LORETO CONVENT
INSTITUTE OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY MANDEVILLE HALL, TOORAK
UNDER THE PATRONAGE OF HIS GRACE THE ARCHBISHOP OF MELBOURNE
RESIDENTIAL AND DAY COLLEGE FOR GIRLS
L
1
T HE Convent is beautifully situated in one of the healthiest suburbs of Melbourne, within two minutes' walk of Toorak Railway Station.
The Electric Tram passes close by the gates. Private buses run between Mandeville Hall and various suburbs, including Kew, Hawthorn and Malvern, Hampton, Brighton, Elwood, St. Kilda and Prahran. Special importance is attached to religious training.
The aim of the school is to provide a sound education on modern lines, to develop to the full the capacity of every girl, and help
her to become a useful and gracious woman in whatever position she may have to fill. Particular attention is paid to Manners and Deportment.
Speech training is an important part of the Course of Studies. Ample provision is made for recreation and sports, under the direct supervision of the nuns and trained games mistresses.
The individual attention which is paid to health and character formation is likely to ensure the best use of the educational advantages offered.
The course of studies includes the various branches of a first-class English education, with Modern Languages and Classics, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistr·y, Botany, Art, Cooking and Housewifery, Commercia] Course, Dramatic Art, Plain and Fancy Needlework, Physical Culture, Sport, Riding and Dancing.
Pupils are prepared for the Intermediate, Leaving Certificate, and Leaving Honours Examinations of the University of Melbourne. There are special facilities for Music, vocal and instrumental. Pupils are prepared for the various grades of the University of Melbourne, of the Associated Board of the Royal Academy, and of Trinity College, London. Orchestral and Choral classes are held weekly. Drawing is taught throughout the school. But Special Classes are formed for girls showing an aptitude for the subject. The more advanced pupils work at studies from natural objects in Oils or Water Colours. Outdoor sketching is encouraged.
Clubs are formed for girls specially interested in Literature, Music and French, and meetings for study or discussion are held.
Equipment has been provided, making possible frequent use of a Moving Picture Projector, and an Epidiascope for illustration of Travel Talks and Lectures.
A Kindergarten, fully equipped and under trained direction, is successfully carried on as a preparation for entrance into the Junior School.
The school year consists of three terms of thirteen weeks each, beginning the second week in February, the first week in June, and the third week in September.
References are required before the admission of a pupil, also testimonials of good conduct from the last school attended. A prize known as "The Loreto Spirit Prize"-Senior and Junior-presented by the "Loreto Old Girls' Association," is annually awarded to the girl who, by influence culd example, in work and play, has contributed most to upholding the traditions of Loreto. Prospectus may be had on application to MOTHER SUPERIOR, Loreto Convent,
Mandeville Hall, Toorak, S.E.2, Victoria.
