Fancy dress
for a fanciful night out
WHO doesn’t love a dress up party? From the age of about three, we totally dig dressing up. You see the little kids in Ironman costumes holding their mummy’s hand to cross the road, you see glitter winged fairies at the butcher, dinosaur tailed, kitty-eared and caped youngsters and weeny supermen with fake abs in playgrounds all over the place. Dressing up is awesome. Some of us never grow out of it… Yes, we’re thinking of you bloke-in-the-sumo-suit at the cricket, and plastic tiara-ed princess hens on your hens’ nights… In recent years the Words In Winter festival has held a much loved Book Ball at the Daylesford Town Hall. (Vincent Street.) It is a bookishly great night of nights with a wonderful dress up theme… Come as your favourite book character. Eeeee! You can dress as an individual character or book a table of ten and each person on the table dresses as a character from a story. We’re tipping there’ll be a few Khaleesis and Jon Snows on the night? Perhaps? This year the Words In Winter Book Ball will be held on Saturday, August 2, from 7:30pm – midnight. (If you dress as Cinderella you’d better leave at ten to…) We are popping this event into the July Magazine so you can get yourself organised, rally friends, buy tickets and bust out the Janome to conjure up the best costume everrrr… There are prizes for best fancy dress and themed table decoration. To keep costs down, the evening is BYO dinner and drinks. (We’re sure Khaleesi has an esky.) Live music will be performed by The Pedigrees. They’ll have everyone up and dancing. YOU know when you’re a little kid and it’s winter and raining and you can’t go outside and ride your scooter, and mum wont let you ride it inside the house (but whyyy?) and that really sucks and everything is borrrrring? Well, the geniuses at WinterFest have the solution kiddos... The Inaugural INDOOR Scooter Grand Prix is here! For one day only (Thursday, July 3,) BYO scooter or three wheeled ridey thing to The ARC (39 Smith Street, Daylesford) from 10am ‘til midday, and go around and around and around and around and around as many times as you can until mum says hometime. (Booooo.) This event is especially for the wee ones kids, 1 to 5 years of age only… we don’t want any 10 car/scooter pile ups. Spend the holidays climbing the walls
WHAT about the kids these days huh? It’s all screens screens screens… Stop your whining gramps. The kids are alright. Okay, so it’s a little challenging when they’re climbing the walls in the holidays… but can you blame them? If you’d prefer they don’t climb your walls - take them down to The ARC (39 Smith Street, Daylesford) Thursday, July 3, and Thursday, July 10, for two hours of wall climbing at theirs. Oh yes. A proper awesome for-real rock climbing wall is at The ARC for the school hols. Two sessions will be held: for 6 – 12 year old kiddos on the 3rd, and for 12- 15 year olds on the 10th. It’s $10 for 2 hours (10am – midday). Wear comfy clothes so you can stretch and reach those high climbing holds, and sneakers for extra grip. Winter holidays…
unleash the children
WINTER is tricky. It is tricky up here with kids. It is tricky when it’s freezing and drizzly and muddy and rainy and icy and bang in the middle of it all it’s school holidays. Winter school hols are tricky. This year a crew of extremely excellent locals has been beavering away at creating a program of school holiday awesomeness to eliminate the winter trickiness. And huzzah! WinterFest was born! Running Saturday, June 28, ‘til Sunday, July 13, WinterFest is a two-week-long celebration of fun stuff for the local kidlets to young adults from age 0 to 25. The program is every kid’s dream. ALL OF IT. From discos to scooting around in circles, to climbing walls, to silversmithing, cool craft and zines, to games and theatre sports, circus performances and skills, workshops, nature walks, movies, a French café improv morning and caboodles more. The program is run in conjunction with the Daylesford Outside School Hours Care vacation program, making for an even more comprehensive program… which includes full days of action packed fun stuff for kids with parents who have to do the 9-to-5 juggle during the school hols. WinterFest activities will be held all over town. Main venues include The ARC (39 Smith Street, Daylesford) Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre (13 Camp Street) and the libraries in Daylesford, Trentham, Creswick and the Warehouse in Clunes. The General wants you! on the fourth of July
