OH HELLO SUMMER! Boy have we missed you. Summer isn’t just a season in Australia, somehow summer makes Australia even more Australia-ey. All the classic Aussie clichés really come to the fore: BBQs with mates, beach trips, backyard cricket, thongs, noses painted in zinc, and the great outdoors is just greater when it’s sunny. So summer, we hope you didn’t wear yourself out on the Northern Hemisphere, because we’ve got three big months that need your undivided attention and big ball o’ heat. Sunday, Dec 1, the Kyneton Music Festival presents an afternoon of tunes from midday ‘til 4pm (peak UV time kids, sunscreen up!) Here Comes The Sun will be held at Stockroom (98 Piper St Kyneton), with Matthew Sigley, The Steinbecks and Fraser A Gorman. Love drawing life drawing
LIFE drawing with a model is one of the most challenging works for an artist to master. It’s way easier to draw a plate of lumpy fruit than a human. If you have ever taken life drawing classes you’ll know what we mean. It’s by no means a stress though, a life drawing class is also one of the most enjoyable and relaxing ways to unwind and create at the same time. (Unless you’re the model, then it’s not relaxing… especially if it’s a long pose… ouch.) Daylesford Life Drawing is a new class held weekly at Buffalo Girls (4c Duke Street). The classes are casual, with professional life models posing for artists. BYO materials, (you are welcome to bring all mediums), remember an easel if you need it… (and bulldog clips, it’s the worst if you forget the bulldog clips.) WHAT a treat to while away a (hopefully) sunny Friday late afternoon beer-in-hand in an umbrella’d courtyard listening to live music as we ease into a weekend. Ahhh, bliss. Lucky are we to have a local venue that brings in fab live bands each and every Friday to introduce us to our weekend. The Old Glenlyon General Store (63 Barkly Street) hosts live music every Friday. (Aren’t they nice?) Friday, December 6, wonderful Melbourne band Oh Pep! take to the wee stage. It’s a folky feel with two old high school buddies Olivia and Pepita delivering beautifully penned tunes with their band. Oh Pep! have received loads of love for their songwriting (read: awards-a-plenty) and have fans in high places. And if you don’t know them you’ll become a fan too after you see them at the General. Santa Claus is coming to Trentham
ONE OF the great things about living in a small town is that there’s no need to host a Christmas street party to catch up with a few of the neighbours. You just host a whole-town Christmas Carols in the main street and everyone comes along. For 25 years the townsfolk of Trentham have gathered in December to have a bit of a neighbourly catch up, share around the shortbread and belt out a few Oh Come all Ye Faithfuls. This year Trentham’s Christmas Carols in the Park will be held Friday, December 6, at Quarry Street Reserve. The concert will feature Maria Forde, the Trentham Primary School kiddos, Katie Nowland, Vanessa Craven and the whole town singing along. The Kyneton Brass Band will be playing to keep everyone in tune. And rumour has it there’ll be a special visit from the bloke in the red suit. Summertime poolside = good times
SOMETHING truly magical happens in these parts in December. We wait nine loooong months for this particularly awesome seasonal event to occur. The locals are all pumped and ready to go, as the first weekend in December the key turns in the padlocks at THE LOCAL SWIMMING POOLS! HOORAY!! You’ve seriously gotta love an old-school, outdoor, countrytown swimming pool in the summertime. Gotta love melty icypoles from the kiosk as you sit on the grass in the sun, and you’ve got to love that bracing chill as you jump in for the first time. Eeee! (Gotta love that natural solar heating.) In the Hepburn region there are four public swimming pools, in Daylesford (Central Springs Road), Trentham (Market Street), Clunes (Ligar Street) and a toddler’s pool at Calambeen Park, Creswick. This year the pools open for the summer season on Saturday, December 7. Hooray!! (They’re open until Labour Day in March, or maybe longer if there is a heat wave like last year.) (One can dream.) Each pool has its own opening hours, so here’s a list of times to commit to memory, incase you feel the sudden urge to bikini up and hit the water… Daylesford: weekends, public, and school holidays: 10am-6pm, weekdays during school term: 12pm – 6pm. A wombat
