and on our plates

WE DID IT! We survived winter! We are sooo close to September you can smell it. The trees are hinting at blossom, leaf buds are contemplating the big unfurl, the days are longer and the first of the months ending in ‘ber is almost upon us. In these climes September is the unofficial 4th month of Winter, but shhh, just go with the Spring vibe ok? On Sunday, September 1, Ellender Estate Winery (260 Green Gully Road) is hosting a Melbourne Food and Wine ‘Put Victoria On your Table’ event: ‘The Spring Graze’. This is a celebration of the new tastes and flavours that come with the new season. Chef Michael de Jong will be working his magic on the wood fired oven, cooking suckling pig for the event. Lunch will be matched with their new 2011 Pinot Noir. Gather friends and graze across the long table. Cost $70pp. For more info and bookings (essential as numbers are limited to 40,) call Jenny: 5348 7785.

Much Ado About

Words and Cocktails JOSS WHEDON is just so awesome. Back in the Buffy days he used to hang with the cast and do readings of Shakespeare for kicks. And has ever since. Joss’ life after slaying vampires has certainly not been idle. Most recently, Joss has given years of his life to The Avengers movie. In the middle of shooting The Avengers he took 12 days off and sneakily shot his glorious take on Much Ado About Nothing at his house. The film has critics and audiences swooning. Joss’ delicious twist on Will’s wise old words, makes ‘Ado’ an apt Opening Night feature to launch Words In Winter. Yes? Oh yes indeed. Head to the Rex Theatre (47-53 Vincent St, Daylesford) Friday, August 2, from 7pm to get into the swing, with drinks and the Daylesford Swing band. Film starts at 8pm. Tickets $14/$10. The film will be followed by Shaken Shakespearean cocktails (also apt) at Jimmy’s Bar at Frangos & Frangos (82 Vincent St) More info: wordsinwinter.com

WHO DOESN’T love a firefighter? NO ONE that’s who. Men love them, women love them, little kids love them, big kids love them, even chihuahuas love them. Well… c’mon, how many chihuahuas have you heard whinge about a firefighter? See? Our point exactly. On Saturday, August 3, the Glenlyon Group of Fire Brigades is hosting a fundraiser at the Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street) to help raise much needed money for some new equipment pre-fire season. The night kicks off from 7pm and will roll on ‘til 9:30pm, with Kyneton’s Sacred Heart College Show Band and the Daylesford Swing Band playing loads of fave tunes to get everyone up and dancing. Tickets are $15 on the night. Under 18s free. BYO drinks and nibbles (and chihuahuas). For more information call Marc Dankers 0418 560 477.

SMALL TOWN rivalry is kind of like sibling rivalry. In reality you really do love each other, but boy it’s a bit fun to have a win over them sometimes. Words In Winter is a festival for all the small towns in the region. It’s a time to come together and share stories and words, performances and ideas. And it’s also a time to decide once and for all, which town is the brainiest and to show your sister villages who is THE BEST. It’s time for the much anticipated annual Clever Towns Crossword Challenge. Scaling to the peak of Mt Cleverest is not easy. You have to be well prepared. You have to have your wits about you. You have to be full of general knowledge and know how to spell potentially tricky words. Spelling is vital knowledge in the region. After all, we have a town called Korweinguboora ‘round here, so it’s best to sharpen up your spelling skills. Sheesh! You don’t want to stuff that up in front of the Mayor of Korweingi. (Note: there is no actual Mayor of Korweinguboora… and potentially no question about Korweingi on the puzzle… just keeping you on your toes there.) The Clever Towns Crossword Challenge will be held at the libraries of Clunes, Creswick, Daylesford, Maryborough, Newstead and Trentham, on Saturday, August 3, at 10am sharp! Race along to your local to help your town solve a general knowledge crossword. Each town will be battling it out to solve the crossword first. The winning town will be shrouded in the glory of victory and score bragging rights for 12 months, and as we all know, bragging rights among siblings are priceless. The libraries are located at Clunes: 53 Fraser Street, Creswick: 68 Albert Street, Daylesford: Cnr Bridport and Albert Streets, Maryborough: Cnr Nolan and Alma Streets, Newstead: 45 Lyons Street, Trentham: 13 Albert Street. The school of

