It has been truly heartwarming to hear how your generous donations have helped our fellow Aussies in need, with many of them writing in to tell us just how much even the smallest offering has meant to them. This week, we speak to Kangaroo Island residents The Stantons, whose positivity and determination to rebuild after losing so much is nothing short of amazing. To each of you who have contributed, I say a very big thank you, and to those affected, please know we are still with you and we will continue to share your stories.

SELENA REVEALS JUSTIN’S ‘ABUSE’

hrough their on-off relationship, which began in December 2010, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez were the A-list tween couple their fans worshipped. Their romance first hit the skids in 2014, but they would reunite and split up several times until Justin married Hailey Baldwin in 2018. And now for the first time, Selena, 27, has lifted the lid on what life with Justin was really like. Speaking about her new song Lose You To Love Me, penned about her 25-year-old ex, Selena says, “I feel I didn’t get a respectful closure... I know I needed some way to say a few things I wish I had said. It was very difficult and I’m happy it’s over.” She added that she was “a victim of a certain abuse” – clarifying later that she meant emotional abuse.

KELLY & JOHN’S $635 MILLION DIVORCE RIDDLE

beloved family mansion shared by Kelly Preston and hubby John Travolta in Brentwood, LA, was quietly sold in an off-market deal last weekend – prompting surprise among their inner circle. “They loved that place. It’s been their home for almost 20 years,” says a source. “It’s a strange move for John to make, but added to rumours lately that their marriage isn’t exactly happy – it makes sense.” Making matters more concerning for Kelly is John yet again declaring his feelings for Grease co-star Olivia Newton-John at the annual G’Day USA gala on the same

day their pad was sold for $26.6 million. “We love each other,” he revealed on the red carpet of his friendship with Olivia, 71. “We are going to rekindle our rapport tonight.” Kelly, 57, did not attend the party with her 65-year-old husband of 29 years. This comes just months after he and Olivia reunited in Florida at a “Meet n Grease” event. “Kelly is sick of John rubbing her face in his friendship with Olivia,” says a friend. “Her and John haven’t been getting on too well lately, and him selling their Brentwood place has people wondering if they’re considering a divorce.”

Meanwhile, Barry has countersued over what he says are $1 million in fees she owes him – that she blew on shopping instead. “Lisa has hit rock bottom,” a source tells Woman’s Day. “She doesn’t know how much more she can take. She just wants to be a good mother. She sticks by her lawsuit and blames Barry for why she’s broke.”

Royal news The “tough” princess has got what it takes to lead the monarchy.

ust when Prince Charles thought the British throne would finally be his, another late contender for the crown has entered the fray in the form of his hard-working sister, Princess Anne. According to Woman’s Day’s insiders, the Queen, 93 – who has been locked away with her husband Prince Philip “despairing” at the state of the family since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made their shock exit – has had an epiphany in her twilight years and has made no secret of the fact she wishes she could pass the monarchy to more capable hands.

NATURAL LEADER

ANNE & CHARLES FIGHT FOR THE CROWN!

With the royals in disarray, the heir’s hardworking sister has put her hand up for the top job

“Anne is known as HRH Reliable among courtiers. She may not be flashy but she’s tough, kind and can always be counted on to do a good job,” says our source. “The Queen has barely noticed this in the past, but as she gets older, she’s gotten closer to Anne than ever before and realises that her family would be much better off if Anne was the leader over Charles. She can’t imagine Anne would have allowed the situation

with Harry and Meghan to get so bad. The Queen admits she does hold Charles partially responsible for that mess – for not stepping in sooner to rein them in.” Indeed, in recent years Anne, 69, has eclipsed her big brother in the sheer volume of royal engagements she’s completed. A frazzled Charles, 71, noticed he was in danger of being usurped by his younger sibling and, as one courtier dryly puts it, “pulled his finger out” to perform 521 public appearances to her 506 in 2019. “Last year, Charles seemed to realise he was in a precarious position – not only in the public’s eyes, but mainly his mother’s,” says our source. “Since then he’s mounted a full-on campaign to convince everyone he’s fit to be king, but he’s not sure he’s done quite enough to win his mother’s approval.”

RIGHT ATTITUDE Meanwhile, Anne – who has been closer to her 98-year-old father over the years than her mum – can do no wrong in the Queen’s eyes. “It’s been a horror year for the Queen, thanks to Prince Andrew’s indiscretions and Harry and Meghan causing chaos,” says

a source. “She’s come to appreciate Anne’s ‘just get on with it’ attitude. Her service to the monarchy really has been unparalleled since she was a small girl.” She’s also cool under pressure. Anne calmly handled a terrifying kidnapping in 1974, when a man hijacked her car near Buckingham Palace and demanded, while holding a gun, that she get out of the car. Instead of panicking, the princess responded, “Not bloody

likely” and later described the incident to the police as “a very irritating conversation”. “Anne’s never changed,” says a source. “She’s remained unflappable, unlike Charles who has always been a nervous soul – something that has frustrated both the Queen and Philip. “It’s because of this that they’ve largely let Anne do her own thing in her role while holding Charles at intern status.”

Anne is often by the Queen’s side at royal events.

In a move that’s shaken Charles’ confidence even further, it can be revealed the Queen is planning a no-expenses-spared bash to celebrate her only daughter’s 70th birthday in August. “Make no mistake, Anne has been escalated in status lately,” says a source. “Charles is paranoid the Queen’s going to give her more responsibility to the point where she will be seen as the future monarch in the public’s eyes.

‘Charles has a real popularity contest on his hands’ “Anne’s extremely competitive, and there’s no doubt she’ll take any chance she gets to leapfrog her brother, who she’s not hugely fond of. Anne has definitely made a point of mentioning how she’s had to step up even more since Harry and Meghan flew the coop, even turning up at Buckingham Palace events to support [Prince] William and Catherine, so she certainly has a case against her brother,” the royal insider continues. “Charles has a real popularity contest on his hands, and he’s not certain his family – even William who has been singing Anne’s praises lately – TURN PAGE FOR is in his corner.” MORE ROYALS

HARRY & MEGHAN KICKED OUT OF CANADA! The locals aren’t making the royal couple feel very welcome…

f Prince Harry and his wife Meghan thought Canada would roll out the welcome mat upon their arrival, they should probably think again. An increasing anti-Sussex undertone is beginning to appear among Canadians, just as the duke and duchess begin to throw their weight around with diva demands. It’s been reported by the local press that the couple may expect their adopted home country’s taxpayers to foot their private security bills, which experts believe could hit $8.5 million. And in a recent poll, a whopping 70 per cent of Canadians surveyed said absolutely not.

“Canadians don’t really care if Harry and Meghan are there or not – until you ask them to subsidise their lives,” says a palace insider. “Harry and Meghan are shocked by the hostile response. Meghan particularly thought she would be welcomed with open arms given she spent so much time in Toronto filming Suits, but Canadians generally aren’t particularly impressed by celebrity status.”

