New tunes
for an old dame
THE Daylesford Hotel had a significant facelift last year. And while we’re all for aging gracefully, the Daylesford Hotel’s cosmetic surgeons nipped and tucked the iconic old dame so masterfully that she doesn’t look a day over 100. Who doesn’t love the Daylesford Hotel?? And, this month the old pub is launching a spesh new music program which everyone is pretty excited about too! Ease into your weekend each Friday in the Front Bar with a bit of jazz and blues from 6:30pm ‘til 9:30pm. (Free entry.) Saturday nights the tunes are on in the Lounge Bar from 8:30pm ‘til 11:30pm. The vibe will be a bit cool, with DJs spinning some fab old vinyl, and there’ll be great live acts as well, bringing sultry blues, sophisticated swing-jazz and a splash of cabaret to town. (Entry $10, first drink free.) This month, acts to play the Front Bar on Friday evenings include: Moodswing (August 1,) Paris Payne (August 8,) Meryl Leppard (August 15,) Annie and Bern (August 22,) and Norm Gray Duo (August 29.) Saturdays in August the Lounge Bar introduces: DJ Casio (August 2,) Meg Corson and her CBop pals feat. Myles White (August 9, more info page 14) Sarge and Moose Trio (August 16), Wesley Green and the 45s (August 23), and the Tin Roof Trio (August 30.) Daylesford Hotel is at 2 Burke Square. Did somebody say… dress ups??
IN THIS town, it’s not just the kids who have their own dress up boxes. Many of the grown-ups around here quite enjoy indulging in a little fancy dress too. (Ok, so we’re mad about it.) If there’s a dress up opportunity, we’re busting out the Janome, the fabric, the sequins and cardboard and paper maché and we go to town. The 2014 Words In Winter Book Ball is back. Saturday, August 2, at the Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street) you are invited to dress up as your favourite book character, for a night of fun, dancing and hilarities. (Yay!) The Book Ball will be held from 7:30pm till midnight. There’ll be fab live music and prizes for best fancy dress and best table decoration. Gather your besties, book a table of ten, and get started on your costume. BYO supper and drinks. Tickets $22, from Paradise Books, Hepburn General Store, The Bookbarn, or trybooking.com.au/FFEI More info at wordsinwinter.com or call Anne 0411 866 643. 4

One weekend…
thousands of books
HAVING the ability to read is what separates us from the other animals. That, and our nifty opposing thumbs. Oh, and our ability to make pizza. Ok, sure, there’s probably a couple of other things as well… But learning to read is one of the trickiest things your brain has to do. The kids at Daylesford Primary School are training like ninjas to improve their reading skills, and they’re asking everyone to give them a hand. Saturday, August 2, and Sunday, August 3, the school will host its annual Book Fair. All proceeds from the fair go to the school’s literacy program. The Book Fair is a major book sale with thousands of books to trawl through. Categories include fiction, cooking, reference, kids, history, special interest and best sellers, as well as a few treasures and rare finds in there as well… Boxes and boxes of awesome books have been donated to the school by our awesome community and generous publishing houses. At 9am on Saturday, the doors of the Daylesford Primary School gymnasium will be thrown open like Myer on Boxing Day and the great Book Fair will be a free-for-all as frenzied book lovers rummage for a page turner bargain or five. More info call 5348 2480 during school hours or like facebook. com/DaylesfordPrimarySchoolBookFair.
Warm harmonies and hot soup
YOU know how in high summer you start to feel a little meh about salad, and a little nostalgic for a big bowl of soul warming soup..? Well we are deeeeeep into soup weather now folks. Like… up to our necks deep. Thankfully soup is awesome and we love it… and thankfully winter is almost over, (also awesome). Polly Christie of the Pollyphonics Choir embraces winter with soup and singing and leads a monthly Soup n’ Sing Session in Woodend. The next Soup n’ Sing will be held Sunday, August 3, 6pm – 8:30pm at Norma Richardson Hall, 15 Buckland St, Woodend. You don’t need musical experience, just head along and warm up the vocal chords, and the soup will warm up everything else. This feelgood event takes in some old and new tunes (from Bob Dylan to The Church to a bit of world music). Cost: adult $15, $12 conc, $5 kids. (Bookings required) call 5423 2848 or 0417 059 434. More info: like woodendsoupnsing on Facebook.
Claret and coke poetry in motion
CAST your mind back to a cooler time (no, not that day when it snowed) a more hip time, an era when poets and songwriters mingled in dark bars, when candles flickered in green wine bottles, creative folk connected and drank claret and coke out of mugs. (*cough* did that really happen?) Thursday, August 7, you are invited to mix it with the creative ones at The Perfect Drop (5 Howe Street, Daylesford). Kick back on the lounges and enjoy something mighty fine to eat (claret and coke not compulsory) whilst ten of Daylesford’s finest songwriters and poets keep you well entertained on a magical evening of wonderful words. The Songwriters and Poets Go Wild event is part of Words in Winter and entry is free. For more great fun literary events held this month go to wordsinwinter.com. For more details about this event call The Perfect Drop 5348 1100 or like Perfect Drop Wine & Food Lounge on Facebook. 8

