Lost News This month, my esteemed colleague Richard Cornish is taking a break to look after his mum so I decided to shake things up a bit. I have wanted to do a story on our photographer Danny Wootton for so long now but he is incredibly shy. So with a promise that we will do less talking and more looking at photos, he agreed to sit down with me for a chat. See what happened on Page 8.

We have also added a new regular column called Lost Property. Let's face it, most of us are obsessed with property, houses, interior styling and of course, gorgeous photography so we couldn't help but create a regular column that gives us the licence to poke around kickass houses every month. Why wouldn't you?

I found it nigh impossible to only pick 5 reasons to visit the region this month so here are some that are equally as fabulous: On Friday 19 April, we are heading to Animus Distillery for another Gin & Sonic Party. This time its being held at their Kyneton distillery in Piper Street. A free event, you get to try out delicious cocktails, G&T's (of course) and

And early next month on Sunday 5 May, the Palais in Hepburn Springs will be hosting a Gala Fundraiser Concert for the Hepburn Wildlife Shelter. This is an incredible volunteer run shelter that run on the smell of an oily rag looking after injured and orphaned wildlife across the area. Starting at 1pm some of the regions finest musicians will entertain you all afternoon whilst Archer will host a kids corner for the youngsters. $10 on door. palais-hepburn.com So until next time, have a safe and happy Easter. A quiet focus.

Danny Wootton is a quiet man. Softly spoken with a calming energy about him. You get the distinct impression that he sees the world differently. And not just because he spends most of his time looking at it through a lens.

“I have always enjoyed taking photos,” he says, reminiscing with a shy smile, “I was given a camera when I turned ten, and from that day on I was hooked. But I want my work to provoke a reaction or an emotion. My work can be a little on the darker side.”

Danny studied multimedia design with a number of years doing a variety of creative outputs including old-school sign painting.

Several beautiful storefronts in the region including Annie Smithers’ du Fermier in Trentham, boast Danny’s intricate gold leaf signwriting.

“But photography is my passion. It’s the mystery of it that I love. Why give away the entire image? You must leave room for imagination, room for the viewer to have their own experience with it.” he explains. This is evident in all of Danny’s work. Whether it is a commercial or editorial project, or even a personal shot taken during a recent grass fire in Porcupine Ridge, Danny captures the essence of the subject but allows room for the viewer to develop their own narrative about the image.

And maybe that is why Danny is so quiet himself. His photography speaks far more eloquently about the kind of person and artist that he is, than words ever possibly could.

ack in 2007 the millennial drought was well under way. The country was dry and farming communities were hurting. Clunes, the historic town 40km west of Daylesford, was suffering.

Shops were closing and there was an uneasy sense of decline in the community. A group of locals put their minds together and decided to gather some book traders and turn Clunes into a mini book fair for a day. They expected a few hundred people. Six thousand showed up. Not only that but out of a population of 900 people 100 volunteered to help. They called it Booktown and next month sees the 12th annual Booktown at which 18,000 are expected to attend.

Clunes Booktown Festival, held on the first weekend in May, will draw thousands to this historical towns beautiful streetscape with shopfronts highlighting the town’s love of books.

Clunes is Australia’s only booktown – a town dedicated to books and writers – and you can see this throughout the year as the community is the home to many writers and artists who find inspiration in the historical village. Local

Ballarat poet, Nathan Curnow, will be one of the many authors presenting at this year’s event. His latest publication, The Apocalypse Awards, is a collection of his writings, pinpointing his eye for detail and ear for exquisite music. Nathan will be joined by some of Australia’s most prolific and fascinating authors at this year’s Booktown Festival including Jane Caro, Sarah Epstein, Christian White, Georgina Reid, Alice Pung, Jock Serong and Clunes local resident writer JP Pomare.

Curated discussions including “Do the best crime stories take place in fictional worlds?” draw upon the popularity of true crime stories and the enormous surge of podcasts in this genre. Australians simply can’t get enough.

Leading authors and experts will join to discuss this and other hot topics trending on social media including our current political climate, slowing down at home and modern-day feminism.

The Clunes Booktown Festival takes place on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 May. Tickets are $10.

Liam, the Boy Scout

Delay for a moment, as we did, and I’ll take you to a country town, place you at the entrance of an old Scout Hall on a Saturday afternoon, where ladies have set up tables and laid out their stalls with their kids, selling knitwear, soap and not much else to the few who wander in.

It’s a small market and you’re seen now. Their faces say: few, so few.

You’d rather back out and continue on, but enter, don’t be rude.

Delay, as we did, go all the way in, which isn’t too far at all, pretending there’s something you might buy beneath a portrait of Baden-Powell.

At the end is a boy in full uniform, sitting at his own card table with nothing but bars of chocolate on top and a note of introduction.

Liam’s been sitting alone all day so he can get to the Jamboree.

He laminated the note that says so - Liam’s not good at explaining.

He just wants to go, and he’ll sit at that table staring at the ceiling selling few, so few, with only this plan, one that isn’t really working.

In years to come I wish for him, not failure or disappointment, but a goal like this when the badges are gone and the institution he loves has crumbled. A Jamboree goal, whatever his age, the hope of preparation, something worth erecting a table for and the words in laminate. Because the fire will only get harder to light, the tools won’t work as they should, and the battle of trusting somebody to come will seem pointless to stage and reset. But now you’ve delayed, as we did, now you’ve gone all the way in, I wish this for you too in the hall of yourself with no better plan than his, for people to spend whatever they have on someone alone with a reason to endeavor, although it may not pay and though the light grows dim.

aylesford’s Farmers Arms Hotel is the type of character-filled, friendly pub that every country town wishes it had - and which dozens of metro pubs have tried try to emulate. The beautiful red brick building, complete with red geraniums in window boxes, gilt signwriting on windows and clipped hedge houses the quintessential character filled bar. Memorabilia adorns the bar whilst posters and photos are pinned to the large community board on the wall and whisper tales of the thousands of connections that have been made here for over the past 150 years.