“Harry and Meghan have made a huge mistake. Harry is so used to getting his own way – and Meghan rapidly joined him in that attitude when she married him – that living in Canada with press just outside your gate constantly is going to be a bitter pill for him to swallow. “It wouldn’t surprise me if they were run out of town by angry locals and aggressive media interest.”

And given she had a reputation for emailing staff at 5am and had the nickname “Duchess Difficult”, it’s unlikely to be pretty. Ellen has scored a major coup from Oprah.

Talk show queens face off! When Ellen DeGeneres confirmed rumours she’d secured the first tell-all with her old friend Meghan post-Sussexit, she said, with a hint of smugness, “Sure I’m excited!” And the comment had her TV rival Oprah Winfrey seeing red.

“Oprah thought she was a shoo-in to get Harry and Meghan’s first sit-down. She’s working with Harry on a production about his mental health stuff and went to great lengths to befriend Meghan’s mum. But if Ellen really has got this interview, it’s all for nothing.”

MEGHAN’S DAD ISSUES BLACKMAIL THREAT!

t’s been almost two years since he’s spoken to his daughter on the phone, and Thomas Markle has had enough! During an interview with Good Morning Britain last week, the visibly angry 75-year-old declared, “If after this interview, if I don’t hear from somebody in 30 days, I’ll give 30 days and I’m going to try again, because 30 days is enough time to get back to me. I don’t want to sit in silence in my living room for the rest of my life, waiting for someone to call me back or get in touch with me.” Thomas insists he hasn’t heard from Harry, 35, or Meghan since their wedding in May 2018, and since then his ex-wife and Meghan’s mum Doria Ragland – with whom he was on friendly terms – has also ghosted him.

EMOTIONAL TURMOIL “This is by no means an excuse for my behaviour but I feel the emotional turmoil I have been going through has impacted my decision-making. But according to a family friend, it’s a case of too little too late for Michelle’s estranged partner Steve, 43, who is said to be furious she put their son Axel in danger. He’s been blocking her calls, having feared something like this might happen.

To the outside world, self-made millionaire Michelle had it all – a thriving business, a great partner and a beautiful son. But a source close to the celebrity fitness couple, who met and fell in love on The Biggest Loser, says their relationship has been imploding for years and Michelle’s drinking has been in part to blame. “Michelle likes a drink – it was that way even before they were in a relationship,” says the family friend. “Ironically it’s how they got together – they got drunk and hooked up – but he

But their issues really came to a head over the Christmas holidays, and after a year of Steve begging Michelle to get help, he made the decision to walk away. “The reason he stuck it out for so long was for Axel. Steve wants to be a good dad and be there for him, but he and Michelle just aren’t happy. She’s been begging him to come back to her for weeks, even promising to get help if he did, but he’s said no,” the source reveals. “He just can’t do it any more. According to an insider, Adelaide-based groom Michael Goonan was busted with a suspicious bag of white powder, leading panicked producers to send him away to undergo mandatory drug counselling.

T

On the night in question, a handful of MAFS grooms were returning from a booze-fuelled night at The Star Sydney casino when the father-of-one is said to have accidentally dropped a bag of white powder – which his fellow participants believed to be cocaine – on the floor of the CBD’s Skye Suites. “His face just turned red, he was paralysed… he didn’t know where to look!” says the source. “He came back drunk from the

While the couples enjoy a night’s stay at an expensive apartment after their big day, one bridal party member tells Woman’s Day she was appalled when she was put up at a “shabby two-star hotel”. “[It] was the pits!” she says.

GET HELP OR GET OUT Following the incident, the groom was removed from his shared room and ordered to sleep without his “wife” until he attended what the source describes as a “counselling program”, which included an extensive psychological assessment and drug and alcohol counselling. “Production weren’t having a bar of it,” says the spy. “They told him in no uncertain terms they would remove him from the show if he didn’t agree to undergo the sessions.” At the time Woman’s Day went to print, Endemol Shine Australia, which produces Married At First Sight, and Nine declined to comment, as did Michael.

But now, the beloved soap star is finally getting the happy ending he deserves with a wedding to top all weddings. In our exclusive first-look photos, Alf can be seen grinning from ear-to-ear as he walks with a glowing Martha – who is dressed in a stunning baby pink gown – down the aisle for the second time, proving happy endings can absolutely exist in soap land. Talking to Woman’s Day, the veteran actor, 76, opened up on what has been dubbed the royal television wedding of the year. “[It feels] absolutely wonderful. With no disrespect to Ailsa [Alf’s second wife], I think Alf’s back where he genuinely always wanted to be, but never in his wildest dreams did he think that it would happen... even after receiving a letter

from Martha saying she was still alive.” Suffering from borderline personality disorder, Martha, played by Belinda Giblin, 69, faked her own death – leaving Ray and their daughter Roo to grieve, before returning to the Bay decades later. “Alf and Martha have had a pretty unique journey up until now,” Ray admits. “It really is a story of second chances, forgiveness and hope. If after everything that has happened to these two they have found a way back to each other, it’s a pretty good sign for the rest of us.” So what’s next for Alf and Martha? “The good Lord only knows – or maybe the script writers have got an idea,” quips Ray. With Alf living out his dream on screen, how does Ray’s real-life wife Gilly feel about him being involved in one of the most watched weddings of the year? “She’s far happier that it’s on television than in real life,” he jokes. hen Keith Urban arrived at the Grammys last week, awaiting fans and media were shocked to see he was on his own – with his wife Nicole Kidman nowhere to be seen. And you can’t blame them – it’s rare to see him at music events without Nicole nuzzled into his side, providing photographers with countless public displays of affection. But this time, Keith, 52, who was there to present an award, looked “out of place” without Nic, also 52, and seemed uncomfortable answering questions about her whereabouts. “My wife is home with the flu,” he muttered to a reporter. “A lot of that going around.” But once inside among the rest of the A-list stars, a witness says Keith let

his guard down and told friends what was really going on. “He seemed incredibly sad and distracted. It was clear something deeper was going on. He looked visibly distressed –kind of like a defeated man,” says one onlooker backstage at LA’s Staples Center. Adds another, “He kind of fit in with the sombre mood of the night as everyone had just found out Kobe [Bryant] had died, but it was clear something else was going on with Keith.” A source close to Keith’s long-time buddy, fellow country singer Blake Shelton, who was also backstage, reveals Nicole was a no-show following a blow-up fight between the couple just hours earlier. “He told Blake how him and Nicole had a furious argument that morning over his decision to extend his Las Vegas residency,” says the insider. “Nicole ended

According to sources, this rule has slipped by the wayside as their daughters Sunday, 11, and Faith, nine, get older.’ Our Blake source reveals, “He said Nicole begged him not to add any more dates and was fuming when he went against her wishes. She accused him of constantly trying to find excuses to be apart from her.” Despite usually being the calmer partner, Keith fired up. “Her comments sent him into an uncharacteristic rage. He told her he was sick of constantly taking a back seat to her career,” says the source.