Every day I’m truffling…
YOU have to wonder about the person who discovered the first truffle. What were they looking for in the first place? And what on Earth possessed this person to taste this pungent, dirty, brown, lump of subterranean fungus? What were they thinking?! Luckily, our intrepid dirty lump taster was onto a winner. And truffles are regarded the world around as being one of the most precious delicacies in a chef’s pantry. The clever dirt we have in this neck of the woods is good for growing lots of stuff… including the mysterious lumps of funky black gold, and each truffle season, truffle farms open their gates for truffle tours and tastings. Sunday, August 3, local growers Black Cat Truffles, are hosting a super special ‘Truffles Made Easy’ one day cooking class at their trufferie at Wattle Flat. Local chef Peter Ford will host the cooking class, and demonstrate how to prepare simple and delicious truffle dishes and how to get the most out of your truffle. Of course there will be samples and tastings of the food prepared. You can also try local truffle oil and a most divine truffled D’Affinois Brie. Ooh la la. Speak to the truffle growers and watch their amazing truffle dogs in action (oh yes, clever connoisseur sniffer dogs do all the dirty work and sniff out the truffles for the growers – sure beats being a sniffer dog at the airport). The event runs from 10:30am until 2:30pm (approx.) Morning tea will be provided, and truffles will be available to purchase on the day. The Truffles Made Easy event at Black Cat Truffles is part of a series of tasty truffle events by Truffle Melbourne. Tickets are $160. Numbers are limited and bookings are essential. For more information and bookings go to trufflemelbourne. com/truffle-hunts or call 0403 394 144. For more information on Black Cat Truffles visit their website: blackcattruffles.com.au or phone 5334 5563. 10

Foodie (n) (slang)
a connoisseur of fine food
THE word ‘foodie’ is bandied around for anything remotely… um… food-ie. It really is quite an annoying little word, but boy do we find it useful around here. It also happens to be a collective noun. We believe the people of this region are all Foodies. We seem to have evolved a fine palate, we appreciate the delicious, and what’s more… expect the delicious. Visitors to our humble ‘hood have also developed an expectation that their tastebuds will be pleased with their visit to our Foodie Wonderland. The Argus Dining Room at Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel (Main Road, Hepburn Springs) is taking intrepid tastebuds and their owners on a culinary adventure: The Argus Truffle Experience. Saturday, August 9, join The Argus Dining Room’s executive chef (David Willcocks) and restaurant manager Tristan Fraser for a deliciously different day out. You’ll begin with morning tea on arrival at Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel. From Peppers you will be whisked away to Georgie Patterson’s Trufferie to learn everything truffle… (how very foodie of you). Watch Georgie’s truffle dogs in action, sniffing out the truffles for harvest. Enjoy a rustic lunch at the trufferie with local wines, and your chance to buy truffles direct from the farm. After your day on the farm relax back at Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel, meet sommelier Jeremy Shiell for a cheeky Prosecco before being seated for the eight (yes, eight) course dinner. Dinner will be served with matching Italian wines in The Argus’ private dining room. Yeah, wow. This Gourmet Food Trail event commences at 10:30am. Dinner is from 6pm ‘til late. Cost $410pp. Numbers are strictly limited at 14. To book a place on this most exclusive foodie adventure call the team at Peppers: 5348 2202. For more information go to theargusdiningroom.com.au.

