WHO doesn’t love a Christmas carol? (OK, we admit… we weren’t so keen on hearing them in October, but now that we’re knee deep in the silly season it’s A-OK by us!) There’s something a bit awesome about hearing Hark The Herald Angels Sing at full tilt. And something completely gorgeous about five year olds singing Away in a Manger. It tugs the heartstrings and lifts the Christmas spirit. Trentham knows how to turn on a carols night, and Friday, December 4, the town will turn out once again for the annual Carols By Candlelight evening at Quarry Street Reserve (High Street). Food will be on from 6:30pm (or BYO picnic) and the concert and carols will start from 7:30pm. This year some amazing local performers including the Trentham Primary kids will sing all your faves to really get you into the Christmas Spirit! (And watch out for a special visitor from the North Pole.) Entry is free. More info phone Bette: 5424 1127. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU
Summertime
THE country town outdoor pool in the summertime is akin to a magical oasis. If you don’t live on the coast, the smalltown pool is where it’s at for families, friends, swimmers and splashers to keep cool as the mercury rises. We are lucky here in the Hepburn Shire to have access to four outdoor pools in Daylesford, Trentham, Clunes and Creswick. Each summer as we near the annual opening date we cross the days off the calendar in anticipation of SOME SERIOUS POOL TIME. The pools of the Hepburn Shire will open Saturday, December 5, for the summer season. (Yaaaay!!!) Stuff the beachtowel, sunscreen and a few loose coins into a bag and hit the pool! Daylesford Pool (Central Springs Road – ph: 5348 3255) will be open weekends, public holidays and school holidays 10am – 6pm. And weekdays during school term 12pm – 6pm. Och Aye…
THEY don’t call this place the Central Highlands for nothin’… Saturday, December 5, it’s time to ‘don the kilt and tartan for the 64th annual Daylesford Highland Gathering. Woohoo!! A full day of Scottish dancing, piping and drumming kicks off at Victoria Park from 8am (gates open at 7:30am – they’re early risers those Scots) with the much-loved street parade commencing at 9:30am. This is where the bands gather to parade their classic bag piping and drumming tunes through Vincent Street and the main shopping precinct of Daylesford. Bagpipes early on a Saturday… there’s no need to set your alarm to remember folks… you’ll hear it. (But you should arrive early to get a good possie, this event always draws a crowd!) Up at Victoria Park the day is a blur of tartan, quick footed dancers, and loads of Scottish food and stalls. You could even learn a little about your Scottish heritage at the Clans tents. The redevelopment of Vic Park will not impact the day, instead the all the new marquees will create more of a village feel, just close your eyes (really tight) and pretend you’re in Edinburgh. The official ceremony at Vic Park will be held from 1pm. The day concludes with the grand finale at 4:30pm, when the bands combine to form a massed pipe band. The volume of noise from the massed bands is thunderous and truly moving. It promises to give you goosebumps and possibly even a tear or two. (It gave us a shiver just watching it on YouTube… it’ll be magic in person). It’s a moving way to end such a brilliant day out. Entry to the gathering is $12 for adults, $8 conc. children $4, under 5s and the Street Parade free. Fantastical Trentham

