Folklore or fact
coffee founded by goats
ACCORDING to coffee legend history an Arabian shepherd saw his goats bizarrely dancing around a mysterious shrub, said shrub produced bright red cherries, said goats had consumed. After sampling the shrubs’ wares and feeling peculiar euphoria, the shepherd dealt the drug to the local monastery, who found it particularly helpful to stay awake during prayer – and, hey presto, coffee was born! We’re not only celebrating coffee here at lost, but coffee awesomeness…and, what better part of the world to partake in coffee heaven than Daylesford and its surrounds? This series of lost will showcase how blessed these parts are for the ground bean and show off the talented folk who make our daily fix. And we’ll throw in a few dancing goats to boot. Stay tuned for the next, oh...10 issues. dp To celebrate the revival of lost and to celebrate our love for being revived (with a good cuppa) we want to know – what’s
WE WANT to know – how do you have it? Is it a soy, decaf, half strength mocha or a straight up shot? Follow us on twitter like us on facebook and tell us your favourite coffee style and go into the draw for $50 of freshly roasted beans from Coffee Basics in Castlemaine. That’s a whole lotta macchiatos! The best (quirkiest) answer, wins! Really it’s win win. Winner will be tweeted and in our face on August 1. lost_magazine lostmagazine dp

LET’S face it, Jimmy Webb is a bit of a legend. Over the past 40 years he has penned so many Grammy award winning songs, for artists such as Glen Campbell, Joe Cocker and Art Garfunkel, that you think he’d be a bit sick of the sight of his piano… BUT NO! Jimmy is taking time out from his North American tour, to do a series of intimate shows in Australia, and the Palais (111 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) is lucky enough to be hosting one of them. Sunday, July 3, see Jimmy Webb perform some of the worlds’ favourite songs live with his piano. (Oh, and don’t worry if you don’t recognise his name… you’ll definitely know all the words!) $66 show only, or $106 dinner and show kd More info and bookings, call: 5348 4849 or visit: www.thepalais.com.au 6

Hannah Gillespie
lost the guide to where to find it
all the dirt
DON’T know about you, but the only jam sessions we ever had around the kitchen table as kids, were strawberry, blackberry, and the occasional marmalade. Hannah Gillespie grew up in the formidable grip of real kitchen table jam sessions with her muso dad Pete Gillespie and his legendary 80 folk/jug band Patterson’s Curse. So with songwriting in the genes, it’s no wonder Hannah has developed a knack for telling real, honest stories in her songs, that centre on the human divide between what one feels, what one wants and what one actually ends up doing. Her music tells tales of “there is no greater angst and everyday joy in source of inspiration simple lyrics that tug at the for a songwriter gut, show all the dirt and than a broken get right to the bleeding heart, a lost soul, a point. With a history rich shit party or a bad in music, Hannah spent day at the races.” the 90s managing Indie bands in Melbourne before moving on to formal studies 2009 saw her first album Growing up Stupid released under Canberra Indie label Longhaul before a chance encounter at a pub gained her the attention of American musician and producer Ken Stringfellow (The Posies, R.E.M, Big Star) who produced, to great acclaim her 2nd Album All The Dirt. In the words of the lady herself, “there is no greater source of inspiration for a songwriter than a broken heart, a lost soul, a shit party or a bad day at the races.” Hannah performs at The Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) with much loved local and Tamworth Alt-country favourite Cyndi Boste on Sunday, July 31 at 3pm. Entry is Free. For a full run down of entertainment possibilities this month, check out the lost gig guide on page 30 or for regular up-to-date info visit: www.facebook.com/lostmagazine. The bread winner
lost the guide to where to find it
proves well
HAVE you ever seen artisan bakers sculpting perfect loaves of authentic hand crafted organic sourdough? - No. That’s because you’re normal and you’re usually asleep at 3:30am like the rest of us. BUT! If you’re normal and your mouth waters at the smell of an artisan loaf fresh and steaming from a wood fired oven, then you’ll salivate at the chance to learn how to make a traditional sourdough loaf from two of Australia’s finest award winning bakers. Brothers John and Al Reid, cofounded RedBeard Historic Bakery (38A High Street, Trentham) six years ago, and, we might add just picked up two gongs at the National Bakery Industry Association for excellence and for being green. This month, they’ll be hosting sourdough baking workshops. The workshops will be held in the normal human waking hours of between 9am and 3pm, at RedBeard Historic Bakery. The six hour sessions will be hands-on, with everyone shaping, baking and tasting sourdough bread, and learning all the tricks to make a perfect loaf, rather than a deflated Sherrin-like lump that’s harder to chew than, erm… a deflated Sherrin. Bread aficionados will revel in the chance to sneak behind the scenes and see the amazing 19th Century Scotch oven, at 16 metres square, it’s big enough to bake 800 loaves in a single firing! Only a few ovens of this size remain in Australia today. After a history lesson over an organic fair-trade coffee, participants will learn how to make their own starter culture (and take it home, with a bag of biodynamic flour), they’ll learn how to mill flour, how to add nuts and fruits to loaves, how to prove and shape dough and all the while indulge on wood fired treats and a delicious lunch. Six hour workshops are $240 and usually sell out, so payment in advance is required. Workshop dates are: Sundays, July 3, 17 and 31. Book via Trentham Neighbourhood House on: 5424 1354 or visit: www.redbeardbakery.com.au for more info. Kathy Douglas 12
Masterchef
