Dolphin dolphin dolphin And a beer. A real beer

WAYNE and Penny Burt are real ale aficionados. They subscribe to the philosophy of CAMRA (Campaign for real ale - look it up, fascinating stuff!) to promote the cause of traditional ale. Wayne and Penny took their quest for real ale and combined it with over 40 years of brewing experience to create Dolphin Brewery, right here in Spa Country. Now, whilst we are on a coffee themed (and fuelled) year of production here at lost, we are partial to the odd cold brew too, but enough about us, let’s talk Dolphin. The real ales are available at the local farmers markets in Trentham, Daylesford and Castlemaine (details page 56) or by emailing: sales@dolphinbrewery.com.au or call: 0429 953 939. There’s the regular range plus some seasonal and Belgian, British and (soon) American inspired styles. The dolphin website is a wealth of info, even food pairing suggestions and beer education offerings. Visit: dolphinbrewery.com.au. Cheers and have one for us too, we’re on Febfast! dp

Benjamin Skepper

Castlemaine via Moscow BENJAMIN Skepper is one of the most exciting people in contemporary classical music. He performs harpsichord, cello, electronic gear and other bits and pieces, and his performance itinerary reads like a hybrid of Vogue Magazine and Lonely Planet. He has created extraordinary music for both Paris and Tokyo fashion weeks and his passport was last stamped in Russia via Italy. (Where he featured in Rolling Stone magazine and played to exclusive A-list audiences). So… what brings Benjamin and his exquisite installation/ sound artistry to Castlemaine? Dunno. But if it’s good enough for Fendi, Dita Von Teese, and the French Consulate in Japan it’s good enough for The Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves Street, Castlemaine). Saturday, February 4, at 7.30pm. Tickets: $35 pre-booked or $40 at the door. More info phone 54721196.

Organic wood fired sourdough SERIOUSLY is there anything better than the smell of fresh bread? (apart from coffee – yeah okay and possibly bacon… fresh cut grass? Okay, stop it.) There IS, in fact, something better than catching a waft of freshly baked bread, and that is the aroma of a steaming loaf of organic wood fired sourdough that you have diligently crafted yourself. Never had the pleasure? Best you book yourself in to a sourdough baking workshop at Trentham’s award winning RedBeard Bakery (38A High Street). Sundays, February 5, 19 and 26, (11am – 5pm). John Reid, (co-owner of RedBeard) instructs on how to make sourdough starter culture, flour types, mixing, proving, shaping dough, adding fruit and grains and more. Add a few rounds of RedBeard’s mighty fine coffee and treats from the ancient wood fired oven, and it’s a brilliantly delicious day out. Places at RedBeard’s Sourdough Workshops go fast, for bookings call Trentham Neighbourhood Centre: 5424 1354. Cost is $240. kd

Would a good wood chopper

Chop good wood if he could? He would! WOOD chopping has been around for hundreds of years and every country town worth its wood has one. In more recent times wood chopping events have become extremely competitive affairs, which can include seven different competitions… there’s even a handicapping system. (What do they do? Give the guy a blunt axe and a blind fold?) Find out Saturday, February 4, at the Lyonville Community Hall, (Bremner Avenue). This year Lyonville is also hosting the Victorian Championship Title for the 14” standing block… It’s a major wood chopping event and attracts a couple of hundred people. For us mere mortals there’s a sausage sizzle, live entertainment (other than the live wood chopping hulks that is) kids activities and a white elephant sale. Entry is 3 bucks! For more info give Anne Bremner a call on: 5348 5515 or shoot Shirley Corneille an email at: corneille53@gmail.com. dp

Give your liver some lovin’ FOR a good reason or cause one can go without just about anything. Good willed people are doing it all the time; temporarily going without shelter to raise awareness and money for the homeless, 40 hours without food for the famined, and for the past four years: going without booze, bubbles and bevvies for those with dependence on drugs and alcohol. The month of February has fast become the month to abstain. Over 20,000 Australians have taken up the challenge and collectively raised over $3 million which was allocated to more than 30 programs across Australia, focussing on helping young people take control of their lives and overcome alcohol and other drug problems. The Youth Support and Advocacy Service (YSAS Pty Ltd) is the charitable agency whose sole purpose is to help young people face their own alcohol and substance use problems. YSAS use funds from Febfast to help continue this vital work. Hey, even though it’s a leap year February is still the shortest month of the year, so why not give it a go? Your liver will be sure to thank you and there’s even a ‘get out of jail free’ card (for a small fee) for those with an important celebration to attend. A FEBFAST Mocktail to help kick-off your charitable side: The Volcano necessities: 1 punnet of strawberries A little lemonade Ice: 4-6 cubes Make: Hull strawberries & chop in half. Throw into blender with ice. Blend until combined and smooth. Pour strawberry mix into glass and add 1/4 glass of lemonade. Stir. Serve straight away. Cheers! If you want to register or donate visit the website: febfast.org.au and find the many folk willing to fast for Feb! Who knows there may be a lost name or two on there... dp

