2 The paternal role of the architect The architect is only the curator. It sanctifies and celebrates a phenomenon that precedes its involvement, it has complete authorship because it is his intervention that recognizes and makes possible the appreciation of the subject, but the subject is in itself authentic with or without an architect. It is this older authenticity, which originates from the events and social circumstances of the past, that gives weight to the subject.

REDESIGN
A PROJECT FOR THE CITY OF PADUA ”This work is not the explanation of the analogous city also because we do not believe that there are explanations.” Aldo Rossi This thesis work stems from a dual will, the first specific of wanting to develop a project within a forgotten area of the city, and the second collective of wanting to offer a new public space in Padua. The following project, in addition to being an urban project focused on the residence, also has the objective of relating two parts of the city that are close but at the same time distant: the historic city and the suburbs. These two elements are separated by the Venetian walls which open in some places and allow the outskirts to enter the historic city. The area being close to the wall system acts as a mediator between the two opposite parts of Padua, thus revealing itself to be an important opportunity for the city itself. To date, design research is part of a current debate on the problem of housing for students and citizens, who are very unlikely to find a home that satisfies them.

DIPTYCH OF RAVENNA The double portrait of the Dukes of Urbino is a diptych, oil on canvas (47x33 cm for canvas) with the portraits of the spouses Federico da Montefeltro and Battista Sforza, a work by Piero della Francesca dating back to around 1465-1472 and preserved in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. The project begins with a preliminary analysis carried out on the system of Ravenna squares, from which Largo Firenze emerges as an urban void, an unresolved gap in the city of Ravenna. The design idea is inspired by the diptych by Piero Della Francesca, in this picture husband and wife are represented, portrayed in different periods and only later side by side, as in marriage. Thus the music room will belong to a modern era, different from that of Carlo Aymonino’s congress center, but seeking a connection between the two urban characters. The foyer of the auditorium tries to evoke the imagination of a public square: it is defined by the walls that symbolize the facades of the houses in the Ravenna alleys, which if undertaken allow a constant view of the central place of living, that is the square. The space is characterized by the zenith light.

PROJECT CONCEPT Largo Firenze square
The square “Largo Firenze” is empty, aseptic, devoid of character, but with enormous architectural and urban potential. From the urban point of view, the space is delimited by the church of San Francesco, a small school, some public buildings and the congress center, designed by Carlo Aymonino in the twentieth century. While, architecturally speaking, the project area is rich in history: the church dates back to the 9th century. and through its apse it becomes the architectural limit of Largo Firenze; one of the streets that extends from this space towards the historic center, provides a direct connection with the Dante Alighieri theater in Ravenna. The city is already rich in history, so the project decides to complete the cultural request in the musical field, through the great music room, which will be built on the side of the square, together with an appendix that defines the square on the street front, leaving however connection possible.

The connections are the project matrix, research and study start from the connection with the congress center, from the possibility of having two buildings that can function as one. The character that the project imprints on this fragment of the city is defined as “Ravenna”, that is, it finds reference in the historic city.

A FRAGMENT OF THE CITY
The walls enclose and protect this area to preserve its integrity and prevent any contamination from the outside world.
The wall is one of the fundamental elements of architecture, the most basic form of a space divider. A single wall marks, interrupts, opposes and violently alters the site in which it is positioned.
Inside the wall, a curtain of residential buildings was built immersed in public and private areas.
The project proposes a long wall, a barrier that cuts urban traffic, an intervention designed to separate the life of a city from a forest, a symbol of nature and sustainability.
The large public area in front of the historic buildings acts as a filter for the houses. The idea of the sustainability center was to create harmony between nature and technology in an urban form.

PROJECT CONCEPT Ex barracks “Dante Alighieri”
Built volume
“Paradoxically and with enough acclaim, not a few architects are unable to resist transforming some “tissue cell” (by vocation, except for moments of rupture, invaluable opportunities for a reconstruction of anonymity) into a singular object, or pretext monument. But there can be no monument without a compact and repetitive fabric. Both are valid for the sense of proportions, the touchstone of architecture.” Alvaro Siza The historical imprint of the Dante Alighieri barracks is maintained through the two buildings placed to form an “L”, which remain as a historical trace of the presence of the military area, then destined for public use through the project. The rest of the area was populated by buildings of little historical value, built arbitrarily, according to specific war and military needs, so it was decided to demolish them to make room for the new residential buildings, which come to life inside the Wall, as of houses in line, immersed in the urban park and protected from the chaos of the city.

