LMC wires students into
lucrative careers
Angel Cortes, 19, heard about Los Medanos College from a high school counselor, when he expressed an interest in working as an electrician. He discovered the Electrical and Instrumentation Technology (ETEC) course and immediately signed up.
“With the skills we’re learning here, you can do just about anything, especially with the instrumentation part of the course,” Cortes said.
“You can work at brewery, a water treatment plant, anywhere that requires calibration of instrumentation equipment and valves and conduits, programmable software and transmitters.”
Jose Quesada can relate to Cortes’s enthusiasm for the work. As an LMC ETEC professor, he brings to the classroom his own 27 years of experience in the field and fond memories of having gone through the same program when he was starting out. Students in his Friday class practiced wiring outlets and running conduits through a structure.
The skills are in high demand across local industries, from refineries, chemical plants, water and waste treatment plants to manufacturing and power generation. LMC offers students a path to certification as electrical and instrumentation technicians and toward earning an associate of science degree in ETEC.
“It’s a big field with a lot of demand, and in some these jobs, the starting salaries can be from $55 to $75 an hour,” he said. “This is a great course that I would recommend to just about anybody.”
Electrical Technician
The Electrical Technical specialization trains students to maintain complex electrical automation systems used in the manufacturing and power generation industry.
Instrumentation Technician
The Instrumentation Technician specializations trains students to maintain the process measurement and control systems used in refineries, chemical plants, biotech plants, pharmaceutical plants, water and wastewater treatment plants.
Certificate of Achievement
Four semesters. Courses in the first three semesters are common to Electrical and Instrumentation Technicians. The fourth semester varies. Electrical Technicians concentrating on the skills needed for electrical maintenance. Instrumentation Technicians concentrate on the measurement and control of processes.
Associate of Science Degree
An Associate of Science Degree in ETEC may be obtained by completing General Education English and math requirements and the required courses for the major in ETEC. Physics 15 satisfies the Physical Science requirement for the AS degree.
The course was perfect for Jezica Perez, 32, who graduates this spring with her ETEC certification. Perez, who works in the parts department for Bay Area Rapid Transit, sees certification as her path to advancement and a bump in pay of at least $10 an hour.
“It’s taken me about one and half years to complete the certificate, which means that once I pass the test, I can apply for my promotion,” she said. “I’ll be working on the trains with other electricians and mechanics rather than just grabbing the parts for them.”
Employers seek LMC students for HIGH-DEMAND JOBS
Each year dozens of top local and regional employers descend onto LMC’s Pittsburg campus for the Spring Internship and Job Fair, enticing students to join their company and take on high-demand, well-paying jobs.
“Los Medanos College has excellent contacts and industry partners who look to us each year, seeking the most well-prepared prospective employees,” said Bill Bankhead, LMC manager of Workforce and Economic Development. “Students who come to our job fairs have an edge over the competition. They make direct contact with employers who want to hire them, knowing our students have mastered the skills needed for the job. This past April we had about 50 employers participate in our career fair, and more than 250 students attended.”
East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) is among the major employers who participates in LMC’s Career Fair annually. The regional drinking water purveyor and wastewater utility has more than 400 job classifications from administrative and professional to technical and trades that could be the perfect fit for LMC graduates.
“LMC helps prepare its students and graduates to compete for a variety of EBMUD careers,” EBMUD spokesperson Andrea Pook said. “For example, graduates from LMC's industrial technology and welding technology programs – which are not offered by all postsecondary institutions – have developed skills to compete for EBMUD's Machining & Maintenance Worker II and Welder positions.”
The Internship and Career Fair and fall semester Opportunity Fair are part of LMC's comprehensive job readiness and employer engagement initiatives, which have contributed to successful careers. About 69% of LMC alumni from Career and Technical Education programs report they are employed in their field of study. About 82% of those report their wages increased by at least $11 per hour over their precollege earnings.
“Our CTE programs are fueling local industry with skilled employees, while helping students and graduates advance into jobs that lift their family’s prospects and quality of life,” Bankhead said.

Military-connected community FINDS ANSWERS AND SUPPORT AT VRC
“IBy Melissa Jackson, LMC Veteran Services Program Coordinator
When it comes to exploring a future during and after military service, LMC’s Veterans Resources Center (VRC) is the place to start. The center helps military-connected students access the programs and benefits they need to achieve their degree or technical and career training goals.
More than 650 military-connected students applied to LMC this academic year. Annually, VRC staff serve about half that number, which include veterans, veterans’ dependents, reservists, National Guard members, and active-duty service members or their dependents, which represent the fastest growing group using Veterans’ Services.
