfill trash”. In September last year, she claimed he had “squandered” more than $35 million from the sale of his interest in Two and a Half Men, and still owes $655,000 in child support for daughters Sam, 15, and Lola, 14.

Guy Ritchie and Madonna

Their 2008 split, after seven years of marriage, was intense and bitter as the couple publicly bickered over her obsession with Kabbalah, an alleged affair with baseball star Alex Rodriguez (now engaged to J.Lo) and the adoption of baby son, David Banda, from Malawi. His biological father even stated he wished the couple were still together. The News of the World reported Madonna’s half-day workouts had left her too tired for any sex for 18 months, and the Daily Mail wrote that Ritchie, then 40, told his then 50-year-old wife that she “looked like a granny”. It’s rumoured Madonna paid him between $110 million and $134 million, and they continue to scrap over their son, Rocco.

James Cameron and Linda Hamilton

The director and the star of Terminator married in 1997, and had a daughter, but their happiness was short-lived. The split came when she discovered he was cheating on her with Titanic actress Suzy Amis. In fact, when Hamilton had first started dating him, he was married to film director Kathryn Bigelow. Hamilton, who walked away with a $73 million divorce settlement just two years after the wedding, referred to the union as “terrible on every level” and claimed they never should have wed. “That relationship was a mystery to all of us – even Jim and myself – because we are terribly mismatched,” she told The New York Times in an interview last year promoting their professional reunion on box office bomb Terminator: Dark Fate. “He was the kind of man who really would rather be at work with the mistress than at home with the wife.”

Kelsey Grammer and Camille Donatacci

The Frasier star married former Playboy model Donatacci in 1997, but the marriage began to fall apart while she was filming The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills in 2010. When their divorce was finalised, Donatacci was awarded $44 million, half the couple’s worth. They co-parent their two children but don’t speak. “Some threats were made, and some extremely unacceptable behaviour took place in front of the children,” Grammer told Oprah Winfrey, “which makes it impossible for us to pretend that we can be civil.” He accused her of only marrying him for the fame. Donatacci’s take: “I was there to help him get through some of his hardships, and supported his career and his sobriety. He acts like I never existed. That’s disappointing.”

Michael Douglas and Diandra Luker

The Oscar-winning actor met Luker, the daughter of an Austrian diplomat, at a party in 1977 when she was 19 and he 32. Nine days later, he proposed, and they were married within six weeks. A year later they had son, Cameron, but things soured amid allegations of his sex addiction and drug use. Their drawn-out divorce was finalised in 2000, so that he could marry Catherine Zeta-Jones. Luker received $65 million – half the actor’s net worth – and their Santa Barbara estate. She is still fighting for his money, including earnings from the Wall Street movies. “I’m not into mudslinging, and I refuse to lower myself to even tell you the tip of the iceberg,” Luker told Harper’s Bazaar in 2011. Michael commented two years later: “We should have ended that marriage eight or 10 years earlier.” Their son spent seven years in prison for drug offences before his release in 2016.

Costly Splits Garth Brooks and Sandy Mahl

The couple met when he was working as a bouncer and broke up a fist fight she had in the rest room. They married in 1986, and three years later Brooks became a country superstar. They were married 15 years, and had three daughters before divorcing amid accusations of infidelity. He ended up paying her $185 million, one of the biggest celebrity settlements in history. Four years later, he married songstress Trisha Yearwood, his occasional duet partner.

The couple filed for divorce in 2015 after two years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. “Olivier had an explosive temper in a way that was profoundly frightening,” a source told WHO at the time. Martinez, Berry’s third husband and second baby daddy, had a history of altercations, including a 2012 Thanksgiving brawl with Berry’s ex Gabriel Aubry, the father of her now 11-year-old daughter, Nahla. The couple’s prenup protected her $100 million fortune. They share custody of their son Maceo, now 6.