Splendid summer

in the sunshine

SO you’ve visited the local cellar doors, played a round of golf at Hepburn Golf Club (Golf Links Road), tap-danced your way through every shop in town, enjoyed a spa and a massage, and perhaps indulged in a spot of lunch. (For a full rundown on local dining options in the area, check out your lost café and restaurant guide which starts on page 59). So what’s next I hear you ask? Lake Daylesford, that’s what! Take some time to mosey on down to this beautiful Daylesford landmark, where you can walk off your lunch with a long lap around the entire lake (there’s two parts...no cheating now!), soaking in the views alongside local ducks, geese and swans, not to mention the turtles. If you’re more of the picnicking kind, pack an afternoon tea and plant yourself under one of the many willow trees, or next to the playground if the kids need entertaining. For written word enthusiasts, you can visit the lake’s very own second hand bookstore Bookbarn and sip away on a hot frothy latte while you pour over your latest literary find. When ready, you could make your way next door and you’ll find a brand new ceramics outlet from the local co-op: Clayspace. With a beautiful and distinctive collection of ceramics created by local artists for sale, you’re bound to find something for yourself or someone you love. With a final spin around said lake on a paddle boat or a kayak, or a walk along one of the many walking tracks stemming from the lake, and of course the mandatory glass of bubbly at the Boat Shed Café, your splendid afternoon lakeside is pretty much complete! jfb

Fire Ready

The ABC of the CFA

lost the guide to where to find it

VICTORIA is probably the most fire prone place on earth. Lucky you, you’re here in Summer! Last year was a big rain year which means there’s been plenty of growth around the place, in particular, grasses. The CFA have stated that this fire season poses a heightened risk for grass fires. Whilst not as spectacular as forest fires, grass fires move two or three times faster, and are just as deadly. On a day of total fire ban DO NOT light fires in the open, flick cigarette butts, or be generally stupid with fire. On a day of Catastrophic fire danger (Code Red) your safest bet is to leave the region the night before, or early in the morning. In the event you’re still around, and townships are under threat, here is a list of Neighbourhood Safer Places in the region. (To be used as a last resort in bushfire emergencies.) Daylesford: CBD (Bounded by Bridport, Albert & Camp Streets & Central Springs Rd). Clunes: CBD Fraser Street (between Templeton and Service Streets) Creswick: Visitor Information Centre Car Park (behind the building) Cnr Victoria Street and Albert Street. Trentham: CBD Camp Street (between Cosmo Road and Bowen Street) Glenlyon: Eldon Street (between Molesworth Street and house number 19) On days of significant fire risk it is vital that you keep an eye/ear on local media to know what is happening in your area. For general and fire weather warnings visit www.bom.gov.au - For specific fire info go to www.cfa.vic. gov.au or www.dse.vic.au- In an emergency situation local radio will keep you up to date with what’s going on, in Daylesford and Central Victoria listen to ABC Local 91.1 fm or ABC Local 107.9 fm. dp

That’s exactly what Saturday February 11 looks like if you sign up for Prunella’s (66 Piper Street, Kyneton) Cloche workshop. You’ll learn all the techniques to create your very own masterpiece and they’ll supply not only the materials but also, a delicious afternoon tea and said bubbles. On Saturday, February 25, they’ll teach you how to arrange beautiful seasonal flowers and foliage in their signature vessels! Of course, there are bubbles and snacks too. Cost is $150. They’ll even tailor make a course to suit you and a small group of your favourite peeps. For more info visit: prunella.com.au or call: 5410 8835. dp 38

Pugsley Buzzard

and the Howe Street Blues PUGSLEY Buzzard. Now, that there is a name. A name you’d imagine befitting a fellow with a huge bluesy voice. Lucky then that Pugsley Buzzard has precisely that and then some. If you are thinking a bit Louis Armstrong mixed with a touch of Tom Waits then you are on the right track. Pugsley Buzzard is a singer, songwriter extraordinaire who happens to be a pretty fine piano player too. His engaging and dazzling shows have been likened to New Orleans funk Harlem Stride, New Orleans Funk, Swampshack Jazz and Barrelhouse Blues to Modern Improvisations. On Friday February 3, Pugsley (fresh from his US tour) hits Horvat’s Wine Bar (Shop 3, Howe Street, Daylesford) for a foot-stomping night of tunes, blues and awesomeness. From 9pm, entry is free.

