-HE death of our loved Holy Fathei·, Pope Pius XII and the election and consecration of Pope John XXIII were out-
standing events in a year ali·eady memorable in the Catholic woi·ld as the Centenary of Lourdes. It is in the light that flows
with new clarity fi·oni this source of Grace and Mercy that we may review the events of the year,
Most appropriately, then, during the early weeks of fii·st tei·in one Sunday was set aside as a clay of pi·ayer in honour
of Our Lady of Lourdes. Parents and children filled the Chapel throughout the day and in the evening joined in Procession through the gi·ounds to oui· own Lourdes Grotto where a Dominican Father preached the occasional sernion. Then all returned to the Chapel foi· the closing Benediction. And as the year began at the feet of Our Lady so it concluded, Parents, Childi·en and Nuns uniting to do her honour in our outdoor play, which had for its theme the power of simple faith in an unbelieving world.
Again, the Senioi· and Middle School Reti'eats wei·e held in
first term, new Y,C. S. groups wei·e formed and we can repoi·t a steady growth in interest and membership in the Sodality of Our Lady. For much of this we thank Father Dynon, S.J.
and Father Wilkins, S.J, This year the third tel·nl general meeting of the College Branch of the Federated Sodalities of Our Lady was held at Loreto and was voted a success both spiritually and socially by the 160 sodality members who were present.
The highlight of Fii·st Term was the visit of Mother General. Her vivid pictui·es of Mission life in Loi·eto Convents did much to stimulate interest in the far fields "white for the hai·vest."
Perhaps this was the reason for the excellent work done this year by the Y.C.S. Mission group ! Working on the principle "little and often" they succeeded in capturing the sympat}ties of every girl and theii· unflagging (lay-to-day effort conti·ibuted gi·eatly to the suni necessary for our annual gifts to the Missions.
During Mission Term two lai·ge functions wei'e held a Film Evening and a Fete. To these woi·ks of Chai·ity the children added theii· annual gifts of clothing for the poor.
The opening of Second Term brought joy to the Junior School children who could now avail theniselves of the comfoi·t-
able and attractive extensions made to their building. Seniors,
however, wei·e called upon to face the departure of their gentle,
selftess Misti·ess of Schools who went to take up office as Mother Pi·ovincial of the Australian P]·ovince.
In the spoiting field there has been much activity. First term was devoted to tennis and softball, both of which were played with some success. The "A" Basketball teani, however, 4

sui·passed these efforts by an unbi·oken sei·ies of victories up to the very last match which was lost by one goal. Again, the Middle School teams wei·e notably enthusiastic players, can·ying off many victories iii Inter-School matches and giving promise for the future.
The disappointment of the Seniors regarding the cancellation of Sports Day (owing to uncertain October weather), was offset by the memory of Loreto's fii·st Swimming Carnival. So successful was the day that we hope to make it an annual event. We look forward too, to holding the Senior Sports Day in first term, 1959. Much of the yeai·'s success is due to the unfailing efforts and devoted interest of Mrs. Schaeffer and
Mi·. Guiney to whom we extend our wai·niest thanks. In the academic field it is gratifying to note that many honours were obtained in Music and Art of Speech and some candidates wei·e again awarded certificates in the Alliance Fi·ancaise contests. The numbei· of passes, in Mati·iculation and in Leaving Certificate Examinations sliows a steady increase which we hope to see continued in the forthcoming examinations. Lest the importance of material success should
assume undue pi·opoi·tions, however, it is well to pause at this
juncture and call to mind the wise counselling of Oui· Holy Mother, Mai·y Wai·d: "Satisfy thyself with nothing that is less than God." When examination results are laid on the shelf of
foi·gotten things the chai·acter that a Loreto ti·aining stamps
upon its children should still be making its impact on many
new heai·ts and homes of the futui·e. To this end do we offer
oui· daily pi·ayer "for all those who have been and are now under our care.
As always our Parish Priest. Father Ebsworth, has shown
a devoted and fatherly interest in our school activities and he has once niove offei·ed us the privilege of singing in his beautiful Pai·ish Church during Holy Week and Quai·ant 'Ore. All Loreto Parents and Old Gii·ls will be saddened by the
news that Miss Eileen Bi·enan will discontinue dancing lessons
at the end of this year. It will be difficult for us to imagine school without her. Years of generous service and unswerring
devotion to all that was in the best inte]·ests of the school have
marked her as one of its most loyal friends and faithful suppoi·-
ters, and she will ever be remembered as such. Dancing lessons in 1959 will be continued by Mrs. Linton.
This year we also said goodbye to Miss Eileen O'Keefe:
who like Miss Brenan has been with us since the beginning.
Classes in Art of Speech in 1959 will be under the direction of Mrs. Maie Hoban in the Senior School, and of Miss Clai·e O'Keefe in the Junior School.
This year we have a more than usually concrete witness
to the efforts of our Past Pupils, Parents' Association and
friends in the considerable altei·ations and additions to the Library and Junior School.
During 1958 many have generously co-operated iii conducting the weekly Luncheon Service and Chauffeur Roster as well
as conti·ibuting to the success of lai·get· functions by their loyal
support. A special ti·ibute of gratitude is paid to the many Fathei·s who quietly and unobtrusively have given their support
to the woi·ks of the Association.
As an expi·ession of gi·atitude at the close of the year we can offer nothing more fitting than the wish that you may be "bathed in the light of the incarnate word" and may show forth in youi· deeds the light that by faith shines in your hearts (2nd Mass for Christmas).
The photogi·aphs foi· the fi·ont covei· and all other pictures in this Report, except the two Library interiors, wei·e taken and donated by Pati·icia McGuinness.