WE TRIED

Known as the non-surgical facelift, this non-invasive, skin-tightening facial uses vibration and heat to help tighten and brighten, and reduce crepiness, wrinkles and fine lines in the skin, with little to no down-time and minimal discomfort. And, unlike lasers, it suits any skin tone and type. I had the treatment done on my neck as, at 43, I felt my skin was showing signs of crepiness and lines are becoming more pronounced. The procedure was slightly painful at times, but not unbearable. I went straight back to work, with no appearance of redness, and my skin immediately felt tighter. The best results are said to come after eight weeks, and last for one to two years. I am thrilled with the results and it has only been seven weeks. The 2020 guide to

GREEN LIVING TAKE ACTION TO HELP CURB YOUR ECO-ANXIETY

Y

ou take reusable bags to the supermarket and have banished plastic straws from your life. But in the wake of Australia’s devastating bushfire season, we’ve all become hyper aware of the need to do more. According to Dr Ella Oar, a postdoctoral research fellow at Macquarie University’s Centre for Emotional Health, eco-anxiety has been recognised as a mental health issue by a number of researchers and one of the most effective ways to beat it is to take action – no matter how small.

Start composting

Composting can reduce your household waste by 40 per cent! You can buy a discounted bin at compostrevolution.com.au or connect with your neighbours who have bins using the ShareWaste app.

Reconnect with nature

When I’m feeling overwhelmed I disconnect from the online world and reconnect with nature. Getting outdoors for a swim or a walk is a simple reminder of how beautiful nature is, and inspires me to do whatever I can to help it.

‘START SLOW. MAKE A SMALL SWITCH EACH MONTH’

Lottie Dalziel, founder of Banish, an educational resource and platform for disposable product alternatives.

Stop buying pre-packaged produce

I’d love for Aussies to say goodbye to plastic packaging in the fruit and veg section of the supermarket! Why do we need carrots and apples in bags? I use Onya reusable produce bags ($15.95 for 5, banish.com.au) for any loose bits and bobs.

Switch your super

One of the most impactful ways we can make a difference is to ensure our superannuation and savings are invested ethically. There are a number of fantastic Laura Wells super companies and a few banks not investing in fossil fuels or other harmful activities.

Audit your plastic use

Every day, write down how many single-use plastic items you used and how they were disposed of. Could they be recycled? Did you recycle them? Are there reusable alternatives? You may be surprised at the amount you touch each day, from toothbrushes and coffee cups to drink containers. All of these have an alternative! I use a SodaStream to cut unnecessary plastic bottle waste. One SodaStream bottle can save up to 2190 bottles going into landfill.

Rethink food storage

Seedandsprout.com.au sell reusable silicone food-safe wraps, ziplock bags and food huggies, which means no cling wrap or aluminium foil is necessary, saving both on waste and money.

‘TO FEEL BETTER, CREATE SOLUTIONS’

Andonia Kailis and Hannah Dunkley, co-founders of thinceco.com.

Spread the word

Be more open with your friends and family about what you can do together to make changes. Even small things like not using aircon as much, reducing shower times and eating less meat count.

Make your own milk

Oat milk is a cheap and more eco alternative to almond milk and can easily be made at home. Blend 1 part oats with 4 parts water and strain with a cheesecloth. It’s as simple as that.

Buy in bulk

Bulk food stores have so many package-free alternatives. Our personal favourites are washing liquid and washing powder.

Q Zoe A &

Bingley-Pullin WE GRILL THE NUTRITIONIST, CHEF AND KETO EXPERT What’s your food philosophy? It’s about respecting food and enjoying food from all senses – the smell, the taste, the feel and the look of food. You’re the founder of a nutritional consultancy company. What help do people want with food in 2020? The plant-based trend is still going strong and people are seeking information on how to easily (and deliciously) incorporate more plants into their diet. Food from a gut perspective is still a strong interest for people and I often get asked what people can eat to nourish their microbiome and how this can impact other areas of health including mental health. Tell us about the keto diet It’s all about shifting the balance of your diet towards low carb, moderate protein and a high-fat intake. When we limit carbs, our body runs on fat for fuel instead, which can help to facilitate weight loss, stabilise blood g levels and reduce food cravings, g, sugar

to name a few benefits. What’s a big misconception about keto? People honestly don’t realise how flexible it is. It’s often presumed every meal involves a plate of meat, but a keto diet is definitely possible if you are vegetarian or vegan. Considering 70 per cent of your daily calories come from healthy fats, there are many healthy plant-based fat sources to choose from – think avocado, extra virgin olive oil, nuts, seeds, tahini and nut butters. Tell us about Keto-Fit products and why you recommend them to your clients? I know firsthand, in today’s fastpaced lifestyle, it can be hard to maintain a certain way of eating. This is exactly why Keto-Fit made a range that will support your whole day. It will help you save some of those meal-prepping hours and spend that extra time on the important things while still hitting yyour macros and staying y g in ketosis.

