138 Years
lost the guide to where to find it
of good old fashioned fun

YOU know there’s a little show that happens every year at Easter in Sydney – The Royal Easter Show. It’s kinda a big deal in agricultural and fairy floss circles. If you can’t make your way to Sydney to witness the Easter Show in all its giant-bulland-show-bag glory it’s ok… there’s another celebration just up the road that more than pulls its weight as far as brilliant Easter family fun goes… The annual Maldon Easter Fair. This year marks the 138th Maldon Easter Fair – Yep! This super-fun community event has been running for 138 years! (The oldest Easter Fair in the country - Yes, wow.) This year the Maldon Easter Fair will run Thursday, April 2, until Monday, April 6. Steeped in tradition, the Maldon Easter Fair has many favourite events… starting Thursday night with the Great Aussie Scone Competition, followed by turning on the Tower Lights and an old time dance. Good Friday the open air combined church service is on from 10:30am at the beehive chimney site Main St (or the Uniting Church if the weather is bad). Saturday includes the huge Easter market, with bands, sheep shearing, gold panning, poets and treats and treasures, and an engine rally at the Maldon Village Machinery Museum. The famous Maldon Fire Brigade torch light procession kicks off from 7:30pm followed by dancing in the street on Saturday night. Sunday it’s the homemade billycart race event (soooo much fun). There’s a Hole in One comp at the Maldon Golf Club. (You could win $2000! Comp held Saturday and Sunday.) Monday from 10:30am it’s the Grand Procession. Around 1000 people gathered to watch this brilliant community tradition last year. There are cash prizes for best entrants – the stakes are high and the dress ups are awesome. The parade is followed by the great Aussie egg toss, more music, prizes and fun. For the latest info go to Maldon.org.au, facebook.com/maldoneasterfair or call Jenny: 0407 158 833. At the movies in April
DAYLESFORD has its own (completely awesome) cinema at The Rex Complex (47-53 Vincent St). Recently they’ve spruced up their website and now you can find monthly programs online complete with trailers so you can try before you buy – love it. With school hols here at the start of April there are loads of kidflicks on (no need to go to head outta town peeps! Support your local cinema!) Showing for the wee ones in April is the new Dreamworks animated film Home, (voices by Jim Parsons, Rhianna and Steve Martin) as well as Spongebob Squarepants, the Shaun the Sheep Movie (amazing Aardman animation) and a shiny new Disney Cinderella a little later in the month. (Google those Swarovski glass slippers, ah-mazing). Daylesford Cinema is a not-for-profit theatre run by local film buff volunteers. Become a member for $40 a year for discounted tickets. Yes! For more info and screening times go to therex.org.au.

with the ultimate couple

KATE and Will, Scott and Charlene, Jay-Z and Beyonce. Sure, they’re all totally perfect couples but they ALL pale in comparison to the ultimate marriage of Wine and Cheese. Since the day someone decided it’d be a good idea to throw a bit of rennet into milk and see what happens, Wine and Cheese have been MADE for each other. They’ve got that cute ‘opposites attract’ thing going on, they’re invited to all the great parties, and every time they enter a room everyone stops talking and watches them… salivating a bit. We know they’ll totally be together forever. If you’d like to hang out with Wine and Cheese you’re invited to join them on the Wine and Cheese train. This vintage steam train departs Maldon Station 7pm, Friday, April 3. Tickets are $50 first class and $40 economy and include cheese platter, (wine at bar prices). The return trip travels to Castlemaine and back. More info and bookings at vgr.com.au. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU
Art is for life
not just for Easter
OH HELLO Easter. Oh you are soooo one of our fave times of year. An extra-long weekend, a cosy autumn vibe, and a significant amount of chocolate up for grabs. What’s not to love? Something else we love about Easter is the annual Trentham Easter Art and Craft Show. This high quality art show will be held Friday, April 3, until Monday, April 6, at The Mechanics Hall (66 High Street, Trentham). (Open 10am-4pm Fri-Sun, 10am-3pm Mon.) Everyone is invited to the official opening and awards presentation Thursday, April 2, (from 7:30pm, $15pp includes wine and supper). All works at the Art Show are for sale, so it’s a great chance to find a piece for that blank wall, if you can tear yourself away from the egg hunt that is… come on you might find yourself the proud owner of a future Trentham Picasso - Surely that beats a Cadbury Crème Egg? For more info call Bette McLaren 5424 1127.