As coordinator of the VRC, I can say our most successful students ask questions and reach out to peers,
family, and our staff. Martin Pizano, an Army veteran who served as an infantryman, is the second in his family to attend LMC and use our services.
Pizano, who went to Airborne Ranger School, is now a fire technology major who aims to be a firefighter and smoke jumper. He credits his brother for guiding him to the VRC because, “If you have questions, they always answer.”
Nursing major and veteran Navy hospital corpsman and certified surgical technician, Yajayra Romero, said she learned about LMC’s Veterans Services from a classmate and received technical assistance with her G.I. Bill and academic counseling from counselors who know VA requirements.
“I heard a lot of good things about LMC’s Nursing Program – that it was supportive with strong instructors, and was merit-based,” Romero said, adding that she was accepted to the University of California San Francisco but chose LMC for its veteran support services and academic counseling.
LMC’s Veterans Services helps with priority registration for veterans, state and federal education benefits, parking permits, and more.
Salomae Trujillo de Torres, a dependent spouse of a disabled Army veteran, said she always wanted to go to college and came to LMC thanks to the state CalVet Dependents Fee
heard a lot of good things about LMC’s Nursing Program – that it was supportive with strong instructors, and was merit-based.” – Yajayra Romero
Waiver and federal Dependents Education Assistance.
“I came to LMC because it was small and close to home, and my granddaughter recommended it,” Trujillo de Torres said. “The supports that helped me the most have been the computer and technical assistance and counseling. The patient and encouraging staff answered questions I didn’t know I had, and I got all my supplies.”
Jeff Jones, a veteran Navy electrician and firefighter, is using federal Veteran Readiness & Employment education benefits for a degree in engineering. LMC offers more than 90 programs of study, including: nursing, basic law enforcement, business, computer science, engineering, fire technology, administration of justice, liberal arts, automotive technology, biology, psychology, welding technology, electrical/instrumentation technology, and process technology.

LMC brings to reality for aspiring
Recruits ignite their careers with hands-on training
Riley Egan had prepared for weeks for what his Fire Academy instructors called the “live burn” at the Contra Costa County Fire Training Center. He checked his gear and stood at the ready. Once the instructor ignited the gasoline prop pan, Egan swiftly moved in and attacked the blaze, dousing it with a burst from his fire extinguisher.
Egan is one of about 30 recruits training this spring in Los Medanos College Fire Academy, the handson course where students put into practice the principles they learned in the pre-requisite classes –Fire 101 and 102, and the Fire 106 physical agility test.
Egan, who had been working in retail since 2017, at age 29 had a revelation.
“I had a sit-down with a co-worker and suddenly thought, ‘why am I limiting myself?’” he said. “I grew up in the Boy Scouts and always thought being a firefighter was a great job. So, I looked around, and found LMC was the closest place I could train. I took the Fire 101 class and was immediately hooked. It’s not just the training, but now I got to know these guys. There’s a real camaraderie. Any one of them would follow me into a burning building and I’d trust them with my life.”
LMC Fire Academy coordinator Dominic Reyes said students who train at LMC have numerous advantages for landing a job when they graduate. Much of their training takes place at the Contra Costa County training center in Concord, which includes a five-story drill tower, five fire engines, a wildland engine, and ample space for live fire training. It is the same center professional firefighters across the county use to train.
Lon Goetsch, assistant fire chief with the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, said the partnership with LMC serves the community well, providing a well-trained pool of recruits at a time many local fire departments are seeking to fill vacant positions.
“The biggest advantage, though, is learning from our experienced cadre (instructional staff),” said Reyes, who graduated the LMC academy in 2010. “They all work in professional fire departments – from Berkeley Fire, San Francisco Fire, Alameda Fire, and Contra Costa County. The students we graduate do make it to that end goal. Then we see it go full circle and they come back to teach.”
Dave Haynes, Jr., is among the working firefighterinstructors. Haynes, an LMC alumnus ’17, credits the program for preparing him to succeed in his job with Contra Costa County Fire. He graduated from El Cerrito High School, attended Diablo Valley College initially exploring the field of criminal justice, turned to Contra Costa College for EMT training and continued his exploration at LMC, where it all came together.
“Having the foundational skills and knowledge from the LMC college academy prior to stepping into the paid fire department helped me more than anything,” Haynes said. “I was already familiar with their way of doing things, with the equipment they use – I was ready.”
“Since COVID, the number of qualified, available recruits has been going down,” Goetsch said. “There’s incredible demand for firefighters, EMTs and paramedics. These are exciting jobs with wages and benefits that are very attractive.”