WHAT: PHILIPS SONICARE AIRFLOSS PRO/ULTRA INTERDENTAL CLEANER WHERE: PHILIPS.COM.AU COST: $289 I’m an inconsistent flosser; well, that’s what my dentist tells me! Perhaps it’s my small mouth (or it could be my big hands) but while my front teeth are squeaky clean, I find it difficult to get to my back teeth and in between my molars. When the Philips Sonicare Air Floss Ultra landed on my desk I was keen to test it and find out if it would help me tackle my, ah, inconsistencies. The Protective Clean Kit came with a power toothbrush so I could conduct a full mouth clean. I tried the toothbrush first and was impressed with the diamond-shaped head that helped me get right to the back of my mouth. I have a tendency to brush too hard and damage my gums, but the clever pressure sensor gently pulsed when I did so, reminding me to ease up. It also has a timer pulsing every 30

seconds to help guide you to continue cleaning for the full f es. recommended two minute Now for the air floss. I filled the reservoir with water (you can ked it also use mouthwash), click shut and set the flosser to three pulses. I simply had to position eeth the nozzle between two te at my gum line and hit go. Three short pulses came out, blasting away my plaque, and a ound I continued the process aro the whole mouth. Easy to use is an ally understatement, and it rea felt like my mouth had a e was thorough clean. Plus, there ental no struggling to get the de eth. floss between my back tee I’ve continued using it ever since and I’m impressed byy the ease and effectivenesss of the whole kit and how healthy my mouth feels.

Wine Notes

ROSÉ IS NO LONGER A TREND ... IT’S HERE TO STAY The rosé trend has been gaining traction for approximately five years. So, as our loyalty to the pink wine is unwavering, is it fair to still call it a trend? I think the time for that has definitely passed! Like everything else, wines and cocktails have trends – think the aperol spritz and espresso martinis. And while rosé first emerged as a trend five years ago, it has now cemented its place as an essential part of any wine list, party or celebration, as well as being as much of a summertime staple as watermelon and beer. Charlotte Plowman, co-founder of specialist New Zealand rosé producer, Waiana Estate, shares her ultimate guide to pairing food with their leading rosé blend, Indian Summer.

Indian Summer, comes from New Zealand’s Waiana Estate, a sustainable, rosé specialist. It’s a dry, ultra-pale, Provençal-style blend with a perfect pale blush colour and a refreshing palate. What’s more, the bottle is worthy of any Insta feed – just as a rosé should be!

SEAFOOD “We recommend shellfish, prawns or crab to accompany your rosé, or indulge in baked salmon with warm vegetables for the cooler months.”

SALADS “Salads with a herb or vegetable component are a great accompaniment. It is important to keep in mind that the salad dressing should not exceed the acidity in the wine – this will overwhelm and wash out the sought-after flavours.”

BARBECUES “It’s really a generalisation that red wine is the more traditional accompaniment to meat dishes. In contrast to the rich, smoky tastes associated with grilled offerings, a dry rosé wine will provide a lighter, more flavoursome experience for the palette.”

48 HOURS IN SINGAPORE

We bypass the tourist hotspots for an immersive city break

KESHNEE KEMP

Head of Video, Pacific Magazines

• Singapore is almost always humid and there are often patches of rain. Carry water and a small umbrella at all times. • If it’s your first time in Singapore, don’t miss the awe-inspiring Gardens By The Bay, home to the most famous structures in the city-state.

