It’s Not a Cute Guitar… It’s a Ukulele

UKULELES have had a resurgence in recent years. No longer relegated to Hawaiian holidays and kitschy Tiki ornaments, the uke is cool, and you’ll find them in the hands of tuneful hipsters and musical funsters everywhere. Each Friday morning the Trentham Neighbourhood Centre (Cnr High and Market Streets, Trentham) hosts Cool Country Ukes, a gathering of like-minded uke fans - and you’re invited to join in the fun. Anyone with (or even without) a uke is welcome (they have a few spare ukuleles at hand). Come along and have a jam from 10am – 12pm. Cost is just a gold coin donation. For more information give Mez 0403 007 761 or Sue 0418 320 735 a buzz, or just head over to the Neighbourhood Centre on a Friday morn with a uke slung over your shoulder ready for action. Would a Wood Chop Chop?

WOOD chopping is a serious sport. You don’t mess with blokes swinging axes. Having said that – witnessing a wood chop is also pretty awesome… Those blokes swinging axes can chop some MASSIVE logs in double quick time! The Lyonville Woodchop is a classic country event, Saturday, February 6, you’re invited to witness Australia’s best axemen take to the blocks in their best singlets to chop chop chop like mad for the glory of victory (and some pretty sweet cash - there’s a $1000 first prize up for grabs). The events start at 10:30am and the day includes loads of fun stuff for those not that into wood (lookin’ at you kidlets). There’ll be free face painting and a free jumping castle, as well as food and drinks available. Entry is $5 (kids free). (Tip: try to get these guys’ numbers… they’ll be good blokes to know in winter, we’re certain they have the best wood piles in town. For more info call Anne Bremner 5348 5515. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

New Life

THERE are so many reasons people come to Daylesford. The stunningly distinct seasons, the magical natural environment, the luxe, boutique-y, cottage-y feel of town – and there are so SOOOO many favourite places to eat and drink. For eons visitors have sought peace and quiet, beauty and indulgence in Daylesford, and as always, Daylesford delivers. And if you’re one of the lucky ones you might even get to live here. Katie and Trudy are two of the lucky ones, and recently they realised a dream to own one of Daylesford’s most loved cafés: Cliffy’s. Cliffy’s Emporium (30 Raglan St.) has had a revival. Once upon a time (as in, the late 1800s) the old café was a general store, selling everything imaginable by the scoop or by the pound. Katie and Trudy have reinvented the old space, opening up the old store to reveal rustic bench tops and shelving, with more space to sit and eat, chat and live your Daylesford dream. The breakfast and lunch menu has had a makeover too, it’s simple and yum with everything made in-house, with a focus on fresh local produce and the best bits from overseas... (lookin’ at you cheese display)… think luscious French classics d’Affinois and Délice as well as amazing Australian cheeses and charcuterie including delicious bits from Istra, Tuki, Country Style Smallgoods and JimJam Produce. Cliffy’s has a fab wine list and a take away license… (did someone say picnic?) and they’re the only café in town to stock Annie Smithers’ produce. The coffee is Motobean (from Malmsbury up the road) and they’re making it any way you like it. As many locals will know Katie is a fab baker and you’ll often find her whipping up amazing cakes for weddings and celebrations with her other business: Eat Cake. Be Happy. Katie will soon be selling her cakes at Cliffy’s! And here’s another heads up - Tuesday night local dinners are coming! Yay! (Watch this space!) Cliffy’s is open 8am-4pm, 7 days. Hunting for Treasure

