THE ARTS FOR YOU PUBLIC ART Part of the Holland Area Arts Council’s role in the community is to oversee public art projects. These initiatives give artists an opportunity to display their talents and creativity while drawing the public into a lively and robust conversation about the arts. From “Pigs on Parade,” “Towering Tulips,” “South Shore Village Murals,” to the “ReMastered,” “See the Z” and “ReCycled” avenue banners, public art projects delight and engage our community. See the ReCycle Banner by Ellen Tanis Awad

ART FOR ALL

4all

Art for All, a unique art program for mentally and physically impaired adults, began in 1985 as an opportunity for individuals in the community to experience the arts. Original underwriting was by the Life Consultation Center and the class was taught at Hope College’s DePree Center for the Arts. In 1997 the program was absorbed by the Arts Council. Mae Van Ark, a local artist and instructor, led the program and taught the Art for All classes until her retirement in 2009. Today the Art for All program is a year-round class taught once a week for an hour and a half. The supervising instructor, Sandie Coffman exposes students to various media including printmaking, weaving, clay sculpture, painting, wood construction, dance and movement. In "Art for All," we build relationships to create a fun-filled, sensorypacked program that enriches our students' abilities to create works of art. We encourage and appreciate the many people from Hope College and the community who come to assist in the classes and projects. Because of them, value is instilled in our students' lives. Our volunteers find much gratification using their time, talents and energy to witness the joy expressed in the students' accomplishments each week. Art for All uses themes to bring enjoyment and focus into each arts experience. We provide a variety of artistic materials, which allows us to change the medium each week. We also use creative movement and dance to get the creative juices flowing, enjoying each other's company in the process. Kellee, our movement instructor, leads us as a group and/or one-on-one with creative movement and dance, using music and accessories as needed. She works on specific goals with various students according to their needs and desires. Art for All meets every Monday at 5:30 pm. Contact Mary Sundstrom for more information at mary@hollandarts.org.