T

here’s a distinct humidity that hits the minute the airport doors open to the outside world in Singapore, one that reminds me of the first time I visited this city island nation taking in all the oversized landmarks and Instagram-worthy structures. This trip, I’m travelling with my husband Jason for a quick 48 hours where we plan on avoiding the tourist hotspots like Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay and the Botanic Gardens, though all are worth squeezing in for a first-timer. For this visit, I’m staying at Six Senses Duxton on Duxton Road and, as we’re nearing our destination around 8pm, a crowd of stylish locals spill out of bars and restaurants celebrating the end of the working week. The Duxton Hill area – between Chinatown and the CBD in Tanjong Pagar – was once lined with opium dens, gambling rooms and brothels. Today, history is preserved in the original shophouse structures but these buildings now house yoga studios, bars, restaurants, cafes and two new Six Senses properties. Our hotel is comprised of several former

70 l Who

shophouses, painted grey with green roof tiling, beautiful stained glass awnings and dramatic arched windows. It appears dark, moody and oh-so-chic on first impression. Inside, mahogany is balanced with vibrant splashes of yellow put together by British interior designer Anouska Hempel. Our room resembles the decor downstairs and, though small, we’re immediately at ease with the dark and sensual decor that feels somewhat of a throwback to the goings on in the old Tanjong Pagar. There’s a coffee machine and an authentic, heavy teapot with cups to serve up tea sourced from local family-run teahouse Yixing Xuan. The next morning we wake to enjoy breakfast at the Yellow Pot restaurant downstairs – a luxury included in our booking. The food is innovative and fresh, and the service is impeccable – a five-star experience in a hotel that shouldn’t be missed. After breakfast, we have a consult with a doctor of Traditional Chinese medicine, who operates from the foyer of our hotel.

After completing a basic medical history form, the doctor inspects my tongue and pulse and I’m told I need to take time to meditate and unwind before bed for a better night’s sleep. Jason is shocked when she declares he has a lower back injury that has flared up and needs attention, and takes her up on her offer to perform acupuncture. We later head out on foot to the Yixing Xuan teahouse – which translates to ‘happy, small house’ – just around the corner from the hotel, for a one-hour tea ritual. We’re greeted by Charlene, whose father, Vincent Low, started the modest

While unassuming from the street, we are told this is an institution in Singapore and during a beautiful, traditional experience, Charlene tells us about the process of drinking tea and the art of appreciation. And we’re in good company – Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip slipped in for a quick cup of tea here in 1992. After tea, we jump in a cab and head to the neighbourhood of Tiong Bahru where we find Yong Siak Street, a bustling hipster road lined with cool cafes, bookstores, a yoga centre and gift shops. We head into Plain Vanilla Bakery, where

we each buy a cupcake, and then onto Woods in the Books, a beautiful store filled to the brim with unique books for kids and stunning handmade gifts. After a long day of wandering, we head back to our hotel for a restful night’s sleep. On our second and final day, we eat breakfast at Yellow Pot and then head to Haji Lane, which is Singapore’s original indie spot, a vibrant melting pot of eateries and boutiques. We do the tourist thing and take photos of the bold graffiti marking the lane’s entry point and then spend hours wandering from the lane to Arab Street, still inside the Kampong Glam district, where merchants sell fabric and dresses made by local tailors. We find a local coffee shop, % Arabica, where dedicated caffeine fans spill out onto the street and round the corner waiting to get their hit. Further down the street is the impressive mosque Masjid Sultan, its roof rising high above the shopfronts. Built in 1824, the mosque was constructed for Sultan Hussein Shah, the first Sultan of Singapore. After our visit, we head to famous Orchard Road, lined with enormous boutiques, but we

opt to avoid id the h designer d i b boutiques i we have h in Australia and instead head underground to explore the labyrinth of shopping centres beneath the city. Having worked up an appetite shopping, we jump in a cab to go to the Michelinstarred Hawker Chan Liao Fan Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodles Stall – the first street food establishment to be recognised by the prestigious guide. The popular Chinatown stall is heaving with people and the line is lengthy, but we’ve been assured by friends that it’s worth it and the delicious food doesn’t disappoint. Full and content and after exploring the energetic streets, we decide to head back to Duxton Hill to squeeze in an afternoon treatment at the Six Senses Maxwell, a peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of the busy streets, set in a block of colonialstyle heritage houses built in 1929. After a luxurious massage in a spa pod, I’m given a headset and I recline to listen to the sounds of the ocean. It may have been a city break but by body, mind and soul feel refreshingly rejuvenated. sixsenses.com/en/hotels/duxton

APR. 19–MAY 20

MAY 21–JUN. 20

An important matter concerning money, job, travel, change or new beginnings will excite you or have you talking to family and friends. Pursuing your personal and private plans is favoured. Making up your mind when purchasing expensive goods may be difficult, you may spend more than you originally planned. Avoid rash impulsiveness.