LLAEL McDonald is an artist who - up until a year ago resided in Melbourne’s inner west. Her surrounds have always heavily influenced her work, so when she made the move to Trentham she discovered her work began to naturally evolve to include the lush greens and innate beauty of the region. Llael has just finished a body of work entitled Sideshow. Sideshow plays homage to Trentham, and includes recognisable landscapes with a fantastical element. You’re invited to the launch of her new exhibition at Catherine Abel Gallery (17 Market St. Trentham) Saturday, December 5, 1pm-4pm. Come along for drinks and nibbles, meet Llael, and snap up a piece of local fine art. The exhibition will be open on Saturdays and Sundays throughout December: 11pm – 4pm. Pudding!
12
THE Christmas Pudding is SUCH an important part of a traditional Christmas spread. Unfortunately, so often the pud is eaten after the inevitable feast – so the enjoyment of the pudding is sometimes diluted by the post-spreadfullness. This year Lake House has created a very small batch of rich fruit and nut Christmas puddings, hand made in their kitchen (you can bet they’re amazing) and you can order them online. (Yay! Pudding joy!) And… we propose - for ultimate enjoyment of the amazing pudding - that you eat it on Christmas Eve… (Ahh! How very dare we break tradition!!) Imagine sharing one with your nearest and dearest on the night before Christmas - carols on, tree twinkling, what a treat! The puddings are wrapped in a hand screenprinted Russian linen tea towel and make a fab gift. Only 150 puddings are available. Cost $49.50 (serves 4-6). I like the cut of your Grzyb
IT TAKES courage, passion, vision and love to create a fashion label, and Daylesford’s Jodi Grzyb has all that in spades. Her new label Grzyb has a zero waste ethos and is created using textile industry waste. (It’s more gorgeous than it sounds.) Jodi hunts for ends of rolls of high-end designer fabrics, much of it from Europe and Japan (what amazing treasure she must find in her search!) and we are the beneficiaries, as she then turns these heavenly natural fibres (wools, cottons, and linens) into incredibly wearable garments. Her style is simple and classic luxe, in a mostly monochromatic, muted palette. Her items are comfortably oversized and elegantly chic. Her signature items were born from the days when Jodi carried her babies in a vintage sarong. Once they had outgrown the sarong she fashioned it into a box-style dress, and people would stop her on the street to find out where the dress was from. Since then Jodi has created her own clothes, and she now shares them with everyone. (Lucky us!) Sunday, December 20, is the grand opening of her new boutique at 31 Vincent St. Daylesford. (This is massively exciting for those of us who have admired Jodi’s style from afar!) Jodi will stock her own label and collaborations with local artists, homewares, jewellery, scarves, cushions, throws, Hunter boots and other wearable art. All are welcome to the launch from 2pm-4pm. The boutique will then be open every day, 10am-5pm. More info at grzyb.com.au.

16
NEW Year’s Eve in Central Victoria is about as far removed from the glitz and shenanigans of the big cities as you can possibly be. There’s no dropping of a giant crystal ball. There’s no 30 minute firework spectacular over a harbour swarming with a flotilla of million dollar yachts, and Richard Wilkins won’t be hosting anything with the latest pop starlet on live telly from here. (That’s for sure.) Yet, the clock will still strike midnight in our sleepy little town and 2016 will roll on in style. New Year’s Eve at Mercato (32 Raglan Street, Daylesford) promises to be a gorgeous evening with The Elizabeth Stewart Jazz Trio playing a mix of jazz standards and classics with Myles White on jazz guitar and Bruce Millar on double bass. Mercato will serve up a stunning four course dinner, and the entertainment will roll on from 9pm ‘til the newness of 2016! Tickets $150pp. Bookings essential. THE region is home to a huge collective of talented ceramic artists. Many of them form Clayspace – the Daylesford Region Ceramics Co-op. Clayspace host classes for young and old out of their East Street (Daylesford) workshop/ studio, and are so generous with their knowledge and time for anyone interested in creating something beautiful out of a luscious lump of squishy clay. The artists produce an incredible amount (and variety) of work. Their twist on this ancient art is contemporary and creative. And guess what… they’re opening the studio shop each Sunday in December in the lead up to Christmas. Oh yes… Imagine giving a unique piece of hand made ceramic art for Christmas… What an awesome pressie! (You can’t find a one off piece by an amazing local artisan at Kmart! – No-sir-ee!) At the little Clayspace studio store you’ll find vessels of all shapes and sizes, pots and cups, vases, teapots, oil burners, plates and bowls and lovingly made bits and bobs made out of all types of clay, embellished with all manner of glazes and finishes. There are seven artists selling their wares out of the Clayspace Studio Shop in December, each with their own distinctive style and take on ceramic art. Clayspace is an amazing group of artists. To find out more about them (or to become a member of the co-op yourself… go on… - imagine – you could make your own gifts next year! Yes!) go to: facebook.com/ ClayspaceDaylesfordRegionCeramicsCooperative or give them a buzz: 0409 635 809. The open studio and ceramics sale is open every Sunday 10am – 2pm prior to Christmas in East Street (opposite the end of Stanbridge Street - in that group of studios tucked in next to the David Bromley Gallery Space). DECEMBER 31 is so fancy it gets it’s own party. Everyone celebrates it and loves New Year’s Eve. But spare a moment for the other 364 eves. They’re not so loved. No one’s inviting friends over and drinking champagne and sending off fireworks on those other days. Spare a thought for July 8. Nothing ever happens on July 8. Poor July 8. (Sorry July 8, but you’re a little bit boring.) Let’s return our focus to the best Eve of all… NEW YEAR’S EVE! In Daylesford the celebrations are family inclusive and loads of fun, with the traditional New Year’s Eve parade planned once again. From 6pm ‘til 8pm the New Year’s Eve Carnival will take place on Vincent Street with a wood chop, food, buskers and entertainment until parade time at 8pm. The New Year’s Eve parade rolls along between the roundabouts on Vincent Street, and there are floats and kids on their bikes and lots of left over Christmas tinsel and a fun party vibe. This year everyone is invited to decorate a float and join in the fun! There are eight categories to enter including the ultimate BEST FLOAT category. The winner will take home the New Year’s Eve memorial Cup! What an honour. Other categories include Most Unique entry, People’s choice, Best Decorated Bike, Best Costumes and more. Anne Stewart is organising the New Year’s Eve Carnival and Parade and would love a hand with volunteers and helpers on the night (it’s nothing too taxing, just a lot of fun helping out this awesome community event). If you can lend a hand give her a buzz 0408 550 945 or email anne@anneestewart.com.au If you wish to enter your own float - grab an application from the Visitor Information Centre on Vincent Street and start creating your amazing NYE creation! Driven floats, walking floats, costumes and kooky craziness is all encouraged too! The more the merrier! Stock up on sticky tape and crepe paper and get creative! Happy new year fun lovers!! We’ll see you on Vincent Street!