Hard Covers. (and paperbacks.) BACK IN ye-olde times people read these crazy ancient contraptions called ‘books’. They were made of paper and had words inside them. Some even had pictures! Kooky huh? Back in an era pre-Kindle, iPad and other e-reader thingies, there were books and they were lovely. You don’t need a permit for an archaeological dig to get your hands on a few pre-loved books around here either… Saturday, August 3 and Sunday, August 4, Daylesford Primary School is hosting its annual Book Fair. Held in conjunction with Words in Winter, the Book Fair is a great opportunity to unearth some quality second hand books, and help the school’s literacy program in the process. There will be thousands of books to rummage through. The Book Fair will be held 10am to 3pm on both days at the school gym. (Daylesford Primary is on Vincent Street). For more info call the school 5348 2480, or go to wordsinwinter.com

out of my head unfortunately

WRITING great song lyrics has to be one of the most difficult arts to master. This is why the Top 40 mostly consists of pretty young things wearing little, and smiling lots as they infect you with irritating ear worms that are harder to remove from your head than lice. The prettiness and catchiness distracts you from the oohs and ahhs, maybebaby clichés and from thinking too much. Real songwriting is a skill. Writing beautiful words that connect with an audience, ain’t easy. Words in Winter presents a songwriting workshop: ‘Inside The Songs Of...’ Hit the Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Road) from 1pm on Sunday, August 4, and be inspired as guest songwriters: Tony English (Pennyweight), James Griffin (Ghost Town Bridge) and Anthony Petrucci (Souls on Board) perform and share their stories of inspiration, writing processes and experiences in music. Entry is $5. For more info call the pub 5348 2207.

The Tour de Chook comes to Newstead

SOMETIMES while our feet are wandering through galleries we find our minds wandering as well… “Sure that Monet is lovely… dappled light, dancing colours, blah de blah… but where are the cyclists and chooks?” Sometimes all you really ever want is a curator to team the epic themes of competitive bike riding and egg layers. One genius local artist Allex Hall has read our minds and has produced a fantastical body of paintings and prints of cyclists, chooks, and occasionally cyclists AND chooks. In what must surely be a world first the Cyclists and Chooks Exhibition is on display at Dig Café (2 Panmure Street, Newstead). Allex’s work captures competitive cycling in both the velodrome and great outdoors, and chickens in portraiture. Allex’s work is expressive, emotive and humourous, and now showing at Dig until Wednesday, August 7. (Open Wed, Thurs and Sun 9am-4pm, and Fri and Sat 9am-9pm) More info: 5476 2744.

Gloves off

lost the guide to where to find it

it’s a trivia night

WHAT DO you think of when we say pies and wedges? A calorie laden lunch? Perhaps impractical shoes at a footy match? Or maybe, like us, you think of Trivial Pursuit? Oh the elation of being the first to fill your pie with coloured wedges. Not that we really knew who won bronze in the cycling at the 1932 Olympics (c’mon, everyone cheats for the orange wedge). As anyone who has been to a trivia night knows, trivia is no trivial pursuit. In some cases it’s more like trivia to the death, with rival tables doing dodgy iPhone googling and listening in to whispered guesses from nerdy table 7. Trentham Primary School is hosting a trivia night Saturday, August 10, (Mechanics Hall, High Street Trentham, from 6:30pm, tickets $15pp). Get a table of your brainiest buddies together for a night of fun and useless information. Funds raised goes towards a new kitchen garden program. For more info or to book call Sandy Watson 0401 714 880.

What’s the Buzz

lost the guide to where to find it

on the Pugs?