A special person may make contact, send you a gift, or you will be remembered in some way. You’re feeling very loving and affectionate – romantic, as opposed to sexy. You want to be with those you share something with, perhaps to reminisce. Your family will be important to you and you want to be with them, especially your parents, and also your best friends.

A chance of a lifetime may be offered, don’t hesitate to accept. It will put you in the running for better and bigger opportunities for the future. This week is packed with excitement, get-togethers, parties, social functions and outings. Don’t be surprised if an old friend or past acquaintance arrives on your doorstep or surprises you with a telephone call.

A young person may thrill you with good news or with something that is thoughtful and appreciated. Closer family ties can now be expected. You are changing and growing. Your self-understanding is deepening and this is likely to occur through, or helped by, your relationships. They too are evolving. You are not interested in the superficial and your relationships will be intense.

Travel may be undertaken in connection with holidays, business or a matter concerning a member of your family. You could be busy preparing for visitors or relatives, or you may have an opportunity to change residence, renovate or extend your present home. You may have to bend a little bit to the needs and demands of your partner’s impatient desires.

Matters that are hidden, confidential or private may take up much of your time as you sort out the nitty-gritty. You may find yourself making many concessions to others in your drive to succeed. Changes in career or service-type jobs will have you on ‘cloud nine’. With love and relationships, you may astound everyone with your positive attitude as you break some old habits.

YOUR GUIDE TO THE BIGGEST ENTERTAINMENT RELEASES EACH WEEK From left: Sophia Lillis, Wyatt Oleff, Richard Ellis and Sofia Bryant.

STREAMING

‘I’M NOT OKAY WITH THIS’ STARRING: Sophia Lillis, Sofia Bryant, Wyatt Oleff In many teen dramas, the main characters are self-assured, articulate and impeccably turned out. Not so in I’m Not Okay With This, which features a more accurate depiction of the inherent awkwardness and confusion of teenage years than most shows. And there’s possibly not been a more awkward or confused teen character than Sydney (Lillis), who stammers and stumbles her way through life in suburban Pittsburgh. Sydney is grieving the loss of her father, and her increasingly frequent bouts of anger unleash unusual occurrences, like the time her fury at best friend Dina (Bryant) hooking up with the school’s top jock causes his nose to bleed. Coincidence or psychic super power? As

well as contending with what may or may not be special abilities, Sydney is coming to terms with her feelings for her BFF. She clearly has a crush on Dina, but is it more serious than that? With its 1980s sensibilities – the works of John Hughes were a point of reference for the creators – comparisons are already being made to Stranger Things. Indeed, the same producers are behind I’m Not Okay With This. But stylistically it shares more in common with End of the F***ing World, being also based on a graphic novel by Charles Forsman and brought to the screen by director Jonathan Entwistle. Comprised of short, punchy 20-minute episodes, Okay has an indie film sensibility, focusing on character and dialogue

rather than big flashy sci-fi moments. Lillis, who played the young version of Amy Adams’ character in Sharp Objects, does a brilliant job of conveying that mix of uncertainty and discomfort that teenagers so often feel as they work out who they are. Totally believable, her performance is marked by small, understated moments like a strained facial expression or the hesitant way a line is delivered. Then, when her emotions explode – sometimes literally – it is more impactful because most of the time Sydney is the quietest person in the room. Also a standout is Oleff as the quirky Stanley, who is reminiscent of Duckie from John Hughes’ Pretty in Pink. (On Netflix from Wed., Feb. 26)

Sydney’s emotions get the best of her at the most inopportune times.

Aidan WojtakHissong as Sydney’s brother, Liam, and Kathleen Rose Perkins as mum Maggie.

