THE MEMBERS of ClaySpace are all travellers. They are on a creative ceramic journey. A journey directed by their love for the magic of clay and making beautiful things with their hands. Two years ago, this love for clay motivated a group of local ceramicists to create a cooperative. ClaySpace. So far ClaySpace has organised a number of exciting events, guest artist talks, exhibitions, and the building of a wood fired kiln. They have opened a retail outlet (next door to the Bookbarn at Lake Daylesford), and have plans for many more exciting events such as a ceramic conference, an annual ceramic encouragement award, and the creation of a skill list available for the community. However, due to an expensive and tight Daylesford rental market, ClaySpace hasn’t found an ideal home. (Studio/ workshop/exhibition space). Ideally this space would be a place to share with the community, to meet and present artists talks, offer advice to beginners, and a space for exhibitions of ceramic work. There’s a Murmur ‘round Town (Three shows only)

DAYLESFORD performance group Murmur Collective formed in 2008 to bring to town a contemporary and dynamic theatre experience. Murmur Collective returns to the stage for Words in Winter to present a dramatic reading of When the World Was Green: A Chef’s Fable, by Sam Shepard and Joseph Chaiken. Founding Murmur Collective members Ivor Bowen and Devon Taylor bring the reading to life with video, projections and lighting to add emphasis and drama. This intriguing and unsettling work presents a condemned man’s last thoughts as told to a journalist. Murmur Collective will perform the piece in the multi media room at Door 3, (East Street, Daylesford) nightly: Friday, August 3, till Sunday, August 5 at 7:30pm. IT HAS been 25 years (gulp… yes TWENTY FIVE years) since pop-ette Kylie Minogue and her spiral perm bounced out of Ramsay Street and into our lives doin’ the Locomotion. Ahh and they said it wouldn’t last. Along the way, Kyles has spawned many imitators, and one in particular stands out from the sequinned crowd. The 100% Kylie Show is the longest running and most successful Kylie tribute show on the planet. Lucy Holmes is Kylie’s most well known lookalike, and sparkling on stage with her backing dancers (including some of Kylie’s own) it’s mighty hard to tell the difference. 100% Kylie will be 110% performing at The Palais (111 Main Road Hepburn Springs) Saturday, August 4, from 8:30pm. THE BEAUTY of this region has inspired generations of artists to create. Local artist Jodie Fergusson-Batte is no exception and has been busy in her studio, armed with brushes and paints creating her strikingly unique portraits for a special exhibition, ‘An Ode to Daylesford’. The exhibition will be held at Made Gallery (In the historic Raglan building, 1 Camp Street, Daylesford) Friday, August 3, to Sunday, August 26. Jodie’s recognisable works can often be spotted around town, (for example on the walls at the Farmers’ Arms and at Ego’s Culinaria, and indeed on the front cover of the magazine in your hands right now! – HA! Made you look)! You can also spot a Jodie original on the labels of her delicious range of hand blended boutique She-Tea teas, (which can be sipped at many local cafes, and purchased around the traps and online as well. These literary odes to Daylesford will hang alongside Jodie’s works, creating a space that sums up the essence and magic of our special town. You are invited to experience the magic on opening night. Pop in from 6pm Friday, August 3, for glasses of superb local bubbles from Passing Clouds winery, and a preview of the exhibition. Meet the artist and maybe even sus her out about a commissioned piece! An Ode to Daylesford will be open each Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10am till 5pm. Jodie is also offering tastings of fine local wines from Passing Clouds from 2 till 5pm each day. Wander down to the Daylesford Primary School oval (Vincent Street) between 9am and 1pm (in said gumboots) and hit the Daylesford Farmers’ Market. Each month your basket will overflow with the most delicious morsels, treats and fresh picked niceties from local farmers and producers of deliciousness. This month the market welcomes a new milk producer to the gang, Inglenook Dairy. Inglenook produces a range of luscious fresh milks, including an unhomogenised cream-top full cream milk – heaven! DAYLESFORD Primary School teaches the littlest Daylesfordians how to read. Awww. In conjunction with Words in Winter, the school will host its annual Book Fair (at the primary school gym, on the schoolgrounds, Vincent Street) Saturday, August 4 and Sunday, August 5. There will be thousands of quality second-hand page turners to rummage through, with proceeds going towards the school literacy program, everybody wins! On Saturday the monthly farmers’ market will be held on the school oval, with local deliciousness to sample and purchase, and on Sunday browse the books, then trawl the community market craft stalls and trash and treasure. Of course there will be the prerequisite Sunday sausage sizzle… the delicious aroma of which is genetically engineered to make you want to buy books to support the local kiddies at school. Resistance is useless… buy a sausage... and a book! Open 10am-4pm both days. Free entry.