Indeed, whenever Nicole is promoting her work on a red carpet, Keith moves heaven and earth to ensure he can be supportively by her side. But lately, it looks like he’s been putting his foot down. It hasn’t gone unnoticed that he’s left her alone on the red carpet more than once these past few weeks. Adds our source, “He’s starting to realise that Nic isn’t quite so keen to pay back the favour. Regardless, he absolutely hates fighting and was a total mess by the time he was due on stage. “He seemed extremely stressed and kept frantically checking his phone throughout the ceremony. “He had to be calmed down by one of the producers before presenting as he admitted he was having some ‘personal problems at home’. “Keith left as soon as the ceremony ended.”

Forget the elephants – it’s the celebrities who were served up peanuts this year! t’s one of Ten’s highest rating shows, featuring a stack of the country’s most popular and well-regarded stars. But sources exclusively tell Woman’s Day this year’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Here! hit bargain basement, with appearance fees slashed in half – a claim Ten has denied. But, despite their protestation, an insider tells Woman’s Day, “It costs an absolute fortune to film in South Africa because of the amount of crew they need to fly out and host during and prior to the show, so this year Ten decided to cut costs elsewhere,” reveals our source, adding, “They decided to spend a lot less on talent, given the amount of applications they get during the year.” According to the insider, Ten is frequently inundated by talent managers ng fame-h hungry reality representin stars in a bid to get their clients H the cast of on the show. “Half

That way they could introduce them to audiences as presenters and hosts – it’s cost-effective,” the source adds. In 2019, comedian Nikki Osborne, 38, made a convenient cameo on a Christmas special edition of Hughesy, We Have A Problem weeks before the show premiered, while Tanya Hennessy, 33, is said to have been given “increased roles” on the network as a means of trialling her reception. Last year The Bold And The Beautiful’s Katherine Kelly Lang, 58, made a blockbuster appearance as a jungle intruder, earning herself a whopping $400,000 for her short stint. But this year’s “megastar”, Geordie Shore’s Charlotte Crosby, 29, is being paid nothing in comparison, with our insider revealing the network saved a packet by casting “fringe celebs”. Meanwhile, gossip guru Perez Hilton, 41, is said to have begged production for a spot on the show. “It was his team who originally broached the idea. They sent countless emails and blew up Ten’s phones, but they didn’t even get back to him at first,” the source adds. “No doubt we can expect to see more of Perez on Aussie TV, including Studio 10,” adds the insider, who explains that Perez was definitely lured into the jungle with “ongoing wo k opportun nities .

Celebrity news

‘I was killing myself with drinking and pills’ Jessica Simpson opens up about her experience with abuse and drugs, and the love that helped save her

T

o the world, she has presented herself as a lovable, if slightly ditzy, classic Southern blonde. Jessica Simpson won hearts as pop star Nick Lachey’s wife on the early 2000s MTV show Newlyweds, where she hit headlines for adorably botching up whether the bowl of tuna in her lap was chicken or fish. It didn’t hurt that the singer, now 39, knew her way around a catchy pop song and burned up the charts with her tune With You, which was dedicated to Nick. Even as their marriage began to disintegrate in 2005, Jessica maintained her popularity, rocketing to global stardom that same year by squeezing into teeny denim shorts to play Daisy Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard.

28 WD

Now, as a mother-of-three and married to former American footballer Eric Johnson, Jessica is finally ready to reveal there was a lot more going on behind her big Texas blowdry.

JESS’

SECRET ADDICTIONS In her memoir Open Book, out this week, she recounts in lurid detail her romances, and the incredible highs and devastating lows of her time in the spotlight, which began when she was a Christian singer who couldn’t score a gig “because she didn’t look wholesome enough”. But her rollercoaster story didn’t begin the day she became a performer. Jessica bravely recounts that she was sexually abused between the ages of six and 12 by a family friend, leading

Jess and first husband Nick found fame on Newlyweds.

to a lifetime of secret booze and drug addiction. “It would start with tickling my back, and then go into things that were extremely uncomfortable. I wanted to tell my parents. I was the victim but somehow I felt in the wrong,” she writes, adding that she finally told her parents Tina and Joe Simpson while they were driving in the car when Jessica was 12. “I told you something was happening,” Jessica remembers her mother yelling at her dad. “Dad kept his eye on the road and said nothing. We never stayed at my parents’ friends house again, but we also didn’t talk about what was said.” Tina and Joe split in 2012 after 34 years of marriage – and Joe has since reportedly come out as gay. Jessica is the first to admit her own romantic relationships have been a struggle. “[Nick and I had] anxieties about our careers that just seemed to feed off each other,” she remembers. “We had been together almost seven years when I told Nick, ‘I think I want a divorce.’ I later heard that he told the press he was blindsided. I don’t know how. At that point we weren’t even speaking to each other.

’ JOURNEY

The Dukes Of Hazzard was a big hit for the rising star.

Maybe he was just shocked that I stood up for myself. I don’t think he ever thought I would take the leap.” As soon as the ink was dry on her divorce papers, notorious ladies’ man, singer John Mayer made his own move on Jessica. “He loved me in the way that he could, and I loved that love for a very long time. Too long. It did control me,” she says. “[He] again and again told me he was obsessed with me, sexually and emotionally.” Heartbreakingly, Jessica admits she was made to feel “inadequate” in the year they were together.

‘I was mad at that bottle. At how it allowed me to stay numb’ “I was so afraid of disappointing him that I couldn’t even text him without having someone check my grammar and spelling.” Not long after they split in 2007, John infamously described her as “sexual napalm”, adding that he wanted to “quit life and snort her” – leaving Jessica utterly humiliated.

“He thought that was what I wanted to be called,” she writes. “I was floored and embarrassed that my grandmother was actually gonna read that. “A woman and how they are in bed is not something that is ever talked about. It was shocking. I erased his number. He made it easy for me to walk away”

BACK ON TRACK Jessica reveals she relied on booze and drugs to help her cope with her childhood abuse and relationship anxieties, until she got sober in November 2017 and sought therapy. “I was killing myself with drinking and pills,” she says. “Giving up the alcohol was easy. I was mad at that bottle. At how it allowed me to stay complacent and numb.” And the mum-of-three – daughter Maxwell, seven, son Ace, six, and 10-month-old baby Birdie – isn’t alone in her sobriety, with her husband of nearly six years Eric joining her for the ride. “He gave up the second I did,” she says. “It was no biggie for him. He hasn’t looked back. It’s just the way he is. He’s a very selfless and loving person, and the most amazing father on the planet.”

John was “obsessed” with Jess.

their faces and a work ethic to be proud of,” Jenny, 36, tells Woman’s Day from her family property Dalmore, which is nestled in the Stokes Bay region on the island’s north coast.

