Daylight Saving

2

AFTER sweating through that super-hot summer that seemed to last foreverrrrr, we sit here mid-autumn wondering when the chill will really start to kick in. (Come on Autumn we’ve got scarves and boots to wear!!) Don’t worry folks, we can ASSURE you that winter will hit us soon, and when it does you’ll be longing for those endless summer days of sunscreen and flies (OK, maybe not the flies). The cold really begins to kick in once daylight saving ends - it’s like a switch is flicked to ‘cold’ and Summer is officially over like *that*. Daylight saving ends Sunday, April 3. Put your clock back an hour before you go to bed on the Saturday night and when you wake up on Sunday - hey presto - it’ll be freezing! Dig out the thermals and flanny PJs - winter is coming (that’s what Jon Snow was on about, he’s mad about his flanny jarmies.) Bring on the cosy nights of red wine and open fires - Ahh we love this time of year! LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

She’s Apples

in Autumn

4

OH autumn. We hate to take sides, but you’re the best. You and your pretty leaves, open fires, layers of clothing and crisp sunny mornings. You are just a bit gorgeous, and around these parts, you shine! In the Central Highlands autumn is truly magical. And something extra special about the Central Highlands is that we have the perfect climate in which to grow apples! And we do! We grow millions of them! Big, delicious, crunchy, sweet, juicy apples. You see gnarled old apple trees on lonely country roads - laden with enormous fruit to forage, you find apples in backyards, hanging over fences and at roadside farm stalls (one of our faves is the Daylesford Organics apple stall on Foxs Lane, Musk Vale - just five minutes out of Daylesford, a must visit)! The Diggers Club at The Garden of St Erth (189 Simmons Reef Road, Blackwood) is celebrating this most humble of fruit at the St Erth Heritage Apple Festival, Saturday, April 2, and Sunday, April 3. Learn about the history of the Garden of St Erth, and about their wonderful espaliered apple trees. Learn how to get the most out of your apple trees with free garden tours, and gardening and cooking workshops. Discover the best companion planting options for apples and pears, learn how to prune espaliered apple trees, and how to select the best trees for your own orchard. Damien Sandercock from Piper Street Food Company will demonstrate how to create a delicious apple tarte with caramel sauce (hello)!! Taste crunchy heritage apples, sample apple ciders by Daylesford Cider Co, try different cider vinegars, and more than ten varieties of apple juices! Take the All About Apples Masterclass with Pete the Permie and David Key: this all-day event will teach you everything you need to know about growing and cropping heritage apples at home and includes lunch. There are even apple activities for the little apple lovers on Sunday from 11am – 2pm. For more info and bookings go to diggers.com.au or call St Erth: 5368 6514.

It’s Opera…

Without the Boring Bits

THE classic opera Carmen has been given new life in a contemporary take by Emotionworks. This Melbourne based company produce ‘cut opera’ (that is: ‘opera without the boring bits’), to engage a younger audience. And they’re bringing their version of Carmen to Daylesford Town Hall: Saturday, April 9. Emotionworks strip back the pretence of traditional opera and mix it up with a bit of saucy Latin, Salsa, Jazz, Blues and Gospel in a sassy cabaret style production. Award winning director Julie Edwardson has fused many musical genres in this production to create something really special. The whole idea is to make opera more fun (and to have you up and dancing)! Doors open at the Town Hall from 6:30pm, show starts at 7:30pm. Tickets are $40. Audience members under 25 are FREE! (This show is not suitable for patrons under 16 years of age.) The Unity

in our Wonderful Community

10

WE are so lucky to live in a part of the world where our sense of community runs deep. Michelle Symes is one member of our small town with an enormous sense of community. Michelle is the founder of Bake Share Care. (A not-for-profit organisation that helps others using the power of food baked with love.) Each year Bake Share Care hosts a major event: ‘Baking Our Blues Away’. It encourages everyone to bake something for someone within their local neighbourhood who is doing it tough. Baking Our Blues Away has been a tremendous success throughout Australia, the idea went viral and was supported by thousands of people around the country. This year Baking Our Blues Away will be held on Friday, July 15. Organising Bake Share Care and Baking Our Blues Away wasn’t enough for Michelle (who is clearly a supermum of two kids, works part time AND is also doing a degree at Uni…! Yes, amazing!) Michelle has also embarked on a personal journey to endeavour to cook a meal for a different local family each week, for the 52 weeks of the year. This beautiful, heart-felt project is called 52 Gifts. Michelle loves to cook, and truly believes in the life altering gift of receiving a home cooked meal – made with love and fresh local produce. Each week Michelle chooses a local family who could use a little pick-me-up. It’s not charity, it’s a physical display of goodwill and generosity of spirit. Michelle chooses her recipients carefully, they might be elderly, unwell, grieving or just struggling to make ends meet. Michelle’s aim is to walk away from her recipients knowing they feel spoilt and cared about. Michelle is documenting her 52 Gifts journey on Instagram (@52gifts) and at 52gifts.com.au. Each week she shares the story of her recipients and beautiful photographs of the meals she creates, and the Menu Du Jour. Other locals have cottoned-on to her generosity and are helping by donating produce from their gardens. To see how you can help, or to be inspired by her beautiful story go to 52gifts.com.au. Run The Rock