THE fourth of July is American Independence Day. We tend not to get toooo excited about it in Australia… But this year it happens to fall on a Friday – and Friday is one of the most exciting days of the week… particularly that bit after 5pm. The Old Glenlyon General Store (63 Barkly St) knows what to do afterhours on a Friday. Each Friday night they host free live music, and on the fourth of July the ‘Family Farm Band’ will be tuning up for the Americana Show. In their nine year heritage Family Farm have played just about every instrument and just about every genre of music, with more than 30 musos joining the family at various times. The current incarnation includes Stacy and Steve, Shane on upright bass, Jeremy from the Resignators on Trumpet and Annie on banjo and percussion. They’re on from 6:30pm. ADALITA is a real-life proper rock star. The lead singer of Magicdirt has been testing the waters of Solo-dom for a while now, and of course she’s totally rocking it. Adalita has played stages the world around for over 20 years, and is about to hit the stage at The Bridge Hotel, (21-23 Walker Street, Castlemaine) Saturday, July 5, in a one off show. This gig is off the back of possibly one of the bestest gigs she’s ever done, as the Super Music Friend at the Yo Gabba Gabba live shows in Melbourne. Only rock royalty get to be super music friends… (if you don’t have kids under 5 you’ll just have to Google it to see what we mean). Adalita will be playing tunes for the grown ups at her Castlemaine gig on the 5th, including loads off her recent album: All Day Venus. and a rather large gospel choir
SINCE the days when we inhabited caves, our species has always rather enjoyed food, wine and song. Not much has changed really… The cave has zoned central heating nowadays, but we still love a good feed and a rousing singalong. The renowned Yarra Gospel Choir and the Clunes Singers are joining forces (and voices) for an afternoon feast of singing, wine, and food. Saturday, July 5, (2pm – 4pm) the choirs will take to the Wesley Bluestone (Service Street Clunes) to raise the roof with their voices. Following the performance the Ladies Committee from the Clunes Agricultural Society and Mount Beckworth Wines will put on a feast of culinary delights for all. The Yarra Gospel Choir has 70 singing members, so it promises to be a fantastic afternoon of gospel classics and general-all-round-feel-goodness. Kids in the kitchen deliciously fun
KIDS love cooking. This is a fact. This is also an activity to be encouraged. Having your five year old whip up a slow cooked pork belly with salty crunchy crackling and orange/star anise/ cinnamon jus is handy. Particularly if your preschooler then follows it up with a delicately tangy citron sorbet. Nice work kidlet. The school holidays are a fab time to acquaint your offspring with the kitchen. And better still if it’s someone else’s kitchen with a fancypants chef teaching them the ropes. Masterchef’s Alice ‘In Frames’ Zaslavsky will host a fun session at Lake House (King St. Daylesford) Sunday, July 6, for kids aged 6-14. Daylesford Primary School’s Kitchen Garden Coordinator Andrew Stone will be helping out too. The 90 minute session starts at 11:30am and includes a fun kids’ lunch. Cost $85. A (happy face) soiree for our furry friends
WHY do they call zebra crossings zebra crossings in Australia? Shouldn’t they be wombat crossings? Or kangaroo crossings? Or at the very least, marsupial crossings. Boy do we need marsupial crossings around here... with flashing lights and lollypop ladies. Every single day roos, echidnas, wombats, possums, koalas, birdies and other native wildlife are injured on our roads. (Sad face.) And the bulk of the casualties (if they survive) are carted off to the Hepburn Wildlife Shelter. The shelter works tirelessly to rehabilitate and nurture sick and injured wildlife back to health, and then they release them back into the bush. (Happy face.) They do such an amazing job… and they’re a not for profit, self funded organisation… it’s all for the love of our furry friends… So you know what would be a totally ace thing to do? You could show them a bit of love and help them raise a bit of much needed cashola to help the kind hearted peeps at the shelter keep up the good work. Sunday, July 6, Lucca Strings are performing at the Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street) in a special fundraising event for the Hepburn Wildlife Shelter. Lucca Strings are a string quartet (featuring graduates from the Royal Academy of Music in London… read: oooh fancy and excellent). The concert will be held from 3pm. Tickets are $60 and include a glass of wine/sparkling and vegan canapés on arrival, and an afternoon of magical music and lots of warm and fuzzy vibes for our warm and fuzzy friends. Y’KNOW how at high school you can kind-of-tell which kids are going to be awesome as grown ups? The ones who are going to succeed at whatever they want to do? There was one of those kids at my high school. He used to carry a guitar around with him everywhere. He looked determined. AND he had long hair… (which was obviously a prerequisite to become a talented muso in the 1980s). Lo and behold. Twenty something years later Jeff Lang has played the world, has released 14 albums, has pointy ARIA awards on his mantle and is loved and respected by musos and us mere mortals everywhere. Le Tour de Woodend