FARMING FAMILY “My husband Will’s family has been here for over 70 years working the land, and are leaders in the field of merino sheep breeding. We’re four generations, and we farm as a family,” she adds. “We lost three of our properties but our home was spared – Will’s brother Michael was on the CFS truck that day. One moment the fire was 70km away, the next he was on the phone screaming to get out. We grabbed our girls [Grace, seven, Annabelle, five, and one-yearold Matilda] and our dog Boysie and evacuated to Kingscote.” Michael fought the fires while his wife Sarah and their three kids got to a safe place. fence-fixers landed by barge onto South Australia’s fireravaged Kangaroo Island three weeks ago, their arrival brought much-needed relief to the island’s 5000-plus residents. Trapped on the island as the ferocious flames posed a deadly threat to their lives and homesteads, the locals thought they’d hit rock bottom. But during such dark and desperate times there are such things as angels – and they go by the name of The BlazeAid Army. These golden-hearted Aussies are helping our farmers get back on their feet and repair fences destroyed by the bushfires. The army – whose members are made up of hundreds of volunteers from all over the world – are the selfless heroes helping to rebuild Australia back to its former glory. And local farmer and mum-of-three Jenny Stanton can’t imagine life without them. “They’re amazing! They arrive like the cavalry, with smiles on

are grateful the Stanton boys fought hard to save their home. “Nothing can prepare you for the shock when you return – it’s gut-wrenching,” says Jenny, struggling to put on a brave face. As well as the loss of property, 4000 of their 7000 sheep along with 60 head of cattle have perished, and almost all their crops, including hectares of rolled oats produced for the domestic market, are gone.

‘They arrive like the cavalry, with smiles on their faces’ The Kangaroo Island fires destroyed around 210,000 hectares, with most of the farming land on the western side of the island burned. In total, 43,000 livestock are dead, 89 homes destroyed and the loss of wildlife is estimated to be more than one hundred million. “It’s overwhelming, but you’ve got to start somewhere, and the fences now are our priority. We lost 80km out of the 90km on the three affected farms. That’s the distance between Sydney and the Blue Mountains, or Brisbane to the Gold Coast,” says Jenny, who is a qualified agronomist. “We need the fences to manage, feed and water animals – we also need to return neighbouring stock back to where they belong. We’re determined we will rebuild.” Just a short drive from their property at the local Parndana oval, home to the local Roosters

footy team, camp BlazeAid is set up with with dozens of volunteers. United in spirit, they are staying in caravans, camper trailers, tents and swags, and are all in it for the long haul.

WORKING TOGETHER Camp coordinators Greg and Ann Stevens, who hail from the NSW mid-north coast, know their small caravan is home for at least the next six months – but they wouldn’t have it any other way. “We’ve been involved with BlazeAid since 2014 – every small gesture adds to a better outcome in the end,” says Ann. At the far end of the oval, army reservists have set up their own base camp, and have hooked up with their mates at BlazeAid to work together. “We've got people from all walks of life who wanted to lend a hand! The camaraderie is extraordinary. Each day crews go out after brekkie and then they’ll roll back into camp. Over dinner [we’ll] have a few laughs and tell stories. We’re a rare breed, that’s for sure,” adds Ann. Jenny is extremely grateful for everyone’s help. “Farmers are proudly independent by nature, and we’re always reluctant to accept help, but without BlazeAid, we’d be on our knees,” she says. “My girls and I call them our ‘fence fairies’ – we will never forget what they have done for our family. They’ve given us hope, and a reason to wake up every morning – thank you BlazeAid and thank you Australia.”

Real life “Nothing else matters when you’re out there,” says Kim about her open water swims.

After a fall left her unable to walk, Kim found freedom in the ocean t was 11.15pm. The sky was dark and the sea below Kim Chambers’ feet was pitch black. She knew the dangers that could lie beneath. The Farallon Islands off the San Francisco coast were home to scores of the world’s biggest great white sharks. But despite the freezing, choppy water, dangerous currents and the less-thaninviting inhabitants, the 42-yearold was ready. “I’d prepared not to come back,” Kim tells Woman’s Day. “I’d paid my bills and done my laundry. I didn’t know what was

going to happen and that’s what made it so exciting.” Kim, who had only been open water swimming for six years, had challenged herself to become the first woman to swim the treacherous 48km stretch from the Farallon Islands to the Golden Gate Bridge. It was a swim beset with difficulties – a week earlier her training partner Simon Dominguez had to abort his attempt after being circled by a great white. “I was fearful, but I know from experience that once you face your fears and break through

them, the feeling is so magical,” New Zealander Kim smiles. With pilot boats either side of her and friends and her mum Jo cheering her on, she dived into the darkness and began her perilous journey.

FREAK ACCIDENT It was a journey that had begun eight years earlier. Late for work, Kim slipped down some steps in her high heels, bashing her right leg at the bottom. Picking herself up, Kim had cursed herself for being so clumsy, but that was far from the end of it. Collapsing later that day, she was raced to hospital with acute compartment syndrome in her leg, which meant her nerves were dying.

Doctors told Kim she’d have less than a one per cent chance of walking unassisted. out of a paper bag,” she laughs. “But I surrounded myself with people who believed in me and suddenly I was swimming the English Channel.” Over the next four years she swam the Oceans Seven, which is a marathon challenge consisting of seven channel swims. “I almost died of jellyfish toxicity on the final one,” Kim says. “It meant I hadn’t finished in the way I’d have liked and I wanted one more. There was also a sense of being intoxicated by the challenge and even though

people were voicing concerns about the Farallones, I wanted it so badly.” Living in San Francisco this stretch of water held a special place in her heart. So on August 7, 2015, Kim, now described as one of the greatest open water swimmers, launched into the sea. “I vomited through the night swim,” she says. “I don’t know why, it might have been adrenaline, but I was very glad to see the sun come up. Suddenly it felt like such an adventure.” Kim’s training had involved six months without taking a warm shower to prepare her body for the cold temperatures. She’d also swum for hours every day to get her body swim fit again after her

“I was just 30 minutes away from amputation,” Kim remembers. “The surgeon had to slice open each side of my calf to release the pressure, and afterwards I was told I’d never walk unassisted again.” With her characteristic determination, Kim set out to prove the doctors wrong, and two years into her rehab she discovered open water swimming. “I’d been swimming in a pool but when some guys suggested swimming in San Francisco Bay, I was up for a dare,” says Kim. “I’ll never forget that day. I lit up like a Christmas tree. I found the sense of freedom I’d lost when I was identified as just a ‘patient’. ” After that Kim never looked back. “I wasn’t a great swimmer. near-death experience. And it was all worth it when, after 17 hours and 23 minutes in the water, she became the first woman to complete the challenge. “It meant the most to me of any swim. I’d had the most fears and doubts and I was crying at the end. It wasn’t the best photo finish,” she jokes. Four years on, she now features in an inspirational documentary, Kim Swims, and is contemplating her next challenge. “I’ve just got engaged,” she smiles. Bobby, 50, is also a swimmer, and the couple are planning weddings in New Zealand and the States this year. And with a fully functioning right leg, something Kim credits to swimming, she will be walking down the aisle unassisted. “At the time, my accident was the worst thing that could ever happen, but now I see it as the best,” she says with a smile.