PUGSLEY BUZZARD is one busy dude. His Facebook check-ins read more like one of those international departures boards constantly flicking over airline destinations… San Francisco, Hobart, Luxembourg, Kathmandu, New Orleans, Sydney, Belgium, Perth…. wow. In between all this travel he’s on stage doing what he loves best: playing his unique blend of dark hoodoo blues, and blazing stride-style piano playing. Pugsley is half way though recording a new album. Whilst playing a few gigs over in SanFran and New Orleans, he put down six new tracks with Luis Rojas. Pugsley was joined by Melbourne tuba player Nathan Ford, and some of the top jazz, blues and funk musos in New Orleans, and just quietly, everyone who has heard this recording has been mightily blown away! As an independent artist, in order to fund the second half of his album, Pugsley has initiated a crowd funding campaign. He is asking fans of his work and lovers of the blues to get on board, and pay for some cool Pugsley rewards. The list of items is long and awesome, and here are a few of our faves: Donate $75 and become a member of the postcard club, receive handwritten postcards from Pugsley when he’s on tour overseas in September. Donate $300 (+ expenses) and get a Pugsley kitchen show at your place, he’ll cook up some hot Creole recipes at yours. Donate $2000 and score a day of action with Pugsley: shark wrestling, fencing, parachuting… choose your own adventure. Or just throw a donation his way in the PayPal tip jar on his website pugsleybuzzard.com. To hear what all the fuss is about see Pugsley live at the Savoia Hotel (69 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) on Saturday August 10, from 9pm. This is a free gig (which kind of defeats the purpose of fundraising, perhaps pass the hat around for him on the night? Go on, he’s awesome, and you’re mighty lucky to see him for free in Hepburn!) For more info call the pub 5348 2314 or check out his website for info on how to get involved in his crowd funding plan. 12

Humming and Drumming

lost the guide to where to find it

anything but hum-drum

YOU’RE NOT a hippy. No. You just do a bit of yoga every now and then… you just order chai lattes occasionally, and sometimes you might even grab a quick quinoa salad for lunch. Sure you’ve had your tarot cards read – who hasn’t? And you just pick the organic carrots because they look a bit less like orange rhythm-sticks than the others. You holiday in Byron Bay because, well, it’s bloody Byron Bay, why wouldn’t you? And sure, you lit incense... at uni. But nope. You’re definitely not a hippy. And neither are the hundreds of other non-hippies who will gather at the Castlemaine Town Hall (Lyttleton St) on Saturday, August 10, and Sunday, August 11, for the 13th Annual Castlemaine Health and Wellbeing Expo. This event originally began as a space for practitioners of alternative therapies to explain and demonstrate their natural and spiritual practices and gentle living options. In 13 years it has exploded, with the interest in alternatives booming, and endless new options for health and wellbeing readily available. This winter weekend is an opportunity to sniff around (beyond the nag champa) and discover everything you need to nourish your body, feed your mind, nurture your spirit and calm your heart. Dig a little deeper into topics you’re curious about by attending lectures and workshops. Focus your spiritual awareness, tune into your chakras, do a bit of sacred sound chanting, meditate and quiet the mind, learn about dream analysis, try delicious healthy and nurturing food, experience the harmony of group drumming, slow down for Tai Chi or Qigong, learn about the magic of crystals, and other ancient alternatives to combat the craziness of modern life. The Expo is Victoria’s largest and longest running country alternative health and wellbeing expo, run by passionate volunteers and practitioners from Central Victoria and beyond. Open your mind, calm your breath, hop into your Kombi and head to Castlemaine. For more info ask the universe or go to sevencircles.com.au or call 5475 2141. 14

