Bordeaux, a revered wine region in southwestern France, stands as a testament to centuries of viticultural tradition and excellence. Its reputation as one of the world's foremost wine-producing regions is well-deserved, with Bordeaux wines holding a special place in the hearts of connoisseurs and collectors.

Bordeaux's winemaking heritage dates back to Roman times, but it truly came into prominence in the 17th century when Dutch engineers drained marshlands, improving the region's vineyard potential. Bordeaux is famous for its exceptional red blends, often featuring Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The diversity of terroirs across Bordeaux's subregions, including the Left Bank and Right Bank, creates an array of wine styles, from the structured and tannic wines of Pauillac to the lush, Merlot-driven wines of SaintÉmilion.

The region also produces exceptional white wines, notably dry whites made from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle, as well as world-renowned sweet wines like Sauternes.

Bordeaux's classification system, established in 1855, ranks its top châteaux, including iconic names like Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Margaux. These wines are often regarded as benchmarks of quality and luxury.

Bordeaux's rolling vineyard landscapes, historic châteaux, and time-honoured winemaking techniques make it an enduring symbol of the art and science of wine production. A visit to Bordeaux is not just a journey through vineyards but a pilgrimage to the heart of the wine world.

Burgundy, often referred to as Bourgogne in French, is famous for its exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. CHAMPAGNE

Champagne, a region in northeastern France, is synonymous with luxury, celebration, and the world's most famous sparkling wine. Its sparkling wine, also named Champagne, has become a symbol of elegance and festivity worldwide.

Champagne's unique terroir, characterized by chalky soils and a cool climate, is perfectly suited for producing high-quality sparkling wine. The primary grape varieties used in Champagne production are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. The region is divided into several key subregions, including the Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs, and Vallée de la Marne, each contributing distinct characteristics to the final blends.

The production of Champagne follows the traditional méthode champenoise, a labour-intensive process involving secondary fermentation in the bottle, which creates the effervescence and complexity the wine is celebrated for.

Champagne's prestige is further exemplified by iconic houses like Dom Pérignon, Krug, and Moët & Chandon, which have perfected the art of blending and aging to create exquisite cuvées. Additionally, there are numerous smaller, family-owned producers known as "grower Champagnes" that craft exceptional and unique expressions of the region.

Champagne is not just a wine; it's an experience. It's the sparkling wine of choice for celebrations, toasts, and moments of joy worldwide. A visit to the Champagne region offers an opportunity to explore the historic cellars, picturesque vineyards, and, of course, to savour the world's most famous bubbly.

LAWSON'S DRY HILLS RIESLING

Lawson’s Dry Hills - Marcus Wright

While at university studying biochemistry, Marcus acquired a love of good wine from friends who were passionate about New Zealand’s ‘Wine Options’ competition. After a stint as a research scientist he decided to combine his science background and newfound love of wine by getting into the wine industry proper. He began in Gisborne as a cellar-hand for Montana and then moved to Auckland as their Cellarmaster.  Next, he headed to Chile to work the 2000 vintage for Vina San Pedro and then to the Loire Valley to work with Jacques Lurton, making Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc for the UK market.

Marcus returned to NZ in 2001 to work with the small team at Lawson's Dry Hills and he has a passion for the company’s flagship, Sauvignon Blanc.

One of Portugal's standout contributions to the wine world is Port wine, produced in the Douro Valley. The aging process in oak barrels gives Port its distinctive flavours and character.

Beyond Port, Portugal is renowned for its table wines, especially in regions like the Dao, Bairrada, and Alentejo. Vinho Verde, a refreshing and slightly effervescent wine from the north, is a unique and popular choice, often made from Alvarinho and Loureiro grapes.

The country also takes pride in its long history of winemaking, with some of its vineyards dating back to Roman times. Portugal's winemakers embrace traditional methods and a wealth of native grape varieties, resulting in an array of distinctive, terroir-driven wines.

BON COURAGE SHIRAZ

Bon Courage- Jacques Bruwer

Jacques Bruwer, born in 1966, literally grew up in the vineyards, so it came as no surprise that he decided to follow in his father´s footsteps. After completing school, he studied wine-making at Elsenburg Agricultural College in Stellenbosch. In those days, the 10 best students of the Cellar Technology course were allocated a bloc of Chardonnay grapes to work with. “It turned out to be a very significant experience”, he recalls. “My father always said that to him the ultimate in wine-making was to produce a ’Champagne’ in the traditional way and that is what I decided to do with my block of Chardonnay.”

After studying the science of winemaking for several years, he gained further practical experience in both Germany and France and then, in 1990, joined his father on the family farm. With regard to both the latest equipment and vinification techniques, Jacques is in the forefront of innovation. He does not believe in just copying others. “If you copy you will always be second best. I am not a guy who likes to do the same thing year after year. I always embrace a fresh challenge.”