Glenlyon Mixed Sports Day
lost the guide to where to find it
The Tradition Lives On
28
LET’S face it… some traditions can be a bit ridiculous… (looking at you Cheese Rolling in Gloucestershire) and some can be completely wonderful… The Glenlyon Mixed Sports Day is one of them. Back in the days of old, many towns had an annual gathering, a big day out for the whole community to get together and have a bit of fun. The Glenlyon Mixed Sports Day has been running since 1857. It is one of the last remaining old fashioned country sports days and it is highlighted on local calendars everywhere as an event not to be missed! The Glenlyon Mixed Sports day is held on New Year’s Day at the Glenlyon Reserve in the shade of the old oak trees (almost as ancient as the sports day itself). The day is held as a fundraiser for local groups – predominantly for the Daylesford and District Hospital. Last year the day raised $18,400. Not bad for a dot on the map. The program of events is dominated by the wood chop. This fiercely contested event draws competitors from all over Australia - the used blocks are then auctioned off for firewood. Another hotly contested event is the World Bull Boar Eating Championships, (arrive hungry if you wish to compete!) and the Mineral Water Drinking Competition (contestants drink a litre of mineral water in the fastest time to win – GULP!). Separate men’s and women’s events are held for these events with prize money and trophies up for grabs. There are cash prizes for the classic ladies Gumboot Throw and the Nail Driving Comp – the crowd really gets behind these events and will cheer the competitors on to victory! There are foot races for the kids and fun for all! Another aspect of the day is the horse racing, show jumping and novelty horse events, with the Glenlyon Cup run over 1200 metres. There’ll be food and drinks available to purchase. Brekky will be available for early starters. It’s a fantastic fun family day out. Entry is $10 for adults, kids under 12 free. Gates open at 10:30am, wood chop events begin at 12pm. For more info go to Glenlyon.vic.au LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU
Run For The Willow The Daylesford Gift
RUNNING for fun is actually not that fun. Running for the chance to win $2000 changes everything. Saturday, January 2, is the 11th annual Run For The Willow event. This athletics carnival attracts professional racers from all over Australia to have a crack at a full card of running events from 70m to 1600m. The $2000 Daylesford Gift is the big one. This 100m race is hotly contested and promises to be the most exciting 10 seconds you’ll have all day. Run For The Willow is held at Cricket Willow (355 Hepburn-Newstead Rd). Come along and enjoy a great day of foot races. Since 2005 this event has raised more $24,000 for Camp Quality and other charities. While you’re there take in a little of Australia’s cricket history. Cricket Willow trees were used to create bats for the Australian Cricket Team, and even today you can still watch the process, from bud to bat. More info at cricketwillow.com. au or call 5476 4277.