in night vision goggles
THE Wombat State Forest is a precious part of where we live. If you stand on Wombat Hill and turn 360 degrees, you’ll notice that we are, indeed, surrounded by forest. (Take a deep breath, it’s lovely out there.) A small, but passionate group of locals care deeply for our beautiful forest. Wombat Forestcare regularly host talks and meetings at Trentham Neighbourhood Centre (High Street), to discuss what’s happening (quite literally) in our neck of the woods. Recently they have placed night vision cameras throughout the forest to monitor fauna, and they’ve captured some fantastic footage of the forests’ furry and feathered locals. Wombat Forestcare will be presenting their night vision camera project update at Trentham Neighbourhood Centre, Friday, December 6, 7pm-8:30pm. Come and see what the locals get up to after dark. THERE aren’t enough opportunities for community sing-alongs in our opinion. That’s why Christmas is just the best. It brings people together from all walks of life, with varying degrees of vocal ability to belt out a few fave Chrissy tunes whilst holding fire in their hands. This year Creswick is hosting a night of tunes, tinsel and tea-lights with the Creswick Brass Band playing up a storm at the Creswick Community Carols By Candlelight, Saturday, December 7, from 6:30pm. The band will be playing all the faves, there’ll be a choir on hand to assist with the high notes and harmonies, as well as a sausage sizzle, jumping castle, and a visit from Mr Claus himself. The Creswick Community Carols by Candlelight event will be held at Hammond Park, and all are welcome (yes, even the less tuneful among us). FOR sixty-two years the Daylesford Highland Gathering has drawn the crowds to see the best pipers, drummers and Scottish dancers in the region. And och aye, once again the Daylesford Highland Gathering will awaken our sleepy town on Saturday, December 7, to the tune of Bagpipes en masse. The Pipe Bands will gather, tasseled, sporraned and kilted up in fine full costume, to march up Vincent Street at 9:30am. The pipers then make their way to Victoria Park (off the BallanDaylesford Rd) for a day of all things Highland and Scottish. Highland Dancing Competitions commence at 9am, there will be solo drumming and piping throughout the day, (from 11:30) contests, displays, bands, food stalls and more bagpipes than you can poke a haggis at. HOSTING Christmas dinner is an opportunity for the humble home cook to show off a bit, (ok, a lot.) Hosts plan the big meal months in advance. Secretly testing everything from sauces to shortbreads on unsuspecting family members in preparation for the big event. The Christmas Cook usually has an armory of tried and tested recipes up their sleeves ready to roll out to a chorus of oohs and ahhs on the 25th. But we have word there’s a Christmas Charcuterie class happening at Piper Street Food Co (89B Piper St, Kyneton) on Saturday, December 7. And once you know the secrets to make these traditional French treats, it’ll really pop Great Aunt Flossie’s Christmas cracker. AS THIS wee mag goes to print we are sitting in the rain after a virtually non-existent spring. Apparently summer is here. Which means… it’s fire season. Now we don’t wish to alarm you, but the townships of Daylesford and Hepburn Springs have been assessed by the Country Fire Authority as having an extreme bushfire risk. This means, whether you’re a local, or a visitor to the area this summer, you’d better have a fire plan. If you live here download the Fire Ready kit from the CFA website. A fire plan can be as easy as leaving early on the day, or the night before a day of Severe / Extreme or Code Red fire danger. (This is the safest thing to do.) If you decide to stay and bushfire threat is imminent (and it is safe to do so), you can make your way to a Neighbourhood Safer Place. (A place of last resort.) Who doesn’t love a good roast?