WHO DOESN’T love a bit of fancy dress? The annual Book Ball is a much loved highlight on the Words in Winter Program. It’s a gala evening of fun, dancing and friends (and dress ups), at the Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street). Come in costume as your favourite book character… or in your schmancy finery as the main character in your own fabulous autobiography. There are prizes for best costume and best dancing. Tickets are $25 a head. BYO supper and drinks. Organise a table of ten, or more, just remember to wear your dancing shoes! 2012 is the National Year of Reading. So if the only pages you’ve managed to turn this year are those of 50 Shades of Grey, it’s time to give your self some real literary lovin’ and immerse yourself in the annual Words In Winter festival. This year’s program (held thoughout Daylesford and surrounding villages) features scores of readings, workshops, signings, events, poetry, bards, plays, odes, songs and lyrics, authors, inspriation, and tall tales and true. There are events for kids, for those who love a yarn, for those who love a crossword, a dance, a game of scrabble. There are even Words in Winter events for those who love a bargain. The official opening will be held Friday, August 3, at the Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Road) in an evening of ‘Ballads, Bards and Bushwhackers’ (full details page 20). We are spoilt with some truly inspiring headlining writers heading our way: Lise Rodgers, Shaun Tan, Anne Gleeson, Kerry Greenwood, Ailsa Piper, Tor Roxburgh, Ken Haley, to name a few. These authors will be hosting discussions, workshops, signings and seminars to whet your appetite for knowledge and, yes… to have you yearning to read more. The ABC Open ‘Now and Then’ project is a unique workshop. Bring along a photo of your younger self, be photographed with ‘the Young You’ and write yourself a message. What would you tell a younger version of you? Buy the one way ticket? Listen in school? Don’t drink instant coffee? (Yep, that last one). The ‘Now and Then’ project will be held in Daylesford, Creswick and Clunes. The wonderful gala Book Ball is back (for full details see page 12), as is the Magic Lantern and Music show (from the Museum of Victoria). Of course, the local libraries are all over Words in Winter and are hosting The Clever Town Challenge at Clunes, Creswick, Daylesford, Maryborough, Newstead and Trentham Libraries. WHEN it all gets too much don’t you just want to run away and join the circus? Ahh the romantic care-free life of acrobats and their big top antics. If you live around here, you don’t have too far to run. Creswick Neighbourhood Centre (19-21 Victoria Street) is offering a six week Introduction to Circus Skills course, from Tuesday, August 7. Bring along your hand-eye coordination and learn the juggling basics. Make your own juggling balls and learn some pretty rad juggling tricks – (next stop, Circus Oz). Have a crack at the Diabolo and Sock Poi (that’s what experienced fire twirlers use… ooooh!) DAYLESFORD Men’s Shed is hosting a fundraising dinner as part of Words in Winter. The topic of the evening is relevant to us all. ‘Life’s Transitions’. Ahh yes, time waits for no man… so as it ticks on by, it’s best to be ready for whatever life is going to throw your way. The evening features guest speaker the Hon Jeff Kennett, who (as Chair of Beyond Blue) knows a thing or two about strategies to help people through life’s major changes. The evening will offer insight into life’s transitions from youth to retirement. The dinner will be held at Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street) Tuesday, August 7, from 5:45pm for a 6:15 start. THE OLD Hepburn Hotel is home to many a legend. From the outstanding espresso martinis (quality tested by well... us, … um, strictly for research purposes only), to the pub menu the locals love, to the legends the four walls could tell, the Old Hep, as we affectionately know her, is a classic country pub that, quite simply, delivers the goods. Budding Banjos, Henrys and bush balladeers are invited to take to the mic to perform bush ballads, sing a tune, or recite a favourite poem or yarn you’ve heard along the way. (we love our shiny new book town) NOW that Clunes has racked up super-duper official International Book Town status it’s pulling no punches at Words in Winter this month and showcasing some pretty spekky WIW events. On Sunday, August 12, Clunes plays host to their first ever annual book sale. There’ll be thousands of books on sale from the booksellers of Clunes, priced from $1 to $5. (Back up the ute! Hello!! There are bargains to be had!!) The sale is on from 10am at various Clunes bookshops. For most of the day there will be live music throughout the town, and a sausage sizzle and Devonshire tea at the RSL, (30 Fraser Street) (…Well if you’re loading the ute full of books, you’re going to need some sustenance!) 