SBS Television has a lot to answer for. As we sit here bleary eyed, recovering from a whole lotta World Cup action, they pretty much roll straight into le Tour de France. WHEN DO WE SLEEP SBS?! Oh, when do we sleeeeep?!! Both The World Cup and Le Tour inspire wanderlust for far away sunny climes… they also inspire a mid winter fitness kick. And if you can be motivated to pull on the runners and step out your front door this time of year you deserve a yellow jersey. AND a medal. A BIG one. Woodend Neighbourhood House hosts Monday morning cycling groups for those wishing to laugh in the face of winter. They depart from the Neighbourhood House (47 Forest Street) at 9am. The Tour de Woodend for more confident riders departs at 10am. (Mt Macedon is kind of like the mountain stages of le Tour… just go with it ok.) STUFF happens on Prom Night. You know how we know this? Because Every. Single. American. Film. Ever. Made. Has a prom night in it. (OK, except for Star Wars. Princess Leia and Chewbacca never got to be Prom Queen and King – maybe they’ll roll that out in Episode VII?? You saw it here first folks, Mr. Lucas you can make the cheque out to us for that AWESOME *cough* idea). Prom night/Deb night is the stuff of legend. A right of passage, a schmancy night out with friends and most importantly and a night of big, huge, brilliant fuuuun for all. This year a masquerade ball to end all balls will be held as part of WinterFest… The Prom-Deb-Thingy will be a celebration of our differences, an inclusive night of acceptance and fun. The dress code is masquerade/formal. Feel free to twist it up your way with a little shambolic formal style, (hello op shop taffeta and tuille!) or go OTT glamazon, or puffy fluffy meringue - it’s your night, we all rock a different style – so dare to debutant your way! Just remember the mask… a masquerade ball prerequisite! Get out the glue gun, feathers and diamantes… it’s time to get a bit creative! This event welcomes 15 – 25 year olds to a safe and openminded space that celebrates all of us, (bad attitudes can be left at home thanks) for a night of great music (The Resignators are playing, (yeah) along with DJs The Vibe Master and DJ Casio… hello… so good.) Dance, (or not), hang out with friends and have the bestest night ever. The Prom-Deb-Thingy will be held at The ARC (39 Smith Street Daylesford) Saturday, July 12, 8pm ‘til 11:30pm. This event is a fully supervised FreeZA drug and alcohol free event. THE Sunday Night Blues is a for-reals, not kidding, actually recognised condition. It’s that ‘meh’ feeling you get postdinner on a Sunday when you realise the working week is a mere one-sleep-away. Ohh MEHHH! We’ve all been there. On the other hand, there is NO SUCH THNG as the Friday Night Blues. Oh no. Does. Not. Exist. Unless… you’re Jarrod Shaw. Jarrod gets the Friday Night Blues often. Particularly if he has a mic in his face and a guitar in his hands. Then the Friday night blues are inevitable. Luckily for us, it’s the good kinda blues. winter (is coming)
WORDS in Winter will be held next month. It’s a monthlong celebration of words, wild ideas, performance, story telling and music held throughout the Hepburn Shire region. This year’s theme is Words on The Wild Side. The program is inspired by words, characters and authors that have challenged and changed the world. Daylesford’s Rex Theatre and Arcade will the hub for Words In Winter, with loads of literary events, wild and wordy discussions, stalls, scrabble afternoons, and more. The Festival Club will be held at the Grande Hotel (1-3 Church Ave, Hepburn Springs), take in a bit of the lyrical word, with live music, comedy, storytelling and more. The Clever Town Crossword Challenge is back (we’ve got our eye on you Newstead...) Celebrate the month with film, musical soirees, exhibitions, poetry, readings, and stories by the fire. Magic. Wild. Baking our blues away cake therapy
THIS here is a pretty special community. We really try to look after each other. The heartfelt warm and fuzziness keeps us toasty though winter. (It’s all about the warm and fuzzies in winter… otherwise we’d probably all move north.) One such lovely community event originating from our humble ‘hood is ‘Baking Our Blues Away’. This sweet event began as bit of a small local bake-up to share with a friend or neighbour who needed a bit of cheering… Then it went bonkers on social media and now thousands of people from all over the place join in this annual day of goodwill and biscuits. This year, the third annual Baking Our Blues Away event will be held on Tuesday, July 15. Everyone is encouraged to take a moment to think about someone you know (or don’t know yet) …someone who could use a little help to put a smile back on their face. Bake something to share with them and open a conversation. The simplicity of opening a dialogue with a neighbour or friend can really help them if they need an ear, a shoulder or a just a reassuring friendly face. Statistics say one in four Australians suffer some form of anxiety. A cuppa and a chat is a great, gentle way to help someone who needs it. And sharing cake certainly helps as well. (And if you’re no Cupcake King or Dessert Diva fear not… we wont tell a soul if you buy something delish from the bakery instead… it’s really all about sharing some time and starting a conversation, and we can all do that.) There are oodles of lovely charities raising money to support those who need it, however Baking Our Blues Away is not about money, there’s no need to shake