Star sign Virgo

THE AVERAGE vegie patch is planted in spring, has a few tomatoes, a couple of lettuces and, go crazy... maybe some zucchinis. Chances are, these average patches are planted on a lazy Saturday afternoon when there’s nothing on the telly, or the calendar. Plant ‘em in the average dirt, sprinkle a few average snail pellets, add an average sized can of water and shazzam instant vegies. Now this is all well and good, if you want average vegies. But humble plants are sensitive to their wider environs, including subtle influences from the moon. Now we’re not getting all hippy on you here, (just a little bit) but it makes a difference to your crop if you plant your vegies to the lunar cycle. Variations in moonlight and lunar gravity can affect the way your little seeds grow. Oh yes! Learn all about Moon Planting at Garden of StErth (Simmons Reef Rd, Blackwood) Sunday, August 11, from 11am. Cost $35. Bookings: 5368 6514. Peas out man. 15

Slamming rhymes… it’s poetry in motion

SLAM dancing and slam dunking, pfft. So yesterday. The new slam is Poetry Slam. The chance for proper poets and wannabe wordsmiths of all genres to step up to the mic and slam us with their grouse words. (FYI: their words will probably be better than the afore mentioned ‘grouse’.) Poetry Slams are popping up everywhere, in pubs, backyards, and voila… at Kyneton’s Stockroom Gallery. (98 Piper Street) The 3rd Pipe Up Poetry Slam will be held Friday, August 16, at 6:30pm. Check out feature poet Carrie Hagan performing work from her chapbook ‘Charcoal and Red Lipstick’ Meena Shamaly will be joining her in a collaborative piece as well. There will be other poets from near and far stepping up to the mic, great wine, and superdelish catering by Nola Poorboy. Food, wine and poetry. Possibly the perfect winter’s evening. Entry is free. For more info search Pipe Up Poetry Macedon Ranges on Facebook.

A big deal

lost the guide to where to find it

for Little Hampton

THERE are many teeny hamlets dotted around Central Victoria. Pretty little blink-and-you’ll-miss-them places like Spring Hill, Sandon and Rocklyn and appropriately named Little Hampton. Many years ago Little Hampton had a post office. Built in 1877, the Little Hampton Post Office was aptly small. Indeed, the building is so small that we wonder if the inhabitants of Little Hampton were perhaps slight of stature? Whatever size they were, their Post Office served the community for 95 years. In more recent times, the PO was acquired by the Daylesford and District Historical Society, and has been restored to celebrate its 135th birthday. They are having a grand reopening of the restored PO at the Historical Society (100 Vincent Street, Daylesford) on Saturday, August 17 at 2pm. There will be a small historic display and refreshments served. The Historical Society is open Saturdays, Sundays and school holidays: 1pm-4:30pm.

The wheels on the bus go

lost the guide to where to find it

all the way to Daylesford

THE WORDS ‘public transport’ conjure images of sardinetin-packed, sweaty, stinky journeys in cities with a mélange of humankind on Very Important Individual Missions. ‘Public transport’ can also be perceived as dodgy, dangerous, expensive, reliably unreliable and a necessary evil. Sorry Public Transport, the truth hurts huh? On the other hand… the words ‘Community Bus’ conjure images of sunny day sing-alongs in a mini bus with friends. A community bus is welcoming and warm, friendly and accessible, punctual and smells pleasant… like Windex and fresh coffee… And that’s because your friendly driver just popped her KeepCup (brimming with a steaming, single origin latte) into the cup holder before washing the windows. Oh how we love a community bus. The tiny villages around here are a bit small for an-every10-minute-peakhour-express-Metro-service from A to B… However, the powers that be (and some handy State and Local Government funding) have just launched a Community Bus for the Hepburn Shire. It’s early days… but it’s here! The bus runs Fridays only between Glenlyon, Denver and Daylesford. Pick up is from your place (oh yes) and there are four ‘Bus Stops’ in town. The Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre, the churches, Bridport Street, and Springs Medical Centre. Drop off time is around 10:30am, and the return trip leaves town around 1pm. (The plan is to extend the service to four more routes: Franklinford/Clydesdale, Smeaton/Kingston/ Newlyn, Smeaton/Korweinguboora and Trentham… baby steps people… the New York subway system wasn’t built in a day…) Bookings for the bus are essential, and must be made before 5pm Wednesday to travel on Friday. To book your seat on the bus call SmartRun on 1300 443 534. And noooo, of course there’s no Myki! Pffft! To ride the bus it’ll cost you a gold coin. Lovely. The bus is run by Hepburn Health Service. For more info, (or to volunteer as a bus driver – go on… you know you want to!) call Janine 5321 6556. 18