on a Grand Scale

18

THERE is something about this old gold region that turns us all into treasure hunters. The ghosts of the gold rush still stir up the thrill of the hunt within us, and we’re all a bit mad about scrounging around and fossicking for something precious. The 8th Maldon Antique and Collectables Fair is where you’ll find thousands of treasure hunters this month. Saturday, February 20, and Sunday, February 21, more than 120 stallholders will converge on the Maldon Football Grounds to set up their stalls laden with antiques and collectables from all over Australia. Collectors, start your engines... this is the real deal. The Maldon Antique and Collectables Fair is truly one of the biggest and best. The entire footy ground is chokkers full of rare, valuable, collectable pieces from yesteryear. Think retro vintage awesomeness and kitschy-cool bits and bobs, right through to fabulous high-end antiques, furniture, fashion, curios, knick-knacks and all manner of interesting and unique pieces. Head over to Maldon and trawl the trestles for amazing pieces for your home - you’ll never know what you’ll find – you might uncover a lost Picasso in an IKEA frame, you might find your great grandfather’s old fob-watch, you might find an original Featherston lounge suite (fingers crossed) or another treasure you can’t live without – (come on… you know you want to!) The fair has over one and a half kilometres of stalls, so pull on the comfy shoes and set aside a whole day to pick your way through it all. Leave no ceramic bowl unturned. The fair is open 8am – 5pm both days. Entry is $5pp. (It you know someone with a ute – it’s time to ask them a favour… you’ll need to borrow it to bring home all the amazingness) For more information go to maldon.org.au or call Mark or Bonnie: 0414 244 842. Never Sounded So Good

22

IF you were to write a book of your life, to keep your audience hooked you might need to edit it down to a few hundred pages… Rock, blues and country artist Bo Jenkins would need to edit his down to a few hundred chapters. Born in Bottleneck, Arkansas, Bo has Native American heritage and blues in the blood. He has played on stage with Albert King, Reba McIntyre, B. B. King and Kansas… Nowadays he lives in humble old Melbs, and is heading up the freeway to pay us a visit, Saturday, February 27. Bo Jenkins is playing the Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) to serve us up a dose of his blues infected Southern rock. His guitar technique is raved about, and he is generous with his knowledge – passing on his technique in lessons and seminars. His sound transcends genres – it’ll be a treat to see him on the stage at the Old Hep. Show from 9pm. Tickets $5. For more info call the pub 5348 2207. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

Daniel Bayonas (Kaizen) is an internationally accomplished DJ – who now lives in the area, he’ll be dishing out the tunes for young and old (which is probs a bit better than your backyard music set up). A Decent Hair Cut For Your Fruit Trees

REMEMBER last summer? It was Nectarine Nirvana. This summer… not so much. You bet there is, and you’re invited to learn all the secrets in a special summer pruning workshop at Creswick Neighbourhood Centre: Sunday, February 28. Grocer & Florist

Y’KNOW what’s so great about this region? So many of the brightest stars in the big smoke are attracted to the fresh air (and guaranteed great coffee) that they move here… and bring with them their big ideas and grand plans to share. Before too long these creative superstars from the city weave their magic and share their talents, gifts, knowledge and amazing skills with our town, and we are all the richer for it. Our new locals are a major part of what makes this part of the world so great. Wootton & Nicholls (10 Howe St, Daylesford) are relatively new kids in the Howe Street block and bring some ace floristry skills and clever ideas to their little florist and small batch grocer shop. Zara Nicholls is a superstar boutique florist, She hits the Melbourne flower markets for beautiful and unusual blooms, and creates glorious arrangements and bouquets for weddings and special events. She has an amazing eye for flowers and you can wander into the store and pick up a bunch of something completely perfect or order something bespoke and beautiful. The other half of the store is full of local deliciousness. The grocery sources small batch delicacies, organic and heirloom fruit and vegies grown (quite literally) up the road, and other delish hard-to-find treats. Danny Wootton is a designer and signwriter (check out their amazing gold leaf front window – it’s all his handiwork). He has a way with words (and letters) and creates amazing hand lettered signs like the days of old (with a totally modern twist) – they’re gorgeous. With Valentine’s Day popping up mid-month, be sure to place your order for something unique toot-sweet! (Think beyond the red rose peeps… Zara would love to create something magical for your Valentine.) Place Valentine’s flower orders prior to Saturday 13th(am). Phone orders: 5348 4715.