Daylesford winter FTW
BOY we nail that whole ‘winter’ thing around here, don’t we huh? The foggy days, open fires, glass-of-red cosy thing. We are a picture postcard of winter snug-ness. Add to our winter package deal an evening of jazz and seriously… we are out of control winter awesomeness. The One and Only Meg Corson and her CBop pals featuring Myles White are heading to the Daylesford Hotel Lounge Bar, Saturday, August 9. This combo of musical awesome will blow you away. One of the finest singers to grace our local music scene, Meg Corson, is teaming up with super talented jazz guitarist Myles White and Civil Bop (double bass, drums and sax) for an evening of crazy good jazz to warm your soul here in the darkest depths of winter. Add to that something outstandingly great from Daylesford Hotel’s wine list and you’re set for a pretty much perfect winter’s night. Entry is $10. Daylesford Hotel is at 2 Burke Square. More info: 5348 2335.

A Blampied watering hole back on the map
THE Swiss Mountain Hotel is neither Swiss, nor on a mountain. It’s actually half way between Daylesford and Creswick at Blampied. Many locals who do the Ballarat commute have been watching with interest over the past few weeks/months/years to see what would happen to this classic country pub. So we were all pretty excited when the Frangos family (of Frangos & Frangos fame) got their hands on it. We knew the transformation would be pretty special. The pub has been sensitively transformed with respect to its heritage, but with a rustic Frangos nod. The good honest pub food in the restaurant is delish, there’s a pool table and telly for the footy, local potato farmers are invited to leave their boots on, and of course there’s a great local wine list to enjoy around the huge roaring fire. The Swiss Mountain Hotel is at 3454 Midland Hwy. Open daily (details pg 39) Reservations advised 5345 7006 swissmountainhotel.com.au.
Wise and wild
where words and music meet
WE HAVE some wonderfully wise and wildly creative folk among us here in the Central Highlands. Helen Davey and Linnet Hunter are teaming up for Words in Winter for a special one off show: Wise and Wild at The Grande Hotel (1 Church Avenue, Hepburn Springs) Sunday, August 10, (3:30pm-4:30pm). Helen is a musician and artist and responds to other artists’ work through her music. Her musical responses are evocative and honest, truly reflecting her emotional experience. Helen has produced a number of these ‘sound paintings’ with various artists. The performance promises to be uplifting, ephemeral, earthy and moving and she will create a soundscape to match Linnet Hunter’s spoken word pieces. Audience interaction is assured. Tickets are $10 ($8 conc). For bookings and more information call The Grande: 5348 1978, or go to wordsinwinter.com.

Love Your Sister love your cinema
SAMUEL Johnson is one of the most likable blokes in Australia. He’s a much loved and admired local lad who is well known around the country for the many roles he has played on our big and small screens. Most recently, Sam’s star has been burning bright pink; in the past 12 months Sam has undertaken an outstandingly-awesome, heart-touching and slightly bonkers campaign to raise funds for breast cancer research. Sam’s sister Connie is living with terminal breast cancer and challenged Sam to DO SOMETHING about it. Regular human beings would’ve held a raffle or a piedrive, but Sam chose to ride his unicycle around Australia to raise awareness about early detection, and to raise a bucketload of money along the way. Mission accomplished! The Love Your Sister campaign has so far raised $1.75m and is an amazing success story of love and hope… and boobs. Along the way Sam rode into Daylesford and Hepburn Springs for a fantastic night at The Savoia Hotel where many joined him for a beer and a very fun, very pink night at the pub. That awesome day and Sam’s entire lap around the country was filmed, and the team produced a doco of Sam and Connie’s journey. The Love Your Sister Documentary was recently screened on the telly. The Daylesford Cinema at The Rex (47-53 Vincent Street) will be showing the doco up on the big screen Thursday, August 14, from 7pm. Sam himself will be at The Rex for a super special Q&A session after the screening, (in case you wanted to ask him any curly questions that you might’ve missed out on at The Sav on that night back in Feb!). Tickets to the Love Your Sister screening and Sam Johnson Q&A session are $25/$15 conc. All proceeds go to the Garvan Institute for Medical Research. For more info and bookings go to therex.org.au or call Linda 5348 2691. Visit FB at facebook.com/daylesfordcommunitytheatre for the latest screenings and news. Walk through
a winter wonderland
OPEN Gardens Australia is a group of passionate gardeners and garden lovers who produce a fantastic annual program of open gardens around the country. Us humble backyard gardeners are invited to explore these wonderlands to take some inspiration home for our own small plots. This time of year there’s not a whole lot happening in our gardens, so an open garden around here is pretty spesh. Stephen Ryan rarely opens his extraordinary garden in winter, but has decided to this year! Yay! Tugurium (8 Centenary Avenue, Macedon) will be open Saturday, August 16, and Sunday, August 17, 10am-4:30pm. The first part of the garden at Tugurium was planted on a site burnt out by the 1983 Ash Wednesday fires. Amazing what 30 years of hard work can do! See the textures, structure, and bare limbed deciduous plants of a winter garden and lovely winter blooms. Entry $8, (under 18 free). More info: opengarden.org.au.
Volcanoes are cool
HAVE you ever taken a lazy country drive around here? Just to admire the landscape? Have you ever noticed something a little unusual about the green hills that randomly pop up and dot the countryside? Have you noticed perhaps THAT THEY’RE ALL VOLCANOES?!?! No need for alarm… but yep. We are surrounded by volcanoes in this part of Victoria. No need to pack your bags, Wombat Hill ain’t exactly Krakatoa, but if you’ve ever wanted to know a little more about the volcanic/seismic and geological history of the region you’re in luck. As part of Words In Winter, world renowned seismologist (and Newstead local) Gary Gibson will be leading a three hour tour of our extraordinary volcanic surroundings, Sunday, August 24, from 10:30am. Meet at Newstead RTC (45 Lyon St.) for the community bus (or BYO car). Call David for more info and bus bookings (essential) 0428 310 825. Cost $10/$7.50 conc/$5 own car. BYO lunch. 24