LOOK, we know it’s a long time until March, and frankly, we don’t wish that upon any of you, as Summer is fiiiiinally here and the scent of 30+ sunscreen is frankly, intoxicating. However… gently cast your minds forward, if you will, to March to the annual ChillOut festival, the fabulous GLBTIQ festival held in Daylesford across the Labour Day long weekend. ChillOut is a long running, not-for-profit community event. In fact… ChillOut is the biggest country queer pride event in regional Australia (which makes it extra spesh and gives us that warm and fuzzy feeling in our hearts. Naww.) ChillOut proudly celebrates community, diversity, love and pride, and it also gives back to the locals - raising a lotta cash for a special community group each year. Despite the mammoth program of events, the thousands of people who flock to town, the sequins and feathers, leather and glitter in every colour of the rainbow, ChillOut is run on a shoestring, and needs to raise a few funds to make it truly sparkle every year. Dolly Diamond knows how to sparkle. ChillOut loves Dolly, and the feeling is mutual. Dolly Diamond is hosting a roasting. Her own, in fact, as a special fundraiser for ChillOut 2014. TANG SOO is a Korean martial art practiced at Bodhidharma (971 Basalt Road, Shepherds Flat, just past Hepburn). The young kiddos learning this ancient art have been training their butts off, and hope to make it to Darwin next September for the 5th National Tang Soo Tournament. Woo! The sausages will be sizzling and tins rattling on every corner of town to make this happen, but the biggest fundraiser they’re hosting is the Family Fun Day at Bodhidharma on Saturday, December 14. It’s a big family fair, with cake stalls, a jumping castle, trash and treasure stalls, horse rides, food, face painting, a silent auction, kids’ games, live music and more. Entry to the fair is $10 per family. The Family Fun Day is on from 11am ’til 3pm, …and let’s face it, it doubles nicely as a great break from the Christmas craziness. A refreshingly unique summer festival
THERE are festivals held the world around – celebrating everything from facial hair, to cheese rolling, tomato throwing to frogs. So why not, in the mineral water capital of the universe, celebrate the gigalitres of the liquid gold that bubbles up through the earth around here? The first ever Daylesford/Hepburn Springs Mineral Water Festival is being held on Saturday, December 28, and Sunday, December 29, in the beautiful grounds of The Convent Gallery (Corner of Hill and Daly Streets, Daylesford). The Mineral Water Festival will feature our most precious resource – (oh yes… so precious is our local mineral water that the early Swiss and Italian folk that settled in the region protested and rallied to save the springs, rather than mine it for gold. (Really truly). How lucky we are?! Today there are oodles of springs dotted all over the Central Highlands map, with a concentration of the tastiest ones right here. Some are minerally, some are a bit stinky, (and yes, some people like it that way) some are sweet and some taste better than the posh expensive stuff shipped from Europe. (Zero food miles baby, we like it that way…) People from all over Australia visit the region to ‘take the waters’ and for decades locals have used it in secret family recipes, to pickle and preserve foods, to make lollies, scones, beer, ciders and more. The Mineral Water Festival will feature many of these locally made mineral water infused treats and of course, the very best of the locally bottled mineral water in every colour and flavour of the rainbow. There will also be a competition held at the festival for kids and adults to present a recipe for something delicious made with mineral water, with cash prizes to be won, (get inventing kids!) and lots more fun and tasty stuff to see, taste and do. THE Big Tree in Guildford (25ks north of Daylesford) has celebrated many hundreds of new years’ eves. The Big Tree is a little shy when it comes to disclosing her actual age, but we have it on good authority that this magnificent and ancient river red gum could, in fact, be somewhere between 500 and 1000 years old. So very wow. Just down the road from The Big Tree is the Guildford Family Hotel. It is a little younger in years, (and a little shorter in stature too) being a mere 157 years young. Built in 1856 The Guilli has also seen her fair share of new years’ eves, and this year will be another cracker. Pugsley Buzzard will be playing the old pub in a show to welcome in the new year with gusto. NO PRESSURE December 31. Like, don’t freak out or anything, but you’re only, like, the MOST IMPORTANT PARTY DAY OF THE YEAR… Expectations are always high for New Year’s Eve. You hope the weather’s just right (we’re putting an order in for a warm evening, not too sweaty, not too breezy, no rain, no fire bans, no volcanic