COULD April be any cuter? We think not. Easter Bunny has much to do with this cuteness, and it helps that Mr. Bunny carries a basket of choc-love with him wherever he goes. Cute + Choc + Holidays = Best Time of Year. Saturday, April 4, (10am-3pm) Easter Bunny will be visiting the Creswick Woollen Mills (Railway Pde) with a basket of chocolate goodies. Bring the kids for a fun day out, take a selfie with the Easter Bunny (you know you want to) and indulge in a little Easter chocolate. Kids can meet (and pat) some fluffy little friends and take a peek at some tiny little chicks. (Helloooo… cute explosion!) While you’re at it wander through the amazing old mill and factory outlet for the most luxurious wool, cashmere, alpaca, and possum clothing, and pick up a jacket, cardie, jumper or scarf - just in time for the weather to change. It’s all about cute and cosy. For more info call the Creswick Woollen Mills 5345 2202. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU
Daylight saving
whose idea was that anyway?
UP UNTIL now you can kind of kid yourself that Summer’s not reeeally over (ignore those dead leaves on the ground… there’s still some blue sky up there… and the thermals are still neatly folded at the back of wardrobe – they don’t exist – yet.) Until daylight saving ends winter is waaaay off in the distance. Unless you’re a ski bunny or winter Olympian, you’re probably feeling like most of us, head firmly in the sand about winter’s depressingly imminent approach. Unfortunately Daylight Saving ends Sunday, April 5, at 3am. It’s cruel saying it ends on the Sunday, when REALLY we all know it’s SATURDAY night. Before your head hits the pillow on Saturday night remember to put your clock back an hour, and when you wake up it’ll be winter. (Ok, still autumn – we’re being dramatic.) Time to dig out the thermals and scarves and boots and hats and make soup and roast potatoes. (Ahh, boots and potatoes. It’s not all that bad).