Sunshine, happiness and flowers
SPRING is days away… This statement was also certainly true at the start of winter, but now there are less days between us and the sunshiny goodness of glorious happy spring. We are cheering for spring like it’s running in the 100 metre final at the Olympics. COME ON SPRIIIING!!! Spring means sunshine, flowers, and blue skies. *sigh* remember blue skies? Remember flowers? With the imminent arrival of flowers to your garden wouldn’t it be fab to know what to do with them? Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre is running an Introduction to Floristry course commencing Monday, August 25. This four session introduction will inspire you to create amazing arrangements from gathered flowers and foraged treasures to brighten your house and life as the sunshine returns. It’s also a great precursor to further education in floristry. Sessions run 9:30am – 12:30pm. For more info and bookings call DNC on 5348 3569.
A happier than usual Father’s Day
JUST giving you the heads up. It’s Father’s Day again soon. The first Sunday in September seems to roll around kinda quick don’t you think? Probably because ALL dads are tricky to buy for. So tricky, that it crushes our shopping spirit and burns us for months. But this year, it’s different… Harry And Me (at 57D Vincent St Daylesford) have a brilliant new corner of the store… (ok, so the corner itself isn’t new… but the stuff in the corner is). They now stock loads of great ‘guy stuff’. (Notably Scotch and Soda clothing… hello) as well as accessories, scarves, beanies, braces, wallets, bags, fragrance, and other ace man stuff that you soooo want the hunky awesome father of your children (or your supercool dad) to have. Bear in mind the other three corners of the store are filled with stuff you’ll fall in love with, so it’s totally worth dropping in. More info like facebook.com/harryandmedaylesford or follow their gorgeousness on Instagram. 28

Weeds
in winter
WHY should snails and slugs have all the fun? There’s a bounty of highly nutritious tasty food in your backyard that you don’t even know about! That’s right… we’re talking about WEEDS. There’s loads of green stuff you can pick out there that’d be delish tossed with some other salad greens and dressed with a little balsamic, or thrown into your green breakfast smoothie (for extra green-ness). Find out which common weeds are the tastiest, what they’re called and where you can find them at the Edible Weed Workshop Saturday, August 30, at Clunes RSL Hall (30 Fraser Street). From 2pm your Weedmaster Phil Tulk will display the wide variety of weeds that can be found around our homes, on roadsides and vacant land. Sample a few seasonal weedy delights and we guarantee you wont be able to resist a tasty weed hunt when you get home. More information at wordsinwinter.com/event/clunes. Gold coin entry.
A day
on the tiles
THE saying ‘A night on the tiles’ is pretty crap. Most of us stand on tiles in our kitchens and bathrooms, and it really ain’t that fun. A whole night standing on tiles sounds like our idea of snoresville. However, for the crafty among us, a day on the tiles has a whole different connotation. Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre is offering a one day mosaic workshop, to introduce beginners to the art of mosaic. If you dream of recreating Melbourne’s Block Arcade floor up your hallway, this might just be the inspiration you need. Learn the process, the techniques and leave ready to tackle your own mosaic projects at home. The workshop will be held at Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre (13 Camp Street) on Sunday, August 31, 10am ‘til 5pm. Cost $60 (includes materials) For more information and bookings call the Centre: 5348 3569, or like Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre on Facebook. 30
