the art of living with joy january 14 - february 27 padnos gallery Holland artists Carolyn Stich and Alla Dickson invite you to shake the winter blues by joining them at their exhibit, “The Art of Living with Joy,” presented by the Holland Area Art’s Council. Vibrant colors and jovial subjects are evidence that Alla and Carolyn use art to express their happiness throughout the year. During the winter months, Carolyn Stich Studio and Alla Dickson Studio preserve the warmth and welcome of summer by creating art that reflects what they love. With these common goals in mind, they join together to share their joy with West Michigan. Using her extensive background in education and psychology, Alla brings her happiness to life with bold brush strokes and oil paints on canvas. Vibrant flowers and beautiful landscapes capturing glimpses of Alla’s joy will be on display in the gallery. Carolyn’s whimsical paintings, done in black ink and gouache, depict the everyday scenes from which she finds happiness. She will exhibit paintings of puppies and trains and everything in between in her usual lighthearted style.

urban punk: digital paintings by john leben january 14 - february 27 armstrong gallery In his Urban Punk series, John Leben uses surrealistic imagery, fantasy and humor to show a world of inept leadership and absurd solutions to environmental problems. Each digital painting tells the story of the constant effort to make things better and the naïve certainty that technology will solve the problems. The series’ environmental theme touches on over-population, renewable resources and mankind’s destruction of species and their natural habitats. The exhibit focuses on serious topics but uses humor to present optimistic – however far-fetched – solutions to complex environmental problems.

These initiatives give artists an opportunity to display their talents and creativity while drawing the public into a lively and robust conversation about the arts. From “Pigs on Parade,” “Towering Tulips,” and “South Shore Village Murals,” to the “ReMastered,” “See the Z” and “ReCycled” avenue banners, public art projects delight and engage our community.