a tin out there… just a sieve over a mixing bowl. Baking for someone is a beautiful way to show someone you care. So get to it lovelies! Tie on the apron and pre-heat the oven. Find a recipe and someone who needs a smile and bake up a storm! MID winter. When the weather person cheerily pops into your loungeroom and announces that it’ll be -1 overnight and a top of 7 tomorrow, you could easily be forgiven for putting the social life on hold ‘til October. Staying in and getting cosy on the couch in your PJs is super tempting when it’s cold out there… But Saturday nights on the couch watching bad telly is soul destroying. And seriously lacks sequins and fabulousness. Kyneton Community Park is hosting a Mid Winter’s Ball, Saturday, July 19, 8pm at the Kyneton Town Hall. Step back to the 20s for a night of decadence with burlesque, a big band, poker, two-up, dancing, schmoozing and fun. Dress up 20s style. The evening is a fundraiser for the Community Park. BEARDS are everywhere. From dads pushing the swings at the park, to the boardroom, to the dying-because-they’rea-cliché-but-don’t-wanna-be hipsters of the inner north to diva Eurovision winners. Beards are everywhere baby. There are four deeply committed beardy individuals in a hairy-faced band called (awesomely) The Beards. These boys have impressively produced three full length albums (and coordinating facial fur) all about beards. And it’s time to shake the crumbs out and hit the road to promote their fourth: The Beard Album. They have toured the world, convincing men and women everywhere to flaunt their hairy chins and it’s time for us to bask in the glory of their beardiness. YOU know… we just love a good acronym. Mad about them. We might (or might not) still play that car rego plate game where you make up words out of the letters on the plate… (although aren’t the new Victorian plates with the numbers making that tricky huh??) And it is just THE HOLY GRAIL OF ACRONYMAGE if you can make your acronym into an actual word as well. So very wordishly satisfying. So, how thrilled do you think the team behind Music In The Central Highlands were when they realised their name spelled MITCH. Perfect. We are certain there were high fives all round at the committee meeting the night they figured that one out. MITCH is a not for profit organisation solely focused on the promotion of fine music from our neck of the woods. We are blessed to have a wealth of amazing musos in our region, (seriously per capita, we have LOADS of them) from clever school kids to lauded professional performers who have played the world around. Each year MITCH showcases the great musical talent of the Central Highlands in a series of seasonal concerts. The winter program is so jam-packed they have to hold it over two days. Saturday, July 19, and Sunday, July 20, the Winter Concert Series will feature classical and contemporary music; piano, flute, violin, double bass, piano accordion, cello, clarinet and a soprano performance. The MITCH concert series are wonderful and inspirational, and promise to blow your mind just a little bit (actually a lot) with how much talent we have tucked away up here. The Winter Concerts will be held at ‘Hill House’ 290 Persons Road, East Trentham. Numbers to these events are limited so chip chop music lovers, book now (otherwise you’ll suffer from FOMO). Retro
springs eternal
THIS region has a bit of history. A stroll down the main street of any village in the Central Highlands will attest to this. We flaunt something of a gold-rushy vibe, with late 1800s Victorian/early 1900s Federation architecture, with older buildings hinting at proper gold wealth, and pockets of new money with contemporary renovations and gorgeous schmanciness popping up everywhere. However… tucked in amongst ye olde worlde charm in Hepburn Springs is a pristine time capsule oozing funkalicious retro goodness. The Hepburn Springs Chalet is a heartfelt ode to retro. The building houses a motel for guests, and a loungey bar for anyone wanting to get their groove on and lounge around with friends over a few local wines. The feel of The Chalet Bar is 70s plush. If ABBA, Boney M and the Bee Gees walked through the door arm in arm in flared satin onesies whilst feeding each other fondue not an eyebrow would be raised. It is to be noted, The Chalet is worth visiting solely to inspect its original carpet. They just don’t make carpet like this anymore. (Hint: while you’re there, cast an eagle eye over the carpet pattern… see if you can find the Leunig faces… truly... they’re in there.) The Chalet Bar is open Thursday ‘til Sunday 4pm ‘til late. The bar menu is full of delicious local bits, and Thursday night is Yam Yum Power Plant. The kitchen whips up a vegan storm. The vibe on a Thursday night is super fun, with vinyl on the turntable, cocktails, and a vegan feast for all. The front lounge is a great space to chill with friends and the space is large enough for group bookings. The Chalet has hosted weddings, birthdays, girls’ weekends and other large functions, and we reckon it would be a great space to host a book club… or any club meeting that requires couches and wine.