the Gherkin

WE LOVE a gherkin. And not just because it is possibly one of the best words in the English language. Gherkins are tasty little morsels of zingy deliciousness. No cheese platter is complete without them. And we’re really excited to tell you… we know a little place where you can make your own!! (Yay!! DIY gherkins!) Adsum Farmhouse in Glenlyon is a small three acre farmlet on the bend as you head into town (from Daylesford). The historic 1880s farmhouse is now a much-loved family home and Fiona and Edward are passionate about growing good food to nourish their family and the community… AND… They’re a bit mad about gherkins. As we go to print their gherkin rows are growing, with loads of lovely little potential pickles popping out of their plots. In January these little babies will be ready for the picking and you are invited to join Edward for a Gherkin Workshop! (Could there actually be a more exciting workshop? We think not!) Sundays: January 3, January 17, and January 31, (2pm – 4pm) you are invited to Adsum Farmhouse to pick your own gherkins, learn how to pickle them with Edward (in the traditional garlic and dill style) and then you get to take home your own big jar of gherkins to enjoy! There will be a maximum of five people per workshop, and the cost ($75pp) includes a tour of the farm. The farm is completely lovely, with a magnificent 100+ year old oak at the gate and an 80+ year old mulberry producing a bounty of mulberries each year. Adsum Farmhouse welcomes wwoofers to help them through the busy times (um, when is it not a busy time on a farm?) and they have recently had an artist from the UK stay with them, take a look at the amazing murals she has created on the exterior walls and workshop doors (they’re completely gorgeous). For more info and bookings call 5348 7757, email adsumfarmhouse@gmail.com or go to adsumfarmhouse.com.au. Gherkin workshops will also continue through February and March. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

THE Boîte is a celebration of Australia’s culturally diverse musical community. For more than 35 years The Boîte has nurtured, presented and promoted hundreds of completely amazing musicians, artists, dancers, writers and storytellers from all over the world, (many of whom have fled their homeland) across thousands of events. Each January, The Boîte Singer’s Festival is held in Daylesford. It is a joyous and (very) harmonious start to the year. Across the four days we are all completely united in song. The festival will be held Thursday, January 7, to Sunday, January 10. These four days promise a world of vocal inspo, perfect harmonies, delicious beats and sheer fun, as artists from around the world come to Daylesford to lead and take part in workshops, concerts and forums. You can expect songs from Georgia, Bulgaria, Senegal and South Africa mixing it up with a bit of soul, funk, hip hop and everything inbetween. The Daylesford Town Hall is the hub for the festival, with many events, concerts, performances and workshops happening at this venue across the weekend. The Daylesford Singers’ Festival welcomes singers of all ability and experience. There are songwriting workshops all weekend, concluding in a songwriter’s blackboard concert. Learn about the unique vocal sounds delivered by different cultures, explore these qualities in a meaningful way and discover new perspectives to enhance your own vocal ability. Or, (even if you can’t hold a note) just come along and enjoy a whole world of amazing and inspirational performances. There are a variety of ticketing options available - including weekend passes, group bookings, day passes, concert tickets and individual event tickets. To book go to: trybooking.com/HYXK For more information and the full program go to boite.com. au or call 9417 1983 (Tuesday – Friday).

