Polyface Farm

waaay beyond the humble vegie patch

POLYFACE Farm in northern Virginia USA, is an amazing place. The farm uses no pesticides and feeds over 6000 families and many restaurants and food outlets within three hours of their farm. One Australian family was so inspired by the farm that they sold up and spent their life savings travelling to Polyface to document four years in the life of this amazingly progressive and productive farm. The resulting film ‘Polyfaces. A World of Many Choices’ is inspiring and joyful. As part of the Words In Winter opening night festivities: Friday, August 5, Polyfaces will be screening at Daylesford Cinema, from 8pm with an opening night Q&A prior to the film with local food heroes Tammi Jonas and Richard Cornish. Tickets are $15 and are available from the cinema box office. (Buy them early, this event will be popular!) For more info on Words In Winter go to wordsinwinter.com or go to daylesfordcinema.org.au

AHH Shakespeare. Happy 400th ol’ chap. Don’t you think young William would be stoked to know that his words are still celebrated 400 years after his birth? In fact we’re quite sure he’d say “Yeah man I’m stoked.” We are quite certain 400 years from now our ramblings in Lost won’t be quite as well recognised… but hey, you never know… Words In Winter finishes off with some of the finest words ever written. Daylesford Cinema will host an exclusive screening of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. This is the filmed production of the Royal National Theatre’s live stage production from London. We Drive Slow

for wildlife

10

WHETHER you’re visiting our neck of the woods, or if your family has lived here for generations, you’ll know that driving around here has its challenges. Sharing the road with the local wildlife is a reality that we face every time we hop into the car. Unfortunately sometimes animals are struck on the roads. The best plan is to take it easy and slow down, especially between dusk and dawn, but it is equally important to know what to do if you find an injured animal. BADGAR Wildlife Rescue is hosting a Wildlife Rescue Info Session at Creswick Neighbourhood Centre: (19 Victoria Street) Monday, August 8, 6-7:30pm. Learn what to do if you hit an animal, how to safely pick up and transport injured or orphaned wildlife, where to go and which items are handy to carry in your boot if you are travelling in the country. Bookings are essential, attendance by donation to BADGAR. For more info and bookings call 5345 2356. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

You Had Us At YOU wouldn’t think a smallgoods appreciation course would even be necessary… We certainly appreciate the full gamut of smoked and cured smallgood deliciousness already, yet, others might benefit from the knowledge a gifted smallgoods maker can offer. Saturday, August 13, the ace folk at Ida Red (at 14-16 Victoria Street, Macedon) are hosting a sausage making and smallgoods appreciation course. And it sounds like all kinds of awesome. Discover the fine art of sausage making with sausage experts Uncle’s Smallgoods. Uncle’s have been producing traditionally wood-smoked hams, bacons and sausages for over 20 years, using timehonoured techniques and the freshest local ingredients. During the workshop you will learn how to pump out sausages under the expert supervision of one of the Uncles, (the head Smallgoods maker no less). Then you’ll enjoy a Smallgoods degustation. (OMG!! Happy dance!) During the degustation sampling you’ll learn how various preparation techniques can alter the taste and texture of the final product. You’ll then be treated to a Smallgoods inspired meal that pays homage to Uncle’s eastern European roots, listen to the free range pork farmers who supplied the pork and take home your very own fresh sausage, salumi and a voucher to Uncle’s Smokehouse Delicatessen in Dandenong. Cost for this session of mouthwatering amazingness is $160pp, which includes the sausage course, coffee and tea, antipasto platters, and superb pizza with sausage and/or salumi. Enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch and finish the day at boutique contemporary accommodation at Lake Daylesford. The food theme for the weekend is Italian. Run For Fun or for Shiraz

SOME people run for fun. This is an unusual thing that humans do. The rest of the animal kingdom just runs if under threat, say, by a wild rhinoceros charging at them full tilt. Yet, some of us human-types do it for ‘pleasure’. This month, some humans will be participating in a fun run held by the Victorian Cross Country League at Kyneton Ridge Estate Winery. (Blackhill Road.) Yes folks. A fun run at a winery. Sunday, August 28, from 11am runners will race for prizes and for ‘fun’ around a 6.5km course. (Runners must be a VCCL Member to be eligible for prize money.) Other less athletic types will run at the cellar door as if chased by a wild rhino, for tastings and maybe a grazing plate. (We hear the 2010 Shiraz is worth a sprint.) Enter the 5th annual Kyneton Ridge Estate Winery Handicap on the day, cost $15. For details on race entry go to vccl.org.au. For more info on the winery (cheers) go to kynetonridge.com.au

Weaving Magic

from sheep to shawl

IN an age of fast fashion, where something parading on a Paris runway can be whipped up and in the shops an hour later, it’s good to know that the local slow cloth movement is still weaving its magic. Creswick Neighbourhood Centre is hosting a Wool Craft workshop day where participants are invited to learn the skills to prepare raw fleece into single and plyed yarn for hand knitting, crochet, weaving and felting. Slow down for a day and learn the techniques to create something beautiful and unique (that you won’t see on the High Street… like, ever). The Wool Craft workshop will be held Sunday, August 28, 9:30am-4:30pm at Creswick Neighbourhood Centre (19 Victoria Street). Cost $65 + $25 materials fee. For more information and bookings go to Creswick.org.au or call 5345 2356.