Words in Winter

lost the guide to where to find it

warms the mind, warms the soul WINTER in Central Victoria is awesome. You don’t need to mow the lawn as much, you don’t need to slather sunscreen on every exposed centimetre of skin, and there are less smelly people around. Win-win-winter we say! Another benefit of this time of year is the cold outside temps entice us to stay indoors and get stuck into some of the finer indoor pursuits, such as reading. Words In Winter (Friday, August 2 - Saturday, August 31) is our celebration of words in all their guises; books, songs, performance, film, poetry, storytelling, entertainment, and ideas and inspiration rising from the written word. Now in its 12th year, the 2013 Words In Winter program is packed with exciting events: readings by world class authors and well awarded wordsmiths, there are events for families, and for lovers of the literary, there is something in the program for everyone. On August 9 – 11 The Rex Theatre (Vincent Street, Daylesford) will be transformed into the Festival Hub. Furnished by The Mill Markets, the space will be loungey and relaxed. It’ll be home to readings, book signings, DJs, Boggle (oh yes, Boggle and Bickies.. bring it on) a mini market, and a hip hop performance and workshop by the Flybz on Saturday, August 10. ($5. Come and learn about writing your own rap). As well as films, live music, storytelling, readings, writers’ workshops, book launches, and a festival club on the Saturday night. Some of the amazing authors hitting the festival include: Graeme Simpson, Toni Jordan, Carmel Bird, John Romeril, Neil Boyack, Graeme Kinross-Smith and more. Buffalo Girls Coffee Bar (4c Duke St) will be hosting other worldly wordy events too, including the launch of Tanya Loos’ ‘Daylesford Nature Diary - Six Seasons in the Foothill Forests’ (Sat, August 10, 11am-12pm. Entry $5-$10 donation to Hepburn Wildlife Shelter). Chat to Tanya about her local wildlife observations. Ahh! There’s not enough room on the page for all the words we need to share with you! Don’t worry! The full program and more is at: wordsinwinter.com!

Le Tour de Scrabble The Daylesford Stage

IF YOU WERE training to be, say… the Country Victoria Scrabble Champion, what training regime would you undertake? The Couch to Triple Letter Score podcast? Would you hire a personal trainer to spot you whilst you bench press thesauruses? Do you run up the steps of the State Library Rocky Balboa style, and run inside to the Dictionary section? (FYI DDS: 400s = word nerd alert.) Of course that’s how you train for a scrabble-off. And the best of the triple word scorers will flock with their tiles, and brains stuffed with Q words to the Daylesford Bowling Club (8 Camp Street) Saturday, August 17, to battle it out at the Scrabble Fest. This is a breathtaking spectator sport. Just like Le Tour de France really, and if, like le Tour, you were inspired and bought a bike, prepare to be just as inspired to grab a free Scrabble board and get all sweaty and wordy. Action starts at 10am. Free entry. wordsinwinter.com

It’s irrelevant,

CONSIDERING she’s ‘just’ the old local watering hole, The Old Hepburn Hotel gets some pretty tippety top live acts in. This month is no exception, with the August line up looking superduper. But one act does seem to stand out from the others. Dog Trumpet. We at lost reaaaally got our hopes up hoping to see a Shih-Tzu on a podium trumpeting it up Louis Armstrong style… but instead, it’s Peter O’Doherty and Reg Mombassa (ex-Mental as Anything) up on stage, being slightly less fluffy and flea-bitten, and much, much more musically amazing. The brothers have been playing as Dog Trumpet for over 20 years, (yes, yes, it has been that long since the Mentals, get over it,) and in that time they’ve released six albums, including the latest: Medicated Spirits, from which they will play plenty o’ tunes at the Old Hep, (236 Main Rd) Sunday, August 18, from 3pm. Tickets are $20 at trybooking/DDVC. For more info call the pub 5348 2207. 25