The urban structure of the place has been redesigned, now the parking lots are underground, allowing a free space to carry out the collective functions of Quodin’s life, and to experience the urban space.

TOWER Intership 2021 Studio: SA Architecture Team: Matteo Lorenzi Type: Private residences Location: Milano, Italy
“Architecture can be reduced to nothing but an unsolvable dialectic of necessity and freedom”. Francesco Dal Co The project intends to solve a problem that increasingly affects the first suburbs of large Italian cities, such as the city of Milan. The residual spaces that lie abandoned and unresolved, are now an opportunity to avoid the development of land consumption, proposing the technique of building on the built, as a solution to the problem. These initiatives also bring considerable advantages, often these areas are very close to the center and are large enough to allow for an increase in the city’s greenery. This project therefore revolutionizes this area throu-
gh the type of tower building, which has been cleared through customs for some time in the city of Milan, and makes it possible to build large quantities of apartments, minimizing the footprint of the building. In this specific case we are talking about thirteen floors in height, the maximum allowed in the area, of which the ground floor and the attic are for collective use for residents. This new sharing system, which arrived in recent years from the US model, allows residents to enjoy every comfort without leaving home. In this case, on the ground floor we find the hall and the gym, while the attic is an open one with deckchairs and spaces for common use. The project is completed by the inexorable presence of indigenous trees and vegetation, which complete the request for the city.

A NEW URBAN CENTRALITY “The traces on the paper remain to remind us of what has been explored and denied; attempts at errors give full meaning to the final solution “. Vittorio Gregotti The project intends to promote a reflection on the use of the spaces currently occupied by the Ex Stamoto military area and more generally on the issues relating to the design of the transformation areas on an urban and territorial scale. The Ex Stamoto is one of the many military areas, part of a huge state-owned architectural and landscape heritage, now abandoned or in the process of being de-
commissioned. Vast settlements hitherto closed and inaccessible will be able to be opened and returned to the city, to public use and to new urban roles within the contemporary city. Starting from the complexity of this area, the project therefore becomes an opportunity to address an important design theme both from an architectural point of view and from a strictly design point of view and the possibility of a comparison on the issues of redevelopment of a part of the city of Bologna. . It is a collective work carried out in a team, aimed at defining a design hypothesis that can trigger a process of defining shared urban regeneration models. The planned themes will be the school campus, the civic center, public spaces and greenery for the community.

THE DRIESCHER HOF DISTRICT IN AACHEN’S PERIPHERY About the role of the form Adolf Behne said: “Nothing is more understandable than the fact that the rationalist gives particular emphasis to form: in fact, this is born with the establishment of human relationships. The lonely individual, isolated in the middle of nature, has no problem of form. The problem of form arises together with that of the union of several individuals, indeed the form is the condition that makes coexistence possible. Form is an eminently corporate fact. Whoever accepts the laws of society also accepts those of the form“. Adolf Behne
sappearing, atomizing themselves in the indistinct metropolitan flow, we would like to demonstrate how it is possible to prefigure a general framework of transformation without proposing any clean slate or attempts to make unitary what unitary cannot be, without thinking of forcibly integrating different areas for civic or landscape character, which should remain such in the awareness that it is these diversities that account for the richness of the places.
42
The project therefore addresses the question of the architecture of the city and its construction which, although linked to more general urban problems, does not give up the search for an equally dialectical independence from them. This primarily concerns the identification of urban themes that the project articulates as parts of a more general design in which each of them In the redevelopment project of the vast urban area of plays a specific role in the aspiration to a discreet urban the Driescher Hof, in which urban forms are gradually diunit.

The drawings highlight the stratification and sedimentation process that the project envisages by superimposing the new on the existing. Also foreseeing processes of thinning and densification. The project for this area is an urban project, which in giving shape to the place through architecture wants to go beyond the contingent problems that the area presents and proposes an architecture capable of giving a shape to the city even in fragments, an architecture that is place as a cornerstone, as a fragment of civil architecture in
areas where it (the shape of the city) is being lost, within a constantly evolving design. In this “recovery” of an urban thought, “knowledge” and the ability to interpret reality, of the rebirth of the urban project, its ability to relate the needs of reality with research and beauty of sensitive forms. A thought capable of “understanding” the different aspects of reality - political, economic, technical and poetic - and channeling them into a constellation of similar images that reverberate from the territorial scale to the single part of the city.