THE launch of the new Clunes Farmers’ Market this month is a brilliant chance to meet a farmer and ask about their produce (see page 16). One such farmer is Jono Hurst. Jono is launching his free range Angus beef at the Clunes Market this month. Jono and Nat’s farm ‘Brooklands’ is in nearby Blampied and it’s here that they are raising the happiest rare breed, free range beef and pork (British White Cattle and Berkshire piggies, as well as rare breed Finn sheep for wool). They are passionate about caring for their stock (the piggies have the best little homes, they’re positively glamping it up) and after years in the making they are thrilled to launch their first locally grown Brooklands free range Angus beef at the Farmers’ Market, Sunday, April 12. There’ll be various cuts available, and more beef and pork coming soon (at the farmgate and at market) For more info like Brooklands Free Range Farms on Facebook or call Jono 0422 748 670. Daylesford Remembers
12
ACROSS Australia this month commemorations will be held to honour the men and women who served in WW1. This year ANZAC day, Saturday, April 25, marks the centenary of the Gallipoli landings. It is difficult and distressing to imagine young Australians and New Zealanders, some just teenagers, landing on that rugged beach in 1915, meeting with such catastrophic and lethal resistance. By the time they were evacuated (months later) more than 8000 ANZACs had been killed, and more than 18,000 were wounded. The war correspondents at the time commentated on the ANZACs bravery, courage, and endurance. And thus the ANZAC legend was born. Daylesford will remember the brave soldiers of the time with a commemorative event for the entire community, to be held Saturday, April 11, at the Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street). Daylesford Remembers will honour the ANZACs with a free family event 6pm – 7:30pm outside the Town Hall. See the Creswick Light Horse Troop, vintage fire appliances and firefighters in period uniform, classic cars, the Daylesford Pipe and Drums band and the Daylesford Municipal Band will be playing. There will be a memorial plaque presentation by the Hon Catherine King (Member for Ballarat) to the CFA and RSL. The Last Post and Reveille will be played. Following this event there will be a concert and dance at the Town Hall (7:30pm – late) featuring the songs and music of WW1 and WW2. The Daylesford Municipal Band, the Daylesford Pipes and Drums Band, The Daylesford Swing Band, singers Maureen Andrew, Danny Spooner and Graham Maxwell, and Madam featuring Sallie Harvey, Nel Staite and Jenny Brown. Tickets for this concert with country supper are $65/$50 conc. (Balcony seats only $25 full, $20 conc., $12 children.) Buy Tickets online at trybooking.com/GORT or at eCasa, 89 Vincent St Daylesford. The Clunes Farmers’ Market
16
HOW much do we love a Farmers’ Market?! – HEAPS is the answer. We’re lucky to live in a region with nearby villages hosting Farmers’ Markets almost every weekend. And a brand new Farmers’ Market is launching this month at Clunes! The Clunes Farmers’ Market is a fully accredited Farmers’ Market and will be held on the second Sunday of each month, 9am - 1pm. The inaugural Clunes Farmers’ Market will be held Sunday, April 12, at Collins Place, (that park bit just off Fraser Street.) It will be officially opened by Lake House’s Alla Wolf-Tasker and the member for Ripon: Louise Staley at 10am. The first Clunes market will feature sooo much deliciousness from our region, (around 30 stalls) including wonderfully tasty just picked fruit and vegies, artisan cheeses from Goldfields Farmhouse Cheese, beef from Brooklands Free Range Farm, Bliss Blend Organic Tea, and the amazing Allendale Nursery will be selling seedlings of herbs and plants (native and exotic). Meet the Llamas of Whitestone Farm and be entertained with live music from Cat and Clint. There will be raffles and prizes, loads of delicious things to taste and try, horse and cart rides from Sandy Creek Clydesdales and a brilliant giant vegetable competition judged by Alla Wolf-Tasker. Give the supermarket the flick this week and head to a Farmers’ Market and buy your food fresh from the farmer. Have a chat to the growers and farmers and ask them about their produce. When was it picked? Where’s the farm? How is it grown/produced? So nice to know where your food is from. It’s all about provenance people! Then hand over your hard earned to someone who worked hard to grow it for you. No multi-million dollar middle man. Just awesome, real, market transactions. Fresh food in your pantry, grown just up the road, and a happy farmer winning your business to boot. Win-win. For the latest on the Clunes Farmers’ Market go to clunesfarmersmarket.com.au or on facebook.com/ ClunesFarmersMarket. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