WELL, actually there’d be three. If you’re lucky enough to book in in time, you could score a masterclass with three of the best (or top) cooks in Donovan Cooke, Mark Best (pardon the puns) and Paul Wilson (sorry, got nothing). On Sunday, July 24, the exceptionally talented chefs will demonstrate their stuff in the Lake House (King Street, Daylesford) demonstration kitchen (funnily enough) and show any wanna-be chefs just how its done. The day will be topped off with wine tastings from Michael Dhillon (Bindi), lunch and nibbles from all three chefs. Seats are limited. Cost $195 per person. COULDN’T create a new heading, with a fabulous name like that. Smooth sulty, sassy, haunting songs, soft sweeping pop, and cutting lyrics is what you’ll get when three of Australia’s most stunning songwriters collaborate. Sarah Blasko, Holly Throsby and Sally Seltmann, are the brains behind the exquisitely named: Seeker Lover Keeper. The self-titled album was released last month and if facebook is anything to go by, they are über popular (www.facebook.com/seekerloverkeeper). All three songwriters share distinct talents, a common love of nostalgia, musing over love and well, damn fine voices. Why would we tease you with this vision of loveliness? Why, they are coming to town of course. Castlemaine town that is. Friday, July 22, the Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves Street), have been clever enough to have booked Seeker Lover Keeper as part of their awesome line up for the month. Jali Buba Kuyateh
lost the guide to where to find it
from Gambia with love THE music of Africa across its many countries has vast and distinct differences. But all encompass the primal power of unyielding rhythms and driving percussive beats. So, sitting here in central Jali has combined Victoria sooooo far from his rich history with Mother Africa, and well contemporary rhythms outside of the bright city of reggae, salsa, jazz lights, it’s a pretty rare treat and blues, forging that we have the luxury of strong comparisons seeing musicians of such to world music great calibre and tradition. ‘Youssou N’dour’. Jali Buba Kuyateh was born into a musical family and grew up between Gambia and Senegal. Following in the footsteps of his parents he began his apprenticeship on the traditional harp-like instrument the ‘Kora’ at age 10 before continuing with traditional dance and song. Now a master of traditional Kora tunes, Jali has combined his rich history with the contemporary rhythms of reggae, salsa, jazz and blues, forging strong comparisons to world music great Youssou N’dour. In 2005 Jali toured Australia performing at festivals including WOMADelaide, the Melbourne International Festival, Woodford and Port Fairy Folk Festival. He has shared the stage with some of Australia’s top musicians including Jazz legend Bob Sedergreen, guitarist Doug De Vries, violinist Nigel McLean, South African performer Valanga Khoza and West African musos Afro Moses and the Mohata Brothers. Jali presents a captivating performance, owning the stage with his exceptional skill and emotional power. Prepare to be transported to another land - He performs at 8.30pm Saturday, July 23, at Horvat’s Wine Bar (Shop 6 Howe St, Daylesford). For more information phone Horvat’s Wine Bar 5348 2333. BEEN to the Creswick Woollen Mill (Railway Parade), that is. If your hand is up, you are missing out. These school holidays you could visit the woollen mill and, better still, make the most of the Meet the Alpacas event, giving a real feel for the place, complete with an opportunity to pat one of the gorgeous camelids (or even-toed ungulates, look it up – fascinating stuff!), that are the stars of the woollen mill. This unique happening takes place every day betwixt July 2 and 16, from 10am till 5pm, with feeding times at 11am and 2pm. And, who wouldn’t want to get up close and personal with a creature named Fernando – the kissing alpaca? The woollen mill, situated in Creswick, 27 klicks west of Daylesford, was founded in 1947 by Polish immigrant, Paul Ryzowy, and it is now the last coloured woollen spinning mill of its kind in Australia. They hold tours of the operations; have a retail factory outlet selling ladies, men’s and kid’s fashion from alpaca, wool, cotton and cashmere. Word has it they even supplied the Oprah Farewell show with their luxury alpaca blanket throws (although that make be classified: top secret). Now, that’s a whole day out right there – no excuses when the kids cry, “I’m bored”… If you don’t make it for the holidays, the end of the month will see the annual Excellence in Fleece Show, where the average punter can cast their vote for the best fibre, takes place: Saturday, 30 and Sunday, 31 July, 11.30 and 130pm. Lewis Ingham
lost the guide to where to find it
born and bred
LET’S face it, if there was a kid at your high school who was as awesome as Lewis Ingham you’d be telling everyone you know about that time that you sat next to him in assembly/ when you went on school camp together/when you bumped into him in the corridor. Because Lewis Ingham is one of those fabulously talented individuals who’s star is rising. So let’s get out the telescope and do a bit of star gazing shall we? Lewis is best known as the front man of the awesomely talented Daylesford High School band The Vets whose psychedelic blues driven sound is influenced by, and draws comparisons to, the likes of the Drones, Hendrix and Cream… not a totally bad compliment. Their music features on JJJ Unearthed and they have performed to appreciative audiences of all ages throughout the area in a myriad of different venues. Having completed a VCE/VET music subject at Daylesford High, Lewis was recently awarded the Premier’s VCE Award (given to the highest score in the state – sheesh!) and if that isn’t enough, he has also forged for himself the beginnings of a solo career that, given his young age, almost defies belief. Lewis’ musical influences began with his parents’ great love of music. His was a childhood set to the musical soundtrack of the Beatles and Wilco and Billy Bragg’s Mermaid Avenue. (thankfully not Bananarama and Bros – or let’s face it, things might not have turned out the same for Lewis…) Lewis Ingham performs intimate, gentle covers and breathtaking originals reminiscent of Nick Drake, and a very early David Bowie, at 7pm on Friday, July 22, at The Cosmopolitan Hotel (Cnr High and Cosmo Rd Trentham). Entry is Free. For a comprehensive run down of entertainment this month, check out the lost gig guide on page 30 or: www.facebook.com/lostmagazine. 24