family day out

WORDS IN Winter’s much loved Hepburn Libraries Family Day is back and it is sooo jam packed full of booky good times that they nearly had to hold the event over two days to fit it all in. Instead they’re shoehorning the goodness into one mighty big day in, to create a bookishly brilliant word wonderland for kids. This mini festival will be held Sunday, August 18, at Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street), from 10am ‘til 4pm. The day’s events include: performances, story telling, short films, drama, craft, circus workshops, mime, music, writing workshops, visiting authors and more. BYO lunch and stay all day, or grab something to boost your story-time stamina at the Family Day Café. There are specific events held for pre-school aged kids, lower primary, upper primary, parents, and fun stuff for all ages. Take a peek behind the mystery door and meet Phil Kettle, author of the TooCool series of books. Take a Superhero and comic book writing workshop with Garry Fay, play word games on the big rug, and get sticky and creative at the craft tables. And if it all just gets too much, of course you can chill out and take in some good vibes and great stories at the story corner (we all need a break every now and then at a festival kids… it happens to the best of us.) After lunch take a circus tumbling workshop (don’t eat too much for lunch kids), learn how to write songs with Geoffrey Williams, or try out your mime skills at the mime workshops. And of course there will be friends, fun and more stories than you can poke a stick at (although we’re sure you can try at the Poking-a-Stick-at-it-Workshop.) (Actually we just made that one up. But you could probably mime the stick poking at the mime workshop, sure no one would mind.) Entry for this momentous day is $5 for kids. (You can bring your grown ups for free kids – no wasted pocket money there.) For the full timetable of the Hepburn Libraries Family Day events and workshops go to wordsinwinter.com. The Earl of Glenlyon for one night only

THE GLENLYON General Store hosts live music every Friday night. On Friday, August 23, Earl Leonard takes to the stage to play, well… whatever he feels like on the night. Earl is a busy boy. He plays the spectrum of musical genres from gig to gig, dependant on which stage he’s on. From dark stormy blues, to heavy rock n roll, sometimes happy kids’ tunes, sometimes floating world-tinged melodies, and other times his warm powerful voice sings tunes about travelling and making, and re-making decisions. It sounds like Earl has many decisions to make on a regular basis. On the 23rd he’ll be singing his story telling tunes, unless he makes a decision otherwise. As you can probably guess Earl’s musical influences are all over the shop (in a good way) but most folk can hear tinges of Cat Stevens and Tom Waits. Hit the General Store (63 Barkly St) from 6pm, and see which Earl shows up on the night. Free entry. More info: 5348 7922.

An evening of fine wine

and delicious decadence

HENTLEY Farm is a boutique winery set in the foothills of the Barossa. This wee mag doesn’t travel that far, but it does venture to Woodend: home of the Woodend Wine Store, (42e Anslow St). The passionate wine lovers at the wine store just happen to lurve the elegant hand crafted wines created by Hentley. In fact, they love ‘em so much that they’re going to share the best vintages and fave blends with us at a very special mid-winter wine dinner. (To be held at Bentinck (8 Carlisle St, Woodend) Friday, August 23, from 7pm.) The Wine Dinner will showcase nine Hentley Farm wines, including the award winning ‘Clos Otto’ Shiraz – ooh la la! The wines will be matched to a sumptuous five course dinner by Bentinck chef Jim Connolly. Winemaker Andrew Quin will be there to chat to you about what makes these wines so special. Cost $150 pp. For more info and bookings (essential) call Woodend Wine Store 5427 2228.

