Mother Mary Gonzaga Barry ibvm spoke of the importance of maintaining an attitude of gratitude in our outlook and in the way

we live our lives. Here at Loreto Mandeville Hall Toorak, this has become a guiding maxim for us in our business of teaching and learning, for staff and students alike. For the conscious development of such an attitude of gratitude within the School Community goes hand in glove with our efforts to ensure a happy and optimistic educational environment for all our students.

As a School Community, there is so much for which we are grateful, and for which we give deeper thanks. Quite simply, we thank God each day for the fine young women who are our current students. Some of their activities and achievements documented in this issue of the Mandevillian give an insight into just how engaged, committed. optimistic and enthusiastic they are. We commend them all.

Our graduating students, each year, are the finest example of the quality of a Loreto Education. School and family together have worked on the formation of individuals who are imbued with the values of Justice, Sincerity, Verity, Freedom and Felicity. Last year

the academic results of our students were outstanding once again, but what remains most significant is the type of woman our graduates become, not just what profession she chooses to pursue. We congratulate and commend our graduates. 2011 is the Australia-wide year of Felicity Our Loreto Mission Statement for Australian Schools defines the virtue of Felicity as

"attitude of mind, a disposition of the heart which manifests itself in cheer[ulness, good humour, joy, happiness, hope, optimism, friendliness, courtesy, positive thinking, inner-peace, self-acceptance and courage."

We welcome a new Director of Junior School, Catherine Maimone Crowhurst. With great pleasure we welcome back to Loreto Manda/ille Hall Toorak Catherine Maimone Crowhurst. Mrs Maimone Crowhurst was a teacher at Loreto Toorak for many years before

leaving to have a family and then specialise in Mathematics teaching at the Catholic Education Office Melbourne. A graduate from Australian Catholic University, Mrs Maimone Crowhurst

is an outstanding educational practitioner, curriculum expert, and leader. In recognition of her educational leadership in the field of Mathematics, she received the Award of Highly Accompkhed Teacher of Mathematics by the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers last year.

Mrs Maimone Crowhurst brings to the position a depth and breadth of educational experience, supported by a sound knowledge and understanding of current trends in pastoral theory and practice. We warmly welcome her to the position of Director of Junior School, and a member of the Leadership Team of the School. Dr Susan Stevens

11 Vietnam Pilgrimage as members of the Senior School, our students demonstrate an understanding of, and a commitment to, the aims of our Mission Statement in relation to the core Loreto value of Justice. Each year we encourage our students to give of themselves in whatever ways they can, both at school and beyond to make a difference, big or small, in the lives of others. This is part of the education of the heart

It is an honour and a privilege to be appointed Director of Junior School at Loreto Mandeville Hall and to uphold the inspirational vision of Mary Ward and the Sisters of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary I look forward to working in partnership with parents, teachers and stadents to ensure that our girls are actively involved in school life and develop academically, personally and spiritually The year has begun with great energy and enthusiasm and it has been wonderful to speak to the girls about their ideas, challenges and goals for the future. The School Community shares the belief of providing an optimum learning environment that develops inquisitive, well informed, confident and faith-filled women of the future,

The current research about professional learning in education centres on contemporary teaching and learning practices. In essence, these practices provide opportunities for learners to think, reason and problem solve. This is done within a collaborative learning environment using a variety of tools including various technologies. Not only do learners require knowledge, but also the ability to work with others, articulating their ideas and working in a team situation to achieve a common goal. These skills are skills for the citizen of the 21 st century and education plays an integral part in preparing students for this world.

Loreto Mandeville Hall is a learning community that provides support, strategies, ideas and knowledge that will place our girls in the best frame of mind to meet the challenges of the future. To set this within context, I place my Mathematics hat on for a moment and quote George Polya who said, "It's better to solve one problem five different ways than to solve five different problems," Requiring students to articulate their thinking,

justify their solution and look for alternative methods is not only developing their understanding of the content and concepts, but also developing skills that will equip our girls for life beyond the classroom. This educational belief is underpinned by the saying, 'Give a man a fish, he eats for a day; teach him to fish and he eats for a life time.'

I look forward to working with teachers, parents and our girls, as well as those within our broader Loreto Community to provide valuable, rich learning opportunities using contemporary teaching and learning methods, so that our girls are women of the future, empowered to fish for a lifetime, and able to do much in our world.