We’ll highlight the farmers who need fencing supplies, the schools which are short of books and pencils, the yoga school that needs mats or how to plan a getaway to the region when the time is right to bolster their local tourism industry. The Rebuild Our Towns campaign is centred on the fact that practical help doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Our love and thoughts go out to every person, but actions speak louder than words, so join us to make a difference and help our heartland heal.

atching her 14-month-old son Zander gobble down his vegies and custard at dinner time is a true joy for mum Donna. Like every parent, she loves to watch her baby grow and thrive. But she knows not all babies get the best start – which is why she decided to donate her breast milk. “So far I have donated more than 229 litres of breast milk,” says the 37-year-old from Wynn Vale, SA. “It’s unbelievable.” Soon after having Zander, Donna realised she had a very healthy supply of milk – or liquid gold, as it’s often called. “I’d had friends who struggled to breastfeed and I felt very lucky that I was able to make so much milk,” she says. When Donna started to express her breast milk, using an electric pump, and freezing it, she intended it to be for Zander. “I wanted my partner Kym to be able to bottle-feed Zander so they could bond,” she says. “It’s lovely when you feed them and they wrap their fingers around your hand. I wanted Kym to have that.” Quickly Donna realised she had too much stock. “The freezer was full,” she laughs. “Some days I could get 800ml in 10 minutes. So, I Googled what to do with excess breast milk and the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood milk bank came up.” Donna called the service which, after asking a few questions, arranged a home visit. “They took away more than 14 litres on that first visit. The second time it was 12 litres. They were impressed!” she says. All milk is screened and pasteurised for safety before being distributed to hospitals in SA, NSW and Queensland, where it is used in neonatal intensive care units for premature babies. Donna says she would welcome the opportunity to do it all again. “I’d love more children, and if I can donate breast milk again I will,” she tells. “I feel very proud and blessed to be able to do this, and help so many little babies.”

FINDING IRELAND’S MADDIE MCCANN

WITHOUT A TRACE Mystery and heartache still surrounds Ireland’s youngest and longest missing child case more than 40 years on he disappearance of six-year-old Mary Boyle, dubbed Ireland’s Madeleine McCann, from her grandparents’ remote dairy farm in County Donegal continues to baffle experts almost 43 years on. The Boyle family were enjoying their annual trip to their elderly relatives’ farm in Cashelard for the St Patrick’s Day holiday when Mary vanished on March 18, 1977. Despite multiple searches and extraordinary theories that have emerged about what might have happened to Mary – Ireland’s youngest and longest missing person case – her body has never been found and the investigation remains open. Mary was playing outside with her identical twin sister Ann,

older brother Paddy and two cousins after lunch when she followed her uncle Gerry as he set off across the boggy fields to return a ladder he’d borrowed from a neighbouring farm.

‘I want to believe Mary is still alive... I have to live that way’ At some point on the way to the neighbour’s house, Gerry told Mary to turn around and go back. The walk shouldn’t have taken more than five minutes, but sadly the youngster was never seen again. Mary’s mother Ann Boyle recalls she was washing the dishes inside the house around

3.30pm when her father asked her to check on the children. “I went as far as the door and I could only see a couple of them,” she recalls. “I went over then as far as the gate and I said, ‘Where’s Mary?’ The other four children were there, and they said they hadn’t seen her since dinner time. I panicked right away because she didn’t know the area.” Family, police and scores of neighbours scoured the 410-metre stretch of land between the only two houses in the area, in a desperate search that escalated into a trawl of bog holes, lakes, streams and the countryside beyond. But Mary’s body has never been found. The little girl, who was last seen wearing a hand-

knitted lilac cardigan, brown jeans and black wellington boots disappeared without a trace. Several bizarre theories about what happened to Mary have emerged over the decades, including the involvement of sadistic child killer Robert Black, who was convicted of murdering four young

Recently, Ann dropped a bombshell when she called for an inquest into her sister’s death, claiming Mary was killed by someone known to her in order to cover up a string of abuse. “I believe Mary had a secret, and because M y as fei

Turn up the heat on your summer beauty routine

he sun is out and so are shorter hemlines and swimsuits – so now’s the time to pay a little more attention to your body. We’re talking regular hair removal, exfoliation and hydration to keep us feeling our best. Here are some simple ways to get soft, smooth and glowing skin.

If you like the exfoliating power of alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) in your facial skincare, they make quick work of bumps on the back of your arms and scaly shins, too. Gadgets and lotions can’t replace good nutrition and exercise to smooth thighs, but used regularly with a healthy lifestyle can help make a difference. You don’t need to be as careful as you would when applying faux tan either – just pop some of the washable formulas on a glove, buff and go.

TOP DETOX

HEALTH BENEFITS

In Week 2 of our Summer Shape-up Guide, explore the joy of cleansing – and more! till feeling a little sluggish after the festive season? Going on a detox can help your body reset and rid itself of any harmful toxins that could be lingering. We all have a natural detoxification system, with our body removing toxins through the liver, sweat and urine. However, following a detox health plan – clean, lean foods, drinking a lot more water, ditching processed foods and beverages and using detoxspecific products – can enhance the process. And the best bit about kicking toxins? A number of resulting health benefits.

S

Words: Gabriella Del Grande.

INCREASED ENERGY

Detoxing can up your energy levels – and it’s as simple as cutting out sugar, caffeine and saturated fats from your diet. Replacing those nasties with fresh fruits and vegetables means you’ll get a natural energy boost without that horrendous crash that comes later in the day.

Try drinking warm water with ingredients like mint, lemon or rosemary. It will help restore your hydration levels – another important part of keeping your energy up.

REDUCED INFLAMMATION

Inflammation is our body’s response to any kind of injury, infection or harmful substance like bacteria. In some cases it can lead to chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer and arthritis. In the instance of diet, eating foods your body disagrees with, like gluten, dairy, sugar and trans fats can trigger an inflammatory response in your gut, and over time release more and more toxins into your blood stream. This causes the inflammation to spread around your body and can result in chronic illnesses such as the ones mentioned. But you can reduce inflammation through eating detox-friendly foods rich in antioxidants such

as vegies, fruits, spices and wholegrains. Clean foods like these kill off the inflammatory toxins in your blood and also support your liver’s detoxification process. Regular exercise is also a fantastic way to reduce inflammation as part of your detox. Try to get in at least 30 minutes of walking, running, weights or yoga a day.

IMPROVED MOOD

Consuming foods like sugars and fats can lead to feeling lethargic and give you an increased risk of depression and other mood disorders. In fact, a 2017 study published in the Scientific Reports journal identified a greater risk of depression in men who nts consumed significant amoun of sugar in their diet. Researchers in London ods found a diet rich in wholefoo like fruits, vegies and fish can lower your risk of depression in middle age.

LPING HAND DIMG A DESNW ROECIiC product can help your body ditch more of those toxins. OptiSlim’s detox range aims to reset and restore your body in just 48 hours, in conjunction with its detox meal plans. T he Coconut lemon cleansing drink ($24.95) kickstarts weight loss, boosts metabolism and reduces bloating. Or try the prickly pear tablets ($24.95 for 120 tablets), with garcinia cambogia, coconut extract and green coffee bean to provide weight loss support. opt s m com au for more Visit optisli info rchase. MICRO MOVEMENT WORKOUT

A hWeYaOtUh!y NE

It turns out minimum effort exercises can actually have maximum impact!

pent too much time sitting on your toosh over the holidays, only moving to grab the biscuit tin? We hear you. And while all that reaching totally counts as “arm work” (hey, the tin’s heavy – or it used to be) what you need is a workout that acts fast. That’s where Hamelin D’abell, aka “the body sculptor” comes in. His micro move workouts (hamelindabellmethod.com) can change the most stubborn body shape in mere weeks. “These moves have a deeper focus on the more intrinsic and smaller muscles, promoting a sleeker, tighter and more refined physique,” he says. Here’s how…

Words: Catriona Innes, Gabriella Del Grande.

STEP 1

THE ARM SLIMMER

TARGETS: UPPER ARMS, SHOULDERS Stand tall, with both arms extended to the side at shoulder height, palms facing upwards. Slowly twist palms to the back, and then slowly twist them forwards and up to the ceiling. Do this 30 times. You’ll want to drop your arms – don’t!

1

2

3

STEP 2

THE FIRE HYDRANT

TARGETS: GLUTES, OUTER THIGHS, INNER THIGHS, OBLIQUES, WAIST Begin on all fours, then stretch out your right leg until it’s completely straight. Move your right leg so it stretches over your left. Kick it out to the right. Repeat 25 times. Switch legs.

1

STEP 3

THE EXPRESS TONER

TARGETS: INNER THIGHS, ABS, ARMS Stand with legs apart, arms out to the side at shoulder height (for fast results, hold 1-2kg hand weights). Lift your left leg across to the right side, lowering your hand to touch your knee. Do the same on the other leg. Repeat for 60 seconds. You got this!

1

2 3 T IP!

Want to work out with some extra resistance? Try using ankle or wrist weights.

Skip the equipment like Kate Bosworth for an effective bodyweight workout.

FOODS THAT TONE YOU!

It’s It s not just exercise that can make your body look and feel firmer…

ALMOND BUTTER High in protein, almond butter actually works to suppress the appetite and preserve lean muscle mass. There’s also research to suggest t t h ving a high-protein breakfast can trigger positive changes in appetite hormones, which makes losing weight easier. So slather some of this on some wholegrain toast or add to a smoothhie in the morning!

STEP 4

PEARS

THE THIGH BURNER

Try packing a pear into your lunch bag. The fruit is a strong source of pectin, a soluble fibre that helps maintain digestive tract health so you can say bye-bye to bloating. Soluble fibre foods like pears also help the body block fats that would otherwise be digested and absorbed.

TARGETS: OUTER THIGHS, OUTER HIPS, GLUTES Begin on your hands and knees. Lift and stretch your right leg out until it’s at hip level, at a slight angle. Lower it to starting position. Do 25 each leg.

1 2 3

STEP 5

THE BACK TONER

TARGETS: BACK, CORE, GLUTES Lie on your stomach, hands folded behind your head, with legs straight and feet together. Slowly arch off the ground, without straining your lower back, until you’re balancing on the hip and stomach area. Hold for 20 seconds. Repeat three times.

1

2 3

FLAXSEED Flaxseeds contain a whole bunch of lignans – a plaant compound that helps balance hormones. This helps with weight loss, as any imbalance of hormones can contribute to weight gain, fluid retention and bloating. Add to a freshly squeezed juice or sprinkle into your baking.

PINEAPPLE This sweet summer treat contains digestive enzyme bromelain, which can reduce bloating, gas and indigestion – meaning a flatter tummy!

FIND YOUR ULTIMATE WORKOUT Pick the right exercise to smash your specific fitness goals which can happen in strength TIGHTEN training, the stretching and FOR SLIMMER stabilisation poses in these THAT TUMMY LEGS classes challenge the body with TRY: PILATES TRY: ENDURANCE CARDIO

To slim and tone your legs, you need to burn calories and you can do this by doing cardiofocused exercises like walking, swimming and running. Try and do endurance versions of these exercises, rather than quick bursts, with running a prime example. “Distance running ‘eats’ into the muscle a little bit when you run for 90 minutes or longer,” Tom Holland, author of training guide Beat The Gym says. “It’s more about endurance than muscle growth and may work better for a woman concerned about bigger thighs.” Walking through soft sand at the beach can be a great way to tone and firm your thighs, too.

Words: Gabriella Del Grande.

TO SHRINK YOUR BOOTY TRY: HOT YOGA

Practising yoga postures and breathing in a 35°C or above room for 90 minutes allows the body to stretch, detoxify and tone. “Rather than building up specific areas, 62 WD

the overall goal of achieving new ranges of motion,” strength coach Jesse Irizarry explains.

BOOST YOUR BEHIND

TRY: STRENGTH TRAINING If you’re after some more curves and a perky backside, make lower body strength training your best friend. Try adding two to three sets of squats, lunges, step-ups and glute bridges to your total body workout routine at least twice a week. For extra burn and lift, try putting an elastic “booty band” (you can find cheap packs online) just above your knees when squatting, as it creates more resistance. You can even put one around your ankles and do jumping jacks or standing glute kickbacks, where you stand up straight, shifting all your weight onto one leg, then kick your opposite leg back behind you, keeping it straight. Repeat on the other side. Try 20 reps of each as part of your regular routine.

While stomach fat is usually best combated with a healthy, lean diet, Pilates – either mat or Reformer – can also help flatten your tum by getting those core muscles firing. “Pilates puts you in positions that force you to learn to engage your midsection,” says Jesse. “As you advance to harder exercises, you will burn the unwanted belly fat.”

AVOIDING BULKY MUSCLES TRY: BARRE

Get a long and lean look with the small but mighty movements of a barre class. “Barre workouts target both large and small muscle groups,” says instructor Berns Osias. “We push the muscles to their limits then stretch them out. That’s how you achieve the long, lean body.” “Barre uses very light weights and small ‘pulsing’ movements, which do not promote muscle growth since you’re not breaking down muscle fibres,” Tom adds.

Spotlight on... Wondering what all the fuss is about with these tools? Here’s why they’re a crucial part of any exercise routine… What is foam rolling? “Foam rolling uses selfmassage techniques to lengthen and reduce build-up of tension in the muscles,” says director of Flow Athletic, Ben Lucas. The roller itself is a lightweight cylinder of compressed foam. Rollers come in different sizes and textures – some have nodules to really get into the muscle, while others are smooth and less intense on the muscles.

How do you use them?

A-listers including actress Emma Roberts can’t get enough of barre.

Start by pinpointing the sore area of your muscle or the area you want to target. “Slowly lower your body onto the targeted area so it’s centred above the roller,” says Ben. “Hold it there for 20 to 30 seconds. You may

feel some discomfort, but you shouldn’t be feeling pain. The pressure alone will be beneficial, but you can also slowly roll back and forth over the target area to release, too. You can do this on your arms, legs, shoulders, glutes and back.” Avoid rolling your neck or lower back as it may push your vertebrae around and cause damage.