YES, ‘PARASITE’ LIVES UP TO ALL THE HYPE

Gavin Scott

I

t’s amazing what winning best picture at the Academy Awards can do for a film. For one thing, Parasite’s victory at the recent Oscars prompted me to finally stop saying, “I should really see that movie”, and actually watch it. For months, I’ve had it on my to-see list – it did come out in mid-June 2019, after all – but I only just got around to it. I guess I’m not alone since Parasite has recently expanded onto more cinema screens nationally even though it is already out digitally and on DVD. After eight months of being a word-of-mouth sensation, it has now received the greatest recommendation there is courtesy of the Academy Awards voters. The good news for those of you who still haven’t seen the South Korean film is that it deserves all the praise. And I was worried that the buzz and hype around Parasite would raise my expectations too high. My advice: don’t read too much about it – just go see it. I went in more or less ignorant about what to expect, and was rewarded with a genreblurring thrill ride. At times darkly funny, at others intensely thrilling, you really don’t know what is coming next as the story unfolds. Without giving too much away, I will preview that it is about a struggling family of four, who live in squalid conditions and take on low-paying jobs to make ends meet. They come into contact with a much wealthier family and … that’s all I’ll say. It’s gratifying that a movie like Parasite has been so well received – both critically and at the box office. Not because it is a foreign language film, although the fact it is the first to win the best picture Oscar is a major milestone. More because it’s a sign that audiences yearn for the unexpected; for great stories that will entertain them and get them talking. At a time when reboots and neverending sequels have worn out their welcome, Parasite is a sign that there are still original ideas to make going to the movies a thrill. •

There are a lot of opinions and statistics about the policies successive governments have enacted in relation to Indigenous Australians, but this new documentary takes a more personal approach. From director Maya Newell (Gayby Baby), In My Blood It Runs follows 10-year-old Arrernte Aboriginal boy Dujuan, who is falling short of the expectations on him at school but who thrives in a more traditional setting. “I’m not recognised much, but people know my voice from Downton Abbey.”

STREAMING

With co-stars Zoë Wanamaker (left) and Miranda Richardson.

LOGAN The 64-year-old actress, who played Mrs Hughes in Downton Abbey, stars in Girlfriends (on Acorn TV from Mon., Feb. 24) as one of a trio of BFFs. Why did Girlfriends interest you? What’s not to like? You’ve got these three women at the core of the drama. They have their squabbles, but they’re three great friends who look out for each other. You caught your breath every second page – “Oh no, that’s not happening!” – and it was funny. It was appealing on all fronts. Did your character, Linda, stand out as the one you wanted to play? All the parts were wonderful, but I fancied the challenge of being a woman who’s keeping this huge secret. You would think butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth and she has a bit of an airy-fairy demeanour, but there’s some grit there.

Quick-fire Q&A Was it refreshing to do something modern after Downton Abbey? It really was. It was nice to not be Mrs Hughes in a corset. What do you think the chances of another Downton film are? It’s not been discounted entirely. We will probably be the last to know being actors. There’s a saying: actors are like mushrooms, we’re kept in the dark and occasionally thrown a pile of s--t. [Laughs] I’d love to do another one. Next up, you’re in Misbehaviour about the first black Miss World in 1970. I remember watching it at the time. It’s such an interesting story, and Keira [Knightley, who is in it] is such a nice girl. Girl! She’s a grown woman now, but I met her when she was 17 in Pirates of the Caribbean. My husband, [Kevin McNally], was a regular character in those.

KOALA RESCUE This documentary about the efforts to save koalas and other wildlife caught in this summer’s catastrophic bushfires is a stark reminder of just how bad the recent devastation was. From shots of endless burnt out bush to footage of animals receiving treatment for severe burns, it reinforces how our nation has changed forever. Most of all, it shows the heroes, both local and from around the world, who jumped into action to help save a species perilously close to extinction. Underlying it all, is the ominous truth that this could be the new normal if major changes are not made. (Airs Sun., Feb. 23 at 7pm; Seven)