ANNIE Smithers is a much loved local chef who does very clever things with the freshest local and seasonal produce on hand. Her restaurant aptly named: Annie Smithers (72 Piper Street. Kyneton), uses produce from her own acre garden in nearby Malmsbury. The menu is written around what’s in season and is loosely based on classic French bistro fare, with her own unique twist. Delish! Recently, a gorgeous old building became available in Trentham, Annie saw potential and voila! Enter to the foodie scene: Du Fermier (42 High Street, Trentham), meaning literally ‘of the farmer’, the café and provedore is French style farmhouse and is serving beautiful housemade terrines and, whilst berries are still in season, scrumptious Eton’s Mess, this week anyhow, the blackboard menu changes according to what’s in the garden. Open Wednesday to Mondays, 10am till 4pm. More info kd visit: anniesmithers.com.au.

My little pony trials the jumps

THE teeny hamlet of Glenlyon (just 10 klicks from Daylesford or 20 from Kyneton) is a special place. There’s a fantastic gourmet general store, boutique wineries, it’s home to open gardens, longest lunches, sculpture shows, even fine food and wine fayres. Glenlyon also boasts the District Pony Club (Glenlyon Recreation Reserve) with facilities to rival any. The disciplines on offer are: show jumping, cross country, dressage, grooming and certificates. Rallies are held the third Sunday of the month (we’ve got the heads up to avoid the Reserve on the first Saturday of each month, that’s when the ‘gun club’ has booked the facilities – good call). The Pony Club Horse Trials (equestrian event comprising dressage, cross-country, and show jumping) are on Sunday, February 26, with entries closing February 15. live music! THURSDAY, February 23 is Save Live Australian Music day, dedicated to exactly that. What started as a heeeuge (20,000 people strong) rally in Melbourne two years ago, (a-hem… long live The Tote!) SLAM is now a national event dedicated to putting an end to the death of live music. And with a whole lotta amazing live music in this region we’re certainly doing our part. The Palais (111 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) serves up great performances each and every weekend, and local band The Family Farm are moving in for Feb, well kinda, they’ll be there every Thursday playing their bluesgrassy, jazz style tunes and will conclude with a special performance on SLAM day with giveaways and a few surprises in store. Picnic at Hanging Rock

lost the guide to where to find it

(pass the aged chèvre Miranda) BACK in a time when pubs served pots, (not foie gras) in a land, not so far away... where a barbeque meant snags ‘n’ white bread and (more) beer… (not Thai infused scallops with coriander foam) a few foodie-minded-folk had a vision. To create a celebration of fine local food and produce to be enjoyed by a gathering of lovers of deliciousness. They packed picnic rugs, baskets of the most mouth watering morsels, and headed to Hanging Rock. (Yes, the very one and same rock from the book, movie, and legend of the same name) And thus: The Age Harvest Picnic at Hanging Rock was born. Now in its 25th year the annual Harvest Picnic is a must do event in any food lover’s diary. Circle Sunday, February 26, in yours, pack your appetite and head to The Rock to sample and indulge in the best produce, fresh food, gourmet goodies and wines Victoria has to offer. Trawl trestles laden with unusual cheeses, finest preserves, scoops of exquisite icecream, handcrafted smallgoods, exotic barbeque flavours, heavenly and indulgent sweets and so much more. But it’s not all about stuffing your face (a-hem, grazing gourmand style) you could also learn a thing or two. There will be cooking demos by well known chefs willing to share a few tricks and treats. It’s all a bit grand, the food fab, the setting spectacular, lazing under the gums with The Rock behind you, live music, and a glass of local wine. Cheers indeed to the peeps with those visionary tastebuds back in the 80s. The Age Harvest Picnic is at Hanging Rock Reserve, South Rock Road, Hanging Rock. 9am-5pm. Ticket prices: (pre-purchased online at: harvestpicnic.com.au) adults $20, concession $15, children under 15 free. Or tickets purchased on the day: adults: $30, concession: $25 Children under 15 free. More info 9521 8844. Or for more info on Hanging Rock or the region see: visitmacedonranges.com Aside: No school children or nuns were harmed in the making of this article... but possibly the chef who made the coriander foam. kd