What are the benefits? Benefits include relief of muscle tension and tightness, reduced inflammation and an increased range of joint motion. “For those who want long lean legs, it’s also a step

in the right direction for that,” Ben says. “Of course you need a good diet and to exercise as well, but flushing [out toxins from your body] with a roller is helpful, too.”

How often should you roll? Ben says you can do it daily if you’d like to, otherwise two to three times a week is fine. “[Use it] pre-workout for mobility or post-workout for recovery,” he adds. “But if you can only choose one, use it postworkout to help avoid delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS).”

Travel The Tropical Light exhibit ends on April 30 so get in quick!

CITY OF LIGHTS

ter er a sp spectacularr Darrwin sunnset e I make my way to Civic Park and the 2.5km world-first city-wide Bruce Munro: Tropical Light exhibition. English-born artist Bruce has always adored Australia, especially after a road trip with his wife from NSW to the NT in 1992. Known for his award-winning artworks such as Uluru’s Field of Light, the self-guided walk takes in eight large-scale illuminated sculptures, and the star of the show is the Green Flash by the Old Town Hall ruins. The spectacle captures the rare moment during the setting and rising of the sun when the light separates out into different colours causing a green flash. Bruce experienced it on his road trip and recreates it using fibre optics. Local artists’ works peppered along the way are an added bonus.

WINE & DINE

Feeling parched and peckish after my night light walk, I dine at Darwin’s busy waterfront precinct – a hub of cool pubs, bars and restaurants. And Wharf One is a winner! Darwin is a city that supports the arts, and at this eatery I love that they’ve created a Tropical Lights Signature Feast tasting menu to celebrate the new exhibition. Crispy skin Humpty Doo barramundi and Crocodile & lemon myrtle spring rolls are just a few of the mouthwatering mains.

GUIDE TO Immersive, once-in-a-lifetime experiences in the hot and steamy Top End win over WD’s RUTH McCARTHY

Cool off at one of Litchfield National Park’s swim spots.

DARWIN alking along Darwin airport’s tarmac to the terminal, the first thing that hits me is the heat – but it’s Darwin’s wet season! Think of the humidity and bursts of rain you get with sunny spells in Bali and Fiji. Turns out Darwin’s our Aussie equivalent. Arriving at the decadent Hilton Hotel in the heart of the city, I collect my room key and explore. Checking out the hotel’s facilities, complete with an outdoor pool, gym and cocktail bar, I’m tempted to while away the afternoon there. But although Darwin is a small city in comparison to my Sydney home, its friendly, quirky streets have heaps to offer. A good selection of shops, cafes, bars, restaurants and art galleries, not to mention a glorious walk along the Esplanade and Bicentennial Park, can easily fill hours of exploration. But what I’m most excited about is Darwin’s newest cultural attraction – Bruce Munro: Tropical Light exhibition (left).

W

WHAT A CROC While the NT is vast, there’s so much you can explore within a stone’s throw from the city. I opt for a day trip with Wallaroo Tours to take in Litchfield National Park. Hopping on the bus with our informative tour guide, I know I’m in for a treat when just 30 minutes in we stop for a stubby and a selfie at the Humpty Doo Hotel – the famous watering hole featured in Crocodile Dundee. Then it’s onwards to the Adelaide River for a private jumping crocodile cruise. The sheer power, size and speed of these magnificent wild animals as they rise from the water and snap their jaws on the chicken carcass snack dangled on string is incredible. I am speechless… and that’s saying something! Seeing these ancient creatures is an experience I’ll never forget – and the 400 photos I take during the one-hour trip makes sure of it.

ONE LAST STOP-OFF

Th next day, I hhave jjust enough time to The go on one last adventure – Crocosaurus Cove. For the daredevils, you can go into the Cage of Death and be submerged with one of the giant crocs including 5.5m long Axel. Sadly I don’t have time but get snap happy again as I learn about the scaly species. I even have a pat and hold of 18-month-old Fluffy! All too soon, my trip is over, but one thing’s for sure – my tropical adventures at the Top End have only just begun. WD 65

Instant noodles made fancy! CELEB CHEF ADAM LIAW REVEALS HOW TO MAKE AN AUTHENTIC RAMEN ON A BUDGET Ramen has five elements: soup, noodles, oil, tare (seasoning) and toppings. Make sure you include all of them to turn your instant noodles into proper ramen. For noodles with a flavourful soup, choose an instant noodle made specifically for soup dishes like Maggi Fusian’s Soupy Noodles, as the seasoning is made to suit a larger volume of water. For a stronger flavour, use a little less water than the packet recommends to produce a thicker broth. Get creative with your toppings. Eggs, sliced pork, fishcake, broccoli – whatever o rules with ramen. Enjoy!

The anima Whisperer AMANDA DEE WARREN Australia’s topp pet psychic

AMANDA SAYS Actor Vin Diesel’s dog Roman can be goofy when he wants to be but that absolutely suits Vin, who also likes to goof around at times. Roman’s a typical mastiff breed and shows no fear of anything, with a strong and loyal temperament. Roman’s personality is quite controlled and complex – he speaks in a very intelligent manner with a nature that you look up to and show respect to. Roman doesn’t just talk about Vin but also about being a family dog, and taking that role very seriously. “Dad includes me in everything he can,” he says. Roman tells me they connected straight away and Vin immediately saw something very special in him. I feel Vin had been looking for a while to find the right type of dog for him. “Me and dad are two peas in a pod, that’s for sure,” says Roman. “I will always be right by his side no matter what is happening pp g in his life.”

JENNY BLUME predicts your destiny for FEB 3-9

FEB 20 – MAR 20

Leo

JUL 24 – AUG 23

Opportunity is swirling, so set your sights high and believe in yourself! Conversations may be intense, but they could lead to breakthroughs, not just at work, but financially and personally as well. Sunday’s emotional full moon might even bring a reconciliation – or a heartfelt declaration might take you by surprise.

Virgo

AUG 24 – SEP 23

With Mars boosting the pace, there’s no lounging around for you. Expect the phone to ring hot with gossipy news, invitations or even an offer of work. On the health front, a fresh approach could work wonders as autumn approaches. For gardeners, anything planted under Friday’s fertile moon should thrive.

As feelings are magnified, couples may find themselves drawing closer together, while singles might view someone in a new light – a friend might even become a lover. Sunday’s dynamic full moon could propel you into a more proactive health phase as well and others will follow your lead.

Aries

Libra

MAR 21 – APR 20

SEP 24 – OCT 23

Your multitasking abilities are impressive, but slow down as the weekend approaches. Let your mind drift. With Neptune stimulating your imagination, exciting dreams could crystallise. If you can’t spend some lazy time in a deckchair, get a massage or take a long walk.

Your social sector’s heating up, so cast those worries aside and amp up the fun! Friendships formed through February might be fated and as a spin-off, your networking skills could lead to more work. Sunday’s full moon could reveal someone’s wild side.

