Packing a passion

lost the guide to where to find it

for fashion

ALPACAS are handy to have around this time of year. Not only do they protect those sweet little lambs from hungry foxes, (true story, they chase them away – totally awesome to witness)… they also provide us with a seriously exquisite fleece, which, (right up there with cashmere) is regarded as one of the finest (and warmest) in the world. (30% warmer than wool, with apologies to the afore mentioned sweet little lamb). Alpaca wool is light, super soft and is also non allergenic, so you won’t get all itchy and scratchy whilst trying to rock a fab new scarf. For years, Alpaca Passion (now at 72 Vincent Street, Daylesford) has offered Daylesford shoppers the complete alpaca boutique experience. Bringing the world’s finest alpaca fashion to town. So passionate are owners Keith Wadsworth and Liz Robinson, they also run an alpaca farm, with about 100 happy alpacas chilling out and galumphing around the foothills near Mt Buffalo. They’re so good at this alpaca caper, their rather fetching female alpaca ‘Giaconda’ won Champion Brown at the National Alpaca Show in Sydney (and for those not up to date with the current national alpaca grading system, that’s as good as it gets peeps). Clearly it’s not just Keith and Liz with the passion for Alpacas though, as they’ve just doubled the size of their Daylesford store! And if you’re thinking nah, alpaca’s not my style, think again… it’s anything but granny cardies and hippie ponchos, this is high end stuff from Kuna and Sol (think: alpaca couture) and is made from the finest baby alpaca wool, and only stocked in four or five countries in the world. Alpaca Passion also sell a fabulous range of Australian made stretchy, textured, vibrant Vigorella bodywear to wear layer, upon layer, upon layer… topped with a layer of something alpaca, (of course)! Alpaca Passion Daylesford is open 7 days 10am – 5pm, and their sister store (for those of you taking this teeny mag back home to Melbourne) is at 3/1122 High Street, Armadale, and is open Monday to Saturday 10am-5pm. For more information phone 5348 1177 or alpacapassion.com.au. kd

store

JUST down the road from Daylesford, as you head out the Daylesford-Malmsbury Road, you’ll happen upon a sweet hamlet by the name of Glenlyon. Glenlyon is as picturesque as a Central Victorian village can be, nestled in rolling farmland, home to happy cattle and teeny baby lambs, stunning vineyards tucked away on fertile hills strung with vines producing fabulous vintages and award winning wines, the Loddon River tumbling by, ancient trees lining the main street - shading beautifully restored historic homes, and a super excellent general store to boot. The Glenlyon General Store (63 Barkly Street) was reborn 12 months ago, and serves up delish brekkies and lunch, fantastic local produce, scrummy treats and coffee… (my how many times have we stopped there for coffee)? Now the store is launching something new. They’ve DIY’d themselves a stage and invited fantastic musos to grace the new performance space each Friday night. A bit of free live music and a bevvy with friends is such a fantastic way to roll into the weekend. This month the featured artists will be: Friday, July 6, Buck JR in a solo set, Friday, July 13, sublime Ballarat songstress Freya Hollick, Friday, July 20, Archer & The Long Gone Daddies, and Friday, July 27, Adrian Kosky & Friends. The musical artists aren’t the only creative types to grace the General Store, as they’ve recently invested in a schmancy art hanging system (no BluTack or nails in walls here folks) on which to hang pieces of fine art created by lovely local artists. A new exhibition will open on the first Wednesday of each month. You’re even invited to the opening of each new show, from 6 till 7pm. All pieces are for sale, so buy a drink and something for your loungeroom wall. Art will hang throughout the month, so you have something to gaze at longingly, whilst sipping your latte, and toasting your tootsies in front of their open fires. The Glenlyon General Store is open seven days. For more info on bands and exhibits phone: 5348 7922. kd

Fair fare

at the fayre THERE are soooo many hatted, lauded and applauded dining establishments in this region it’d take years to treat your tastebuds to all the delights conjured by our clever chefs and their talented teams. But if your tastebuds can’t wait years to sample the complete culinary delights of the region, fret not visiting tongues, the Glenlyon Fine Food and Wine Fayre is upon us, Sunday, July 29! Well regarded on the Victorian Food and Wine calendar, the Fayre is a celebration of over 35 of the regions’ finest vignerons, chefs, and food producers, plating up mouthwatering morsels and heavenly mouthfuls and serving tastings of outstanding vintages, bubbles and brews. The Fayre will be held in the grounds of the Glenlyon Shire Hall (Daylesford-Malmsbury Road) 10am to 4pm. Entry $12.50 (includes glass, tastings, live music and cooking demos) More info phone Joy Durston: 0418 312 935. kd

Winter in the

tropics of Hepburn MID WINTER. Prime time for open fires, chunky scarves, and hot chocolate with a mountain of marshmallows… and if you’re in Hepburn Springs, it’s also time to bust out the swimwear. The Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa is a cocoon of luxury and warmth in wintertime. Soak away a lazy couple of hours in the relaxation pool and spas, or book ahead for the Sanctuary, where the underwater spa couches, salt therapy room, steam room and monsoon showers will have you convinced you’re somewhere near the equator - rather than in the depths of a Central Highlands winter. For the low down on private mineral water baths, spa treatments, special winter packages, prices and bookings go to: hepburnbathhouse.com or call: 5321 6000. The Bathhouse is located at Mineral Springs Reserve Road, Hepburn Springs, and is open 9am to 6.30pm daily. kd

A Bee in our bonnet about honey

POKE your head into any pantry in Daylesford and you’re guaranteed to find a tub of golden deliciousness right along side the Vegemite. Des O’Toole is a man we all love ‘round these parts, as Des and his wife Debi and their swarms of talented bees deliver kilos of outstanding locally produced honey for our morning toast. Des and Debi’s bees cruise and peruse the native pollens in the Wombat State Forest, the grasses and flowers in nearby paddocks, as well as scores of magnificent gardens around town, producing many different and delicious varieties of high quality honey. Des’ honey is produced as naturally as possible using a cold extraction technique to keep all the goodness and unique flavours intact. Sample this seasons’ varieties each Sunday at the Daylesford Sunday Market (16-18 Raglan Street). Or take some O’Tooles Honey home straight from the source, at 143 Jubilee Lake Road, Daylesford. kd

As Luckwood

lost the guide to where to find it

have it...

TWO local like-minded mates, Dori and Sharon, have had a cracker of an idea. It’s an organic fruit and veggie box scheme in the Macedon Ranges area, called Luckwood Organics. The deal is: seasonal produce is sourced direct from small organic farms in the area (which are in abundance!!) and distributed to Woodend and Kyneton, where you pick up the produce box from one convenient (pre-arranged) location, saving you precious time and cutting out a few (unnecessary) middle men for the farmers. Direct food. Affordable prices. Local, seasonal, organic, locavore food accessible to all. We like. They also offer add-ons to your box like: eggs, meat and homemade baby food and soon will have complementary recipes to assist with creative cooking. If you would like to join up, just shoot them an email with your details: dori@luckwood.com.au or telephone Sharon for more information: 0487 444 090. dp 38

Four seasons in one

lost the guide to where to find it

sunny, rainy, clear, leafy Hepburn day A GROUP of talented local photographers have collaborated to bring an aptly entitled exhibition: Four Seasons of The Hepburn Shire to not only the Hepburn Shire, but also Mt Alexander’s…Sarah Corfe, Oliver Holmgren, Ivan Carter and Elizabeth Wade have used their skills with the shutter to create a series of images that highlight the ever-changing light, colour, faces, places and moods of the four seasons of the Hepburn region. Now we all know that four seasons can and do often occur in just one day, but this particular collaboration has been two years in the making! That’s a lot of seasons over 730 days!! The opening night of the Hepburn Shire exhibition is Friday, July 13 at 6:30pm and will be at the Door 3 Gallery (East Street Studios). The exhibition will then be open to the public from 10am till 5pm Saturday and Sunday, July 14-15. The Mt Alexander region exhibit will be held on Saturday and Sunday July 28-29 from 10am till 5pm, with the opening night happening at 6.30pm on the Saturday eve, at CASPA Gallery (off Hargraves St, Castlemaine, above Stoneman’s Bookroom). villages

Is it a golf town? Is it a farm town? Is it a forest village? Is it boutiquey and gorgeous? Can you get good fair trade organic coffee? And an enormous oversized statue of a giraffe? Yes. Yes to it all. It’s Trentham… and yes, you really should pay a visit. why As above, tiny Trentham is many things to many people… but since Trentham is our little secret, you’ll still be able to get a park in the main street on a Saturday. what Buy still-warm organic sourdough currant buns, peruse galleries and antiques over your latte, see live music, eat truffles in a decadent stable and celebrate the humble potato. how Trentham is a picturesque 15-20 minute drive from Daylesford through Wombat State Forest and farmland, 15-20 minutes from Woodend and 15 minutes from Kyneton.

rural couture A colourful guide to the fabulously stylish and well designed life in Daylesford. BREATHE. RELAX. LAUGH. AND BREATHE AGAIN.

What’s Trending...Design + Decor In-house Couturiere The inimitably stylish, Melinda Ross (creative director of Topham Traders) popped over for a cup of mulled wine last week. Don’t know what was more traumatizing for her; my freezing house, 1970’s venetian blinds in my open plan dining room/kitchen, tatty lounge curtains that sit 10cm from the wooden floorboards or the non colour-blocked inbuilt fireside bookshelves!

Paris Maison & Objet 2012 – trends, textiles & movie star style The future of travel is a five hour commute between Melbourne and Paris. I’ve sent a detailed email to Richard Branson. Still waiting for his reply. So, I’ve done my own Eurohopping with a visit to Ballarat’s Doyenne of Style, Melinda Ross, to hear about the latest textile trends out of Paris Maison & Objet 2012.

Slipper couture The creator of couture slipper heaven, Kirsty Powell, designs and releases a new “flower” every season from her London atelier. It’s difficult to decide whether slipper couture fits best in the fashion industry or homewares, as they seem to straddle both beautifully. Kirsty launched her first wearable art collection in 2004, at the Paris Maison et Objet homewares Exhibition.