BETTER CALL SAUL S5 STARRING: Bob Odenkirk, Rhea Seehorn The Breaking Bad prequel edges closer to its resolution as Jimmy McGill (Odenkirk) changes his name to Saul Goodman in this season’s first episode and embraces his more dubious inclinations. In fact, he’s positively buzzed about the options open to him as Saul. Girlfriend Kim (Seehorn) is not so sure, and the fact she resists this side of him provides a nice undercurrent of tension between the couple. Could this lead to an explanation of why Kim doesn’t feature in Breaking Bad? Speaking of the parent show, look out for more characters from it to be introduced into Saul this season. Blue Lines by Massive Attack was a groundbreaking record that combined hip-hop, soul, dub and dance music, and very much shaped the sound of the decade to come. And it still stands up today. What’s the ’90s song you never want to hear again? ‘Achy Breaky Heart’ was terrible then and terrible now, but I’m still strangely drawn to Billy Ray Cyrus’ magnificent mullet. Who was your favourite Spice Girl? Ginger Spice, because she was the mouthy, feminist one and came up with their

slogan ‘girl power’. Allegedly. Best ’90s soundtrack? Every share house had a copy of the Pulp p Fiction soundtrack and proudly displaye ed the film poster they’d stolen from a local art-house cinema. That and Reality Bites. Biggest ’90s fashion regret? I was a little bit grunge, a little bit dance and a little bit hippie all at once. And I wore a tiny silver backpack to top it all off. Let’s just say I was very confused. I also had a bob I thought looked like the French woman in Betty Blue. It didn’t. Most underrated ’90s band? Australia’s Magic Dirt fronted by Adalita Srsen were as good as any grunge group from Seattle.

The 90-minute first episode of this unique and sometimes quite shocking new drama takes a long time to get to the point, which is that a group of vigilantes led by Meyer Offerman (a thickly accented Pacino) tracks down and kills former Nazis living in the US in 1977. As we reach that premise, we spend time getting to know Jonah (Lerman), a young man who deals drugs to make ends meet but is by no means a gangster. The story of how Jonah becomes caught up in the Nazi hunters’ world plays out alongside flashbacks to specific acts of despicable cruelty committed in Hitler’s Germany. Those scenes are confronting, and all the better for it, reminding of the monstrosities committed in the lead-up to and during World War II. Some of the 1977-set scenes take on more of a comic book vibe – a particularly violent one – which won’t sit well with all viewers. Expect this one to make waves. leven seasons in, Gogglebox Australia (returns Wed., Feb. 26 at 7.30pm; Lifestyle) is having its biggest shake-up yet, with long-time cast members Adam and Symon and the Jackson family leaving and three new families joining the show. Best friends Kaday (below left), 23, and Chantel, 22, met while hanging out washing in their East Sydney apartment building and found they share a similar outlook on life. What are you most excited about when it comes to joining Gogglebox? Any nerves? CHANTEL Being able to express my opinions

from the perspective of a young woman from the culturally and linguistically diverse community. It’s also exciting to be able to spend time with my best friend and pretty much drink tea as we spill the tea. I’m a little nervous but mostly excited to be on the screens of everyday Australians like us. KADAY Also there’s a feeling of being really lucky to be part of a family, and work alongside really lovely and supportive people. Do you think Australia will agree with your opinions or go, “What are they on about?” CHANTEL Australia has such a widespread set of opinions on different topics so it’s hard to agree with everyone. When it comes to serious

topics, my values tend to align with fairness and equality which, given my background in mental health work, makes sense. When it comes to more lighthearted, trashy TV, my opinions are more larrikin in nature. KADAY We really want Australia to enjoy our banter and, through our friendship, prove that when women love and support each other amazing things happen. What type of show do you hope you won’t have to sit through? CHANTEL I remember the poor families having to sit through this random show of a train heading to nowhere. Please don’t do that to me – I spend enough time on the train.

Gold Coast-based flatmates Milo (left), 34, and Nic, 30, love everything their beachside existence has to offer. The keen surfers and sports fans have been mates for 10 years. What are you most excited about when it comes to joining Gogglebox? Any nerves? NIC We’re looking forward to getting a few good zingers on each other on national TV. MILO No nerves. Do you think Australia will agree with your

opinions or go, “What are they on about?” NIC We hope they don’t agree or listen to our opinions because we are both extremely uninformed about current events. What type of show do you hope you won’t have to sit through? MILO I can’t stand reality TV shows that drag out the drama for 20 minutes then go to ad breaks before they tell you who’s voted out, forcing you to stay up way too late and hate work the next day. NIC That and reality TV that stinks of scripting.