eruptions) and you hope that you can align the planets, and circles of friends to catch up with whom you want, when you want. AND you want the right scene, do you do crazy-busy-city-night? Do you do party at home? Do you do pub? Dinner? Go bush? Go dancing? FITNESS and Commitment. There they are. Two little words that equate to one BIG new year’s resolution. Now, cast your mind back… waaaaay back, to January 2013. What did you tell yourself when you woke on January 1? (Apart from “waaah my head”…) Remember the resolutions you made last year? Something fitness, something commitment, something healthy, blah? Yeah yeah whatever, it was the champagne still talking huh? (That champagne is a loudmouth). If you managed to commit to your 2013 New Year’s Resolution, seriously, yay you and high five (now shut up). If you didn’t, no dramas… there’s a brand spankin’ new year all clean and unblemished and free of hot chips and cheesecake just waiting for you. In Daylesford we have been gymnasium-ly challenged for some time. Which admittedly (combined with the weather,) makes it somewhat challenging to move it and lose it. That is, until now… Vlinder Holistic Fitness has recently opened their doors at 39 East Street, Daylesford. This studio gym is run by Samantha Redlich, and she invites/challenges you to step up and say hello (and to BYO resolution with you). The gym space is not a 24/7 Show-off-Gym-Nightmare. A Dutch Masterstroke in Kyneton
THOSE seventeenth century Dutch Masters knew a thing or two about painting. They also knew a thing or two about floral arrangement. There are many sub-genres within the Dutch Golden Age of painting: portraiture, landscapes, historical works, still life and others. (These guys were busy.) Floral works were exquisite, combining all manner of blooms in a dramatic display. Prunella Botanical Stylists (175-177 Mollison Street, Kyneton) host regular workshops, and Sunday, January 12, they are holding a Dutch Masters Floral Styling Workshop. Create your own arrangement, select props and backgrounds and compose a still life reminiscent of the era. Your work will then be photographed for you to take home. SARGE & the Moose sounds like a 1960s cartoon. Something you’d watch in the era of The Jetsons... (who, BTW were totally before their time… Skype anyone?? They totally invented that.) Sarge & the Moose are animated, yes, but only when they’re on stage. This musical trio: Sarge (Jess Sargeant) and the Moose (Ben Wilby and Steve Collins) play an eclectic mix of jazz, swing and blues. (We secretly hope that Ben and Steve dress in a Moose costume at some point in the performance, however, it could potentially make playing the double bass a little tricky.) A dirty weekend in the country
THOUSANDS visit our delightful region every weekend. They venture from the city to experience a slice of idyllic country life. Often visitors to the area wear their Sunday country best, casually elegant, layered, textured, smart with a sunny twist of fun. Ironed linens, designer shoes and hair coiffed just ‘so’ for that effortless country-chic look. They wander the cobbled streets with baskets of fresh local produce and bunches of just picked flowers, tossing their hair and laughing at the delightfulness of it all, “darling we should buy a weekender…” You know the type. Then there are those that come for the great outdoors, the ones that pack mountain bikes, hiking boots, sunscreen and personal GPS systems. And it’s these folk who also come for Dirt Fest. Dirt Fest is an annual event held at Creswick’s Novotel Forest Resort (1500 Midland Highway). This multisport festival is a massive weekend of hardcore off road action. Participants come for the mud, dirt, sweat and glory of crossing that finish line (hopefully) in one piece. (And certainly the dirtier the better. No fresh pressed linens here.) Saturday, January 18, and Sunday, January 19, Dirt Fest is set to be the biggest one yet, with the Victorian Cross-Triathlon championships and the Dirt Fest MultiSport festival to be held on the same weekend. There’s an off road triathlon (you swim in a lake, run through the bush, ride a mountain bike – get the picture?) cross county mountain bike races, the State Dirt Master Champs and heaps of events for everyone, including the kids - aged 7 and up. There are custom built mountain bike and running trails throughout the bushland at Novotel Forest Resort and of course, once you’re done, you can just kick back at the resort and scrub it all off in the calming sanctuary of the oasis-like bathroom in your luxurious hotel room… darling. THERE’S just something about old trains. People are mad about them. They’re noisy, smelly, slow, yet there’s a romance associated with them that makes us fall a little bit in love with them. Ask anyone at the Victorian Goldfields Railway. The volunteers at VGR keep the memory of the glory days of Victorian