A year at the Tree House on River Hills Drive January When you live at the Tree House, you must have a pair of binoculars – there is so much nature to see. If there is a good, solid winter freeze on the lake, a pair of bald eagles will visit. (This year they dined on fish high in the tree above our deck)

February Hot Tub – start the planning for the gardens Cross country skiing to downtown Holland for a hot chocolate

March Rake away the last of autumn’s leaves and see the green start to emerge. Our little hill protects many of the hardier plants, so you may be lucky and have primroses blooming at the front door. The little family of squirrels will peek their heads out and the babies will begin to frolic around the Big Oak in the back yard. Swans, ducks, geese

April Alpine anemones and snowdrops dot the landscape. Forsythia and azaleas begin to bloom. The gold finches at the feeder are starting to match the daffodils on the hillside. You can have your first official meal out on the sunny deck. Take a walk into the woods and see the green buds start to appear. Put the screen doors up! Evening walks to Dunton Park or Window on the Waterfront and downtown

May Our stately Dogwood is in full bloom as are her little sisters on the hill. Several wrens warble their hearts out – singing the praises of the little houses we have provided on the hill. Lilacs, forget-me-nots and lilies of the valley fill the air with fragrance. Slip your kayak into the water and get to know the river. Watch the Tulip Time fireworks from the comfort of the living room or the yard across the street. Leave the car at home and walk or ride your bikes to Downtown Holland. What parking problem?

June Practice Grilling before you invite your friends over pretty soon they’ll start asking if they can come to your cool tree house for dinner.

July Now the landscape is revealed in its full glory! The ferns are lush and full and the hostas spread their leaves on the terraces . Fireflies, wild blackberries. fireworks

August 15 degrees cooler than in town, with gentle breezes from the lake. Chances are you won’t need the air conditioner.

September Leaves start to turn and you can ride or walk to the farmer’s mmarket and take advantage of the harvest.

October The hill is in it’s full autumn glory. Nannyberry, dogwood, red twig dogwood, oaks and sasafrass fill the woods and color the views

November What better way to celebrate fall than to have wild turkey stroll through the yard?

December Snowfall viewed from the living room - Vince Geraldi on the stereo and candlelight make December lovely. The hillside makes a great sledding hill too!