A green curtain rises

lost the guide to where to find it

on a play with glowing reviews WE’RE ALL a bit obsessed with the sun around here this time of year. Our incandescent ball of burning gasses causes much ado in deep winter. Random acts of extreme squinting and much kerfuffle abounds… the shouting of “BLUE SKY BLUE SKY!!” and “AAARGH WHERE ARE MY SUNGLASSES!?” are the most commonly heard phrases should our personal star show its face this side of November. Don’t be mistaken, we are really quite thrilled about the presence of our celestial being. Particularly if it gets fired up… (more so than usual). Wild solar storms and geomagnetic sciencey stuff occurs waaay up high, which, in turn, produces rather rad green auroras at the polar regions… When the conditions are right the Aurora Australis can be seen in Tassie… and if the sun is particularly grumpy we can see the aurora from here. (True story.) Catherine Ryan has written an award winning play inspired by the aurora and Australian scientists Pene Greet and Gina Price. The play: ‘Aurora Calling – the Result of a Joint Observation’ cycles a year in the lives of Trisha and Jackie, physicists studying the auroras in the Arctic and Antarctic. The play entwines myth and science, and explores the themes of personal and professional pressures, humanity, technology, distance and intimacy, love and loss. The play was adapted into a radio play for an ABC Radio National drama, winning an AWGIE award in the process. Brave the winter night sky (which will hopefully be tinged a luminous green for the occasion… you never know…) and see Aurora Calling at Lot 19, (19 Langslow Street, Castlemaine – off a little lane called McShannags Lane) Opening night is Friday, August 23, at 8:30pm, with performances held Saturday, August 24 and Sunday, August 25, and the following Friday to Sunday (August 30, 31, and Sept 1), nightly at 8pm. Tickets are $20, conc. $17. From Shoe Connection (79 Mostyn Street, 5472 1251) or Trybooking.com (search Aurora Calling). More info search Aurora Calling on Facebook.

Trains and Treasures

lost the guide to where to find it

All aboard the market express IN WINTER it takes dedication, thermal underwear and 45 cups of hot coffee to be a stall holder at the weekly outdoor Daylesford Sunday Market. This market is a Daylesford institution, and has been running for eons. The winter crowd is a committed bunch. Rugged up in woollens and doona suits (and that’s just their dogs) they meander the stalls for treasures and bargains. Big and little train lovers flock to this market, as it’s held at Daylesford Railway Station (18 Raglan Parade/Midland Hwy). The mighty team of volunteers at Spa Country Railway operate vintage tourist trains through the bush from the market. These volunteers work tirelessly in sun, rain, hail and snow (yes snow… but mostly rain,) to keep the tracks tippety-top for the Sunday rides. The trip is a short journey to Musk station (and very soon to Bullarto). In 2009 bushfires destroyed the line between Musk and Bullarto, and in the four years since, the team of weekend heroes at SCR have been fixing the track, and it’s nearly ready… (see you soon Bullarto!) Your train fee helps pay for the upkeep and restoration of the trains and train line – it’s more fun than V/Line and not as smelly as the Metro, what more could you want really? – Get on board! The market is a great place to stock up on some local treats before you head home. Des O’Toole honey, fresh local fruit and vege, eggs, jams, pickles, and still-warm loaves of organic sourdough bread. Hot food is served throughout the day, gourmet sausages, organic dishes, Turkish borek, and other deliciousness is available if you’ve marketed yourself up an appetite. On foggy days grab a steaming cup of spiced mulled wine, and carry it in gloved hands as you wander the aisles. Such a treat. Look out for fragrant locally made soaps and cosy knitted goods, vintage homewares and clothing, and industria. With different stall holders selling goods each week it’s always worth a browse. The market is held each Sunday from 8am ‘til 3pm, in all weather. For more info on the railway or market go to dscr.com.au

Nothing better

than some winter blues IF THE WICKED Queen ever asked her rather chatty mirror “Mirror Mirror on the wall… who’s the rootsiest one of all?” That mirror would’ve most certainly replied “well I’m afraid to tell you toots… The rootsiest band in all the land is Black & Blue.” And with that, the Queen would’ve squeezed into her best jeans, pulled on her boots, straightened up the tiara and headed to The Savoia Hotel for a great night of bluesy rock with her BFFs. The Savoia (69 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) serves up live music every Saturday night, and Saturday, August 24, Melbourne’s Black & Blue take to the Sav stage to rock out a few originals, and their rootsy takes on a few covers. Black & Blue have played at functions, fundraisers and festivals, all over Australia. See them at the Sav on the 24th from 9pm.

