HE year 1956, Olympic Year, has been an important one for
all Australia, but particularly for Melbourne, and we, as
its citizens, are justly pi·oud of the organisation and arrangements that have contributed to the magnificent success of the Games. We are proud too, as Catholics, to have been among those present at the memoi·able gathering at Como Park for High Mass on 25th November.
All these Olympic celebrations in which we are participating now, are the climax to a year which has been a very full
one at Loreto. Of outstanding interest to all our friends was the erection this year of a new Novitiate at Normanhurst, New South Wales. Our Past Pupils organised a most successful Film Pi·emiere and sent over £1,000 as a donation towards the Building fund. We pray that many of our children may dedieate their lives to God in this new I.B.V.M. Novitiate.
Three of our nuns, M.M. Dorothea, M.M. Magdalen and M.M. Jerome, all of whom were well known and loved at Loreto,
Toorak, died during the year. May they rest in peace. The Senior and Middle School Retreats were held in first
term and were given by the Reverend W. Silvester, S.C.A., and the Reverend J. Tierney, S.C.A. Both Retreats were made with great fervour and Father Silvester returned at the end of November to give another day's Retreat to those leaving school.
The Reverend J. Dynon, S.J., has directed Our Lady's
Sodality this year and we are greatly indebted to him for his untiring interest in the sodalists and their activities. We also thank the Reverend H. Wilkins, S.J., for his care of the Sodality during the absence of Father Dynon. Members of the Sodality attended the Days of Recollection and Discussion which were
held at Xavier during the year and benefited by them. The Junior Sodalities of the Holy Angels, St. Joseph and the Divine Child have held regular meetings throughout the year, and have many new and zealous members. It is worth noting that the sodalists of the Holy Angels gathered up all the scraps of wool from the Craft Room and fashioned them into a colour-
ful and useful rug f6r some poor person. The Y.C.S. through the various groups, has played a prominent part in the school year. The Toorakani·ooin Groun has nobly carried on the work of its predecessors, and the Photo-
graphy Group aroused so much enthusiasm for the Inter-School Competition that we came fifth in the General Comnetition,
and third among the Girls' Schools. Some of our entries were beautiful and artistic.
The usual offering of knitted goods for the Poor was pre-
sented to Mother Superior on her feastday. Some of these were used for the relief of needy families known to the nuns, but the majority was given to the Grey Sisters who know only too well how much real poverty lives in our thoughtless midst.
Tennis, Softball and Basketball teams played through suecessful seasons. Moya McCormack brought honour to the school by winning the Under 19 Victorian Catholic Lawn Tennis C The Wayside Shrine in the Gully.
3
Association Tournament, and Helen Dwyer won the Victorian
Schoolgirls' Golf Championship for the second time. For the first time we entered a team in the Inter-School Swimming Championships and acquitted ourselves well by obtaining fourth place. The year's sporting activities culminated in one of the most successful Sports Days we have ever had. Perfect weather, excellent organisation and close competition made the day a memorable one. For the fifth time in succession St. Teresa's was the winning House. The Junior School were not so fortunate and their Sports had to be twice postponed. The Kindergarten Sports were very wisely held in First Term, when the weather problem is not so acute.
-/
The Music Examinations brought great satisfaction to all and the fifty-eight who presented for the practical examinations were all successful. Of these, 22 gained Honours, 6 being
in the 90's, 29 gained Credit, 17 being in the 80's and 7 passed. The Art of Speech candidates were similarly successful and received pleasing reports. The Senior Choir has appeared frequently during the year. All the Holy Week and Quarant' Ore Music at St. Peter's, Toorak, was beautifully sung, as also was that for Confirmation and the two ceremonies for First
Holy Communion.
Much really excellent work has come from the Art and Craft Rooms and we were proud to win fii·st and second prizes in both sections of the Inter-School Poster Competition held in conjunction with the Maytime Fair at Xavier. A new Craft introduced into the Lower Classes of the Senior School this
year is Domestic Science. It has been very enthusiastically received, and we hope to carry the course on to Leaving next year.
Several children gained Honorable Mention in the Alliance Francaise examinations and Felicity Wakefield-Kent won third place in the Matriculation Section of the Shakespeare Examination and the Joseph Winter Prize for Irish History in the recent Newman College examinations. We wonder to what
extent the Olympic Games will affect the Public Examinations which have just begun.
We cannot express adequately our appreciation of our Parents' Association, and our gratitude for the wonderful way in which it has helped us during this year. To Mrs. Guest and all those generous Mothers who have spent so many Mondays
organising and running the Luncheon Service; to Mrs. Hanley and her band of willing chauffeurs who have placed themselves at the nuns' disposal; to all Parents who by their interest in
the Conduct - Study Cards, the System of Marks and the Nuns' Reports have co-operated in the training of the children
we very sincerely say "thank you." We pray that you Parents and Children of Loreto - may all receive abundant
blessings during Christmastide and that thus fortified with His Grace you may face the New Year with courage and confidence. Cnici dum spiro Fido. 4