Rail alive. In particular, the line between Castlemaine and Maldon. Back in the gold days there were railway lines all over Victoria sending miners, supplies and treasure all over the state. When the boom ended, and the mining areas were deserted, the old railways were left to be reclaimed by the bush. Finally, when the Castlemaine/ Maldon line officially closed in 1976, local train lovers accepted the mammoth mission to get the old steam trains back on track for the tourists. Today the trains, tracks and stations are lovingly cared for by the passionate VGR volunteers, with great school holiday events run for families between school terms and the occasional extra special event for all. One such special event is coming up on Saturday, January 18. A steam train special will take you from Castlemaine station to Maldon for the annual Maldon Twilight Food and Wine Festival. This unique experience departs Castlemaine at 6pm, and delivers you to Maldon for a delicious night under the stars. Local chefs and creators of deliciousness will be serving dinner, and local vignerons will be filling glasses with favourite vintages, bubbles and new releases. The Maldon Twilight Food and Wine festival is a favourite event on the local calendar, and bookings are essential. The train returns to Castlemaine from Maldon Station at 11pm. Ticket prices include train fare and festival entry – food and wine is to be purchased separately from vendors on the night. First Class $60, Economy $50. DESPITE our excruciatingly long winter and severe lack of spring, you know it’s summer when the cricket’s on the telly and the dulcet tones of Richie, Bill, Mark and crew fill the lounge room with a sound more summery than cicadas. We have a special connection to cricket around here, Cricket Willow (355 Hepburn-Newstead Road Shepherd Flat) has been growing willow trees for over a century. Their willow plantation was established to produce the renowned Crockett cricket bats and Cricket Willow is now the only place in the world where visitors can follow the bat making process from tree to the pitch. (63 Barkly Street) Sunday arvo, Malmsbury’s favourite Senegambian Jali Buba Kuyateh is hitting the stage at The General to help us celebrate the myriad of wonderfully diverse cultures that combine to make our country so tops. Jali Buba was born into a famous musical family in Senegambia and has been composing music, singing and dancing since he was five. Now his style is a combo of flavours, from traditional Kora tunes, to Afro Manding, to Jazz, Blues to Salsa, Reggae and traditional Senegambian styles. Listening to Jali Buba is an awesome way to celebrate what’s great about our multicultural society. Add to the mix foods and flavours from around the globe, shared in the beer garden with friends from all over, plus a couple of local beers, and we reckon that’s what Australia day should be all about. IN DAYS of texts, tweets, status updates and email, the humble handwritten letter is a wonderfully quaint reminder of days gone by. Pressing send, post or tweet is a trillion times faster and cheaper than writing, posting and waiting for a letter to be sent, (and then returned… zzzzz…) but still, Australia Post issues many series of beautifully designed stamps each year, to be licked and stuck onto handwritten snail-mail and popped into a red post box to travel the world around. In November, a series of four stamps featuring historic train stations was issued, including near-by Maryborough’s magnificent 1891 Railway Station. Maryborough’s Queen Anne Revival style railway station building is a testament to the wealth of the region in the gold years, and is kitted out with all the trimmings befitting a wealthy town of the era: the tessellated tiled floors were crafted by the same company that produced the floors at Victoria’s Parliament House, the ticket boxes are hand carved English Oak, the timber ceiling is highly polished and the deep verandah roof features a glass skylight quite unusual for its era. The station even used to boast a formal ‘silver service’ dining room. Schmancy! Back in the day, over 1000 workers were employed at the busy station (and rail yards) at the peak of the boom. The cost to build the station was 22000 pounds, which was an enormous amount of money at the time… and it still functions as a working train station today. (Mind you, it is significantly less bustling than it used to be, with just one train - and a few busses - departing for Melbourne daily). A full fare adult ticket to Melbourne costs $19.80. Maryborough Train Station is on Station Street Maryborough (…of course it is). For more info about the Maryborough Railway Station go to: cv.vic.gov.au. Now, pick up a pen and write a letter to your bestie, (then text them and tell them it’s coming). Make sure you ask for the Maryborough Railway Station stamp at the post office.
