VISUAL ARTS Loreto Mandeville Hall Toorak recognises the ongoing ownership and custodianship of First Nations peoples across the land and waters of Australia and acknowledges the richness of their cultures, histories and traditions that continues to this day. We specifically recognise that traditional owners of the land on which this publication was created, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation. Loreto Mandeville Hall strives for inclusive, fair, truthful, and authentic dialogue, grounded in verity, sincerity, and justice. Our publications and any communication from the School are guided by these principles and reflect these values. We walk on the journey towards reconciliation with First Nations people, as a School committed to helping form a nation that sees its past, present and future with clear eyes and open hearts. We honour more than sixty thousand years of storytelling, art and culture.
Introducing the
Class of 2023 This year’s Loreto Toorak VCE Visual Arts Exhibition is a true celebration of the amazing creativity, ingenuity, and resourcefulness of our remarkable Class of 2023. Albert Einstein is known to have said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” By enabling our students to explore and experience the subjects of Art Creative Practice (Multi Artforms), Art Making and Exhibiting (Photography), Media and Visual Communication Design, we are challenging them to use and develop their imagination. This will no doubt be a life skill that will benefit them in whatever they choose to do in the future. Throughout this year our students have dared themselves to produce their own individual, creative and distinct works. Something that will meet their own high expectations as well as those of the VCAA Study Designs they are undertaking. They started their artistic journey at the beginning of the year with empty folios, screens, canvases, and visual journals and conclude their journey with the presentation of their work in this year’s exhibition. By reviewing their achievements, we can praise the assorted range of individual ideas, skills and techniques being explored. The variety and uniqueness of each student’s folio is to be admired.
The 2023 Visual Arts Exhibition provides fiftynine Year 12 students with the opportunity to display their artworks, designs and media presentations to a diverse audience. This allows our community to witness how different individuals respond and engage with their work. We are so fortunate at Loreto Toorak to have a passionate team of educators who have guided our students towards responding to the world in which they live in a multifarious and unique manner. It is a privilege to acknowledge the hard work of our wonderful Visual Arts Team including Sue Burke (Assistant Head of Visual Arts and Senior Teacher of Art Creative Practice), Christine Dragwidge (Senior Visual Communication Design Teacher), Sarah Merrigan (Senior Visual Communication Design Teacher), Renee Paxton (Senior Media Teacher), Jayde Caines (Years 7-10 Visual Arts Teacher) and Gin Saunders (Visual Arts Technician). As a faculty, and on behalf of our students, we would like to thank the School, in particular our Principal Angela O’Dwyer and the Leadership Team for their support of all that we do in Visual Arts. We are proud to present such an elaborate exhibition and publication of our students’ work, avenues that demonstrate the value of their achievements in this year of study.

THE ECHIDNA The Echidna is a new, contempary Art Gallery, managed by the AGA, located in the heart of the Docklands, Melbourne. Replacing the upcoming demolishment of the current, unsafe Central Pier, this Art Gallery will be found waterfront and aquire the backdrop of the Melbourne skyline. Named after its spikey shape, the Gallery will act as a tourist attraction due to the unconventional design and the scale, creating an inclusive enviroment for all people to view local art in a collaborative space. The structure is made with recycled metal sheeting, reusing materials to reduce the waste of construction.