IT’S a great time of year to head outdoors. It’s not so hot that you need an alpaca to carry 100 litres of iced water for you, and not so cold that you need your Antarctic gear and team of dog sled huskies. That makes the Run The Rock running event one of our fave runs of the year. The event (held at Hanging Rock reserve just out of Woodend) offers a 5km walk or run, a 12km run, a 20km run, and a 2km kids’ run! All the runs are off road with loads of varying terrain and you’re promised all the fresh air you can suck into your thirsty lungs. This year’s Run The Rock event will be held on Saturday, April 16. Register now at solemotive.com/events/run-therock-2016 (early bird discounted entry fees close April 8) or register on the day from 7:15am. All the deets including registration, course info and entry fees are at solemotive. com (Oh, and it can get cold this time of year, better bring the huskies just in case.)

Take a step back in time and see loads of vintage engines, pumps, shearing gear, cream separators, tractors and classic cars. This year’s featured tractor is the Lanz Bulldog and the featured engine is the McDonald. It’ll be a loud, smelly awesome day out. REMEMBER when the internet came along and suddenly the naysayers were standing on their well-worn soap boxes predicting the demise of the book? Hmmm… Well those naysayers are invited to Clunes - Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1, to experience the 10th anniversary of the Clunes Booktown Festival (where their little nay-saying cotton socks will be well and truly knocked off.) Artists’ Books

Beautiful Pageturners

ARTISTS’ books are not merely books owned by creative types… Artists’ books are an art genre all of their own. An artist book is created when an artist makes a book into a work of art. As part of the Clunes Booktown Festival (Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1,) biblio artists including the Clunes Art Group, Nicholas Jones and Barry Wemyss will be exhibiting their works at the Bluestone Exhibition Space at the Old Wesley Bluestone, Clunes. The Clunes Art Group has produced an Artists’ Book featuring interpretations of local landscapes. Nicholas Jones is a highly regarded Melbourne artist working with lovely old books and a super sharp scalpel, carving intricate patterns into the books to give them new life and meaning, and Barry Weymyss will be showing a variety of his own beautifully handbound work. You can teach an old book new tricks. View the full Booktown program at clunesbooktown.com.au LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

Gold Fever

Treasure Maps from a Bygone Era

THIS neck of the woods is well known for its gold rush history. In the mid-1800s the whole world caught a particularly virulent case of gold fever and hurried down to the land down-under to pluck heavy nuggets from the earth. In Victoria, gold was first found at Clunes – and the town still retains much of its 1800s gold rush heritage, and the surrounding land still bears obvious landmarks from the golden era. As part of the Clunes Booktown Festival the State Library of Victoria will be exhibiting a range of antique maps, with a particular focus on gold mining in the Clunes area. Pour over county, parish and township plans, as well as old lithographs illustrating gold mining processes. The antique maps will be on display at the Old Wesley Bluestone at Clunes during the Booktown Festival (Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1). The Booktown Festival Program is available at clunesbooktown.com.au

Raising Money for you and your School

34

DURING the summer holidays a fire tore through Daylesford Secondary College. Unfortunately, significant damage was sustained to the Science wing, Library, Careers, Italian and Computer Technology areas, and many precious resources (including decades worth of teaching tools) were lost. The school is rebuilding, and is hosting fundraisers throughout the year to help raise money to refit the school. Saturday, April 30, you’re invited to support the school’s Car Boot Sale. If you have stuff you’d like to get rid of, (but can’t be bothered hosting a garage sale) load up the car and roll into the DSC Oval from 9:30am (for a 10am start). Each site costs $25, (all of which goes to the school - and you get rid of all that stuff you’ve been meaning to take to the op shop. It’s a total Win-Win!) For more info and to book your spot on the oval (essential) call DSC: 5348 2367. The Car Boot Sale will be on 10am-2pm. Come and support our great school! LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU
