letter from the director: rediscover your creative child Back when you were a child – wasn’t it great to be given a few pieces of colored construction paper? Within a moment a universe of possibilities leapt to mind. A few snips with the scissors, a couple of blots of paste and presto, you had created a fabulous, never-before seen creature like the delightful little fellow on our cover! Creativity came as naturally as breathing. Our lives get busier with every passing year. Schedules intrude, obligations elbow their way in and pretty soon there is no more room for play. The dancer/choreographer, Twyla Tharp, said, “Creativity is not just for artists. It’s for businesspeople looking for a new way to close a sale; it’s for engineers trying to solve a problem; it’s for parents who want their children to see the world in more than one way.” I am constantly amazed by the people that I encounter each day at the Holland Area Arts Council. Children and bankers, business executives and retirees happily messing with paint, clay, music, movement, instruments, pencils, hammers, nails – all having a fabulous time. Some are students, some are volunteers and others are instructors or musicians. The boisterous clamor of music, laughter, color and artistic expression fills the Arts Council and spills out onto the streets of our community. So let that creative child out to play once again. The Holland Area Arts Council is here to provide our community with a smorgasbord of creative opportunities. Take time to nourish your creativity and it will nourish you in return. Sincerely,

Lorma Freestone