Written out on the dining room blackboard are a few well-known pub favourites but the menu goes well beyond standard country pub fare. There’s Italian style braised lamb shanks served with mash sit happily alongside a Korean bibimbap. Served in deep glazed hot bowl, it is filled with steaming vegetables and slices of tender beef sitting on a bed of rice, its edge cooked until crusty. Finished with an egg yolk with a serve of kim chi and sriracha

LO S T EAT sauce on the side, this dish is more akin to a Melbourne laneway café food. That said it sits well with a menu filled with local ingredients and a real sense of generosity.

Head chef Chris Timmins grins as he approaches, “I’ve just come back from the vineyard”, he laughs. The pub’s owner, Mitch Duncan, has planted vines at his nearby vineyard. From these is made one of their house reds, Farmer’s Arms “Moonchaser” Shiraz Refosco. “We had a photoshoot there with all the chefs. I took a few shots myself,” says Chris. He is an avid photographer, heading out into the country when he’s not busy running the kitchen, with its chefs and an army of kitchen hands.

“It’s so important to make sure the chefs are inspired,” says Chris, “They are incredibly talented and they have so many great ideas, even the apprentice! You have to let them grow.” This marks a real cultural shift for the hotel. Chris becomes very earnest when talking about the team with whom he works.

LO S T EAT “The energy is fantastic. Every season, we change the menu. The first place I start is to get each of the chefs to do research. And that includes what produce is being grown locally and readily available.”

So, the kitchen was receptive when the local Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre approached the Farmers with a box of oyster mushrooms.

They were grown as part of a social enterprise program operated by DNC to employ community members with disabilities. Chris was inspired to create an entirely new dish to hero the mushrooms and the local spirit they embodied. “The Local Hero” showcases the delicate oyster mushrooms along with magnificent local heirloom tomatoes from Mt Franklin Organics,

wilted spinach, served with a wedge of chargrilled polenta, a parmesan crisp and a drizzle of truffle oil. The result is a wellbalanced dish that is bright, clean with the trademark generosity of the kitchen. It is the perfect dish for the cool Autumn weather when you are craving a more hearty meal.

“You can’t just serve oysters on their own. They need to have other flavours and textures to really make it work,” he explains.

“My style isn’t fussy. I just make food that makes people happy,” he says with that grin. “Using such a beautiful, locally grown product – it was a no brainer.”

Healing Herbs

rive to the eastern edge of Daylesford, where the elms begin to give way to farmland. Turn at the Farmers Arms and just before you get to the old railway bridge, take a left and follow the road for a few hundred metres to the old butter factory on your left. What you’re confronted with is a building that is distinctly Ye Olde Worldly, even King Arthur. The air filled with the aromas of herbs brewing away.

The greeting is positively old fashioned and charming.

This is Herbal Lore. A distillery that, despite the Olde World artifice, is only celebrating their 10th birthday this month. And despite the bygone days theme, the team here are up to date and on trend with award-winning gin along with some very contemporary sounding coffee vodka. The gin and vodka are produced under Terra Australis, the fortified liqueurs are Herbal Lore. The tall elegant liqueur bottles are adorned with beautiful ornate labels reminiscent of medieval times. Each liqueur is distilled with a unique blend of herbs – all

lending their alleged medicinal properties to the beverage. “Alcohol assists the herbs to get into your system quickly,” says master distiller and founder, John Mclean. “You will be drawn to the liqueur with the healing properties you need the most,” he says. I really enjoyed tasting all of them, so I am left wondering whether I’m either a complete lush or in need of a lot of healing!

The two standouts for me are the Ginseng and the Midnight Desire. The first is distilled using Siberian Ginseng. It’s a deep burgundy in colour but not as thick as a traditional tokay or fortified. It has an almost berry flavour and whilst you can taste the ginseng, it is a really pleasant flavour which is a welcome surprise from someone who used drink the tiny vile vials prescribed by a Chinese doctor back in the 90s. An enormous glass jar with a bizarre looking tuber sits on the back shelf. “That incredible thing is Tasmanian ginseng,” boasts John proudly. “It is gigantic compared to Siberian and I believe it to be far superior.” It all adds to the ambience and vibe of the room

LO S T D R I N K - this is not only a place for enjoying a tipple or three, but a place of healing and medicine.

The second of the liqueurs that I am drawn to is called “Midnight Desire”. I wince slightly at what this implies but curious nonetheless.

It is a deep golden colour with flavours of honey and ginger. “This,” John leans in almost whispering, “is distilled with Damiana.”

Pretty sure I stared blankly back at him so he graciously explained. “Damiana is an ancient herb from Mayan times that is a powerful aphrodisiac. But it also has many other healing properties. For women need to be happy in their heart before they can be happy ‘down there’.” I laugh nervously, before asking if I can take the bottle home.

Whether or not these herbal liqueurs can cure you of all your ails is something I am not qualified to say, but a visit to Herbal Lore with generous free tastings is incredibly enjoyable and I felt rather exhilarated upon my departure. With my Midnight Desire tucked firmly under my arm.