• For the Class of 2010, we celebrate together a median ATAR score of 90.2. The ATAR is the score used for Tertiary entrance and it is also a measure of a student's

ranking within the state of Victoria. Hence, this means that 50% of our Year 12 students achieved higher than this score. This is an extraordinary statistic.

• Loreto Toorak achieved 29% of study scores over 40. (State wide, the average is 9% over 40). We achieved a median study score of 36.

• On these measures, we are the Top Performing Catholic School; we are also the third Girls' School in Victoria.

Our history - your story Work is well Jnderway in preparation for the publication, in 2014, of our history to celebrate one hundred and twenty-five years of Loreto Education in Melbourne. The history of the Loreto Sisters in Melbourne, through their early foundations, is seminal for Loreto Mandeville Hall

Toorak's distinctive history and ongoing participation as an integral member of the network of Loreto schools worldwide. Although Loreto Mandeville Hall dates its foundation from 1924, it was Mother M Gonzaga Barry (founder in 1875 of the Australian Province of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, IBVM) who sowed the first seeds of a Melbourne metropolitan secondary school, Her initiatives - in establishing a convent and small parochial school in South Melbourne in 1889, followed by a larger day school for girls in Albert Park, the Central Catholic Training College, the Loreto Free Kindergarten and, after her death, St Mary's Hall at the University of Melbourne - were the forces that shaped Loreto Mandeville Hall Toorak.

In 1924 it was the Albert Park pupils who formed the nucleus ot the new school in Toorak and many of the Melbourne nuns served in the early years of the School's formation. The community at Toorak was further strengthened by the decision of the then Provincial of the IBVM to relocate her residences and offices from the mother house in Ballarat to Toorak from 1924 to 1940,

Writing school histories involves both a backwards and forwards perspective. Our aim is to trace the origins and effective impulses of the past, and to see how these were translated into continuous growth by succeeding generations that formed the platform for Loreto Toorak's unique identity and success. A published work is a tangible way of sharing the Toorak story Its success relies on the active participation of the broader School Community in the collection of memorabilia and memories. We would love your help in this enterprise. Enclosed in this issue you will find included a questionnaire and we hope many Past Pupils will enjoy responding to this invitation. Restoration of our statues

on 2 January 1882 to Michael and Elizabeth McDonnell. Lilyb mother died when she was one, and she was then looked after by her aunt in

Ballarat. In 1906, she taught at Loreto Adelaide Terrace, Perth, before joining the IBVM with Mother Gonzaga Barry in 1904. In 1908 Lily was professed and took the name Magdalen. Mother Magdalen was Mistress

commenced in 2003. Through generous donations from many Past Pupils, and the funds acquired from the use of the Chapel for weddings, all our sacred statues have been cleaned and, where necessary,

restored. The contemporary -Shrine to Our Lady in the Glade will soon be relocated in front of the Junior School, to provide an area where our younger students can gather outdoors to pray.

Photos recently donated

Late last year, 1946 classmates Margaret (nee O'Grady) Wrigley and Margaret (nee Brewster) Golder loaned their "happy snap" photographs from the 1 940s to the Heritage Centre for copying. These candid photographs of students outside the matriculation classroom, the Children of Mary in front of the grotto, and tennis students posing on the steps of the mansion, were all copied, identified and eventually

catalogued jnto our database. These photographs add to the existing collection of photographs copied from many past pupils, but we are still on the lookout for many more candid and formal group photos, If you have any photos of your time at school in a shoe box, or under the bed

independent school to work in partnership with Orygen

Youth Health Parkville to introduce the Headsrnart Program.

Headsr-nan is a mental health prevention and early

intervention program designed to help students recognse depressive symptoms, reduce the stigma associated with depression, and promote help-seeking. Surveys commissioned by the World Health Organisation reveal that

approximately 25% of young people experience depression before the age of 18. The three hour Headsmart workshop is part of the Year 10 social-emotional curriculum and uses

a range of media and fun activities to engage students in the learning process, ncludng role play, an electronic quz and audiovisual footage. 'Up Close and Personal' - Melbourne Symphony Orchestra's Education Program

On Tuesday 29 March we welcomed well-known Australian composer, Stuart Greenbaum, and twenty musicians from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, to give a workshop on Stuart Greenbaum's recently completed chamber orchestra work: Symphony No 2 Double Planet The orchestra was conducted by Brett Kelly from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. This work and its subsequent premiere, in March 2011, came about as a collaboration between the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) in support of the 2011 VCE Music Study Design and one of its focus areas, Australian Music post 1910. Over two hundred and fifty senior students from Loreto Toorak and neighbouring schools attended this most information and valuable workshop.

During Term 1 this year, the three Year 8 Music Classes participated in Japanese Drumming Workshops at school, in the Auditorium. This workshop

taught the girls the basic skills of playing the large Japanese drums, which at-e such a vibrant and attractive aspect of Japanese culture. The presentation, given by Tosh Sakamoto, ncluded Japanese language, hands-on student participation and information about historical and cultural significance.

Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club was filled with much chatter and laughter on Wednesday 23 March when approximately 100 Loreto Ladies met to play tennis, partake in Cardio Tennis workout, or simply join in for a delicious lunch. A raffle was held during lunch with many gorgeous prizes on offer. Special thanks must go to Judy Leahy, Geraldine O'le, Siobhan Miller and Fiona Stacey who were the coordinators of this event.

The morning of Tuesday 8 March saw the Auditorium fill with 200 women

- Sisters of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, special guests, staff, mothers, grandmothers, and daughters as we gathered together to

celebrate the centenary of International Women's Day.

We were fortunate to hear from our two School Captains - Annabel Jones and Emma Quirk who presented on what this important day means to

them. They referred to Mary Ward's famous quote that "women in time to come will do much" and implored us, as Loreto women, to ensure that

this dream continues to be fulfilled as we acknowledge our responsibility to ensure that injustice towards women does not go unnoticed in our own society, in our School and even in our families.

Our guest speaker at the Breakfast was Ms Susan Pascoe AM, who shared with us stories of women affected by the Black Saturday Bushfires of February 2009 in which 173 people died. Ms Pascoe was one of three

Commissioners on the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission established after these devastating bushfires, and was able to present to us a first4

hand account of the role women played in their affected communities both during the emergency and in the days and weeks that followed. We are most grateful for the financial support of the following organisations:

On the 13 October 2010, the Class of 2009 gathered together for our first Reunion since graduating trot-n Loreta It had been a much anticipated occasion, and I, like many others, was very excited as I

walked up the driveway through those familiar gates that ] had passed each morning during my days at Loreto, almost expecting Ms O'Connor to pul me over for wearing dangling earrings and other blings! As we entered the glowing Oak Parlour, we were warmly greeted by

Dr Stevens, Mrs Burns and Ms McCarty. It was wonderful to see some of our teachers again, and we all spoke with nostalgia of those who

were absent. Although it had been nearly a year since many of us had met each other, as soon as we congregated in that familiar room, we

were instantly drawn together and chattered away just as we always did

One rather amusing story came from some of us who wears our silver graduation rings religiously, as this often draws quite a bit of attention from fellow uni students - one even remarked that Loreto must be some

sort of cult blowing! We shared many other diverse stories of our first year out - from university, at work, volunteering, or any manner of gapyear activities. It was clear that each of us had embarkee on our next phase of that journey towards fulfilling our unique and individual goals, hopes and dreams, and would be testimony that "women in time to come will do much"

HONG KONG REUNION - 24 September 2010 at Watermark Restaurant, Hong Kong Under a rather cloudy sky on a balmy September

evening, on the edge of Hong Kong's famous Victoria Harbour, 15 Loreto ladies gathered to talk, laugh, talk, reminisce, talk, eat, talk, drink, talk, share, then talk. If the noise level: smiles

and laughter were anything to go by - and the fact that we were (as in the past) the last group to leave the restaurant around midnight - then tt¢41* %

Dr Susan Stevens (Principal and Chair of Loreto Schools of Australia) once again enthusiastically hosted the Hong Kong Reunion and during the evening, gave everyone around the table a comprehensive update on Loreto Australia's activities and events, news from various

happenings and of future plans. Despite having been in many different years at School, for varying lengths of time and at three different Loreto Schools around Australia, all of

the Alumnae managed to find so much to talk and laugh about, remember and share, Over the delicious food and Australian wines, everyone had a fabulous evening sharing their memories of Mandeville Hall Kirribilli and Marryatville and making many new connections with each other as well. 6

Onippels Sri Lanka Visit

Last July 2010, Michelle O'Connor (1987) and her daughter Sarah (2006) travelled through Sri Lanka (mother and grandmotherb homeland) They travelled by local bus and train from the coast to the hill country, experiencing the beauty of the land and culture.

A highlight of the journey was visiting St Gabriel's Orphanage high up in the mountains of Hatton. There was a strong sense of respect, pus care for the some 30 children by The Franciscan Sisters. A place to feel safe and be loved.