Together at last

ONE of the great things about the region is our proximity to state and regional parks. The bush is on our doorstep and there are loads of us who get out there and amongst it. The Castlemaine Rocky Riders mountain bike club host regular rides throughout the region; team events, social rides, state level MTBA events, and races with the emphasis always on the fun stuff. The Rocky Riders ride through winter too, with a series of fun winter warmers. Sunday, August 25, they’re holding a poker race. Ride the trail, each lap you will be given a playing card, the team with the best poker hand at the end wins. Love it! Rego is at 3:15pm, ride starts at 3:30. They depart from White Hills Reserve, Campbells Creek, (Rowley Park Drive). The ride will be followed with dinner at Arribar (the winning riders get a free taco. Brilliant.) Entry is free. (You must hold a MTBA social or race license - $5 for a day permit) For more info go to rockyriders.com

Anti-new-crap

lost the guide to where to find it

We heart Antiques “I LOVE cheap imported homewares… they look sooo great” said no one ever. Let’s face it people. Antiques are good. Good for your design sensitive eyes to rest upon, good for the environment, and good for the soul. They have history and a life lived long before you invited them into your home. They have warmth, and depth, and spirit and spunk and personality. Antiques are special. Old stuff is great. And the wonder of old stuff is that there’s plenty of it out there, for everyone… no matter what your taste in ‘stuff’ is. There are trash and treasure stalls, second hand stores, retro outlets, markets and eBay all loaded with pieces of great beauty and functionality. If you want items of mass consumption head to the shops. If you want a piece of great character and style, head to the nearest antique fair… oh and lookie here: there’s one on this month! The 17th Annual Kyneton Antique Fair will be held on Friday, August 30, Saturday, August 31, and September 1 at the Kyneton Town Hall. This Antique Fair is well regarded by buyers and sellers alike, so much so that they have expanded this year to take on even more dealers and sellers of the collectable and well loved. (If you’ve been before, make sure you take the lift to the upstairs level to explore even more items this year). Expect to find militaria, coins, vintage clothing, dolls, jewellery, some smaller items of furniture, artwork, etchings, fine china, glass and silverware, lamps, clocks, and oodles of swoonworthy loveliness. This award-winning event is the major fundraiser for the Kyneton Museum. So there is a small entry fee ($7 for adults kids are free). The Kyneton Town Hall is in Mollison Street. If you find yourself wandering for hours, and need sustenance to make it through to the other side of the antiquefest, light lunches and snacks will be available (provided by the Rotary Club of Kyneton). Opening hours are: Friday: 5pm-8pm, Saturday: 10am-5pm and Sunday 10am-4pm. For more info go to visitmacedonranges.com or call Fran Wigley 0411 208 448.

Spring and Fall

lost the guide to where to find it

in the middle of winter

CREATIVE people shirk the idea that all the good things have already been done… They get snarky at the hint that all the new ideas have been thought of. Stoopid argument really. The new ideas just haven’t been thought of yet, you smallbrained-uncreative-dodos. Just ask people like Paul Kelly. Now here’s a bloke who has been writing amazing lyrics and performing consistently for decades. Inspiration is infinite. There will always be room for new words, new thoughts, new lyrics and new tunes. Proof is in the (new-albumshaped) pudding called Spring and Fall. A self described ‘song cycle’ – Spring and Fall maps the relationship of a couple from start to finish. Paul Kelly will perform his new release in its entirety – with some old faves from his tardis-like back catalogue at Theatre Royal Castlemaine, (30 Hargraves Street) Tuesday, August 27, at 8pm. Tickets are $66. For more info and bookings call 5472 1196.
