A very warm welcome to our summer edition of Headlines! As we move towards the holiday season hopefully some fine weather will give us all the opportunity to boost trade.

As families come together your outdoor areas can really come into their own during the summer months, providing a happy and safe place for customers to spend some eagerly anticipated time together.

The summer of sport sees the return of Wimbledon, which runs from 3rd to 16th July, the Tour de France from 1st– 23rd July and the roar of the British Grand Prix on Sunday 9th July.

The151st Open Championship from 16th to 23rd July takes centre stage at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. For cricket fans, the final 3 tests of the Ashes should see an exciting conclusion on home ground in July.

Following the success of the Lionesses in the 2022 Euros the FIFA Women’s World Cup provides a wonderful stage for England to bring home more silverware from 20th July to 20th August.

Make sure you maximise your profits during all the big sports fixtures by keeping chillers and back bars fully stocked with all the popular summer drinks.

Beer lovers can enjoy the ever-popular Great British Beer Festival from 1st to 5th August and our category advice focuses on our wellloved Great British beers. A major focal point for incremental sales is the Summer Bank Holiday on Monday 28th August, look out for our useful tips on how to attract customers to your venue.

DUTY REFORM - 1ST AUGUST 2023

As announced in the 2023 Spring Budget, the Government will be implementing a new alcohol duty system from 1 August 2023. This represents the biggest reform of alcohol duties for more than 140 years and this initial increase is the highest imposed in decades. We are not supportive of this, which is widely felt across the trade, but we must implement these changes, nonetheless. The new legislation will create standardised bands across all types of alcoholic products, with all tax rates calculated based on the classification of the product and litres of alcohol it contains. As a result of these changes, we will be altering our pricing to reflect the cost of duty, and these new prices will be effective as from 1st August 2023.

WINE & SPARKLING CHANGES:

SPIRIT/FORTIFIED & BEER EXAMPLES:

As you can see from the above the only winners are sparkling wines below 14.5%, which will be coming down in price, and draught beers, which will not be increasing in price. We are working closely with our suppliers and over the next few months we will be introducing a selection of lower ABV products to help offset some of these increases. What are pins?

Pins are smaller containers for cask conditioned ale. Containing 4.5 gallons of ale, they are half the size of a traditional 9 gallon rkin. This means you only need to sell 12 pints a day to maintain quality (rather than 24 when using rkins), which is vital for keeping your ale drinkers happy.

Why and when should I use pins vs firkins?

There are 3 reasons to stock pins:

Pins are not always the best option for your venue

If you sell a full rkin every 3 days you do not need to switch to pins – however, you may want to add more choice to your range and pins are a great way of doing that.