Summertime
MID summer where have you been all my life? In deepest July we thought you’d never arrive. We thought our annual traverse around the sun had ground to a halt and we were stuck in deepest winter foreverrrrr. Yet here you are – with your bleached skies and rapid line-drying times, your baked earth, reptile favoured long-grasses and late sunsets. Oh Summer. We love you. One of the best things you can do around here in summer is to head to Lavandula for their annual lavender harvest festival, (Sunday, January 10). Experience the traditional process as they harvest the crop with half moon sickles, then hang it to dry beneath the verandah of the old 1860s stone farmhouse. Watch as they remove the flowers and distil them to produce lavender water and essential oil. You can bet it’s one of the most beautiful (and fragrant) days out you’ll ever have. Lavandula (at 350 Hepburn-Newstead Road, just 10 minutes north of Daylesford) is one of the most picturesque properties in Victoria, with beautiful European gardens planted around the original and restored 1850s buildings. The Harvest Festival is a brilliant day to see Lavandula in action, with workshops and demonstrations, fab food stalls serving up the most delicious regional fare, and the wood fired oven will be working overtime at La Trattoria Cafe. Bring a picnic blanket and sit in the shade of a magnificent old tree. There’ll be live music and dancing all day – and loads of opportunity to sample and buy the most beautiful lavender products under the summer sun. Entry is $6 for adults and $2 for school aged kids. Dogs are welcome on a leash. Harvest Festival opening times 10:30am – 5:30pm. Regular opening times throughout summer: 10:30am – 5:30pm (Open every day during the school holidays, closed over Christmas: December 24/25/26). Regular entry fee $4 adult, $1 school aged kids. A World of Organs in little ol’ Clunes
THIS region is home to many historic cathedrals and churches. Some of these old buildings house magnificent old pipe organs. For 21 years a quiet little festival (the Organs of The Ballarat Goldfields) has been celebrating these impressive old instruments and this year they are holding two concerts in Clunes on Monday, January 11. At 11am at St Paul’s Anglican Church see The Marian Mystery (a series of medieval chants and carols, renaissance, baroque and beyond) performed with vocalists and Anne Morgan on the organ (wonder if she’s any relation to Barry?) At 2:30pm the Camerata Antica will be performed at the former Wesley Methodist Church (Wesley College, Clunes Campus). Rarely heard German and Italian renaissance works will be recreated on historically accurate instruments (the cornetto and curtal) with Anna Sandström (soprano) and organist David Drury. More info and bookings at Ballarat.com/organs

BEN Quilty is one of Australia’s most important artists. An Archibald Prize winner, his work is expressive, bold and deeply moving. In 2011 he went to Afghanistan as an official war artist, to capture the experiences of Australians deployed in Afghanistan and the UAE. Ben spoke with many Australian servicemen and women and produced a body of work that reflects the intensity of their experiences, and the personal and psychological impacts of war. The resulting body of work: After Afghanistan is a travelling exhibition. More than 70,000 Australian have seen these works, and the exhibition is coming to the Castlemaine Art Gallery (14 Lyttleton Street) from Friday, January 15, until Sunday, May 15. The gallery is open 10am – 5pm Monday to Friday and 12pm – 5pm Saturday and Sunday (Closed Tuesdays). Entry is $4, conc. $3, members and children free. A Gold Mine of Treasure in the dusty old goldfields
TRASH and treasure, flea markets, second hand stalls and garage sales - it’s the stuff fossickers’ dreams are made of. Each summer the rummagers and the retrophiles converge on Fryerstown, (a wee dot in the dirt between Daylesford and Castlemaine) for a long weekend of treasure hunting at the annual Fryerstown Antique Fair. (Friday, January 22, ‘til Sunday, January 24.) This year marks the 41st Fryerstown Fair. It’s three days of second-hand-heaven in sprawling dusty paddocks, with hundreds of stalls, and oodles of fellow treasure hunters. Follow the signs to Burke and Wills Hall Castlemaine St. Discover fine antiques and retro collectibles, there’s furniture, homewares, bric-a-brac, Australiana, rustic bits and bobs, things from your granny’s pantry and so many things you never knew you needed. Pack the sunscreen and a water bottle. There’s food available. Entry is a few dollars. More info: 5473 4373.

THE Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Road Hepburn) consistently delivers awesome live music for those among us who need to hear it loud and live. Sunday, January 31, they’ve managed to wrangle to the stage Mustered Courage. These guys play a mighty fine blend of bluegrassy, rootsy, folk rock, with sublime harmonies and some finger-pickin’ good instrumentation. These Aussie pals were invited by the International Bluegrass Music Association (USA) to play the 2014 World of Bluegrass Conference and Festival, this was followed by a huge 60 show string of concerts across the States. They’ve since been back to play the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and now that they’re back home they’re squeezing in a gig for us at the little Ol’ Hepburn Hotel. (Yes. It’s kind of a big deal.) They’ll be hitting the Old Hep from 5pm-7pm. Tickets are $10 on the door. For more info call the pub 5348 2207 or go to oldhepburnhotel.com.au LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU
