SAG represents 160,000 performers who appear in Hollywood film and television productions, including actors, musicians, puppeteers, stunt performers, voiceover artists, and dancers. They’re saying the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers – an organization representing the largest producers in Hollywood – has refused to be reasonable as working conditions for actors have deteriorated.

The SAG’s demands are similar to the WGA’s demands –increased pay, better working conditions, and restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence to replace workers.

In particular, SAG is looking for substantially increased minimum rates for the lowest-paid workers in the union, other minimum rates to keep up with inflation, increased streaming residual payments, and increased limits to contributions to health and pension funds by producers.

SAG actors have said that the pay scales negotiated before streaming services fundamentally altered the industry are no longer sustainable. Streamers like Netflix are currently able to pay substantially less to union writers and actors in both fees and residuals.

Actors also want regulations on self-tape auditions, which have become the industry standard since the beginning of the COVID pandemic. They’re looking for minimum turnaround times and limits to the number of pages that need to be prepared.

Both the writers and actors unions want hard limits on the use of AI to replace workers. SAG is particularly concerned that studios may not use an actor’s likeness or performance in AI-generated content without the actor’s consent and compensation for each use.

SAG President Fran Drescher – yes, the star of !"#$%&'( ') – who had been criticized early in the contract negotiations for appearing out of touch with the majority of working-class actors, delivered a blistering speech Thursday, in which she laid the blame for the strike squarely at the AMPTP.

“We had no choice. We are the victims here,” Drescher said. “I cannot believe it, how far apart we are on so many things. How they plead poverty when they are giving hundreds of millions of dollars to their CEOs. The jig is up, AMPTP. We stand tall. You have to wake up and smell the coffee.”

Disney CEO Bob Iger drew headlines over the weekend for telling CNBC that the unions’ demands are “just not re:87427/.” The studios also drew strong rebukes after an unnamed executive was quoted in *#&+,-'# saying that their strategy was to allow the strike “to drag on until union members start losing their apartments and losing their ,364-4.”

Financial analysis company Moody’s released a report Monday that said the annual cost of the WGA and SAG demands, coupled with additional concessions won by the

Directors Guild of America in its recent negotiations /3689) cost the studios between $450-600 million annually.

To put that number in perspective, Warner Bros-Discovery CEO David Zaslav was compensated $498 million for the five-year period from 2018-22, according to a report from !"#$./0$1'2#,#0$!-3#0. 4&5-#6)),:4)0-<302-9)2,:2) the networks spent approximately $54 billion on creating streaming and linear television content excluding sports in 2022, and that number doesn’t include spending on feature films. That means the workers’ demands would represent less than a 1 percent increase in spending.

Drescher said she appreciated that the strike is going to be hard on people who are out of work, but cautioned that if SAG didn’t fight now, employers were only going to demand more and more concessions.

“Our heart bleeds that we had to make this decision, but we can’t not get what these members deserve because it’s only going to get worse. This is where we drew the line in the sand,” she said.

“We are striking because we haven’t been able to make a sustainable living for many moons. I made more money in my teens and 20s than I do as a senior,” Marciona says. “The producers used to be making millions of dollars and we’d be making thousands, but now they’re making billions and our wages aren’t even keeping up with the cost of living.”

Studios have offered some wage increases for performers in high-budget streaming that appear to be huge – like bumps of 76% for foreign residuals, or 58% for guest stars. But Marciona says these bumps are miniscule given how little actors receive from streaming now.

“Wages need to go up immensely. We’re just being gaslit,” he says.

Guarino is also known for playing Quincy on the queer Netflix series A&06B-+#50, a role for which he was nominated for a Daytime Emmy.

“I get no Netflix residuals, so ironically the thing I have my Emmy nomination for I get no residuals,” Guarino says.  Genderqueer actor Nicky Endres, who has appeared on shows such as Netflix’ E'#$*&)$&6$&$!-3# and CBS’ %>FBG$./0$ 1'2#,#0, says these concerns are compounded by a lack of job security.

“Being a gig worker is hard enough, but all we sacrifice to be an actor, and what, we get covid and lose a job? AI being programmed to steal our voices and faces? It’s all too much,” they say.

The vast majority of SAG members are not wealthy or particularly well-known. They are background performers and featured or guest performers who used to be able to count on a decent working-class income from regular performance work but have noticed a marked decline in pay since the industry’s move to streaming.

Actors have pointed out that 87% of its membership does not earn the $26,000 minimum that would qualify them for the union’s health insurance plan. And, that $26,000 minimum represents income before agent and manager fees and taxes.

SACRAMENTO — The California Senate passed a proposed state constitutional amendment to secure marriage equality 31-0 with bipartisan support on Thursday.

Assembly Constitutional Amendment 5 (ACA 5), authored by Assemblymember Evan Low (D-Silicon Valley) and Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), would amend the California Constitution to protect the fundamental freedom to marry and remove the unconstitutional and discrimi1,-56<$3,19@,9+$465A$F6585/0-051$HC$G5019$/5$?5@3*$.+38$ safeguard against any future attempts to restrict marriage rights for same-sex or interracial couples.

The video emphasizes that drivers are going too fast if they do not allow enough time to stop or react to road conditions. ing. New social media messages provide context and depth to the benefits of slowing down, where just a marginal decrease in average speeds, and speeds where a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle, significantly lowers the chances of serious injury or death.

In 2021, the latest federal statistics available, 1,509 people were killed in speeding-involved crashes throughout the state. Nationally, there was an 8% increase in speeding-involved crashes from 2020 to 2021, with 12,330 people killed in speed-related crashes.

Temecula Valley Unified School District’s current curriculum is outdated and in violation of state law. Students in the district are forced to use a textbook published in 2006. In the process of acquiring updated textbooks for students in grades one through five on May 16, 2023, school board President Joseph Komrosky asserted false claims about the instructional materials. The board voted by a 3-2 majority to reject the adoption of the new social studies curriculum that was recommended by teachers representing every elementary school in the district and overwhelmingly supported by parents and community members. The textbook, one of four standard programs approved by the state, is routinely and widely used across hundreds of school districts in California.

Elementary students in Temecula are slated to begin the school year on August 14, 2023, without enough textbooks for every student because of the school board’s decision to reject a widely used social studies curriculum.

The ofcial answer is that I, along with other clergy plaintifs, are challenging the unconsti tutional use of our taxes to fund the unlawful detention of individuals who are unable to pay 1/-;>

We joined with six people who were in jail because they could not pay money bail. The point of our lawsuit is to stop the practice of keeping people in jail before they have been found guilty of any crime just because they cannot pay the amount of money that is set by LA’s uniform bail schedules.

The real reason that I am part of this lawsuit is justice.

My day job is training rabbis. I teach ancient and modern Jewish law at the Ziegler School for Rabbinic Studies. My students, some of whom were ordained this month, will teach and preach at Conservative Jewish congregations and university campuses around the country. 178-98:;-<8=:8>-?8:;@A>-B@;C-?8:;-<=DA;@A>:-DEF-@E-?8:;-BDG:-H ;C>-<=DA;@A>:-ADEE7;-I>-;D@E;>F-IG-@E?8:;@A>

One of the main teachings that I hope they carry with them is the centrality of justice. In Deuteronomy 16 we read: “Judges and overseers you shall set for yourself within all your gates.” This is followed by: “they shall judge the people with just judgment. You shall not skew judgment,” and “justice, justice you shall pursue.” Justice and only justice must be pursued. That is, you must pursue justice with just practices and in just ways — the prac tices cannot be tainted by injustice.

Our criminal legal system is tainted. It is broken. It is unjust. All of the people we are talking about are considered innocent; and in truth many of them are. One in three Cali :803-/$/006.5.$36?60$;6/9$58$/$@83?-@5-83>$From 2011 to 2015, over a quarter-million Califor nians were jailed on accusations that ultimately did not even justify the fling of a criminal @+/046>

If, however, the person arrested is unfortunate enough to be poor, they will stay in jail. While bail is supposed to ensure that people will show up for a trial, in truth it is just anoth er poverty tax which does not improve public safety and makes life worse for the individu als and families that are already struggling.

Thirty percent of people who are employed and are jailed pretrial lose their jobs. Twenty

three percent of people who are jailed pretri al lose their housing. One of the plaintifs in the current lawsuit could not get to a job in terview. Another could not get her medicine.  It should not be the case that if two people are arrested, one will be freed because they have more money. This is not justice. And when people are kept in jail they are kept in in humane conditions which have been called “/$ living hell,” in an ACLU fling. There is garbage, urine, and feces on the foors where, because of severe overcrowding, people are forced to sleep. Again, none of these people have been convicted of anything.

In our lawsuit, Urquidi v. Los Angeles<$83$ Tuesday, May 16 the judge issued a prelimi 3/0,$-3A23@5-83 eliminating the unjust burden of cash bail in low-level cases. In his 02;-34<$5+6$ judge explained that money bail makes every one less safe: study after study proves that it neither promotes court appearance, nor pre ?635.$06)/006.5.>

In fact, the research shows the exact opposite: money bail is so destructive to the lives of those who are jailed for their poverty that it makes them more likely to commit crimes in the future. Plus, there are far less disruptive ways to assure that people will show up to their court dates. Something as simple as texts and mailers sent to people who were arrested reminding them of their appearance dates. In New York City, text reminders re duced missed court appearances by 26 percent.

In the lawsuit we demand that the County and City and their law enforcement agen cies end these widespread constitutional violations. The County and City do not deny that these practices constitute violations of the Constitution, yet they have not stopped them.

We look out over Los Angeles, and, all things considered, see a similar landscape. The beauty and glitter of our city hides an ugly reality that many of us do not want to see.

We, however, echo Isaiah’s prophetic cry that this city will only be redeemed by justice and righteousness. We must end the cash bail system now.
