OUR HISTORY The Robinsons story begins on 29th September 1838. After a successful twelve-year period as the landlord of the Unicorn Inn on Lower Hillgate, William Robinson took the step of leasing the Inn. It is on the foundations of this Inn that Robinsons Unicorn Brewery stands today nearly 200 years later.

THE STORY OF ROBINSONS BREWERY IS VERY SPECIAL AND ONE THAT WE ARE VERY PROUD TO BE A PART OF.

William Robinson Managing Director, Robinsons Brewery (Pub Division)

William continued to serve the finest ale to Stockport for 9 years from the Unicorn Inn until his eldest son, George, took over the reins in 1849. It was over the following years that the first Robinsons’ ale was brewed. Whilst George ran the Unicorn Inn, it was his younger brother Frederic who helped take their passion for beer and brewing to the next level. Taking over the pub in 1859, Frederic purchased a warehouse to the rear of the pub so that their brewing capacity could be expanded, resulting in Robinsons’ ale becoming available to many pubs in and around Stockport, and helping to establish Robinsons as an important regional family brewer.

|7

In order to control the quality of conditions in which the ale was served, Frederic made the decision to buy public houses in the area. Between 1878 and his death in 1890 he established 12 exclusive outlets for Robinsons’ ale, starting what would eventually grow into an estate of more than 250 pubs across the North West, Cumbria and Wales.

Frederic and Emma Robinson with Emma, Eleanor, Mary and William

Frederic died on 6th February 1890 and the business was passed to his widow Emma who was a determined woman; important as she now owned the brewery ‘lock, stock and barrel’. With the help of her son, William, Robinsons would continue to prosper and grow as it entered the 20th century.

Bells Mash Tun

With beer volume and demand at an all-time high, Emma and William Robinson began to invest heavily in the brewhouse with the introduction of fermenting vessels, a conditioning tank room, and their first bottling line. They also staged the first of several business acquisitions with the purchase of John Heginbotham Ltd and the Borough Brewery in Stalybridge on 1st April 1915, increasing Robinsons’ pub estate to a total of 42. In 1920, Frederic Robinson Limited was created.

|9

Over the next decade William and his children - Frederic, John and Cecil - would continue to strengthen the company with the construction of a new brewhouse in 1929. The pub estate continued to expand and by William’s death in 1933, Frederic Robinson Limited owned 133 pubs across the North West.

The first Welsh house – The Black Lion Llanfair TH – was bought in 1943 and by the late 1970s Robinsons owned around 300 public houses across the North West and Wales. This process of growth by acquisition has continued since then, with the most recent addition being the acquisition of Individual Inns in 2019.

Brewery Draymen

October 1975 marked the first bottling at our Unicorn Packaging Centre in Bredbury. All Robinsons’ beers are transferred from Unicorn Brewery to UPC for packaging and distribution. Robinsons’ bottled ales such as Old Tom, Unicorn, Dizzy Blonde and TROOPER now enjoy worldwide distribution, a fact that would no doubt have made Frederic proud if he was alive today.

Church Inn

Like the generations before them, the Robinson family continues its brewing legacy with members of the sixth generation continuing to play a vital role in all aspects of the day-to-day running of the company.

DESPITE NEARLY BEING 200 YEARS OLD, ROBINSONS’ ETHOS CONTINUES TO BE THE SAME - BRILLIANT PUBS, BRILLIANT BEER AND BRILLIANT PEOPLE.

Joint Managing Directors, Oliver & William Robinson