9:30am-2pm. And once you’ve perused the books and scoffed the scones, a bit of music and poetry could be in order. Roll up to the Nash (The National Hotel, 35 Fraser Street) from 3pm (entry: gold coin donation) where poets and musicians from near and far will take to the open mic to entertain us all over a pot of something cold and beery. Trivia nights bring out the crazed competitor, and the vaults of useless information trapped inside us all. The Daylesford Community Brass Band is hosting a trivia night, Friday, August 17, to raise funds in their 150th year. Rally together your know-it-all mates, and book a table. MELBOURNE author Kerry Greenwood is the creator of the wonderfully glamourous Phryne Fisher 1920s detective novels. Loaded with fashion, intrigue, mystery and a healthy dose of sass, most recently Phryne has graced the small screen in the popular ABC1 series: Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. Words In Winter welcomes Kerry Greenwood to Clunes, Saturday, August 18, at a special book signing at We’re All About Books, (corner Fraser and Service Streets, from 4pm). Following this, join Kerry at the Clunes Town Hall (Bailey Street) 5:30-7:30pm, for an interesting insight into her life of words. Not only does she have her hands full with Phryne, Kerry has also written award winning children’s books, plays and six non-fiction works. Kerry will discuss writing, life, and everything in between. Local band ZebraHeard weren’t talking collectively when they named their band, they were aiming more along the lines of ‘Listen to what Zebra Heard’… (a-ha! The name of the new album! …See what we did there?). ZebraHeard launch their new album at Horvat’s Wine Bar (Shop 6, Howe Street Daylesford) Saturday, August 18, from 9pm. Check out their unique fusion of futuristic soul grooves, with a bit of electro boogie afro-funk, some spoken word (from Zebra himself) and sweet harmonies thrown in there to boot. THE MERE mention of the name ‘Piper Street Food Company’ gets the mouth watering. Kyneton’s Piper Street Food Co (89B Piper Street) was born when Damien Sandercock’s delicious hobby (creating elaborate terrines and French Charcuterie at home) was becoming a bit too expensive… so he decided to sell them. Bless his cotton socks for sharing the terrine love! And it’s more than just the locals singing the praises of his terrines, rillettes and French farmhouse deliciousness… Piper Street Food Co have just landed themselves a couple of very tasty awards. They picked up three Golds and two Silvers at the Royal Melbourne Fine Food Awards, and an Artisan award from Delicious Magazine’s Produce Awards. SEAN McMahon’s whirlwind summer romance with a 1930’s Kay parlour guitar turned out to be true love. Whilst travelling through California he fell head over heels with this classic beauty, and returned back to Melbourne, Kay on his arm. Inspired, he penned a collection of songs that would eventually become an album. With Alison Ferrier on violin and harmonies, and Tim Murphy on double bass, Western Union was born. With a little help from the ever excellent songwriter/guitarist Jeff Lang, the album Live at the Last Hotel was complete. AUGUST. We’re past half way folks! Just as July signals the equivalent monthy-annual-thing to Wednesday’s weekly hump day, August feels as if the long, oh-so-sweet slide to summer has begun. We’re sure we’re not just dreaming it, there’s an undeniable waft of spring in the air, (isn’t there?) Early blossom is teasing us with colour and fragrance, there are buds hanging off every twig in town just busting for those warm September rays to give them the okay to unfurl. But it’s the bulbs that have really thrown back the dormant winter doona on the garden beds ‘round town. Oh yes. It’s that time of year. Bring on the daffodils. From Thursday, August 30, to Sunday, September 9, Kyneton celebrates spring and everyone’s favourite bulb with the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival. This year marks the 40th year of the festival and the program is more than just ooh-ing and ahhing over those happy trumpety-like blooms. It encompasses the arts, fabulous gardens (of course), flower shows, (um, of course, again) local providores and vignerons, a glittering old-time ball, and some good ol fashioned country hospitality and fun. Kyneton will be ablaze with the golden bulb, with no less than twenty two local gardens open for display. The arts program features a series of one act plays, literary events, buskers, and a variety spectacular, with many local and renown artists on the bill. But it wouldn’t be the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival without a certain event that has the township counting down the days… The Annual Ferret Race. Yes, nothing says daffodils like ferret racing, and you can be sure the furry four legged fiends will have their cute(?) little game faces on before the big event. Game on moles… um, sorry… ferrets.