IT’S NO secret that there are many artists in our midst here in the Daylesford region. The creative energy around the place is palpable. We are home to printmakers, painters, sculptors, and more than our fair share of ceramicists and artists who work with clay. Many of the clay artists in our ‘hood joined forces a few years ago to create the rich and diverse Clayspace Ceramics Co-op. These passionate and dedicated artists have recently found a new home; a fabulous creative space in East Street, Daylesford (down there tucked in-between Verde Provedores and Inside Out Dance Studio)… sort of opposite the end of Stanbridge Street – you’ll find it. Term two starts this month and Clayspace has a timetable of wonderful clay classes for all levels. Yay!! Time to get clay under the fingernails and squoosh its earthiness into some sort of lovely form. Hoorah! Minna Graham takes Wednesdays’ clay classes, and offers a Wheel and Handforming class (all levels) 1pm-3pm. A Kids’ Clay class will run from 4pm-5pm, and another Wheel and Handforming class (all levels) from 6pm-8pm. Thursdays Kim Haughie takes a Beginners’ Wheel class 10am-12pm, Handbuilding classes 1pm-3pm, and a Kids’ Clay class 4pm-5pm. Fees are $30 per student for 2 hour classes - $120 per month for members or $37.50 ($150 per month) for non-members (yes, you should totally be a member)! Clay, firing and glazes are extra. Minna’s classes begin Wednesday, April 15, Kim’s on Thursday May, 14. Register for classes at info@clayspacecoop.com or by calling Minna 0407 818 609 – or Kim 0428 726 966. Clayspace members can hire the studio space to work on clay projects for $10 a day. Email Tania Verdez for studio hire: taniaverdez@gmail.com Clayspace annual membership is $50. SOMETIMES we wonder if there’ll be future exhibitions where you can view the phones they used in the ‘olden days’ (OMG! Did you see that Nokia 5110? It had Snake on it!) Probably, then we’ll all laugh and connect with the Wi-Fi implanted in our brains and tell the vacuum cleaner to make us dinner. It is important to check in with the past as it gives us an appreciation of how far we’ve come. Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19, the annual Vintage Engine Rally will splurt, cough and belch into the John Powell Reserve, Guildford, for two days of awesome old noisy stuff. This display of old farm machinery includes shearing gear, pumps, tractors, vintage engines and vintage and classic cars. The featured engine is the Lister and tractor is the Chamberlain. WE LIVE in a funny world where you can buy mangoes in July. Just for the record… this isn’t normal. It really wasn’t so long ago that we all ate by the seasons and what didn’t grow in our backyard we just didn’t eat. As brilliant as it is to live in these times of year-round mangoes sometimes it’s nice to take a step back and live and breathe the seasons as they come, and enjoy the produce as it falls off the tree in your backyard. Each April/May our region celebrates the Autumn Harvest with the Daylesford-Macedon Produce Harvest Week Festival. This festival is an annual celebration, dating back to the times when the success of a crop dictated the lives of the people, not much has changed for our farming families really, so each Autumn you’re invited to join in the celebrations of Harvest. Locals and visitors are welcome to share in the bounty of our region, the freshest produce, workshops, delicious events, and unique flavours of our region in a wonderful series of carefully curated events. The region’s best growers, provedores, chefs, restaurateurs and vignerons will be strutting their stuff and sharing the goodness. Festival experiences include permaculture workshops and sausage making, farm gate sales and wide open cellar doors. Taste your way around the region with amazing festival tasting plates available at many favourite restaurants, take in special chefs’ dinners and classes, learn about your favourite drop from a clever local winemaker, learn things about making your own cheese and bread (to show off to your friends of course) feast on just-picked produce and make sure you hit the farmers’ markets before you head back to take home a little of the local love home. The Harvest Festival is on across the region from Saturday, April 25, until Sunday, May 3. Pick up a program around town, or go to dmproduce.com.au. The Bold and the Beautiful… and all the pretty ponies
MAKE no mistake. We are not exactly horse aficionados. We can tell the difference between a Clydesdale and a Shetland Pony, and quite frankly… that’s our entire horse repertoire. That’s why are a little bit in love with the Castlemaine and District Agricultural Society. Each year they host an annual feature show for big horses and small horses. (So the horse novices amongst us can’t get them confused.) The annual feature show is a place for the finest-fluffy-footed, proudest and most grand Clydesdales and the sweetest, prettiest miniature ponies, horses and Shetlands to strut their stuff for ribbons and rosettes. The day is a great day out for families and horse fans with a BBQ and refreshments all day and lots of lovely horsies to meet (if you ask the owners nicely). The show will be held at Camp Reserve, Forest St. Castlemaine, Sunday, April 26. Entry $5, students $2, kids under 10 free. More info at castlemaineshow.com.au.

Annie’s Trentham restaurant du Fermier (42 High Street) is a foodie fave and produces some fab inspired French farmhouse cooking, with up to 90% of her restaurant produce coming from her very own one acre garden in Malmsbury. As part of the Harvest Week Festival Annie will be opening her marvellous garden for all to visit. Join Annie for morning tea, an extensive garden tour and a light lunch. The first event (Wednesday, April 29,) has completely sold out, so they have announced another Wednesday, May 6, (quick sticks peeps! Book your place now!) Annie Smithers Malmsbury food garden tour will run from 11am – 2:30pm. Cost $85 per person. For more information about the event call 0421 458 891 or go to dufermier.com.au for bookings. Booktown
34
JUST giving you a little heads-up for next month… Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3, is Booktown at Clunes. Clunes Booktown is a brilliant booktopia with thousands of titles new, secondhand, rare and precious (and even trashy) for sale. There are important book discussions, writer’s talks, author signings, a fabulous Children’s Booktown event, and loads of fun for all. Clunes was named the 15th International Booktown in 2012, and is the only official Booktown in the Southern Hemisphere. The Booktown Festival is one of the highlights on Australia’s literary calendar and a must for lovers of the written word. Entry to Booktown is $10, children under 16 free. (Your ticket is valid across both days). The full program is now online at clunesbooktown.com.au. For up to the minute info like Booktown on facebook.com/clunesbooktown.