Taurus

Scorpio

APR 21 – MAY 21

OCT 24 – NOV 22

Annoyed by someone’s behaviour? Stewing on things will only make you cranky, so speak up. If energy levels are flagging, organise a few tests, then reassess your diet. Even simple changes could make a difference, and as the pace increases you’ll want to feel your best.

Changes to your home or relationships may throw you initially, but don’t panic – your next phase is ready to be mapped out. If a local club or study course has caught your eye, make a few enquiries and set the wheels in motion. Use it or lose it!

Gemini

Sagittarius

MAY 22 – JUN 21

NOV 23 – DEC 22

Opinions and feelings are flying around this week. Someone’s comments might get you steamed up, but they might also spur you into action. If you’ve fallen into a rut, schedule a brainstorming session with a friend, then burn off some fuel with an active weekend.

A few special touches around your home could make a difference. Some Archers might even repaint or create art. As your sensitivity increases, why not reassess chemicals as well? For singles, Saturday’s moon could produce sparks, but don’t come on too strong.

Cancer

Capricorn

JUN 22 – JUL 23

As your thoughts turn to the future, inventive new strategies could take shape. Canny Crabs might even dream up a money-making enterprise, or an investment opportunity could hit the radar. Treat yourself to a massage or rejuvenating beauty treatment towards the weekend, then prepare for compliments!

DEC 23 – JAN 20

As Venus shimmies into your home sector, beautiful objects may take on an added shine. Furnishings or even a whole new abode could send you into flights of fantasy. Sunday’s extravagant full moon could bring a reality check. If finances are an issue, it might be just what you need. WD 79

Black Comedy

Season premiere

WEDNESDAY, 9PM, ABC + ABC IVIEW The fourth but sadly final series continues the witty, wacky and altogether unapologetic comedic exploration of what it means to be black in modern-day Australia. In this episode we meet a “full-on Murri” who has very strong opinions on how blackfellas should and shouldn’t behave. Meanwhile, one sketch introduces a couple of cousins who are considering getting to know each other a lot better than perhaps they should!

Q+A

Our favourite guilty pleasure is back for its fourth season and it appears everyone is still finding it hard to get along. As the crew leave New York City and their humdrum office jobs to make way for sundrenched parties at their summer house in Montauk, the group of friends must learn to get along, especially after a shocking proposal rocked everyone last season. But a new addition throws the alliances into disarray and causes a rift between the girls. And while the setting is picture perfect, inside the house it’s everything but! We guarantee you’ll be addicted in the first five minutes.

Super Bowl 2020 Don’t miss! MONDAY, 9.35PM, ABC It’s the show that can be equal parts infuriating and fascinating to watch. But it’s also the only program that gathers politicians, personalities and comedians in one room, presses record and allows us to view the madness that unfolds. Returning for 2020 with a new host, former The Project star Hamish Macdonald (inset), the new series kicks off with a bushfires special, which will be taped live from the NSW rural town of Bega. It promises to be a hard-hitting but poignant episode. 80 WD

We sit down with three of Australia’s biggest

Jack Vidgen

Vanessa Amorosi What made you sign up for Eurovision – Australia Decides? Last year I was in a writing session with friends and we were halfway through this song and all three of us were like, “Oh my god, this is a Eurovision song!” and that’s when I first started looking into it. There are not many places I can go on TV where you can create such a magical moment in three minutes. Did you have to chase after this opportunity yourself or were you approached? I’ve been approached for years but I really think it took this song to inspire me. I don’t write great songs all the time – it’s one in 50 songs that stand out – so I finally approached SBS this year because I have a really great song. Are you nervous about the fact that Australia will be voting to save you or evict you? I think as it gets closer maybe, but I spend so much time on the 82 WD

stage I feel really comfortable on there and I think Australia should vote for the performance they’re moved by. I hope I’m that performance. Can you tell me a bit about your performance at all? It’s killing me, but we’re keeping it all under wraps. I’m definitely coming up with some pretty wacky ideas – it’s a little “out there” but I’m excited, hopefully it works! Do you have a favourite performance from past Eurovision song contests? Kate Miller-Heidke – that was straight art. When I first saw it I was like, “Holy sh*t!” What do you think of the backlash Australia has been receiving around participating? I think it’s such a big thing for Europe, they take it very seriously but why wouldn’t they want everyone to get involved? It just makes it bigger and better!

Y ’ just j t come off ff A i ’ G T You’ve America’s Gott Talent and you’re going straight into another show – how are you feeling about it all? I’m feeling good – it’s been a really nice reception [AGT] – and I’m ready to go again! Why Eurovision? For the past couple of years I’ve been in awe of Eurovision. I started watching it when Conchita [Wurst] won it and that was a big thing for me. She was so free and liberated and she was breaking down social barriers in an artistic way. So seeing that and now being one of the 10 competing for Australia is pretty crazy. Are you nervous to be going back in front of the Australian public again? It’s always a little nerve-racking when you do something like this, but I’m trying to focus more

stars who are singing it out to represent our nation in Rotterdam on the performance side of it. I’ve written my song I Am King I Am Queen, which I’m super proud of and I love singing it. Can you give us any details? I want to make it a surprise – it’s all still coming together, but it’s coming together really beautifully. It’s different to anything I’ve done before. What’s it like going up against established singers like Vanessa and Casey? It’s insane to be on that line-up. There are people in it I’ve loved since I was little and there are people like Diana [Rouvas, Voice winner] who I’ve known for years – it’s going to be such a family vibe. If you were to win, how would you like to present yourself to the viewers? It will be carrying the message of my song – and it’s a very reflective song and it’s also very liberating and freeing. Tell us why you wanted to do Eurovision… It’s such a great thing to be a part of and I fell in love with the song, which is called Proud, and I thought if nothing comes from this at least people get to hear this amazing song. How does it feel going up against Vanessa and Montaigne and the other great artists? It’s very nerve-racking, but it’s exciting to be a part of something so special. It’s great for Australian music and there are so many great artists of all genres and I guess that’s what Eurovision wants! You’ve been through the process before where viewers vote for you [Australian Idol, I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!) – are you a glutton for punishment? Haha – it’s always nerve-racking but it’s such a beautiful song. It’s a celebration – how often do you get to see a bunch of artists like this in one setting?

THE DEVIL UPSTAIRS by Anthony O’Neill

EUROVISION – AUSTRALIA DECIDES LIVE Saturday, 7.30pm, SBS

Do you have much of a creative say with your performance? To a certain extent – I want it to look amazing and I want to feel amazing. I’m really nervous about what I’m going to wear, though! Is there a past performance that’s stuck out for you or you’ve looked to for inspiration? I love Euphoria [by Loreen] from 2012. It was so emotive and such a beautiful song – it was simple in a way yet mesmerising. Kate Miller-Heidke was on a rotating stick last year – can we expect anything like that? No. I won’t be doing any tricks like that! If you are chosen, what would you hope to get out of the experience? I haven’t thought that far ahead! It’d be amazing if I get to go and sing a beautiful song about being proud of who you are and overcoming your fears and challenges – that’s kind of the ethos of my life.
